Imagine loving to sing but you are just so tone-deaf and one day you give birth to a child who sings anything naturally in perfect pitch with no effort whatsoever, any note is recreated exactly and they can improvise and sound good all the time lol. Music has always been a thing in my home. I'm blessed. My kid loves singing and I'm watching your videos to help her get better and have more discipline, she expressed her desire to be a singer. Thank you for all the tips and lessons, much appreciated.
This is true. When in the studio and I'm tracking a singer who is consistently flat, I mute the bass guitar or any low end instrument then he can sing into pitch. Like Ken said dark vocals usually will be flat. Thanks for the "Ping is King!" great advice.
I haven't watched yet, but recording yourself singing actually does wonders. I used to be very in tune with my voice because I used to record covers. But for like 2 years I just sang to sing, after recording myself again I noticed I was singing with not enough chest voice. Within 10 minutes of fixing it (since I've already learned previously) I sounded 10x better and was more confident in my voice.
Omg YES! Play a random note on the piano and I can reasonably quickly identify what note it is (so I know I have good sense of pitch), but when I sing I'm pitchier than I realize (and it's usually a hair flat).
There's a trick for that I've seen idk if it works but you can try it Put your hands or a book or paper or something in front of your ears. Dont wrap it around your ears just put it right in front of them with, if you use your hand, your palm facing the front
@@daisyisnotreal I know it too, it works! Can even put fingers in front of ears and press a little, you'll see the difference... If not, keep singing straight and take fingers away slowly and again bring 'em back and press slowly you'll definitely see the difference, and yeah that's how people hear you, not like recording voice...
I never knew how much I actually struggled with pitch until I watched this video. My technique was completely wrong. I was always reaching for the notes instead of like Ken said, dropping down on them from behind. Thanks Ken!
This guy knows his stuff, He is giving so much information out, it amazes me! I know because my mother studied opera many years ago and I took singing lessons when I was younger in New York City. Even though I was one of the LIGHTS ON BROADWAY, that didnt make it big, NEVER SAY NEVER!!!!! It is very inspirational to see such a great person with such great talent generously giving out great information for free, I would pay any amount of money to get private lessons from Ken Tamplin because I can see he is really unique and can get you started on a singing career fast and easy , Of course, you need discipline and study. I wish I would have known him years ago, when I was trying to break into show business,I I am praising this man because I know how difficult it can be when you want to become a vocalist to get the right teachers that are sincere and really care, and this man is giving out all this basic knowledge to the public and I really appreciate that in this day and age when people are not like that, He is sharing his great success!!! Music was a big thing in my home too , my family was from Naples , Italy, where some of the most beautiful songs in the world are written!!!
I hope you find this tutorial interesting and helpful! Let me know what vocal topics you want to see more tutorials on, and also what vocal demonstrations would really get you pumped-up! Please LIKE and COMMENT! :-)
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy thanks a lot I'm now better singer thanks I've been struggling with my pitch sometimes I got choked in the middle of a song .but now I can control my voice without any problems Its gradually but I know with your coaching I'll definitely reach there
I'm not sure what My colo or tone would be in, if I sing low I sound dark, but if I sing in a tone I think in between like Baritone, I think, not sure, no one ever told Me exactly what My range is exactly, but I think some where around that erea. i know one time I covered the Song Serenity, by the band Godsmack, being as a request, but I'm not sure exactly what range Sully Erna sings in, but that song I like a lot, and wish I could sing it better.
Oh my goodness .. you can even mimic the sound a slinky makes! So impressed with your vocal dexterity and mastery! Ken Tamplin is the absolutely the best teacher here in the youtube and his course is awesome!
Best advice! Once I understood that you can basically turn most O's, E's and U's in A's, it not only sounds better, you will also live to sing another day.
I cannot thank you enough for your kindness and generosity in sharing your plethora of knowledge in your videos and for all you have given and dedicated to enhancing art through music.
between ken tamplin and steve stine my dreams of making music have become more realistic. these guys give me soo much inspiration. keep up the good work. when i make it to the big time, i'll be sure to credit these two men as my mentors.
The point about brightness is a huge revelation. I was hesitant of it because I wanted to sound darker, but the technically correct way to get that darkness is from that bright coordination, as Ken points out. Nowhere in fact is ping more important than in opera, as it is what carries the voice unamplified across an entire stadium.
Your way explaining things are explicit! In order to know something we cant see like pitch, we have to create our own visualization of itself so that we could reach the feeling of using it. Thank you so much Mr Ken! Love from Indonesia🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
Hey Ken! I've just watched 6 of your UA-cam videos in a row and I must say that aside from your engaging charisma, you are very articulate in your demonstrations, your repertoire and in your instruction delivery. I am 37 yr old (redheaded.. yes that's important) woman from Sydney, Australia. I've been singing in choirs, school bands and garage bands as a teen and now as an adult I'm re-entering my love for singing again. The first time I knew I needed to sing was when I came to live in Australia from Ireland at the age of 7 and still had my Irish accent. I was sitting with a group of (paid) Irish musos at a pub and they started playing Dublin's Fair City. Without thinking I just started singing and before I knew it the instruments stopped and the entire pub was listening (which was a lot of people back then as it was the 80s on a Sunday afternoon jamming session). I was so lost in the moment that I hadn't noticed until I stopped. The whole place thundered in applause and I'll never forget how that felt. Then I quickly ran away with embarassment. Lol Now I'm a woman and a mother of 5 boys. I've only now discovered that all these years I've actually had a very big fear of a Capella singing.. maybe since that first time I never thought I could live up to that same level again. I will only sing to backing tracks, instruments and I'm definitely more comfortable with a mic... it's like I magically turn on my voice and without a mic it's invisible (if you get that analogy). It's in recognising this fear that I've realised I actually have a lack of confidence in my voice underneath my "performer's confidence". I feel like I'm ripping away all the layers and exposing my vulnerabilities as a singer to become the best at what I love and starting right at the beginning. Your videos are definitely helping me progress in a way I hadn't allowed myself before. Thankyou. Xo
That slinky idea worked instantly. When you were doing scales just then. I tried it- it worked then I felt my self pushing up on the note and sounded bad then I reimagined coming down on the note again and boom! It was like magic.
I Wish I lived in your area to have you as my singing guru.... you’re so passionate about what you do and really want the singers you are teaching to be the best.
I record a rhythm track on guitar in a multi-track session in Adobe Audition then record an overlay of singing so I can focus on the singing over playing. Helps some but Ken is helping the most in his videos.
Yes That's how I started to sing, recording my self, and playback. Also I would sing along to my favorite artist, still do. Now I can access to my high pitch vocals anytime and blend it in to any other voice pitch. I'm amazed how my vocal cords work, I can go up and down to any pitch no problem on demand, and blend it in any pitch smoothly. It's like I'm playing violin on my vocal cords
Someone help: when I sing WITH someone or WITH the radio, I'm ALWAYS on pitch. I can sing perfectly and hot every note. BUT when I try to sing ON MY OWN, I'm a half step flat constantly. Just a half step but that half step key is the consistent. Why is this? (When I play with my guitar, it's 50/50)
Hi Ken. I met you like one year ago or so. I'm spanish, spanish is my mother tongue... but fortunately I've been speaking english since I was a kid, so I found no trouble to understand everything you say. I like your personality, you're very charming and you always go straight to the point, making my vocal lessons more comfortable and useful. Well, I guess that's what I wanted to say. Thank you for being there ;)
Great mental advice about coming in from behind the note!. Scooping up to the note has been a beotch of bad habit for me to break. I'm slowly purging this problem from my singing. Ken...another one of your phrases that rings in my head everyday is "a well placed note". You mentioned this during your vibrato videos but I've adopted that mindset to make me more aware of nailing the pitch and avoiding the "scoop". During many of the exercises in your course I will end a scale with a "well placed note" and relax into the light vibrato. Ive got some bad habits to chase down. Thanks for all of your help!
I see what you mean. A lot of songs I have learned to sing by using the original singer's vocal colorings as my guide, so it's sometimes hard to tell if my pitch is off, and if so, how much. I think my learning the guitar should help that a lot!
I just tried something that works! I've been trying to sing a kareoke song have you ever seen the rain. The pitch is way off which I can tell by recording myself.. But when I sing it without the words and just say, na, na, na, na, i notice a big improvement! I'm going to sign up for your beginner class in few days when I get my stimulus check. I never thought it possible I could sing anything, but now I believe it's within reach!
Hello, i just found this video. It's my first. My friends says i can't sing even if my life would depended on it but my girlfriend, who actually is a trained singer who sang in a choire who sang for the Swedish King says i've got good range, good potential but no technique. After reading the long thing you wrote about "air compression that builds up in the head" i totally believe that i can learn how to control my voice. I see a few titles i recognize in your videos, i hope i'll learn something from it. And my lady can help me too, i hope! I'll try this out first thing in the morning!
The Doctor Trust me it's very hard to sing in your teens, especially older teens. When you become an adult, you will develop a more stable, better sounding tone.
Every vocalist has that one artist they are prone to because their pitch may be similar. Mine was Brad Delp. As we age,we all develop swelling and issues in throat from pushing ourselves in our youth not taking care of vocal health,so I noticed a trick he moved on to retain his open throat technique that, even Ken says is so crucial.(I am guessing it was his reason?) Brad set his mic stand up high,so his throat was naturally open facing upward to the mic, then he must of found it easier to insentuate his intricate changes with nothing obstructing. At first I wondered if was due to his band mates being all 6ft 5,like Tom S only they never ended up near his mic so it must of been to retain opened throat.. I tried it and it sure works. Did you ever hear of such a thing Ken?
I tried learning a song without ever hearing it. When I finally listened to the original, I found that it was completely contrary. My son in law sand he liked my version just as much as the original. Made me happy l. "With or without you" was the song by U2.. not really a u2 fan but I like this song.
Since I started watching your videos, I have stopped watching anything or anyone else. I get so much out of them. Seriously thinking of getting your course. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom. You are so generous and helpful.
I have recorded myself singing before. I was completely turned off from singing. I'm not even flat or sharp, Im just monotone all over. I thought I was changing my notes, hitting some highs and lows, but no. My voice practically never changed. Im watching your videos to encourage myself to try again.
You have to start somewhere. Then one step at a time. Hearing a recording of your voice can be a little bizarre, even just a recording of your speaking voice, let along your singing voice. We just don't hear ourselves like others do, so it's a little shocking. Do these exercises and listen carefully as you do them. If you can get the notes right, getting a better tone is much easier.
You are an amazing teacher Ken. Great at explaining and articulating. A lot of my questions are being answered. Thank you for your videos they are super helpful !!
Good one Ken! Very good point about the coloration along with pitch. I sing and play sax and sax players are always fiddling with their mouthpieces and adjusting for coloration. A high baffle mouthpiece is a brighter (less colored) sound. But you are quite right ... if you are out of tune or off pitch then you are out of tune more brightly. Excellent points you make... and the sax is the instrument that is closest to the human voice so many of your techniques cross over into the sax world nicely.
Yes, Joseph! There are so many things about tone and intonation that are common to the saxophone and to the human voice! The breath support is another such area of similarities. It's nice to hear from you. Thanks for commenting! 😊
Oh my Gosh, I am pumped just looked you up Ken and came across Amazing Grace on ITunes, which I purchased, I never ever heard anyone sing the amazing song like you did, you blew it out of the park like all your other songs you do. I am buying the class in the next couple of days, your amazing!
Ken thank you for all your posts. I am older and just starting to learn and find all your videos so helpful. You can teach an old dog new tricks. And the proof is in the singing.
For the visual learners, using a program life adobe audition allows you to see the pitch of your recorded voice. So for listening playback you can SEE how well you're on target. I know this helped me a lot.
The most hardest thing to sing on pitch for me is to reach high notes I want to reach with head voice, but I have to sustain in a better way my head voice which is too nasal sometimes and weak about sustaining , and try to take a better passagio between chest voice and head voice. But I have to tell you, I recorded almost 85 songs in a year, and when you rest your voice, rest your body and your mind, and doing the right warm up exercices, you reach any goals.
Totally love your videos! Vocals are practically impossible to teach realative to any other instrument. Atleast with guitar you can say play fret 5 on the high e string or etc. Anyway, much respect to you and thanks for the lessons 😆
Fantastic video as always Ken. Do you think inverting the scale while you are excersing would also help, what I mean is instead of going 1-2-3-2-1; go 3-2-1-2-3? Once again great work!
Thank you. I love your videos so much! Music has always been a very important part of my life. I played the trumpet for 15 years, and now I love to sing. I'm an avid shower singer :-) I'm always looking for ways to improve; I live in a high rise, and I doubt my neighbors appreciate my current capabilities :-) I love your voice!!
Great Mr. Ken Tamplin! Thank you so much for helpful video. You are now like always very clear in everything you explain. I am watching your videos always with the great pleasure. In the past alway by watching you i done so: what i not understood i simply imitate you and with the time i understand your lessons very good. My voice became much better texture too because i got some of your temperament too just by watching and trying what you do by showing how.! Thank you so much!!! Your put your name on Vocal coach and Singer on the first place by me!
I know you're very busy..it's an honor that you replied. Have been up studying the voice all night..3 months ago, I did not believe singing could ever become something I was able to do. But I love a challenge so I went for it. Long story short, I've realized it's very much an obtainable dream if it is worked for. You've been a great influence within my learning of the art. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all!
I love your work, every video I watch of yours it gets me in the mood to sing, and it's a great mood to be in, I can't wait to start your course. In saying that, I'd love to hear you do a Cold Chisel song, being a Aussie myself and I also happen to know Jimmy Barnes. Thank you Ken 😀
Thank you Ken!! I found my problem. It's the "colored' or "darkened" temporal sound you talk about that I have an issue with. I record myself often to listen for pitch because when I'm singing with guitar accompaniment, I think I am right on pitch with every cord - until I go back and listen. I'm slightly off or 'muddled so to speak. I tried your advice and it is helping a lot!I also notice a difference when I use a mic hooked up to a PA system and hearing yourself through speakers. I also need to work on singing without my guitar. Knowing what chords are coming helps with being able to sing on pitch. Those are other aspects in the learning process I am tackling. I'll be looking for some of your videos on these. Thank You!
Yes, q, you now see what I was talking about. The darker, more covered sound is very hard to discern pitch. A brighter sound is more efficient, and also much clearer to detect correct pitch. The bright sound just makes sense. Better pitch, better tone, more resonance.
As a singer of thirty five years having sung with top notch muso's I do not scoop up or enter from the back, I imagine in on an elevator I go up to the floor number,(the note) the door opens, and bang I'm right on that floor,I sing the note perfect because I'm om the right floor. This I visualise as a fluid instant and smooth motion.
Have you ever gotten out of an elevator and started walking when you realized you weren't on the right floor? Ha! I have. But yeah. I hear what you're saying. That's totally cool, Gra!
Yeah I started recording myself both vocal and guitar and it helps tremendously because you hear yoursrlf and hear what people listening to you hear. It really helps because when you sing you know how its gonna sound to them.
Pause at 3:54 and try not to laugh. I enjoyed the video, thanks so much for these uploads. I'm 28, am gifted with music instruments, but my voice is so raspy and stubborn. I need serious help learning how to sing.
Dear sir, your hair and your facial features remind me of Phoebe from Friends. I don't mean any disrespect. I love that character. You are a real professional, a life-savor for guys who can't sing like myself or look to improve their singing. Thank you so much.
Thank you - not the first time I've looked at your tuitional vids, the consensus among peers is that my problem is confidence. I think that is driven by finding the right key for my limited range (which shocks me cos as a kid I had a vast range). So I muck about changing key again and again, singing in my head, boots, shed.... Anyway once again, what you say about pallet and timbre and confidence seem to nail the where and why of my mess. Hah, record myself. OK, I will because I must. But here's a thing - my studio work I'm 99% happy with. The live gigs - oh dear lawd put me out of your misery. Next step, psychology self help vid:) Thank you, will look in again

I appreciate that, Jason. That took me quite some time to get perfected.
I love that you actually go through the lesson rather than just giving a snippet with the invitation to purchase the course
I'm glad that you noticed that I am trying to give away as much information as I can. I have spent my life learning these things.

The Doctor if u think u sound like a dying cow, i gt told i sound like a dead cow ressurecting
U were never able to sing
PreheatedCandy I tried singing after puberty so I don't actually know how it feels 😆
Every vocalist has that one artist they are prone to because their pitch may be similar.
Mine was Brad Delp.
As we age,we all develop swelling and issues in throat from pushing ourselves in our youth not taking care of vocal health,so I noticed a trick he moved on to retain his open throat technique that, even Ken says is so crucial.(I am guessing it was his reason?)
Brad set his mic stand up high,so his throat was naturally open facing upward to the mic, then he must of found it easier to insentuate his intricate changes with nothing obstructing.
At first I wondered if was due to his band mates being all 6ft 5,like Tom S only they never ended up near his mic so it must of been to retain opened throat..
I tried it and it sure works.
Did you ever hear of such a thing Ken?
there are a LOT of people that need to know this!!! lol. if you can sing in tune, half the battle is won in learning singing!
Yes, it's an important skill, and we all need to work on this from time to time.
I tried learning a song without ever hearing it. When I finally listened to the original, I found that it was completely contrary. My son in law sand he liked my version just as much as the original. Made me happy l. "With or without you" was the song by U2.. not really a u2 fan but I like this song.
There are many ways to approach a given song.
very important comments about brightness and darkness and their effect on pitch -- thank you!
You're welcome, Pallas Ferrante!
the most positive guy on the net...must be all that sun \m/ keep rockin Ken
Thank you, Dieter!
Since I started watching your videos, I have stopped watching anything or anyone else. I get so much out of them. Seriously thinking of getting your course. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom. You are so generous and helpful.
Happy to help, sheeba!
I'm glad the videos are helping you, Maureen!
Thanks for this tip and specially showing "false" and "right" ...that helped me a lot :)
Thanks for the kind words, Roxy! That's awesome that you're getting the course! You'll like what happens to your voice!
Ken thank you for all your posts. I am older and just starting to learn and find all your videos so helpful. You can teach an old dog new tricks. And the proof is in the singing.
George Pedone- Awesome! I'd love to hear your progress!
For the visual learners, using a program life adobe audition allows you to see the pitch of your recorded voice. So for listening playback you can SEE how well you're on target. I know this helped me a lot.
Thanks, Richard!
Great! The slinky analogy made SO much sense....totally worked!!! You...Rock Sir!
Theron Hayden Happy to hear that!
Can we just talk about how amazing that slinky impression was though? Lol
Sure. I challenge you to a slinky impersonation duel!
Not kidding these videos helped me find my voice! So thankful! You’re awesome Ken!!!
You rock!
Totally love your videos! Vocals are practically impossible to teach realative to any other instrument. Atleast with guitar you can say play fret 5 on the high e string or etc. Anyway, much respect to you and thanks for the lessons 😆
Thank you for the kind words, Frankie! Nice to hear your comments!
Fantastic video as always Ken. Do you think inverting the scale while you are excersing would also help, what I mean is instead of going 1-2-3-2-1; go 3-2-1-2-3? Once again great work!
Wow, this guy is brilliant! I have awful pitch so it’s a work in progress…lots of work!
These are great tips, what a fantastic teacher.
Glad you like them!
1:51 Count Dracula laughing haha

My voice started to get brighter thank ken
Amazing teaching !!
You're welcome, lovekai88! Thanks for the compliments!
Love the positive psychology of dropping down 🤩

Those slinky imitation sounds were on point! Nice. Very helpful
Thanks for the evaluation!
You have helped me so much thank you Ken!!!!!!
Thanks, TheOzflyer, for the comments and for the request!
Did you start the course? if so how's it going. im Aussie too.
Wow. I just realized my mistake. You rock man! I need to come down on the notes. Man I was so.blind.
i really understand you better when i smoke. Very helpful vids.
This was so helpful love how expressive you are
Thank you!
DIDNT even watch the vid yet, but I already know there’s going to be a lot of “LaAAaaAAhHhhH”
Rock on!
😂😂😂
As a singer of thirty five years having sung with top notch muso's I do not scoop up or enter from the back, I imagine in on an elevator I go up to the floor number,(the note) the door opens, and bang I'm right on that floor,I sing the note perfect because I'm om the right floor. This I visualise as a fluid instant and smooth motion.
Have you ever gotten out of an elevator and started walking when you realized you weren't on the right floor? Ha! I have. But yeah. I hear what you're saying. That's totally cool, Gra!
LOL,that's when you hit a bum note...oops..wrong floor!!!
You're such a great teacher. I wish I could come to you for lessons
Thanks, K K!
Ken i love your vids! Thanks so much for showing us the science and the proof in your vids
Glad you like them!
That was a great lesson! Thank-You Ken!
You're welcome, The Photographer!
Thanks a lot Ken. that helps me a lot to avoid singing flat. Thank you!
Stefan Preuhs- You are welcome!
Yeah I started recording myself both vocal and guitar and it helps tremendously because you hear yoursrlf and hear what people listening to you hear.
It really helps because when you sing you know how its gonna sound to them.
You are an awesome teacher. Thank you!
Thanks so much!
When i sow your lessons, i began to study English language 👍👍👍) Great Boland and Bruce Lee !!!!))))))
Very good!
Wow Ken….such a genius….make it look so simple…..it’s frying my brain….but I love it…not giving up…love ya…..b watching….🔥🔥
Very Helpful! Glad I found this video!
I'm glad you did, too!
Man you described every issue I have with singing in one video!
My course can help. Check it out. kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
Man. You are a great teacher.
Pause at 3:54 and try not to laugh.
I enjoyed the video, thanks so much for these uploads. I'm 28, am gifted with music instruments, but my voice is so raspy and stubborn. I need serious help learning how to sing.
You like my smile? 😀
Great tip. I just tried it out with you and worked really well. Thanks🙂
You're welcome!
Amazing teacher! Thanks for sharing.
Dear sir, your hair and your facial features remind me of Phoebe from Friends. I don't mean any disrespect. I love that character. You are a real professional, a life-savor for guys who can't sing like myself or look to improve their singing. Thank you so much.
Thanks for your comment, Fred! :-)
Helpful Video SirTamplin, Greetings from Phillipines~
Thank you so much Ken!
My pleasure!
Ken you Rock, thanks I needed some motivation.
Good Job Ken!
Love from Bangladesh!
Got to release that inner critic. Try having some fun with it.
My vocal is quite pitchy, thanks for the tips Ken!
You're welcome, Ash!
Great video! Thanks so much, Ken!
