  • The nondepolarizing neuromuscular junction blockers like atracurium and rocuronium are curare-derivatives used in anesthesia for paralysis during surgery. These agents act by competitively blocking nicotinic receptors, postsynaptically at the neuromuscular junction. This prevents depolarization and inhibits muscle contraction. Train of Four stimulation will show
progressive reduction of muscle response. Neostigmine is the drug of choice to reverse these agents, and don’t forget the hypotension and respiratory depression are seen as possible side effects.

I have a problem that I have to make known when mivacurium or similar meds might be used on me. I have a genetic mutation that slows the metabolism of this stuff. After wisdom tooth surgery I woke up being "bagged," i.e. mechanical ventilation. A bit concerning. Apparently I have a deficiency of "butyrylcholinesterase."

Respiratory depression is not a “potential side effect of neuromuscular blocking medication‘s. It is a guarantee.

Same reason why any given topic will have multiple books, videos, or other ways to learn. The visual mnemonics that Sketchy decides to use don't always stick for some people. People's brains are diverse like that. So instead of torturing themselves trying to make a particular sketch stick, they benefit from seeking an alternative that organizes the information in a different way using the same medium.
