Sony's attitude of valuing its technological capabilities and creators is wonderful, but unfortunately it is being pressured by the iPhone and Galaxy, which have completely different approaches, and Chinese manufacturers, who have different national systems, are working with the government to reduce prices, which is reducing the number of countries where the phone is sold, putting Sony in a difficult position. Sony doesn't like artificial images created by AI, even if they look beautiful to the untrained eye, but it's clear that they believe that cameras should capture the truth optically. Sony always says that it's for creators, but they probably think that if anyone can take the same photo with AI, it's not creative. I personally agree with the idea of reflecting the photographer's intention, and in fact, the optical photos created by Sony have a more natural finish than those processed by AI. Above all, photos created by AI are not interesting because you can't tell the photographer's intention when you look at them. However, I agree that there are disadvantages to trying to cover everything optically in the limited space of a smartphone, such as not being able to make the sensor larger. Also, Sony is technically capable of completely suppressing overexposure automatically, but the reason they don't do this is a mystery as to whether there is a problem with the image creation that Sony is aiming for, or whether they dislike the idea of brightening only the dark parts and resulting in a flat image. I do think that Sony's direction is effective in expressing the brightness of the light source and the glossiness of the subject, but I prefer relatively low-key photos, so when I use Xperia, I often take photos with negative exposure compensation.
I’m probably one of those weird users who doesn’t buy xperia’s for the camera. I just love the device and its design. I’m most interested in screen, dac and flashlight, gps and signal performance. I’ve had the 1iv, 5iv and 1v all of which have had compass accuracy issues. The sound from the headphone jack on the 1v was pretty poor, especially compared to my ip15 pro usb c headphones and we all know what the flashlight is like 😅. Keep up the great work Basil 👍💪
What they need to improve is too tiny sensor sizes and wide lens should really be 12mm. Also it's time for 16GB of ram and 512GB of rom. Then they can scrap micro sd card. Btw is sony album app included?
There is no smartphone camera system to rule them all and in the end it is a very competent system. For preorder you get the xm5 headphones witch make Sense for the price but some of us don't need the xm5 so again this device should be lower in price more or less as the S23 plus. Many articles are coming out saying that the PRO-C will be the technical marvel that is to come from Sony but I dont want to imagine the price.
Sony (1V and I guess 1VI) produces excelent (not overprocessed) Raw-Files that can be edited in Lightroom perfectly! You can raise the quality and details in the Sony Raws so much compared to their Jpgs. It is absolutely impressive. With Samsung S24u for example you get very bad Raws (Pro Mode and Expert Raw) because they are already highly processed and they are not real Raws, only processed Jpgs in a Raw-Container. A thirdparty app can solve this little bit (motionCam or gCam), but it is tricky and not always good. So for photograper-freaks the Sony is way better than any other phone.
Haters most likely never had a Xperia phone before, they may recite any device specs, but that’s all they’ve got: it’s all on the sheets they’re looking at.
I'll probably be preordering it, as I like the improved zoom, the tele macro plus the longer-lasting battery. Although looking at 15:29, it shows that Sony needs to change the telephoto from 12 to 48mp to retain detail and add an AF to the selfie (like they did on my old XZ Premium!!) It really seems as though this is the Xperia 1 IV (b) as Sony is only changing a single camera each year (since the IV) Hopefully, next year Sony upgrade all the cameras, as I was hoping the rumours were true and all cameras were improved sensor-wise size.
Auto mode is finally good? In telephoto im interested only in day, generally i would expect good quality details from photo/video on day (With telephoto) and night (main camera only) without any manual settings. It has problems with overexposure in automode or not? I mean i know i could go for s24u for example but i like the fact it has 3.5 jaxk and i like Sony plus I'm not sure but i think tehre will be more details in not that hard overshapened picture, on the other hand Samsung has 200 mpix main camera..
Basil, fantastic detailed camera session. Some great points and in-depth explanations 👏👏 I think I said this last time, but it's just not quite good enough for me to wish to change from my 1V. I still feel it's a side grade. However, that said, if anyone is looking to purchase a Sony for the first time or it's been a while or change from a different phone, then most definitely buy the Sony 1 VI.
Is it better than the Pixel 8 Pro? The photos, I saw some comparisons on UA-cam, it seems the Xperia has improved from the last model, but the Pixel edges it out a bit. Sony photos seem not as processed more original and true to colors.
I think i will hold out for the Samsung unpacked event and see what the Galaxy Flip 6 is like. The new screen resolution and size is a letdown for me compared to previous xperias. Need to compare it in a store to see what phone my next one will be. Also how come they do not include a charger any more. That is just cheap....
hmmm, I figure interms of photography any camera Sony puts out it will be good so no stressing or fuss about that. Where I would like SONY to seriously take LEAD is video. I own a couple of SONY cameras (A1 & A7Siii) so a SONY mobile would be seriously welcomed for many reasons especially the flagship mobile. After looking at your video, hearing what you said, it still looks to me SONY is not going make me change from IOS when I really would like to. Thanks for video.
I have been a loyal sony fan back since the sony Ericsson days . Ive been rocking my original Xperia 1 since 2019 its been faultless. However my network in Australia is switching off 3G. So i have no choice but to upgrade the handset. The new Xperia 1 VI just became available to order here in Australia,so im very excited to see the big jump in technology compared to my old 2019 model Xperia.
Thanks Yes, 256 GB is an insult, especially compared to the 512 GB in my 6 years old Galaxy Note 9. I feel cornered these days. I feel the need to replace this GN9. I've selected the Xperia 1 V and VI so far, because of the 3.5 mm jack and the expendable storage, up to 1 GB and 1.5 GB respectively. No other brand are offering these features. But I've many reviews pointing that these Sony phones have disappointing cameras, considering their high price. One complaint though : 5x, 7x, 50x, 100x mean nothing, since it depends on the sensor size and the wider focal at the start of the range. What about a 2x lens ? But what then when you know its wider focal is 12 mm ? (yes, I'm talking about a DSLR lens I have !) The only way to properly compare lenses is the 24x36 (Full Frame) equivalence. But for sure, sales persons don't like this ! For them, it's better to tell buyers : "look, mine is bigger, it does x10 !"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the camera software is till NOT final, right? I think Sony promised that all features and camera applications will come later, right?
Yes and no. The version I tested is final in that it is the software launching with the phone's general release, but there will be an update to add more pro video functionality. This will be made available in Autumn. Hope that helps! Basil
No stupid questions unless they're mean spirited or trolling. Hopefully this helps: Xperia 1 VI main camera: Sensor size: 1/1.35" Xperia 1 III main camera: Sensor size: 1/1.7" So the Xperia 1 VI sensor is bigger. You're referring to the telephoto camera with the 1/3.5" sensor, and you're actually right on that one. Xperia 1 VI tele camera: Sensor size: 1/3.5" Xperia 1 III tele camera: Sensor size: 1/2.9" But with the 1 VI, you get continuous zoom and excellent range from 85mm to 170mm. Have a great day, Basil
Shout out for a really honest take on the 1 VI camera capabilities ! I'd love to have your point of view on how this compares to a Pro-I ? I'm wondering if I should go the 1 VI (was about to ...) or hold on to the Pro-I in the hope for a successor to finally drop soon... my main focus being still photography, I hardly ever shoot videos. Also I am one of the lovers of the Photo Pro app, how does the new app compare to it from your point of view ?
Does the photo quality is better than S24 ultra and Iphone 15 promax..? THank you I traded my Xperia 1v for iphone 15 promax last year.. and now havign S24 ultra.. I somewhat miss the sony feel.
You buy a Sony phone because you love Sony and their philosophies not because they put out the best image quality. You just have to be ok with that. The camera UI is unmatched on a phone and they still support two of the greatest hardware legacy features in the microSD card slot and 3.5mm headphone jack. At least the VI does have class leading battery life now.
Sony cost too much once I get a phone like that I'm holding on to it.. and I don't want to spend that much money if I'm only going to have 2 years of security and OS update and they got rid of the 4k.. I know in the US you can't trade the sony in nowhere. No AT&T no. T-Mobile no. Verizon like nowhere. Is at a point here in the US. It's just basically Samsung and Apple Basically only choice oh Google hanging by thread. OnePlus is not in T-Mobile no more. Motorola not at Verizon no more. Something is going on in the US with the phones. It's not good.. The Monopoly is bad.. there's no more variety in the US.. basically forcing Samsung and Apple down your throat.. lol
as a xiaomi user, the one thing i found that Sony's lacking is the software features Sony have some but it's all about photography i have infrarred sensors i have a calculator that's implement a dozen more converter i have android's second space feature that work seamlessly i have a better sidebar implementation ... would love to see they improve their software more
Thank you for the Video! For sure i would go for the Samsung Ultra as my father has it but i need memory expansion for my music and the headphonejack is also welcome (if it is better than in the 1V:). I preordered it at 15th and hope i will get it soon! Yesterday i heard about Pro-c and was not sure to cancel my order and wait for the new Pro for the better sensor but then i read that it will come "maybe" in october or later:/ My Samsung 20+ has battery issues, the photos are not very good and all the phones i tried this and last year could not satisfy me at least for memory issues and softwareproblems, thats why i will be waiting for the 1Vi;) best regards from Ringo
Was thinking. Maybe Sony is tired of the question of leaving the cellphone market that they gone against for years. So to go against that maybe the rethinking their approach to get more mainstream and less nisch. So the pro models maybe doing a comeback while xperia 1 and 5 get less nisch and more mainstream and the 10 is all mainstream. Could mean growing in markets. I dont like leaving 21:9 but sure less apps would work strange when it comes to screen format. Do hate you cant even film in 21:9.
Thank you, finally a decent review about the camera zoom, moon shots explanations etc. Unfortunately Sony does not allow couriers outside Sony Approved country sites, so me in South Africa can not buy it, since Sony does not sell their phones in Africa for example, Sony confirmed via email they only ship to local countries which has the phone available. Sony loosing a lot of buyers due to this.
Thank you for one of the most honest reviews about this device. I was genuinely excited with rumours way back that Sony were going to do a wholesale upgrade of all sensors, but unfortunately they didn't. For now, its a no to coming back to Sony
can you do focus bracketing or focus stacking with the sony? Like, in manual focus mode, can the camera do burst capture, so that i can change the focus as it takes pics? The huawei does really fast burst photography, but only in auto focus mode. The sony doesn't do as much in phone post processing, but the Huawei does. but what do the images look like from the sony after ive played with them in Lumina Neo? Shots from my Huawei P60 Art (one step up from the p60 Pro) often can't be improved much in Lumina, but I bet the pics from the sony will benefit a lot from edits in Neo. Anyone have anything to contribute? Any one done this that can upload example images before and after. I really enjoy editing my best shots myself.
Does the Xperia 1 VI still have dynamic vibration during movies / videos? Sony don’t even mention this on their website and always thought it was quite a cool and immersive feature.
Eagerly waiting for that classic speaker test. Also would like to see the battery performance test and a screen comparison especially the outdoors performance. How is the thermal behaviour of the phone? I would like to suggest that you may add a feel good meter of sorts in short medium and long term usage. With all the extensive experience I have of owning devices I must say that at the end of the day it is the feel good factor that wins over all the positive and negative points. So much so people are willing to pay a premium for that. Now I know it would vary from person to person as some would pay that premium for a certain brand, yet I think there can be some bare minimum standard of that feel good factor that can be established at an overall average, IUKWIM. If not a meter then at least it should be expressed in some standardized way in the review to add another dimension for the viewers in better understanding the device. For example some find a heavy large bulkier device in their hand while others prefer to hold a more compact and light weight device. While a vast majority of people wouldn't like a phone that feels light to the extent of feeling weak or cheap. In my opinion Xperia strikes that perfect balance. I like the 1 ii the most for that matter. Even the 1 iii doesn't feel as good as the 1 ii does in my opinion. Looking forward, cheers.
I think I would like to see the following: 1. The headphone jack if it supports higher ohm for other higher quality headphones or earphones. 2. The Gaming Performance (i.e. Genshin after 30 min of gameplay). 3. The speakers 4. How good is the display under the sunlight and in the dark
Please do a video on setting its display to maximum manual brightness, look at how Sunlight vision perform, how legible can it go, and does this mode also apply to camera and video function, and how long does it take for the display to go dimmer, under hot sunny day (preferably measured temperature during that period). Then do another same test, now set display to auto brightness instead.
Pre ordered mine It will arrive in 4 days Sony phones have a special charm It's not just the cameras that are great It has powerful front speakers Sd card 3.5 jack Weight less than 200 grams Two days of battery really two days, no joke Everyone is talking about Xperia 1vi battery Even the display I have no problem with it. full hd plus it's Very enough I have previously held a RedMagic 9 Pro and an Asus 7 Pro, both of those phones have great display but just need more brightness As for Sony it provided higher brightness than those phones I mentioned, so I am completely satisfied
You didn't buy mark-V, or mark-IV, or mark-III, or mark-II, or even the original Xperia 1. All the previous hardware revision had 4k and you didn't buy it. Stop pretending you will buy an Xperia 1 VI if it's 4k. We all know you're here just to hate.
@@gilgameshlfx7006 Not true, I’ve always loved Xperia phones. I haven’t had one for a long time, pre-ordered the VI on impulse when it was announced but done some digging and spec wise, for the price, is not worth it for me. If the VI was at least QHD, it would complete this phone and I would have kept my pre-order. I hope they bring the higher resolution back, especially when they are charging their customers this much.
Regarding to the spec sheet of the Xperia 1 VI on the UK web site, it does not have OIS for the 85-170 and it also does not record 4K 120 on the 85-170. The Xperia 1 V did not have this restriction on the telephoto lens. Is this due to the added macro capabilities? Great video by the way, liled it a lot.

I hear the speakers are apparently top tier. The screen looks gorgeous for an FHD+ and the phone itself is a sex bomb!
What they need to improve is too tiny sensor sizes and wide lens should really be 12mm. Also it's time for 16GB of ram and 512GB of rom. Then they can scrap micro sd card.
Btw is sony album app included?
Lower pixel density is actually better in lowlight situations and has higher DR
There is no smartphone camera system to rule them all and in the end it is a very competent system. For preorder you get the xm5 headphones witch make Sense for the price but some of us don't need the xm5 so again this device should be lower in price more or less as the S23 plus. Many articles are coming out saying that the PRO-C will be the technical marvel that is to come from Sony but I dont want to imagine the price.
I’ve pre-ordered mine. Cannot wait to give the camera a go.
yeah. A go into the garbage bag .
Which color?

FYI amazon have this on pre order sale for 1082 and you can still claim the headphones! not sure if it's an error on their part

The front camera’s stabilisation under low light looks terrible 🙊
Sony (1V and I guess 1VI) produces excelent (not overprocessed) Raw-Files that can be edited in Lightroom perfectly! You can raise the quality and details in the Sony Raws so much compared to their Jpgs. It is absolutely impressive. With Samsung S24u for example you get very bad Raws (Pro Mode and Expert Raw) because they are already highly processed and they are not real Raws, only processed Jpgs in a Raw-Container. A thirdparty app can solve this little bit (motionCam or gCam), but it is tricky and not always good. So for photograper-freaks the Sony is way better than any other phone.
if the main camera is a 1 inch sensor and the other two are at least half inch then I buy, I know this is possible.
Haters most likely never had a Xperia phone before, they may recite any device specs, but that’s all they’ve got: it’s all on the sheets they’re looking at.
I'll probably be preordering it, as I like the improved zoom, the tele macro plus the longer-lasting battery.
Although looking at 15:29, it shows that Sony needs to change the telephoto from 12 to 48mp to retain detail and add an AF to the selfie (like they did on my old XZ Premium!!)
It really seems as though this is the Xperia 1 IV (b) as Sony is only changing a single camera each year (since the IV)
Hopefully, next year Sony upgrade all the cameras, as I was hoping the rumours were true and all cameras were improved sensor-wise size.
Sound, DAC quality?
same as previous gen, rather meh.

Enjoy it!
Thanks
Yes, 256 GB is an insult, especially compared to the 512 GB in my 6 years old Galaxy Note 9.
(yes, I'm talking about a DSLR lens I have !)
The only way to properly compare lenses is the 24x36 (Full Frame) equivalence. But for sure, sales persons don't like this ! For them, it's better to tell buyers : "look, mine is bigger, it does x10 !"
I thought Sony used T coating on the lenses but I spotted alot of flaring
This is due to reflections from the glass in the front that protects the lens. Only the main camera has a special coating applied to it.
Basil
@@tech_edit Thanks, excelente review as always, very complete.
Stupid question but does this mean the main camera sensor is smaller on the vi than on the 1 iii ? Apparently it's 1/1.7 Vs 1/3.5?
No stupid questions unless they're mean spirited or trolling. Hopefully this helps:
Xperia 1 VI main camera: Sensor size: 1/1.35"
Xperia 1 III main camera: Sensor size: 1/1.7"
So the Xperia 1 VI sensor is bigger. You're referring to the telephoto camera with the 1/3.5" sensor, and you're actually right on that one.
Xperia 1 VI tele camera: Sensor size: 1/3.5"
Xperia 1 III tele camera: Sensor size: 1/2.9"
But with the 1 VI, you get continuous zoom and excellent range from 85mm to 170mm.
Have a great day, Basil
i pre ordered im excited ❤❤
In U.S. market sony will release xperia Pro-C..dont worry
Finally a phone with controlled exposer.
If there isn't any heating issues this is it.
Why would Sony not launch this phone in US? I had decided this was going to be my next phone.
Does the photo quality is better than S24 ultra and Iphone 15 promax..? THank you I traded my Xperia 1v for iphone 15 promax last year.. and now havign S24 ultra.. I somewhat miss the sony feel.
A Real pity it's overpriced by around £200/300 against the Google 8 pro.
I have the 1V for year now, probably upgrade in 2-3 years again (or until i break it 😮)
Sony is the choice - forget about others, and iphone can be a work horse but no fun !
my huawei mate 60 pro is fantastic at macro. video and photo. nice video!
Yes it is, thanks for the comment. Basil
OS overview
The Monopoly is bad.. there's no more variety in the US.. basically forcing Samsung and Apple down your throat.. lol
as a xiaomi user, the one thing i found that Sony's lacking is the software features
Sony have some but it's all about photography
i have infrarred sensors
i have a calculator that's implement a dozen more converter
i have android's second space feature that work seamlessly
i have a better sidebar implementation
...
would love to see they improve their software more
Thank you for the Video! For sure i would go for the Samsung Ultra as my father has it but i need memory expansion for my music and the headphonejack is also welcome (if it is better than in the 1V:).
I preordered it at 15th and hope i will get it soon!
Yesterday i heard about Pro-c and was not sure to cancel my order and wait for the new Pro for the better sensor but then i read that it will come "maybe" in october or later:/
My Samsung 20+ has battery issues, the photos are not very good and all the phones i tried this and last year could not satisfy me at least for memory issues and softwareproblems, thats why i will be waiting for the 1Vi;)
best regards from Ringo
Such a shame Sony havent addressed PWM concerns with this screen, most manufacturers are moving towards eye friendly screens.
Please do a gaming review and also check wheter it got 120fps on pubg or not pleaese love from pakistan ♥️🇵🇰
I picked this up yesterday, I gave the macro camera a quick try, it's pretty good.

Bro, I have the 1 V and although I love my device, I highly disagree.
What about Xperia 1 VI Premium 21:9 4k 120hz refresh rate for premium users!!!
Sony best and better samsung galaxy s24 ultra
Does the Xperia 1 VI still have dynamic vibration during movies / videos? Sony don’t even mention this on their website and always thought it was quite a cool and immersive feature.

I see Tower of Fantasy! I need gaming review of this phone. My xperia 1 is not ok with game like ToF and Genshin.
Adding an SD card is better than paying extra 100 dollars for 512 gb version.
OMG!! The lens blur is actually the lens itself not AI like other devices out there. i can tell!!!
Message me who ever wants to buy Sony Xperia 1 VI cheap brand new!
Why u sell it?
20:13 you can just tap once anywhere actually, not just the x2 time. You can tap on the x1 time and engage the slider.
Macro videos, pleace. Thankyou.
How is sound via the improved DAC?
Xperias have always had snapdragon integrated dac, so since it’s a switch from 8 gen 2 to 8 gen 3, I wouldn’t expect drastic changes.
I think I would like to see the following:
1. The headphone jack if it supports higher ohm for other higher quality headphones or earphones.
2. The Gaming Performance (i.e. Genshin after 30 min of gameplay).
3. The speakers
4. How good is the display under the sunlight and in the dark
Sony mobile to india form coming😊
Yep it has some cons, but amount of pros which outweigh heavily just stunning. Sony did a great job no doubt
Hearing you repeat the names of these phones, xD
Just call em Jim or Jon
Watching this on my Find x3 Pro and thinking seriously about upgrading to Xperia VI
Can the shutter sound turned off?
2x lossless zoom in VIDEO??? !noooo? Just with photo right???
Please do a video on setting its display to maximum manual brightness, look at how Sunlight vision perform, how legible can it go, and does this mode also apply to camera and video function, and how long does it take for the display to go dimmer, under hot sunny day (preferably measured temperature during that period). Then do another same test, now set display to auto brightness instead.
please compare display quality (xperia 1 vi & s24 ultra & xperia 1 v)

I’ve cancelled my pre-order on this. I cannot justify the £1300 on a 1080p display.
Thanks! Good news, it definitely does record 4K 120 with the tele and does have OIS. Basil
