Holy shit. I don't think non-bass players know this, but the first 50 seconds are the hardest part of the song, IMO. Those super fast, steady 16th notes (32nd notes?) are BRUTAL. Seriously impressive.

Yes i thought she was gunna pass out
Same here. I sorta-kinda learned the syncopated stuff, but my 16ths sound like crap.
Yes. The continuous 16th notes. Tiresome huh?
I struggled for a long time trying to get that 16th note run right till I realised I could tweak my EQ a little bit and double thumb it. It sounds as good. Haters will say this is cheating but till it sounds right does it matter?

Agreed! I want one mighty bad. I’m turning my US Sterling HS into a kinda-sorta Dart bass, only with a series/parallel switch and a passive tone control, but I’ll wish I had that dead-sexy flamed neck. She deserves it more than I, I’m glad she found one!
Cheers, could you tell me the name of the bass. Regards, flo
Flo0W1 It’s the Ernie Ball Music Man Joe Dart signature bass. Based on the US-made Sterling bass model.
@@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney being a lefty I haven't a hope of ever owning one unless I get it custom ordered.
Nikolaki A Oh, bummer! Well, I believe that a natural/maple Sterling would get you close (I have a sunburst/maple), just bypass the preamp. Actually, running the preamp is enough, cut some from each band aside from the low-mid. It’s a booty-shaker.
It it is frightening how she is sitting there, joe dart sig in hand playing dean town as if it was nothing and she hasn't even reached her final form yet...

Yes, clearly. Well done Julia!
@@ColonelPickleswitch Okay, thank you!
I am a bassist, session musician and an educator and I've graduated with a degree in upright bass from Berklee. I do play electric too, actually just recently got a nice 6-stringer. But Jazz is where I mostly do work.
Happy bass playing to all of ya'll! Remember to practice. : )
This is what?
What impresses (and reminds me of how inadequate a bass player I am!) is how she isn’t just about stringing together a performance like this for a single UA-cam upload. She can do this all day. 😭😭👍
Keep pluggin' away at it!
Bass is hard, but it's really satisfying to practice sometimes.
I bought a bass just 15 days ago after thinking of it for years. Meanwhile i was waiting for it to arrive, i discover both Vulfpeck and Julia, and i wonder why didnt she cover dean town yet. Was thinking the same thing soon as i saw the thumbnail pop up. Yesssss!
Yesss I have wanted to see her play this song ever since I found her channel!
Yeah Dean Town is the new Teen Town for the old school bassists out there.
@@SirBoopBoop Teen town has got to be a bit more difficult surely. I've had a go at dean town but have no idea where to start with teen town lol
@@samhardingham5591 Without question Teen Town is more difficult. Dean Town is hard because it's a test of dexterity with those long phrases of 16th note plucks that'll wear you out quickly if your chops aren't there yet while Teen Town is a test of precision and string skipping... And dexterity... And rhythmic placement... And groove... And tonality... And pocket playing.. And.....
The beginning part sounds easy but is extremely hard to keep up that speed for that length of time. She's great and must put in a lot of time and dedication to get that good.
I always skip the beginning part, i’m too damn tired to play the rest of the song.
It takes a lot of stamina to gallop that quick and consistently. Julia did cover Hysteria as her first video. It took me 6 months to nail that riff.
@@jamesrudland183 Weirdly enough, I found Hysteria relatively easier than something like New Born (also by Muse), which I found impossible to play because the bass line was never-ending, or something like Butterflies and Hurricanes which is just high speed galloping for a very long time.
@@johnmartinez7440 try covering something by Justin Chancellor, the signatures and tempo changes in most of the Tool catalogue leaves me zoning out sometimes, especially Schism, I believe there are about 42 meter changes.
Extra points for using the joe dart bass, while playing a joe dart groove.
It's actually a Woody Goss groove since he wrote it lol
Dart, you‘re done...
To be completely correct, that's Julia on a Joe Dart bass playing a Joe Dart on the Fender Bass groove, since that is Joe Dart on the Fender Bass' legal name.
It says a lot about how great she is that I can be disapointed when she DOESN'T change one of my favorite basslines. Great playing as always!
I assume that like 90% of the people viewing this comment know how goddamn hard it is to play sixteenths this clean for this long, to say nothing of the lyrical passages
Well, I didn’t know until I attempted to learn this. My fingers slow down like they’re cramping. I’ll learn this even if it takes me a year.
And it's not just endurance, it's the precise, fine motor control you need to keep the precise timing like that. One slight imperfection in a pluck and it'll be glaringly obvious.
Part of the 10% here, but now that you say it that makes perfect sense. I couldn’t even tap my fingers that fast for that long.... certainly not with any force or consistent pattern. Cheers!
Calm down.

Absolutely nailed it but man. I dunno what my deal is. No matter what I hear from Vulf played on the new music man I just hate the way it sounds with every part of my ears. The slight timing and timbre consistency issues in the intro 16th note part is the most she's ever struggle on camera, which just shows she's human like the rest of us.
I've sing along when I watch this, I memorized the lyrics. Watch Vulfpecks live performance of this song at Madison square garden and the crowd "singing" along. Not often you see a crowd singing the bass line.
