2021 Genesis GV80 First Look

  • The all-new Genesis GV80 is the first true competitor to the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE from Asia. Why? Because until now companies like Lexus and Acura have used mainstream FWD platforms to make their two and three row crossovers, but not Genesis. They decided to go the extra mile and craft an all-new SUV/crossover platform with all-new turbo engines and rear wheel drive for a true head-to-head competitor. Game on.

    This looks like a winner! Kia/Hyundai/Genesis is on the "come" as they say... Between the Stinger, G70, Telluride, Palisade, Veloster, and now this they are hitting home runs.

      Of all those cars, this is my least favorite. The design of the GV80 reminds me of a car from like Grand Theft Auto or some concept car. Interior looks good but outside just isn't my thing. People make fun of BMW and Lexus grills, but this one is massive. The shape is too round IMO. The Telluride is popular not because of the price (although that helps), but because it looks badass. This just doesn't to me.

    Alex, I live in Korea and plan to buy a GV80 when the 3.5 V6 is available. Also, the diesel is an in-line 6, 3.0L, not a V6.
    As you probably know, The Genesis GV80 is now on sale in Korea. I have driven one at the dealer at Gangnam, a really super car dealership!
    Using the current exchange rate of 1155 KRW = $1.00
    Starting price in Korea is 65,800,000 KRW or $56,970
    Fully loaded is about 80,000,000 KRW or $69,264 (with ALL options)
    .
    The genesis salesman told me he expects the gas V6 will be about $2,000 cheaper than the diesel here in Korea. It will be interesting what the starting price is when they go on sale in the US.

    Lexus is in dilemma. If they pack the new cars with new gadgets/technologies, then they would lose the crown of reliability. But if they continue to their cars with old technologies in order to keep the title for being reliable, they would lose customers, especially young customers. Right now, Lexus is really boring to drive. You do feel premium in a Lexus but not Luxury any more. Lexus is starting like Buick and Lincoln which attract older people more than young people.
    Now when you think about it. For the same price on the same class of vehicles, let's say the RX is about $50K. If this car would also be the same price as the RX, you'd get more stuffs for spending $50K. Lexus is actually more expensive than most competitors because you are just spending $50K for reliability from older technologies where other competitors like this one, the Mercedes GLE 350, BMW X4 and so on actually come with more newer stuffs/design and better performance.

    Great effort under trying conditions, Alex. Your comments that Genesis appears to be going after the European brands is spot on, I think. It's important to keep in mind that the Genesis brand is aimed in large part at Asian markets where Japanese and American brands are minor players in the luxury market compared to European (and especially German) brands. Here in the US we often assume that our market is the highest priority for almost every brand. But Korea has its sights on their own home market and that of other Asian markets, especially the 800 lb gorilla in the room, China. The perspective manifests itself in the Hyundai brand as well where the Korean built Palisade has a more European flair than the American built Telluride. European brands have long been the ultimate prestige brands in Asia where there remains considerable antipathy toward Japan as a result of WWII. Genesis has found considerable success with their G80 and G90 sedans versus MB, BMW, and Audi. As I recall, in fact, in the first six months after introduction of the latest G90, sales of comparable Mercedes and BMW brands dropped by about 1/3rd in Korea.

    I did watch the Korean release event on YT weeks ago, so I’m very aware of the car. Genesis has to build out their stand alone dealerships. Period! I went to a Hyundai dealership a few years ago to look at the G80 and couldn’t stomach it and I’m not some privileged guy. My point is Hyundai dealerships are really awful and the same sales people selling all the Hyundai’s (many of which are very good cars) were selling Genesis. The problem was they knew far less than I did about the car and didn’t really seem to care about making the sale.
    Those aren’t fake air vents. They’re lights and meant to match the size and lines of the rear and front lights.

      Genesis has faced HUGE challenges in deploying their dealerships in the US. Like Japanese luxury sub-brands before them (e.g. Lexus, Acura, Infiniti) Genesis initially tried to deny existing Hyundai dealers access to Genesis vehicles or to build completely separate dealerships to offer Genesis products. They were sued by a number of Hyundai dealers and forced to backtrack and postpone opening standalone Genesis dealers in much of the US. The situation is changing after Genesis and dealers reached compromise solutions in a number of states but the fallout continues. Your experience is not atypical.

      Stephen Hendricks I’m very familiar with the Genesis story around the dealerships. I was asked to become part of a Dallas Genesis dealership ownership group.
      Genesis USA had no concrete answers for us regarding 1) how they would choose stand alone dealerships and what showroom design mandated would include 2) when they would start licensing dealerships to sell their cars 3) how soon they would be releasing the GV80 here in the U.S. 4) when they would be releasing the GV70 5) when they planned release of an all electric or hybrid option on either of the two SUV’s or cars 6) How they were going to support dealerships with ad buys etc.. This was November 2019.
      As for my experience and the experience of others test driving Genesis cars at Hyundai dealership, my experience was absolutely typical.

      @cargueone1971 4 роки тому +1

      @Raschaud Farmer The MDX isn't even as good as a Palisade, yet alone as a Genesis GV80. My family has owned Toyotas for 50 years. Toyota is no where close to what they were during the Eiji Toyoda and Ichiro Suzuki years. Not even close. Second, Honda has nowhere near the capacity or the capital of what current Hyundai is Today, it's barely hanging on. Unlike Honda who recruited ex GM designers and Engineers after the Big Layoffs ( which is rare for a culture that is not open in recieving outsiders in their business culture) during the 2008 Bankruptcy, Hyundai picked up 35 of the Best designers and engineers from the German competition. The innovative company Honda was, is no longer there. Your comment reminds me when the LS400 came out and I was truly amazed, in the fall of 1989 how revolutionary it was. BMW and Mercedes fans were commenting that Toyota didn't have Iconic cars like the W123 or the 2002tti. How can it even be as good? How hard it was for them to accept Toyota's achievement. Then 20 years later, the Germans reinvented themselves with amazing vehicles that were only hampered by poor reliability, but were far more desirable than any thing current Lexus/Acura was building. Name a premium platform Honda uses for Acura? There's none. In the end That is what your comment reminds me of. Living in the past, letting time pass them by. With new progressions, History repeats itself self. There's always a company reinventing itself to greatness. In 10 years it'll be someone else when Hyundai will rest on it's laurels, like Honda and Toyota, and someone will pass them. But for the next ten years, Hyundai/Kia/Genesis will be the ones to keep on eye on.

    • @cargueone1971
      @cargueone1971 4 роки тому

      @Raschaud Farmer but the LS is on a premium RWD platform. The RDX, a stretched Accord/Civic. Sorry you're talking like a Honda fanboy. Being in the automotive industry for 30 years, it's a matter of time before some partners up with Honda. Hyundai corporation made a profit of 34.8 billion dollars. Honda corporation made 9 billion. I love Toyotas, but even I know Hyundai is the one to watch. Honda has been dead for a decade.

    • @cargueone1971
      @cargueone1971 4 роки тому

    Wow, thanks for doing so much research on the features on this car! Otherwise, based on some other impressions of the car, I didn't see any reason to get this over a Paliside/Telluride. Good to know that we can ditch the useless 3rd row. I do worry that most SUV drivers are not going to like the feel of a RWD and probably stiffer suspension.

    • @747-pilot
      @747-pilot 4 роки тому +3

      If it has a STIFFER suspension and harsher ride because of the 22-inch wheels. And a NOISIER engine / exhaust, then that is a huge *DOWNGRADE* for me!! Why would I pay much *MORE* for a vehicle that is much *WORSE* in my opinion (rollseyes). A large SUV has to emphasize COMFORT AND LUXURY, first and foremost for things like long road trips.
      If I want something "sporty", I will buy a sports coupe for times when I feel like driving like that (rollseyes). Exactly! Telluride became an even better bargain! In fact, if I bought a Telluride, I would buy the top-of-line Prestige model, and replace those horrendous 20 inch wheels with the 18 inch wheels, for a SOFTER ride and better off-road capability!! (bigger sidewalls)
      And just FYI, I just drove a 2020 Toyota Highlander and a 2020 Telluride, back to back (one after the other) and was stunned how *DEAD QUIET* the TELLURIDE engine/exhaust was!!! Even at close to 4000 RPM, I could not hear anything. Whereas the HIGHLANDER engine/exhaust was so *NOISY AND UNREFINED.* I'm really torn between the Highlander's bulletproof quality, reliability and longevity VS. the Telluride refinement, quietness and comfort!

      Hyundai/kia/Genesis are right up there with Toyota and above Honda at this point. Minus their older Theta II turbos but that's been redesigned and they handled the fiasco decently for a big automaker. Most of the Toyota/Lexus needs a redesign pretty bad and even the redesigned ones have the interior build quality or premium design of the Koreans.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide

      Unlikely. The issue is the transmission, or lack there of. Hyundai doesn’t have a transaxle that will work with that kind of power aside from the new 8 speed DCT which is probably not the best pair for the Palisade.

    Shes breath taking. They're going to dominate the luxury suv market. No way this vehicle is 44k like ex 350. It's going to start at midday 50's to 60k. And Awd model will hit mid 60s. This meant to compete with Benz, Audi and bmw. Its shame they cant offer this fir 40k. Demand would be a high that itll out the remainder SUVs out if buisness

  • @michalklucz6907

    The new Genesis brand looks like a game-changer. Reminds me of the Lexus brand, a generation ago
    They just need to level up their marketing. If you make great cars, but nobody knows it, will they sell?
    The answer is no, they won't.
    Costs for the GV80? $50-70k, which is why it "feels more premium" than the $40k Lexus RX
