  • Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a type of nerve pain that occurs as a complication of shingles. Shingle is a viral infection caused by the herpes zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. After the shingles rash has cleared, some individuals can continue to experience pain in the affected area, known as PHN. The pain is caused by damage to the nerve fibers and is often described as burning, sharp, or stabbing.
Non-surgical treatments for PHN often involve a multi-disciplinary approach that combines different treatments and therapies. One of the most common non-surgical treatments for PHN is the use of medication.
In addition, topical treatments, such as lidocaine patches, can also be effective in reducing PHN pain. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that works by numbing the affected area and reducing the transmission of pain signals to the brain. Lidocaine patches are applied directly to the skin and provide a continuous release of the medication.
Physical therapy, nerve stimulation, and counseling may also be recommended as part of a multi-disciplinary approach to treating PHN. Physical therapy can help improve mobility and reduce pain, while nerve stimulation can help modulate the pain signals being transmitted to the brain. Counseling can also help individuals manage the emotional and psychological impact of PHN.
It's important to consult a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and to determine the best treatment options for your specific case. In some cases, a combination of different treatments may be needed to effectively manage PHN pain.

Hello, my mum suffered from this and now after the healing of the shingles it has affected her nerves on both hands, face and general body weakness. She has taken nerve medications such as pregabalin, gabapentin etc with no relief while the condition continues to affect her more and more areas.

Me too. Three years. I lost everything. Some people didn't/don't believe me. I tried so many medications and no one had any idea what to do about it. They still don't. I'm sorry for your mother. I know what she is going through.
