Who says it "should be used with pro mode only" - there's absolutely no reason to use it that way! If that's the standard, then with the pro mode, it's still losing to the majority of phones in this segment, cuz there are waay too many phones with larger sensors and better lenses

Sony devices are strictly for purists. Im glad such device still exists where market is flooded with AI things. As photography enthusiast, Sony's image processing is way better than top players. Foliage output is beyond imagination with excellent artifacts control. Sharpness control is spot on. Images are evenly sharp even at dead corners. Colour spectrum is close to flat ( which can be seen on full frame cameras ). Noise control is also very good for such sensor. Every photo clicks demands post processing since it doesn't have AI interference which is a good thing.
Actually Sony is not a Camera-focused smartphone, it's more like a Content Consuming machine with Bravia screen, full stage front facing stereo speakers, 3.5mm jack, microsd slot and with a camera that's just barely good enough for normal user but a* "mini Alpha camera" for professional photographers Edit: * grammar error, (it was "an mini Alpha camera")

Sony logic is to overprice and disappoint, that is why i have boycotted them for a while now. Before i buy lots of Sony stuff, but they changed to be a company that overpriced and gave out products that they made with purpose with flaws that was not acceptable for me. The headphone jack and memory card is the only thing i want from that phone, but i will not change to it because they cheating people on the 1 inch sensor high price and no S-pen. Sony needs to be better to be worth the price, and for me to buy a new phone.

Holy F_k i have pixel 7pro.i cant expect this phone has major bugs from day1. its been 2yrs google failed to fix them in regular (useless) security updates. Network is major issues in pixels. No one keeps phone more 2yrs and there no point of 7 years updates its just marketing.i never felt any changes after any updates. sony,nokia, Motorola Androids are more optimized than pixels. And tensor chips are average nothing special. Didn't expect from Google with their own android.
I think it made for the Photo and Video pros who like to use manual control and don't want computational photography. If you just want to capture the scene as it was, with no processing on device, this is what it's good for. Afterwards you take it to Lightroom for editing.
All phones does software processing. Sony is no different. It is only a question of which processing you prefer. Besides manual controls are offered even on midrange models of many brands.
I would have given my money to Sony if the pricing was better and if they had longer support. Just purchased a S24 ultra for about $800 (after exchange bonus and some promos), and got samsung buds pro2 worth about $250 free with it. The Sony with XM5s free was about $1400. Was a no brainer and feels like a steal. I now have a device which has 7 years of updates and support, which is nuts. I love Sony, but they really need to get their stuff sorted about updates and pricing.

Call me crazy but I prefer the Sony picture processing over the Samsung one, even when zooming. Images have this soft look that so few smartphones offer. The majority of them is over processing and AI-tweaking everything. It's too much. Of course, I wish we had Exmor T on every rear lens, but the Sony way of handling images is nice.
I don't think you're crazy, Sony is better at replicating natural looks. I think a lot of people that are inclined to be photographers, rather than people just publishing vivid images probably prefer them. But it does struggle at night end just in public testing where people choose what they like, Sony's perform pretty dismally. Doesn't mean the photos are the worst or even bad, or even not the best necessarily, it just means people don't like the way they look. They might be a more accurate replication of what is in front of the camera though. There's definitely been a fair share of people that are sort of sick of HDR photography on smartphones. I saw an article in the Wall Street journal feature section of some photographers that are actually intentionally going back and using ancient phones just to avoid the HDR processing

A 1.5k screen (yes it's the minimum today, and above all, Samsung was criticized for years for its S+ which were "just FHD"), 4 years minimum of Android update (but the smartphone must be released in February at the latest, not 2-3 months before the new Android version and especially the new Snapdragon) because there, it's no longer even 3 years of updating but 2 years in real life, a 1" main sensor, better video stabilization, keeping its niche features (Pro Camera) by adding mainstream features ( good auto camera like on iPhones, Galaxy and other smartphones), a "really" good telescopic zoom, and above all a price of $1000- $1100 max, there, Sony will be able to get back into the game. 🙏🏽
I just wish Samsung and Google offered top tier phones with micro SD and a headphone jack. After LG split Sony and Asus are all that's left and I don't think Asus phones have an SD card slot.
I so badly would love to support this company for preserving the headphone jack in the SD card but I just can't make sense of the pricing and some of the decisions they make.
I'm just sad that the "camera focused" phone isn't delivering enough on the camera experience. It's mostly a "content consuming" phone over anything else.
I don't know if its the same for the 1VI but on the V it takes a while to get used to but you can consistently get better shots than the Samsung with practice and learning the software. Its a really difficukt camera to use to be honest.

thats where I differ though, the experience has been great, not for gaming obv. overall most things have been imporved and I had a great time with the phone... just like most flagships out there today! Where the 1mVI let me down was with the optics, when compared to the rest.. I am very familiar with the alphas, my cameras have been a99, a6300, a7III,a7s3 and now a a7c2... also have a zv1 and rx100mv and professionally fs7 and fx9... as you see, all my cameras are sony, been that way for the last 10 years or so....
Honestly I do like some shots on the Sony but remember that Sony actually is a lot more of a smaller device than many Ultras. Probably why it tends to heat up faster on the phone. Most smartphones now are behemoth and putting a powerful chips on such a small body will ofc concur some major heating issues. I actually wished they slapped the 1 IV main sensor on the telephoto and zoom but I guess dimensionanl limitations persists and may also need a very large camera housing. Otherwise they'll have to abandon the tech and resort to digital zoom with high megapixels camera. But I also like their variable zoom lens. Well it's a Sony. Features are already enough for the time being. Maybe more tuning is needed.
