Hey Elliot, i think you might want to put the SD Card reader on the front, where the floppy drive was, so it keeps that spirit of popping a floppy in and load a program. Besides that, I think it's a pretty cool project and I hope you can get to work on it again

@@TheLeggedOne I thought of that, but it would make you need another one to write floppys, not even taking in consideration the fact that the reading/writing speeds would be terrible and the fact that it's still about 720 Kilobytes (i think it was that). What could be done tho, is making a 3D printed case for the external drive to make it look like an external drive from Apple at the time and have it plugged in a usb port put at the rear where the parallel port was. Edit: i also don't know if there's any compatibility at all between Raspbian and the usb drive
@@TheLeggedOne that would be pretty neat, even if you would need to plan out what you would actually want on the Floppies given they are so much smaller than modern storage, unless of course your using ligit old floppies with the actual software on them for a emulated version of the intended OS
That yellow lightning bolt at the top right corner around 4:30 means the Pi is not getting the necessary power to work at full speed. Consider getting a better power supply for it. Very cool project! Please give it the chance it deserves!

Yes, please finish it! It looks gorgeous, man! The curved plexi sounds also pretty interesting, I've not seen something like that before and would love to see what the effect looks like. Moreover, how nice would it be emulating a Mac emulating a Gameboy on this thing? Really hope you can make some progress on this some day.
I have the exact same idea with a broken iMac G3 i own! The analog board is making scary popping sounds and the crt is dull as it can be, it whas an old school iMac so yeah, the thing is just worn out to bits! But i really love this iMac, and my plan is to gut the machine, install a modern lcd monitor in it, i have this small acer laptop motherboard which has everything on board, you can plug in ssd's, sd cards, it has bluetooth and wifi, hdmi and usb 3.1, i want this to become a linux mac, or a hackintosh for that mather, i just need the parts to make it all work, now this motherboard is build into a wifi modem, which people think is cool, but the ultimate project would be this iMac G3 project offcourse! I think you have to finish it, the idea is so cool, and you got all the essential parts ready to go, so you have to finish it man, it would look so cool! Action Retro made the smallest PowerMac G3 setup in the world, he also used a raspberry pi, and the thing acted like a real mac, including the bong sound, it would act and boot like a real mac, so i think you could do something like that, and than "emulate" the real linux environment, i think he uploaded the sd card image to archive.org to make it happen, it will boot into macos 9 directly, but you can jump into linux offcourse to do 'real' work :p have fun making your project!
Dont worry, I literally have a labelled drawer of shame where some projects go to die. Once in a blue moon I pull one out and actually finish it tho so it's not an inescapable purgatory ... I have a separate drawer for those unfortunate projects :-(
I built one of these! A Pi 3B+ with Retro Pi/Emulation Station, an 8.4" 4:3 lcd screen plus driver from China; extended USB (front & rear), Ethernet, HDMI, Audio, etc. to the back ports of the Mac. A HDMI splitter to send display to both in-built screen and HDMI port on the back. Two power supplies inside, one for screen, second for Pi, both connected to a single kettle power in the original Mac hole with original style rocker power switch to turn it on/off. Even have a power LED on the front :-) Pair of Bluetooth PS3 controllers completes the set up. So, do it! Complete the build.
This is such a rad idea! Definitely worth finishing. Getting the curved acrylic is an extra step of genius. For the sake of preserving the original Mac experience (I think something like this would be more feasible in a technology museum setting, rather than original irreplaceable hardware), having a stealth computer that wouldn't get stolen, a cool media hub or mini server etc. I used a few Mac's below this one first back in the 90s, but this was the first one were computers really started to click with me.
I've wanted to do this mod for so long but can't bring myself to butcher a working mac or find the right broken one! I'd be great to see it progress, it looks so good. One thing you could also do is get an original Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) keyboard working over USB with a simple converter using an Arduino Pro Micro
Retro Mac projects are my favourite. There's something classic about pre-iMac Apple designs. I like that the case itself is unmodified. What about replacing the Pi with a Mini-ITX or some kind of nano PC? You could then easily run full-speed Basilisk II and basically have an original SE/30 experience that wouldn't scare away someone who time travelled from 1989.
you can use a piece of light filter gel sheet to make a cover for the screen, stick some double sided tape around the inner edge of the Macintosh display and stick the gel sheet to it, it will follow the curve of the crt but would dim it, I'm doing it right now with an apple //c monitor
If it's any consolation, it took about 3 years for me to finish my McTable touch screen computer. So I say go for it even if it's been on the shelf for a bit!

Nice mod!! There's an adapter out there called Drakware ADB USB that would let you use the old Mac keyboard and mouse with the Pi. Might really complete the vibe!

This project sounds abosutely amazing. I think you should continue it if you can cause it sounds you put a lot into it. It is unfortunate that other things did get in the way of it.
i really like this project. its similar to something ive had in mind for a few years. id like to see how it works with the "crt" lens and how you can center the display into it.

OK got some thoughts. I saw a thread on the Raspberry Pi forums and it seems you can actually run a USB floppy drive. There is also the Basilisk emulator if you want to emulate later 68k MacOS up to 8.1 with real system software. You can use the built in overscan on the raspberry pi to give it black borders around the screen. It might also be worth playing around with the raspberry pi so that it will boot straight in to mini vmac or basilisk.

Also it looks like one of those arcade type games that you would find at a bar so another idea is to get an arcade style fight stick or 2 and have a mini desktop arcade emulation machine that can also do other systems as well like snes or ps1
The suggestion I'd make is to make (3d print, particle board and glue, however) a cover for the slot in back and route your USB cables to it. The power strip inside could be good, especially a tiny one. Only really needs your monitor power and a USB cable. But likewise, you could always use the front drive slot for an SD card port instead. Looks great. I've really been wanting to make a modern classic PC, myself. Probably not an integrated style like that Apple, though. Just modern guts in an old beige, 20 lb, steel case. Lol. Also, do I spy a Rolex? Between that and the awesome flat, you're clearly doing pretty well!
Ok, so someone else has mentioned it, check out action retro’s videos on how to get the Rpi emulator going for the Mac, what you could also do is theme the Linux setup so that it resembles MacOS X or even MacOS 9, Linux is extremely flexible so that’s easy to do. As for the case, you can get little surface mount USB extender plugs that are designed for things like furniture or wall mounting, and basically ‘transfer’ the USB ports from the Pi to the back of the case, therefore reducing the times you’d need to uncase the unit. If you wanted to get tricky you could even chuck a couple ‘hidden’ USB connectors in under the little offset ridge on the front of the case for things like controllers. You can get USB power leads with switches on them, if you mounted that kind of thing onto the back of the case you can easily make an easy on/off switch for the unit. Screen screw mounts can be 3D printed and attached with epoxy to the inside of the case so that you can mount the panel using the existing screw holes or you could make little half circle ‘clamps’ that screw in and rotate in and hold the screen up and in place. Stuff to use it for once it’s done? My absolute first recommendation would be ScummVM, playing some of the old LucasArts games, or Emulators, plenty of stable ones on Linux. Use the Mac emulators, play some glider pro, (macintosh garden has an enormous library, and with a couple different emulators you can emulate up to OS9 and play some awesome games from back then) As for adding a couple card readers? People have suggested just slipping one in the floppy drive, or you have a good cutout for a surface mount card reader on back. One of the neater things you could use it for is a jukebox, get a quality speaker and fit it in the case with everything secure, hook it to the raspberry pi and run a music playing program on it like Amarok (which looks awesome) to choose music, or chuck some audio jacks on the back and run them to the Pi for external speakers.

Also i can imagine a setup where it looks like a futuristic "cyberpunk"-ish desk setup, and maybe you can somehow incorporate the gpi case 2, and when you dock the gpi case it smoothly transitions to the bigger screen (like imagine that in the far future where theres no internet anymore and people are forced to get back to retro gaming, that kind of setup), well its just an idea from my part, i would be satisfied if you would just make it a functional day to day device, maybe a portable one? it could definitely be portable :D
You could use the original board for the ports at the back for looks also it would be cool to somehow connect the original CD drive to the Raspberry pi as a working drive :)
For this, you could take inspiration from the mini Power Mac project that 'Action Retro' created a while back (but instead using Mini vMac set up to emulate a SE/30), as well as from various 'DIY Dr K' projects as I know he had done some Raspberry Pi stuff before.
The Pi 3 (and 4) is really sensitive about how much power it gets. If you can get the official wall wart for it, I'd go with that. I think I remember reading that it goes beyond the usual 2.4 amps that USB power supplies top out at and delivers 2.5 amps.
Planned something similar with an old Toshiba 115cs laptop with a Pi 4, figured out it was quite possible but couldn't find a 4:3 aspect ratio display that fit the bill and decided it was too difficult for someone with only a little knowledge on the subject, would still like to do it one day.

Cool concept! I think this would be right up Ctrl-Alt-Rees' street.
I can imagine an artificial CRT being rigged up to a TheC64 "maxi".

For this, you could take inspiration from the mini Power Mac project that 'Action Retro' created a while back (but instead using Mini vMac set up to emulate a SE/30), as well as from various 'DIY Dr K' projects as I know he had done some Raspberry Pi stuff before.
This just reminds me I need to finish my macintosh project, I've a 512k case with an intel i5 9600k in the works. Probably a little over kill.
The Pi 3 (and 4) is really sensitive about how much power it gets. If you can get the official wall wart for it, I'd go with that. I think I remember reading that it goes beyond the usual 2.4 amps that USB power supplies top out at and delivers 2.5 amps.

Planned something similar with an old Toshiba 115cs laptop with a Pi 4, figured out it was quite possible but couldn't find a 4:3 aspect ratio display that fit the bill and decided it was too difficult for someone with only a little knowledge on the subject, would still like to do it one day.
