I found something else to be helpful, too. When I notice I'm having a random thought, I immediately focus on something like noticing a tree or other object that interrupts my random thought. With practice, it calms the mind.
When I'm immersed in thoughts I am not aware that I am; all there is, is the thoughts. As soon as I notice that I am immersed, I no longer am immersed. At least so it seems to me.
So deeper & clear man. there's nothing like identified or unidentified thought there just happening itself and open awareness present there, complete and free from any Bound. So there's just being and other any idia other than silence is like automatic mind shit which is on going.
When I expand to the periphery, the thoughts I had been identified with still maintain a pull, or magnetism, energy that has me feeling compelled to reconnect with it. Like a mother to a crying baby, if you will. (And, yes, these thoughts deal with a challenging situation that doesn’t seem to go away yet.)

Awareness of thoughts is different, thoughts don't arise automatically even though it is possible to think once there is attention on awareness itself. But identified thoughts are those where there's a forgetfulness of being aware.
