- How To Sing On Pitch - How To Sing In Tune - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Pitch is a big subject, and the reasons for lack of good pitch vary from person to person.
While there are similar reasons people struggle with pitch, there are also many differences.
Let me explain:
We must first start at the the beginning, with the building blocks, in order to eliminate the moving targets that inhibit good pitch.
1. Support Is King: Good diaphragmatic abdominal support. This is the engine that drives your car. Without it, especially when ascending a passage, scale, or higher notes in a song, pitch will be directly affected by this one component alone. Make sure you are supporting all your notes throughout your range. This will build consistency and remove this as being a possible obstacle.
2. Relaxation Response: We must understand that since the abdomen is carrying the load (for strength in the sound) we must train the chest, neck, and throat to relax, to let the abdomen do the “heavy lifting.”
3. Vowel Placement: We must also learn correct vowel modifications and build good muscle-memory to hold that vowel placement. In other words we need to understand how it is supposed to feel in the throat for these vowels when we sing. If we don’t, it’s like a car with no steering wheel or a ship with no rudder. We need to confidently “steer” these vowels in the right direction with the greatest of ease in the throat.
4. Over-Enunciation Of Consonants: Because we are training with “Open Throat Technique” (to keep the back of the throat as open as possible and not close down the throat when we sing with something called “contiguous phrase singing.” De-emphasizing the consonants enables us to not close down the throat during consonants, and not have to “re-set” up the vowels, so we aren’t constantly having to try to re-open the vocal tract to find that space in the throat again.
5. Air Compression: When we go up and down in a song, there are different amounts of air compression that builds up in the head. The higher we go, the more this compression occurs. The effect of this is much like the doppler effect of a train or police siren passing by at a high speed. Though the “true” sound of the train doesn’t change, there is a perceived change in the “pitch” of that train or siren. We must learn to compensate for this. Try an experiment and you will see what I mean. Get yourself a pair of “closed back” headphones (so there is no air/ audio leak from the outside). Put on some music where music is playing in the room and have the same music playing in your headphones. You will notice that after listening for about 30 seconds, when you remove the headphones, the “pitch” will drop. It doesn’t actually drop, it’s just your perception of this pitch will sound “flat” or underneath the pitch you heard in your headphones compared to the room. Now let’s relate this to voice. When we ascend a scale or passage, this same kind of “doppler” effect happens in the head. We train ourselves to be able to compensate for this change.
6. Ear Training Exercises: To “sharpen” one’s ear to good pitch, there are some excellent exercises that can be done to conquer pitch issues with confidence. It takes time, consistency, and patience. I cover these concepts in my singing course called “How To Sing Better Than Anyone Else.”
Great Singing To You!

Imagine loving to sing but you are just so tone-deaf and one day you give birth to a child who sings anything naturally in perfect pitch with no effort whatsoever, any note is recreated exactly and they can improvise and sound good all the time lol. Music has always been a thing in my home. I'm blessed. My kid loves singing and I'm watching your videos to help her get better and have more discipline, she expressed her desire to be a singer. Thank you for all the tips and lessons, much appreciated.
Rock on! 😀
God bless you, 🙏👍
Best slinky impression ever.
I appreciate that, Jason. That took me quite some time to get perfected.
There’s definitely a difference between what I hear inside my head versus outside my head.
😊
Omg YES! Play a random note on the piano and I can reasonably quickly identify what note it is (so I know I have good sense of pitch), but when I sing I'm pitchier than I realize (and it's usually a hair flat).
There's a trick for that I've seen idk if it works but you can try it
Put your hands or a book or paper or something in front of your ears. Dont wrap it around your ears just put it right in front of them with, if you use your hand, your palm facing the front
@@daisyisnotreal I know it too, it works! Can even put fingers in front of ears and press a little, you'll see the difference... If not, keep singing straight and take fingers away slowly and again bring 'em back and press slowly you'll definitely see the difference, and yeah that's how people hear you, not like recording voice...
"If you're out there and you feel like you suck"...... slowly raises hand
ahaha ive sang PERFECT offpitch for 60 years now..why change now
Savage.🤣❤️
Man, that "coming in from behind the note" using the soft palate is such valuable advice. Thanks!
It works really well, Mark!
This is true. When in the studio and I'm tracking a singer who is consistently flat, I mute the bass guitar or any low end instrument then he can sing into pitch. Like Ken said dark vocals usually will be flat. Thanks for the "Ping is King!" great advice.
I haven't watched yet, but recording yourself singing actually does wonders. I used to be very in tune with my voice because I used to record covers. But for like 2 years I just sang to sing, after recording myself again I noticed I was singing with not enough chest voice. Within 10 minutes of fixing it (since I've already learned previously) I sounded 10x better and was more confident in my voice.
I love that you actually go through the lesson rather than just giving a snippet with the invitation to purchase the course
I'm glad that you noticed that I am trying to give away as much information as I can. I have spent my life learning these things.
I hope you find this tutorial interesting and helpful! Let me know what vocal topics you want to see more tutorials on, and also what vocal demonstrations would really get you pumped-up!
Please LIKE and COMMENT! :-)
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy thanks a lot I'm now better singer thanks I've been struggling with my pitch sometimes I got choked in the middle of a song .but now I can control my voice without any problems Its gradually but I know with your coaching I'll definitely reach there
Good to hear that you are making progress, florence!
I'm not sure what My colo or tone would be in, if I sing low I sound dark, but if I sing in a tone I think in between like Baritone, I think, not sure, no one ever told Me exactly what My range is exactly, but I think some where around that erea. i know one time I covered the Song Serenity, by the band Godsmack, being as a request, but I'm not sure exactly what range Sully Erna sings in, but that song I like a lot, and wish I could sing it better.
Record yourself and listen to it played back. Is it bright? If not, why not?
I did that ...my voice is heavy dark flat .....so lah scale holds the magic with proper practice with patience...right?
Oh my goodness .. you can even mimic the sound a slinky makes! So impressed with your vocal dexterity and mastery! Ken Tamplin is the absolutely the best teacher here in the youtube and his course is awesome!
Ha, ha! I had to simulate that for those who might barely remember that from their childhood! :-)
I cannot thank you enough for your kindness and generosity in sharing your plethora of knowledge in your videos and for all you have given and dedicated to enhancing art through music.
Best advice! Once I understood that you can basically turn most O's, E's and U's in A's, it not only sounds better, you will also live to sing another day.
Rock on, Timothy!
My teacher always tells me to sing As with mouth opened for O
I never knew how much I actually struggled with pitch until I watched this video. My technique was completely wrong. I was always reaching for the notes instead of like Ken said, dropping down on them from behind. Thanks Ken!
This guy knows his stuff, He is giving so much information out, it amazes me! I know because my mother studied opera many years ago and I took singing lessons when I was younger in New York City. Even though I was one of the LIGHTS ON BROADWAY, that didnt make it big, NEVER SAY NEVER!!!!!
It is very inspirational to see such a great person with such great talent generously giving out great information for free, I would pay any amount of money to get private lessons from Ken Tamplin because I can see he is really unique and can get you started on a singing career fast and easy , Of course, you need discipline and study. I wish I would have known him years ago, when I was trying to break into show business,I I am praising this man because I know how difficult it can be when you want to become a vocalist to get the right teachers that are sincere and really care, and this man is giving out all this basic knowledge to the public and I really appreciate that in this day and age when people are not like that, He is sharing his great success!!! Music was a big thing in my home too , my family was from Naples , Italy, where some of the most beautiful songs in the world are written!!!
Someone help: when I sing WITH someone or WITH the radio, I'm ALWAYS on pitch. I can sing perfectly and hot every note. BUT when I try to sing ON MY OWN, I'm a half step flat constantly. Just a half step but that half step key is the consistent. Why is this? (When I play with my guitar, it's 50/50)
Hey Ken! I've just watched 6 of your UA-cam videos in a row and I must say that aside from your engaging charisma, you are very articulate in your demonstrations, your repertoire and in your instruction delivery.
I am 37 yr old (redheaded.. yes that's important) woman from Sydney, Australia.
I've been singing in choirs, school bands and garage bands as a teen and now as an adult I'm re-entering my love for singing again. The first time I knew I needed to sing was when I came to live in Australia from Ireland at the age of 7 and still had my Irish accent. I was sitting with a group of (paid) Irish musos at a pub and they started playing Dublin's Fair City. Without thinking I just started singing and before I knew it the instruments stopped and the entire pub was listening (which was a lot of people back then as it was the 80s on a Sunday afternoon jamming session). I was so lost in the moment that I hadn't noticed until I stopped. The whole place thundered in applause and I'll never forget how that felt. Then I quickly ran away with embarassment. Lol
Now I'm a woman and a mother of 5 boys. I've only now discovered that all these years I've actually had a very big fear of a Capella singing.. maybe since that first time I never thought I could live up to that same level again. I will only sing to backing tracks, instruments and I'm definitely more comfortable with a mic... it's like I magically turn on my voice and without a mic it's invisible (if you get that analogy).
It's in recognising this fear that I've realised I actually have a lack of confidence in my voice underneath my "performer's confidence".
I feel like I'm ripping away all the layers and exposing my vulnerabilities as a singer to become the best at what I love and starting right at the beginning.
Your videos are definitely helping me progress in a way I hadn't allowed myself before.
Thankyou. Xo
Thank you for your thoughtful comments, Amelia. I'm glad you're getting back into it and that my videos are helpful to you.
The point about brightness is a huge revelation. I was hesitant of it because I wanted to sound darker, but the technically correct way to get that darkness is from that bright coordination, as Ken points out. Nowhere in fact is ping more important than in opera, as it is what carries the voice unamplified across an entire stadium.
You are an amazing teacher Ken. Great at explaining and articulating. A lot of my questions are being answered. Thank you for your videos they are super helpful !!
I'm glad the videos are helping you, Maureen!
Ken, you have addressed this - my main issue - better than anyone else on the internet. You are and incredible teacher and great artist! Thank you!
Wow, thanks!
between ken tamplin and steve stine my dreams of making music have become more realistic. these guys give me soo much inspiration. keep up the good work. when i make it to the big time, i'll be sure to credit these two men as my mentors.
Steve has a great approach to making guitar more fun than work. He has an awesome channel. 😊
Can we just talk about how amazing that slinky impression was though? Lol
Sure. I challenge you to a slinky impersonation duel!
Always helpful and informative! Thanks Ken Tamplin ;)
Thanks for the free tips Ken..you've helped immensely !!
This video helped me immensely. Great teaching!
Not kidding these videos helped me find my voice! So thankful! You’re awesome Ken!!!
You rock!
I Wish I lived in your area to have you as my singing guru.... you’re so passionate about what you do and really want the singers you are teaching to be the best.
My course comes to you! kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
Fantastic video as always Ken. Do you think inverting the scale while you are excersing would also help, what I mean is instead of going 1-2-3-2-1; go 3-2-1-2-3? Once again great work!
I used to be able to sing
Then puberty hit
Now i sound like a dying cow
Can you help me? Please?
The Doctor Trust me it's very hard to sing in your teens, especially older teens. When you become an adult, you will develop a more stable, better sounding tone.
The Doctor- Have you checked out my course? store.kentamplinvocalacademy.com/rock-your-voice-sale/
The Doctor if u think u sound like a dying cow, i gt told i sound like a dead cow ressurecting
U were never able to sing
PreheatedCandy I tried singing after puberty so I don't actually know how it feels 😆
Mr Tamplin I so much love your channel!!! I m your BIGGEST FAN!!! thank you so much for making time to share your knowledge! you re the BEST as well as your students are!!! because of someone like you who is very positive we start to believe that it doesn't matter how badly we sing at the beginning it s all about believing in yourself, practicing and loving music.
DIDNT even watch the vid yet, but I already know there’s going to be a lot of “LaAAaaAAhHhhH”
Rock on!
😂😂😂
Amazing teacher! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this tip and specially showing "false" and "right" ...that helped me a lot :)
Great, valuable advice..! Ken Tamplin is the best..!
Amazing teaching !!
These are great tips, what a fantastic teacher.
Glad you like them!
Your way explaining things are explicit! In order to know something we cant see like pitch, we have to create our own visualization of itself so that we could reach the feeling of using it. Thank you so much Mr Ken!
Love from Indonesia🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
Glad it was helpful!
Great Video, thank you Ken!🎶
Ken you Rock, thanks I needed some motivation.
This was so helpful love how expressive you are
Thank you!
HNY Ken. Thank you 😊❤️ for all your videos. Happy New Year 🎉 to you.
Thank you too! Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾🎈🧨
Oh my Gosh, I am pumped just looked you up Ken and came across Amazing Grace on ITunes, which I purchased, I never ever heard anyone sing the amazing song like you did, you blew it out of the park like all your other songs you do. I am buying the class in the next couple of days, your amazing!
Thanks for the kind words, Roxy! That's awesome that you're getting the course! You'll like what happens to your voice!
You have helped me so much thank you Ken!!!!!!
I just want to take a moment to appreciate the slinky impression. That slinky impression was on point!
Thank you so much Ken!
My pleasure!
Ken thank you for all your posts. I am older and just starting to learn and find all your videos so helpful. You can teach an old dog new tricks. And the proof is in the singing.
George Pedone- Awesome! I'd love to hear your progress!
That was a great lesson! Thank-You Ken!
You're welcome, The Photographer!
Great! The slinky analogy made SO much sense....totally worked!!! You...Rock Sir!
Theron Hayden Happy to hear that!
Great advice, thanks--I also got my guitar in tune.
Very Helpful! Glad I found this video!
I'm glad you did, too!
You are an awesome teacher. Thank you!
Thanks so much!
Great mental advice about coming in from behind the note!. Scooping up to the note has been a beotch of bad habit for me to break. I'm slowly purging this problem from my singing. Ken...another one of your phrases that rings in my head everyday is "a well placed note". You mentioned this during your vibrato videos but I've adopted that mindset to make me more aware of nailing the pitch and avoiding the "scoop". During many of the exercises in your course I will end a scale with a "well placed note" and relax into the light vibrato. Ive got some bad habits to chase down. Thanks for all of your help!
Ken i love your vids! Thanks so much for showing us the science and the proof in your vids
Glad you like them!
I love your work, every video I watch of yours it gets me in the mood to sing, and it's a great mood to be in, I can't wait to start your course. In saying that, I'd love to hear you do a Cold Chisel song, being a Aussie myself and I also happen to know Jimmy Barnes. Thank you Ken 😀
Thanks, TheOzflyer, for the comments and for the request!
Did you start the course? if so how's it going. im Aussie too.
Great video! Thanks so much, Ken!
😊
Great Mr. Ken Tamplin! Thank you so much for helpful video. You are now like always very clear in everything you explain. I am watching your videos always with the great pleasure. In the past alway by watching you i done so: what i not understood i simply imitate you and with the time i understand your lessons very good. My voice became much better texture too because i got some of your temperament too just by watching and trying what you do by showing how.! Thank you so much!!! Your put your name on Vocal coach and Singer on the first place by me!
Roses1401, I'm glad you're learning by watching and listening! Great t o hear from you!
Great tip. I just tried it out with you and worked really well. Thanks🙂
You're welcome!
Helpful Video SirTamplin, Greetings from Phillipines~
Man. You are a great teacher.

Wow Ken….such a genius….make it look so simple…..it’s frying my brain….but I love it…not giving up…love ya…..b watching….🔥🔥
Those slinky imitation sounds were on point! Nice. Very helpful
Thanks for the evaluation!
I know you're very busy..it's an honor that you replied. Have been up studying the voice all night..3 months ago, I did not believe singing could ever become something I was able to do. But I love a challenge so I went for it. Long story short, I've realized it's very much an obtainable dream if it is worked for. You've been a great influence within my learning of the art. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all!
1:51 Count Dracula laughing haha
😀
Ken thanks for the video.
Good Job Ken!
Love from Bangladesh!
Thank you. I love your videos so much! Music has always been a very important part of my life. I played the trumpet for 15 years, and now I love to sing. I'm an avid shower singer :-) I'm always looking for ways to improve; I live in a high rise, and I doubt my neighbors appreciate my current capabilities :-) I love your voice!!
You're welcome, lovekai88! Thanks for the compliments!
Is the best teacher 👍👍👍)
Glad you think so!
Great advice and excellent slinky sounds.
Thank you kindly!
You're amazing! Perfect teacher!!!
Thank you, Laeh!
Thank you very much for the quality information :-)
Really good video!
i really understand you better when i smoke. Very helpful vids.
Good one Ken! Very good point about the coloration along with pitch. I sing and play sax and sax players are always fiddling with their mouthpieces and adjusting for coloration. A high baffle mouthpiece is a brighter (less colored) sound. But you are quite right ... if you are out of tune or off pitch then you are out of tune more brightly. Excellent points you make... and the sax is the instrument that is closest to the human voice so many of your techniques cross over into the sax world nicely.
Yes, Joseph! There are so many things about tone and intonation that are common to the saxophone and to the human voice! The breath support is another such area of similarities. It's nice to hear from you. Thanks for commenting! 😊
God Bless Ken Tamplin for his brilliant wisdom sharing!!!!!!!
Thanks, LadyCroMag!
Love the faces 😍 I can watch you because your so upbeat! Like the instruction!! Thanks
Glad you like them!
Really Helpful ❤️
Loving your videos. Reminds me of when I trained with Don Lawrence back in the '90's :) No regrets!
Pam Blizzard- Glad you enjoy the videos!
I see what you mean. A lot of songs I have learned to sing by using the original singer's vocal colorings as my guide, so it's sometimes hard to tell if my pitch is off, and if so, how much. I think my learning the guitar should help that a lot!
That slinky idea worked instantly.
When you were doing scales just then. I tried it- it worked then I felt my self pushing up on the note and sounded bad then I reimagined coming down on the note again and boom! It was like magic.
Glad it worked for you, Harrison!
Great lesson !
Glad you liked it!
I record a rhythm track on guitar in a multi-track session in Adobe Audition then record an overlay of singing so I can focus on the singing over playing. Helps some but Ken is helping the most in his videos.
Glad to hear my videos have been helpful to you, evilcoyboy!
Definitely some very good tips
Glad it was helpful, Marty!
Thanks for these great lessons! Great exercises! I'm going to thumbs up and subscribe to support your channel! And I look forward to checking out your other lessons! Thank you so much for sharing!
Awesome! Thank you!
Wow, this guy is brilliant! I have awful pitch so it’s a work in progress…lots of work!

Great info!!
Thank you, mike!
Hi Ken. I met you like one year ago or so. I'm spanish, spanish is my mother tongue... but fortunately I've been speaking english since I was a kid, so I found no trouble to understand everything you say. I like your personality, you're very charming and you always go straight to the point, making my vocal lessons more comfortable and useful. Well, I guess that's what I wanted to say. Thank you for being there ;)
You're too kind, Miguel! I appreciate that! Rock on!
Since I started watching your videos, I have stopped watching anything or anyone else. I get so much out of them. Seriously thinking of getting your course. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom. You are so generous and helpful.
Happy to help, sheeba!
Great coach :)
You're such a great teacher. I wish I could come to you for lessons
Thanks, K K!
This is an excellent tutorial.
Thanks, Michael!
lovely..started using your lessons now...am waiting for betterment
musicrockersmetal99- Awesome! Keep me updated!!
My voice started to get brighter thank ken
Yes That's how I started to sing, recording my self, and playback. Also I would sing along to my favorite artist, still do. Now I can access to my high pitch vocals anytime and blend it in to any other voice pitch. I'm amazed how my vocal cords work, I can go up and down to any pitch no problem on demand, and blend it in any pitch smoothly. It's like I'm playing violin on my vocal cords
Awesome, Russ! The voice IS an instrument!
@@kentamplin yes I agree %100
Thank u sir.
You're welcome, Tharaka 08!
Love the positive psychology of dropping down 🤩
