    Julien!!! Thank you so much!!! I am a wine consultant and often get a lot of grief from my management as to how I pronounce different wines. I pronounce them as the country of origin does and they want to know why I don't pronounce them like Americans. My only response to date has been... That isn't the way it is pronounced.. Thank you!!!

    • @YouTubeJulien
      @YouTubeJulien  4 роки тому +6

      Sorry I missed your comment earlier Kacy! Glad it's useful. Sorry to hear you're getting some grief from management. I think it's good you know what you're talking about, and try to educate others too. Of course, you want your customers to understand too, and not sound too snob, but I think if you know what you're talking about deeply, it's fair enough to say it the way it is said in the country of origin, especially if you've been to those countries and heard it said there, right? I personally naturally pick up on local accents when I travel, and my brain spontaneously wants to mimic it, perhaps because I'm a musician and speak 4 languages. You can probably hear left overs from my time in New Zealand in the way I speak English!? tx for stopping by mate. Keep the faith and passion alive 🥂😊🙏

    • @YouTubeJulien
      @YouTubeJulien  Рік тому +1

      Hi Shannen, of course 😊 it's fairly "simple." You pronounce the T to Saint only when the name after starts with a vowel, like St Estephe, St Emilion, St Antoine. It's silent if the name after starts with a consonant, like Saint Bernard, Saint Paul... now if it's a girl, it's Sainte and the T is always pronounced (because of the e after the T that marks the feminine gender). "Simple" like French always is 😅 hope this helps 🙏♥️

      @@UA-camJulien i mean it litrally. In se ome countries like peru, b and v sound b. But even there cava is pronounced cava and not caba. In others like chile, v is REALLYA different from b.

    Pinotage does not belong in this illustrious company.....

    • @YouTubeJulien
      @YouTubeJulien  4 роки тому

      Hi Andrew. Why?

    • @andrewyarosh1809
      @andrewyarosh1809 4 роки тому +1

      Julien Miquel Because it makes dreadful wines that importers keep trying to shove down consumers throats as “just like” the noble grapes you include on your list. Every 5 years or so I taste it on a restaurant list thinking things have to improve, and they never do. Just because South African producers grow massive amounts of this grape, doesn’t mean it is “important.” Smelling like paint and tasting like rusty nails....
      You make room for Pinotage, but have no room for Aglianico, Albariño, Aligoté, Assyrtiko, Carignan, Carménière, Cinsault, Falanghina, Fiano d’Avelinno, Furmint, Grüner, Marisanne, Melon de Bourgogne, Mourvèdre, Negeoamaro, Nero d’Avola, Petit Verdot, Pipoul de Pinet, Sémillon, Tannat, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Trebbiano, Verdicchio.
      Novices need to know how to pronounce these grape varieties ahead of Pinotage. The only reason to know Pinotage is to be able to pass it by at the store and on a list.

      @@andrewyarosh1809 Hi Andrew, I see what you're saying. I've had good tasting experiences with Pinotage, but not all of them, that's true. I tend to think there' no such thing as a bad grape; just bad wines. Pinotage has become quite iconic and synonymous with South Africa when it comes to wine, for the better or the worse I guess. But I thought it was fair to include it here, if only for the pronunciation. This is not a ranking nor an endorsement, but rather important wine words to have in mind.
      Where I live in Languedoc, Carignan was considered a bad grape, while it can make some beautiful wines under certain conditions, old vines, certain terroirs...
      I'm working my way through grapes and types of wines on this channel to try and explain them all, eventually. I agree, many 'obscure' grapes are fantastic in many corner of the world and deserve more spotlights. I guess at not at this point where I can make the trends. Would I actually want to? I guess I like to talk about the best side in things from the wine world, show their bright side when they need it. I often see wines as people. Don't like bringing them down. Although sometimes you have to when they deserve it. Anyways, I guess I'd need to taste more Pinotage to get a broader view. Sounds like you've tasted many more than I have. Cheers A. Good to exchange views :-)

      Julien Miquel Thanks for the lovely reply. Looking forward to more videos, including “how to pronounce” of some of the grapes on my list, since they are also difficult for many novices (I just spent 10 minutes on Sunday at the shop with a customer on “Al-YAH-nee-koh”). South Africa doing so much better with whites these days.
      I also understand your point about Carignanne. It was pretty brambly in the past, but we’ve had a couple of lovely examples in the past year. So maybe there can be progress everywhere.

      @@andrewyarosh1809 Cool man. Yes there are some great Carignan wines, but it's generally old vines on rough terroirs. It needs a lot heat to ripen as well. So different things have to come together well for the best results. I think they use carbonic maceration on it when it's not at its best to only extract the good stuff.
      Absolutely, will make videos on these. It's great to have suggestions. There's so many grape names I never know where to start and what what to do next. I lived in Spain and Italy so I've heard and said these with the local accent. See you soon again here Andrew. Santé!
