@Mkm Bullshit 90s were not better. 90s music sucks, inequality was worsening and entertaiment was getting lamer as it ended the decade. Youre obviously a Millennial that didnt experience the 80s. And for your information im not a Boomer.

Who doesn't remember this like it was yesterday? What history showed was that it wasn't two fighters "over the hill."A great night in my life looking back and one that I definitely won't forget.Ray Leonard arguably IMO was the best pound for pound in boxing history. NO ONE could have not fought as long as he did and step in the ring with(at the time)the most feared puncher in boxing history.I had a feeling that Leonard would beat him and after round two I kept telling my friends that I was right.

I didn't know about this buildup back around the time of the actual fight,i wasn't into boxing then like i am now but i still wanted to see this fight. Great to find out that there was such an in-depth look at such a high profile fight. Highlight of this buildup is towards the end where there was a very interesting panel discussion. Having two of my favorite boxing commentators side by side was great,Alex walluw and Gil Clancy. Both of their insights on the fight were great. Gil Clancy was just as good as a commentator as he was a trainer. Very interesting to see him here as he was to become a fill-in commentator for HBO years later.

@Hecabill are u kidding? Leanord fought a smart fight, he made hagler chase him and it worked. Plus they had some great exchanges, especially wen leanord was against the ropes it was a battle. He outsmarted hagler and fought the way he always did, respect to both guys but in reality nobody gave leanord the slightest chnce of winning and he proved every1 wrong.

I always thought Marvin Hagler over trained for the fight and his muscles seems really tight which makes you slow late in the fight. His shoulders were really tight and muscular which makes the arms heavy. Marvin should have fought Leonard in a rematch. I think Marvin should have gone for the knockout right away.

This was a true Superfight. In 1982 they were ranked as the top 2 fighters in boxing and both avoided any losses. Actually I felt at the time both were undefeated. Hagler had 2 draws and 2 losses in which were wrong. He rematched all 4 and knocked them out. Leonard avenged his loss to Duran and made him quit.
Then they mention age. Hagler was 32 and Leonard 30. Both were once in a generation and I felt they were still barely in their primes.

    • @marknorris1381

Hagler definitely lost the first Willie Monroe fight. He never disputed that decision however he did the others, Leonard, Watts. Leonard was close, I thought it was a draw, the Watts fight although I haven't seen it is widely regarded as a robbery decision. Of the 2 draws I've watched the Antuofermo fight when Hagler challenged, he was way short changed, he won at least 10 rounds of the 15 rounds in that fight.

Leonard hearns Duran and Benitez all won titles at different weights However Hagler stayed in his middleweight comfort zone. He never fought saad Muhammad at light heavyweight. Hagler should have beat Leonard inside seven rounds after all middleweight is his home ground his comfort zone. Leonard’s hand speed and superior boxing brain beat haglers brute force slugging. Brain beat brawn. Both great fighters but that’s why Leonard in modern times is the best pound for pound boxer and Hagler is not.

The thing that is fascinating about Sugar is that he knew how to get inside of your head and intimidate without menace or aggressive talk. Duran knew that he won the first fight but realized Sugar took his best fighting his fight. So the second Duran already had doubt. I believe Hagler had in his head that Sugar took punches from Duran and Hearns and of course battered Hearns. Those first few rounds Leonard stuck to his game plan. Hagler seemed confused and although he says he was robbed I also believe that when he tagged Sugar hard and got caught with flurries he lost focus..

  • @Cyber99195

But Hagler was also over the hill. He had 66 hard fights behinde him. I like Hagler, the guy would had to make the hard way, the worker. But a prime Ray Leonard... Man that was something.

      @sheikibaz2399 6 років тому +5

I agree, Katz was on point, noted Hagler's reflexes being slowed and his inactivity too, talked about Sugar Ray wanting this fight and seeing the openings that Mugabi had exposed and saying Ray's style was better to beat Marvin using movement as opposed to other fighters trying to come at Hagler. Katz was often a good analyst of boxing for many years.

I believe Sugar Ray Leonard was about 40 years old when he fought Camacho, he hadn't fought for 6 years, Rays real prime ended in 1984, he fought Camacho in 1997. It's really hard to take your comments seriously. Ray's last great fight was againt Hagler in 1987, and they actualy were both past their primes even then. You aren't making any sence son.

Camacho was over the hill too so it evens out. add to the fact Hector was really a blown up 130 pounder and his accomplishment is that much more remarkable!
Everyone thought Leonard was going pursue Hector and that Hector would run and instead out pops a fighting mad Hector Camacho. it was Hector's last hurrah, his last great performance. The way he hanlded leonard that nite is what boxing is about, reminiscent of the Loy fight in 82.

I was actually thinking of light-heavy when I made that comment. He was happy to take on smaller guys so why not be brave and move up? Michael Spinks called him out a few times and he refused to step up. I know he was a little short but if he was as desperate for recognition as he claimed he should have taken the chance.

  • @1969JohnnyM

(From below) add in Hearns & Leonard fought in jr/light middleweight before going to middleweight but Hagler at middleweight didn't have a super middleweight division to move into, that division didn't really take off until the end of the 1980's.... so he'd have had to jump 2 divisions in one go & as you move up from light fly to heavy the disparity in size, weight, height & reach increases greatly per division as you go up..

He was actually closer to 31 and Hagler's real age was closer to 35. Neil Hodge Yeah , Ray was perhaps the greatest welterweight ever ( along with Sugar Ray Robinson) but he would never have challenged a peak Hagler at middleweight. Leonard knew very well that he was taking the opportunity to catch a Marvin Hagler whose best as a fighter was behind him .

Gage Plake Hagler was old when he fought Ray,even so,Ray didnt beat him,it was a draw at best for Ray.Leonard would NEVER have fought Marvin in 83,84,85,or 86,Hagler would've knocked him out.Ray showed he can stand and fight but against Marvin he ran.You cant win a fight by running.

    • @TheHumbuckerboy
      @TheHumbuckerboy 8 років тому

+MaxTV Marvin was at the end of a much longer and tougher career than Ray. Marvin also was getting old and he hadn't been particularly active over the previous few years ; his fight with Mugabi had been just over one year prior to theLeonard fight. Ray realised that Marvin had slipped from his peak when he watched the Hagler v Mugabi fight and this is the only reason that he chose to challenge Marvin. Both of these guys remain two of my all-time favourites butHagler trumps Leonard as a MW whilst Leonard remains one of the two top welterweights to have ever lived IMO.

Beautiful man and fighter. Hagler was cheated by the Boxing establishment in delaying the arrival of his greatness , rewarding his rival Leonard with a dubious decision but Hagler was rewarded by the Boxing Gods with superhuman power, resilience and skill in the ring and he had such humbleness and humility outside the ring he was so respected. The Leonard decision may be in doubt but his legacy will never be in doubt. My hero, my inspiration in so many ways .RIP the greatest boxer ever not just GOAT of middleweight. I will miss you.

Leonard was built up and promoted right from the beginning of his career as shown by Duran's cut in their 1st bout, in that bout Duran was the more accomplished guy to hardcore fans yet Leonard got the bulk of the cash cos casuals knew him.

Hagler was only 5'9" compared to Leonard's 5'10", way to small for super middleweight and anyway it wasn't a real recognised weight class til the late 80's so 5'9" Hagler would have had to become a light heavyweight. Are you young or new to boxing...

Exactly why would a welterweight going up to fight a middleweight after a 5 year layoff stand and fight? That would be what we call "stupid". You know, like fighting orthodox when your a southpaw for the first 3 rounds and basically giving them away. This was a boxing clinic, not a toughman competition. And ya can't be a top 5 middleweight of all time if you can't knockout an old welterweight, who never fought middleweight before and only had 1 fight in the previous 5 years. Please.

The cruiser-weight division (like supermiddle) was in it's infancy but that didn't stop Michael from challenging a Holmes who would outweigh him by 22lbs on the night. This documentary paints a slightly distorted view of SRL having things easy and Hagler having them hard.
Hagler’s moaning about getting 50 bucks for his first fight when SRL got 46K for his. The difference is Marv, that SRL had proved himself to be the best amateur welterweight in the world in international competition, whereas you were an unknown nobody.
While SRL was learning his trade against the best amateurs in the world and getting paid nothing while doing it - you were facing weaker competition and were at least getting paid something.
Let’s get some perspective here Marvin. In July 1976 SRL fought and beat the amateur champions of Cuba, Russia, Britain and Germany to win the Olympic gold medal. You had been a pro for three years at this point so what level of opposition were you facing?
2 days after SRL was being awarded his gold medal you were facing the “formidable” DC Walker who had a record at the time of 2-11-1. After the same number of pro fights that you’d had here SRL was fighting an unbeaten world champ in Thomas Hearns.
How about your previous fight….Bob Smith 5-4-0 and before that? Actually you did a face a decent fighter in this one - Willie Monroe …and you lost a 10 round unanimous decision.
“Leonard won the welterweight title in his 26th pro fight ….For Hagler it was in his 54th fight”
It neglects to mention that Hagler had his first title shot in his 49th fight but failed to beat a very ordinary slugger in Vito Antuofermo. And that he had lost 2 of the previous 48 fights. And that he won the title off a very poor champion - Alan Minter.
Whereas SRL won his title from Wilfredo Benitez - a double (and future triple) world champion and a future hall of famer who was unbeaten and in his prime.
The fact is that Hagler was nowhere near good enough to win a world title after 25 fights - SRL was.

TheSmithDorian Shut up Meg. You forget to mention that Hagler was one of the best amateurs in the world but he needed the money. As a pro, you couldn't ignore Ray, the gold medalist, whereas a great, unknown, lefty was someone to be avoided. BTW, Hagler trusted Leonard when he confided in him that he was through with boxing and didm't have it anymore. Leonard admits that motivated him to make the fight.
No one is begrudging SRL his success but Hagler's story is one of perseverance and that should be acknowledged.

"Hagler's story is one of perseverance and that should be acknowledged"
It is acknowledged. Hagler is widely regarded (and I agree) as one of the top 3 middleweights of all time.
But it should also be acknowledged that Hagler's opposition in his early career was of much lessor quality than the guys that Leonard fought early in his career. Yes SRL got paid more for his early fights than Hagler but he was fighting way better and more experienced guys than Hagler was.
      Look at the combined records of their first 25 opponents;
      Hagler W 189 L 201 D 19
      Leonard W 608 L 151 D 33
Of Hagler's first 25 opponents only 9 had an overall winning record and 4 out of that 9 had fought less than 10 fights each.
Of Leonard's first 25 opponents, 23 had an overall winning record and all 23 of them had fought more than 10 times..
      There's no comparison.

    • @RobertJBarnes
      @RobertJBarnes 8 років тому

TheSmithDorian I hear ya, but, it's not a fair comparison.
Consider that Hagler did not turn pro as an Olympic Gold Medalist. He cut his teeth as a pro when, if it were possible, it would have been better to stay an amateur longer. If Hagler was on the Olympic team and a gold medal winner, he could justifiably skip a lot of the tomato cans.
GGG flew out of the gate because of his advanced amateur experience. He basically started off as a good pro.
And, the reason SRL was paid more was because of his marketability. No one can begrudge him that. And he looked invincible. Because he made so much money he could pick his fights. Overall, SRL does not have a lot of fights under his belt.
And, when people started to see hoe good Hagler was, they avoided him. Only a fool would avoid SRL - that's where the money is.
I kinda see SRL as a successful boxer/business man.
I do not like how SRL faced Duran the second time knowing that Duran had no chance to be in shape. And, I don't like how he campaigned to fight Hagler after Hagler confided to him that he was done with fighting. You'l notice that both Hagler and Duran, in his second fight, were enticed with bigger paydays than Leonard. That was shrewd on Leonard's part.
Good for business but not necessarily for boxing.

" it would have been better to stay an amateur longer. If Hagler was on the Olympic team and a gold medal winner ...."
Yes it would have been. But that was Hagler's choice.
"And, when people started to see hoe good Hagler was, they avoided him"
Not really. Remember that Hagler was beaten by Bobby Watts and Willie Monroe in his 27th and 29th fights. Had he not lost to those guys he may have got a title shot earlier than he did. Remember also that at the same time that SRL won the 147 lbs title by TKO'ing Benitez; Hagler could only manage a draw in his title shot against a lessor opponent in Antuofermo.
Let's also keep in mind that Hagler got his first title shot at the age of 25 with a record that included 2 defeats. That's hardly being kept on the sidelines for years is it?
The fact is that Hagler was a much better fighter in his later career than he was in his mid career. Whereas SRL was brilliant all the way through his.

TheSmithDorian "Hagler could only manage a draw in his title shot against a lessor opponent in Antuofermo."
      - We both know he was robbed. What is your point here?
The two losses do not counter my point. That's like saying no one who has two loses will be avoided. There was a period of time when Ruddick was ducked but already had a few losses on his record. In fact there are multiple examples of this.
Plus when you fight as frequently as Hagler did early on, likely on a low budget, you can expect an off night. Plus, he stopped both fighters in rematches.
What is your point here: "Yes it would have been. But that was Hagler's choice. " I don't see how that counters anything. What have you inferred from what I wrote?
You're bringing a knife to gunfight with this one:
"Let's also keep in mind that Hagler got his first title shot at the age of 25 with a record that included 2 defeats. That's hardly being kept on the sidelines for years is it?"
Hagler won 20 consecutive fights including vicious poundings. He was 46 -2 with 38 KOs, that's more fights than SRL had in his entire career and it was a better record than Antuofermo. Almost 50 fights with 38KOs and *only two losses.* before he gets a title shot? That's ridiculous.
"The fact is that Hagler was a much better fighter in his later career than he was in his mid career. Whereas SRL was brilliant all the way through his."
The fact is that Hagler was great mid to late in his career when considered chronologically. Hagler finished somewhat diminished, his reflexes were not the same as Leonard noted. But, he was far from shot he controversially lost to one of the worst run 'n hug strategies I have ever seen. Ignoring Leonard's last two fights, which were abysmal, SRL was not brilliant in his third fight with Duran. He was not brilliant all the way through.
And lets not forget Leonard stayed the hell away from Aaron Pryor.

The rematch was offered in 1990...15 million dollars was on the table for Marvin. Leonard retired after his fight with Hagler....in May 87. He returned 6 weeks after Hagler officially retired from boxing to challenge Lalonde (LMAO). Marvin was nearly 36 by then and was almost 38 when Leonard asked about a rematch. Let's stop using Hagler's official age...everyone in boxing knew his real age....Manny Steward...Angelo Dundee...even Leonard himself knew Hagler's real age. They first met in 1973...

Hagler got robbed, running & shoeshining at the end of a round doesn't do it for me and its why most boxers and trainers and lots of fans thought Hagler got robbed. He never did a rematch cos he knew he was lucky not to get ktfo ! Noticable was most non American judges gave it to Hagler as did the referee in the fight. Winning with spurts and a few flashy flurries on Haglers arms and gloves and a Leonard loving US gave the all American boy big boxing earner Ray Leonard the bout.

  • @tlig

....instance). Why not Marvin? What I hate about the hype that surrounds Hagler is how he's managed to make everyone think he was always the victim. Do you know for instance the only reason there never was a rematch between Hagler and Leonard was because Marvin (yes him) refused it? Of course you don't and that's because he has everyone believing Ray refused to face him again.

I dont need to do any research i was an amateur then & followed the pro's as it was on tv a lot more then although it seems to be on the up in Europe at the moment. I remember staying up to watch Duran Leonard 1 and trust me there was no calls for Hagler Spinks, the mismatch in size would have been funny, hagler ended his career at 160lbs, Spinks was a heavy before then, its not a pissin contest i just know i'm right on this one but i'm big enough to admit being wrong but im not here.

He could have moved up instead of whingeing about other fighters from a COUPLE of divisions down not moving up to meet him. He didn't have to and I don't hold it against him but also guys like Hearns and Leonard didn't have to move up to face him either. I still remember how upset he was when the first scheduled fight with Hearns fell through. Hagler was a whiner.

Leonard didnt fight his best oppsition till his last 2 opponsnts. the hit N hold tactics by Camacho was also reminiscent of the Loy fight, where illegal tactics ABOUNDED! what could Leonard do? Nothing! Hector would grab Ray behind the head on one side, then bring it downward onto Hector's onrushing LEFT uppercut inside. fuckin' BEAUTIFUL. and the ref never saw it!
Leonard was a good fighter but didnt have enough fights so he didnt know how to handle guys like Norris N Camacho
