Russian Ark - Official Trailer

- Alexander Sokurov’s spellbinding masterpiece #RussianArk is a multi-award winning film consisting of one unbroken camera shot that moves through St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum. It’s a staggering work of art, an impressive technical feat that is also cinematic poetry of the first order.
As Sokurov’s camera glides through 33 rooms of the Hermitage, moving in and out of cathedral-like galleries, opulent ballrooms and shadowy corridors and workrooms, three centuries of Russian history and European art are compressed into a single 96 minute shot.
In the dreamlike journey, an unseen modern filmmaker (voiced by Sokurov) is joined by a somewhat scornful French diplomat, the Marquis de Custine (Sergey Dreiden). We see the great paintings of El Greco, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Rubens and others in the Hermitage treasure trove, discussed by the Marquis and other aficionados. At the same time, as if in a nightmare, we keep getting glimpses of Russian history: Peter the Great manhandling a general; Russia’s last Czar, Nicholas II, dining with his family before the revolution or receiving emissaries from Persia; and Catherine the Great attending an opera and desperately running around in search of a restroom - or later wandering out into a snowy courtyard.
An extraordinary film, one that, like the museum itself, captures and shows three centuries of Russian culture and history in all its beauty, confusion, terror and majesty.

“We’ll take a break when this shot is done”
They must have rehearsed this A LOT before breaking out the camera!
1000 th like
@@inkheart151 There is a great (90 min) making-of of this movie. I think I have seen it on YT. The filming had to be done with a lot of time pressure. It was the last chance they could possibly shoot it. At they succeeded.
Try with Tarkovsky film Andrej Rubliov, 3 hours! One of my favorite film 😊
How did this not win an Oscar for best cinematography
@vann tedd Nonsense! I can't speak for the Academy, but I went to a perfectly normal American public school, where we spent several months studying Russian history, starting with the founding of Novgorod and ending with the Revolution. It was the antithesis of everything you assume about Westerners and Americans in particular being obsessed with the Cold War and nothing else.
@vann tedd Because the Oscars is a competitive field. It's a privilege to even snag a nomination alone.
@The Small Lebowski - "Parasite" isn't a Western film and it won 4 Oscars, including Best Picture.
@@AmandaFromWisconsin That's the first time in history something like that happened. And it's not even the first movie he made that's deserving of an oscar (over everything else in those years)
the oscars is america centered
Those pretty girls running thru a corridor seems like fairies!!!😍😍😍😍😍
@VegaAtLea Less i believe that depends on who's judging or watching
I agree !
Pedofails
That’s the point.
Cause they're ballet dancers....You can see it by the way the move, nobody else moves like this
The entire feature length narrative film is done in one Steadicam shot. That must have been exhausting for the operator.
AxemanTitan it was the film was dubbed cause all you heard was the cameramen cursing the director and they did two dress rehearsals
It's cool how they managed to stay in character in one single take, I would have ruined that movie with a nervous tic 🤣
The thing about being an actor means that you can improv too. So even if you do mess up, you sort of just spin it around and make it matter.
In italiano
All I'm imagining is someone sneezing near the end of the movie.
silencia08 I’m glad I’m not in it. I have hay fever.
There are numerous mistakes in the film, which in some places add to the charm. They closed the Museum for something like a week to do this, ran out of time, and had to do the entire third take come hell or high water. This movie is incredible. It's far better than most artsy films.
It took 5 attempts
John Petrov idk man. i love his movie "Father and Son" better
The original cut of the film had far worse than sneezing. The direction staff could be heard off camera cursing at each of the mistakes. The final film is actually mixed over with new sound to mask them all.
The girls in the that were running looked like nymphs or greek goddesses, am I the only one you thought of that?❤
No, the director of the film was thought of this too.
@@cianakril oh!! Thats so cool!❤
I always thought they were the princesses but no matter. This clip is used in some versions of the Russian national anthem on UA-cam.
One of the most amazing films I have ever seen. Amazing cinematography. Beautifully done.
I want to visit Russia. I would love to learn to speak Russian. Beautiful place, and beautiful people!
You're always welcome to our country! 🤗
Its not like in this video)))
I got to celebrate 55 in St Petersburg lively city enjoyed Moscow too
я тоже это хотел, я ещё не был в России но сейчас я учу русский язык и уже немного понимаю когда посмотрю русские видео здесь на ютубе хотя я ещё начинающий.
I also wanted that, I still haven't been to Russia but I'm learning the language and already understand a little bit when watching Russian videos here on youtube although I'm still a beginner.
have you got your ticket?
legend says the cameraman's arm still got spasm till this vr moment
I came across the movie by accident early one morning on tv. I was fortunate to catch it from the beginning. After watching for about five minutes I had become completely mesmerized. At the very end of the film during the exit I stood up in my den, by myself, and applauded. ‘Russian Ark’ is one of the most impressive films I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.
I saw it in the theater, mostly out of a lack of anything else to do, with zero idea of what is was about. Had a very similar reaction. For a film with no dialogue, it sure says a lot!
I watched this film 2 weeks ago and ive been constantly thinking about it since.
Me too!
I want to kind of watch this movie but I just can't seem to make up my mind...is it actually worth watching?
Anhelic101 Angel I thought so. The beauty of the museum alone makes it worth watching.
Same here. Like 10 years ago.
@@helli5057 not for everyone. It’s art, not entertainment.
Once you watch it, it will stay with you for the rest of your life. Truly a masterpiece.
This is an amazing film. Its not for everyone. I saw this when I was in college when I was working a night shift at a res-desk and was enthralled. I found it later and watched it with my mom. We both loved it.
Oh wow. I had the pleasure of spending a day at the Hermitage some 10 years ago and both the building and the artwork displayed are beyond compare. Gotta get my hands on that movie!
when you are too lazy to edit
edit 2024: Oh my God! I didn't even remember that I have wrote this comment 🤭 but just in case anyone was still wondering: YES, I was joking 😅
When you are bold enough to do something that still stands as a monumental filmmaking achievement.
Man, you know nothing about cinema
@@nadooor2007 guys, maybe she was just joking.
@@JustinZarian woosh
I'm no cinema whiz but a film with a single take needs extra effort than frame by frame take. Editing frame by frame take is no joke itself but a single take movie is beyond amazing. The details wow
Editor: So when do u want to cut?
Director: No

Beautiful piece of Russian history. ❤
русские настолько безумны,что фильм снятый одним кадром , они действительно сняли одним кадром
🤣🤣🤣
I love Russia. I love this film.
And Russia love vodka
Putin not so much
When you are so organised with your preparations and instructions to the cast and attendant operatives that know their timing, words, actions and love of the project to want to make it communally work a dream 'one take' is a swan floating along a glittering stream through a paradise garden. No editing is needed to this magnificent mesmeric dream.
Mustve been very stressful for a 1 long take
It took three tries.
they also had only two days in total at the Eremitage and needed most of that for decoration
Indeed. My Butt kept falling asleep and had to pee but I stuck out. I didn't want to miss out in case something happened! Thank You.
Imagine being the one person who causes the take to stop?! 🤪
It use to be on Netflix not anymore. Great film
Max Williams Great film? LMBAO. It was a interesting concept, but a great film? Umm...no.
the whole thing is on youtube
I’ve watched this a few years ago. And it is brilliant!!!!!
I hope the Criterion Collection picks this up one of these days. It’s a beautifully crafted film, and the fact it was all done in one take…needs more attention!
I saw this some years ago:
Very Well Made and Beautiful! 👍
There should be an award for film logistics. Imagine the queue for the line of port-a-loos alone!
Watch this a few years back, loved it. So beautifully done.
I've seen this. It is beyond compare. I have a big collection of over 200 movies. I might have it on DVD. Thanks.
This was a masterpiece.
One of the best movies in my opinion.
One of the Best movies ever filmed 💯
I saw this at the cinema - beautiful film.
Timecode was made with four single-shot takes (four points of view at once). And that was in 2000.
You misspelled "Timecop" and got everything else wrong too

russian innovation at its finest.
How did they do a whole movie in a single take?
Katy Katastrophe a helluva lot of planning.
Desire and talent.
Aldrin Iglésias that too.
Aldrin Iglésias If you decided to make a film that was filmed in one shot... would you do it.
Not pressing the stop button
I never believed I could be hypnotized. Then I watched _Russian Ark._
(Oh - and apparently time travel's a real thing, too!)
This is probable the best movie I have seen in the last 20 years.
Imagine if he wasn't rolling at the end
Excelente, muy excelente película, donde el único protagonista es la Historia de Rusia.
La recomiendo en este 2020 y para el futuro.
Now THIS is revolutionary cinema...
I’m sure the film editor had a fun time with this one.
Great to watch while you’re reading something like War and Peace.
The film's producer was very happy, as he had saved a ton of money on a film editor. 🙂
the most aesthetic film ive ever seen
Not the ark, but the Titanic. The orchestra still plays, but in the fireboxes of the boilers, which are not shown here, the sea water is supplied rather than coal.
This was mesmerizing.
Great Concept!!
It is actually based on a real story, however, there are many inaccurate points in the movie. I don't disagree though, that the movie is indeed wonderful. I love watching it, just keeping in mind that things were not exactly this way. The cinematography is the absolute best, though !!
Lovely movie.....it's like a magic trip in time and space
This is beyond impressive, god damn
1:43 careful, you don't wanna lean back and catch your wig on fire.
The music is lovely. I have to watch this.
Este filme é quase milagroso!!!!
Valery Gergiev....Yaaaaas !!!
bravo Russians ! is it on UA-cam ?
EXTRA: So how long is this take?
SOKUROV: 96 minutes... You're gonna say that's impossible, then I'm gonna give a speech about the blinding capabilities of Russian Ark's extras. And then you'll do the math in your head and say something like "The overtime alone will be a nightmare."
EXTRA: The overtime will be a nightmare.
SOKUROV: Get started. I'll find you the money.
Great work🍦
So I mean this in the best way possible . . . I visited The Hermitage and even though it was mindblowing, it was soooo dirty. I mean, visible, thick dust on everything. As if it hadn't been cleaned in decades. It even smelled bad. No doubt everything was cleaned up and down for this movie, and I'm happy to see it. The Hermitage is really a world treasure, glad to see it gleaming.
Is there anywhere online to stream the entire official movie?
TerraFormaStudio just put name in Russian Русский Ковчег on utube and see it
The logistics on this must have been a nightmare
takes you on a joutney you'll never forget.
Magistral movie!
Looks awesome.
¡Extraordinario!
Did they change the white balance of the picture. I remember it having more yellow lighting.
Masterpiece! I love Russia. Russians indigenous are Siberian race : Siberian-Inuit-Eskimos-Hymalayan people the true Nepali/Tibetans all together. All the Mongoloid Siberian race "The Aryans" same as the indigenous Turks Turkic of Central Asia and Northern India Aryan -Veydic, the same people Indigenous to South Asia Bornéo people whom are called Austronesian/Sunda people of Bornéo-Taiwan- Singapore-Laos Hainan Luzon Cambodia Vietnam The Dayaks-Hmong-Igorots, and the same people Indigenous first People of Madagascar. Again those same people are indigenous to some area of Scandinavia like Greenlandic. The same people indigenous to the Northern pôle and Alaska , the Indigenous of North America, Central America, Southern Americas and indigenous to the Carraïbes and Polynesia Tainos. Just to say It is beautiful to travel and learning so much, learning more. And it is incredible how this same people have travelled and became first settlers of almost half of the Globe. The native Russians are the same people as the natives of the Americas. Then all the European cames The Slavic and Bolshoi, The Russians from the South Siberia and St Petersburg are French and Italians of Gauls, Celtic origins. No surprise when Russia have all this culture of dolce Vita and luxury the French and Italians. Then the other Russians are from Northern Africa many Mauritanian-Armenian and probably Phoenicians. Russian people are like a melting pot yet getting there you don't see them being racist of feeling superior next to one another. They know exactly that the Siberian race are the natives, they see themselves together as Russians VS US America seems the natives are not considered Americans. In Russia they even intermarried each others with the Natives and with the North African-Russians. They celebrate the culture of the Natives (Siberian-Central Asians-Alaskan), the Eastern Europeans culture together with The Franco-italian culture and Northern Africans too probably. And it's really nice!! 😊 One thing I like with Russians is that they seems Europeans with the culture of the Aryans race (Siberian-Turkic-Native American-Austronesians) the culture of sharing and caring and hospitality literally meriment and celebration party and respect of your mother and father 😁🙌... The culture of sharing every piece of bread with your brothers and sisters and friends and strangers equally whatever you have or you are going to eat share. Another thing I love with Russians is that they are very funny and crazy but if they don't know you or they don't like you they will not smile at you haha and I love that they are not hypocrites. Russia is a very nice Beautiful country♥🌹🌹
The Birds ethnic Russians are slavic
it is a masterpiece but deserves a much better image quality. No Full HD or 4K resolution out yet? I thought modern upscalers could do this?
Wow, was this palace totally restored for this movie? And when one thinks russian one does think white. Would still love to see the movie tho. These period movies always seem romantic to me. The scenery, the clothes, the entire ambience just lends itself to romance.
Awesome
This sounds like a great drinking game. Take a shot of vodka every time they fuck up.
They did like 3 takes, and the last one is the one which became the movie.
Я не плачу, это всего лишь стекло

I loved this film so much I bought it... and when the war is done also a ticket to Russia. ❤
You don’t need to wait for anything. If you want, just go. It is possible and safe. I was in Russia for the first time in my life in May this year (Moscow. It was beautiful and I fall in love with Russia, with Moscow…Now, next week I am going to St. Petersburg. Wish you all the best 💕
Love the diversity

Please, what is the name of Waltz Music ?
The first film ever created in a single take is Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope"!
I didn't watch russian ark, so I can't tell for sure, but, maybe they are thinking about a film created in a single take with no stop during all shooting. Rope pretends to be in a single shot but they actually had to stop a few times during shooting, for changing the reel, I think.
@@fernandomiller884 Hitchcock created the illusion of the single shot effect by discreetly hiding the cuts. Sokurov filmed the entire 90 minutes of Russian Ark in one take using a video steady-cam.

Nowadays America is better than Russia
@@huntrrams That only proves everything can change as the time goes by.
96 minutes in one unbroken shot while filming in a Russian museum? Dude, that's St. Petersburg Russia! I don't need a movie that feels like standing in a long line at a shopping mall every Christmas! I live that film! I live it in St Petersburg Florida!!! No offense to the former Soviet Union, but it sounds like a snoozefest.
