Michael Jordan - 44 points vs New York Knicks (Jan 9, 1998)

- It was the way Michael Jordan kept hitting his shots as the Knicks kept hitting flesh. And it was obvious that no matter what the circumstances, the color of this rivalry had not faded without Patrick Ewing.
The evidence spilled onto the floor at Madison Square Garden last night as each Knick who was fed up with the prickly Dennis Rodman shoved, tripped or barked at him. Pick one, Larry Johnson, John Starks or Charles Oakley.
The trio displayed the kind of anger and aggression that provided the only chance the Knicks had to beat Jordan. And yet, just as Jordan has done throughout his career, he ruined the best group effort by the Knicks, gathering a remarkable 44 points as the Bulls won, 90-89.
"I thought we had tremendous effort," Knicks Coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We were beaten by a championship-caliber team, by the greatest player ever probably. We had our opportunities."
The victory was not assured until Chris Childs missed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer as the Knicks declined to call a timeout to set up a final play.
"I would have gone inside, but I didn't think I would have gotten the call," Childs said. "I thought the shot I took was good. It just didn't go in this time."
Suddenly, the additions the Knicks have made to surround Ewing with complementary players were on the spot against Chicago last night. More attention was on Houston, though. He had Jordan, but Jordan got the best of him in the second half.
"I don't think I got the job done in the second half," Houston, who had six turnovers, said. "We just didn't get it done. I don't look back and say it was because we have had injuries and that type of thing."
The Bulls had to deal with injuries, too. Scottie Pippen has been out, and Toni Kukoc did not play because of a chest cold.
"We were limited with what we had our there in our arsenal," Bulls Coach Phil Jackson said. '"But we got it done."
The Knicks did not. And that was the bottom line to most of them. Few took solace in playing the Bulls close, but they did believe the team proved something to those who thought this rivalry had lost much of its edge without Ewing.
"We have a lot of talent, still," Oakley said. "People are going to say what they're going to say. As long as we know in-house what we have and keep working, we'll be in a lot of close games."
Maybe they will even win a few, but not this one, not while Jordan had anything to do with it.
"The Knicks came out and played with a lot of dignity," Jordan said. "We were not healthy, either. So we expected a battle."
SERIOUSLY man...35 years old...above and beyond the rest of the league...
Yeah, the Bulls had a lot of injuries in the '97-'98 season, particularlly Pip who missed nearly 3 months, yet the Bulls still won 62 games that year and tied Utah with the best record in the league. It just goes to show you how good that Bulls squad was and how great MJ was, he's the GOAT indeed.
@3:50, They say Jordan had the kind of calls Durant, Kobe and Lebron have. Just look at that play, even Rodman cannot believe it and remember Jordan is in foul trouble against houston. The bulls didn't have Pippen, their second leading scorer and they didn't have Kukoc, their scorer from the bench. Yet, the refs put Jordan in to foul trouble and doesn't respect him when he attacks the basket and sacrifice his body at 35 years old. And Jordan doesn't even complain. Now at 4:10, only few seconds later, they give another foul to Jordan. And some of those kids, new nba fans say Jordan had the kind of calls those superstars today have.@4:55, look at how he dives on the floor at age 35 for a regular season game. @ 6:02, if Lebron passes the ball like that on this play, they will say he's a better passer than Magic Johnson. I don't even have to comment on the points he scored and the difficult shots he makes...making them look so easy. In today's nba, he would have had 45 replays in every angle possible on some of those moves to admire their degree of difficulties.
+Air Magic very true. games today are just way too commercial
That shot he made at 5:17 is what sets him apart from the rest. Simply the best to ever play the game of basketball. He made some incredible shots in this game.
Kobe made those kind of shots, too.
@@travisblair3189Kobe is inefficient and not comparable to Jordan. I am telling you this as a Lebron James fan. Kobe is not on the level of these legends
@@legacytv2453 I have no time for ingorance. Class cancelled.
No Pip (for most of the season), No Kukoc. 44pts (51% FG shooting)..carried his team, total control, attack from all over the court. GOAT..nuff said.
My goodness Mike is on fire Swish Swish Swish!!!
No one ever made reads on offense as quickly as Jordan imo. Maybe Bird, but that's it. Look at 8:56 how he cuts towards the basket, comes back out, getting Houston's momentum coming away from the basket, and then immediately goes baseline again to use Houston's momentum against him, because he saw there was an opening there that he could get to before the defense reacted. Brilliant.
I like how MJ showed sportsmanship and class helping Wards to get up from the floor at 1:07. We don't see that nowadays and the Bulls and Knicks were rivals. Those were the good old days when there was honour.
5:15... Hubie Brown: "Oh wow..." 'nuff said.
Fuck this guy is good, hard shots after hard shots! Hands down the best mid-range ever. The 80's MJ and first 3peat is just superman can't be copy.
the announcer said it perfectly. "totally under control" no one else made it looks so easy
I don't know about that, man. I'm not trying to denigrate the new breed. Like I say, there are some talented players now. I give LeBron his due as the best in the world now, but I grew up on MJ, Hakeem, Barkley, Ewing, and all those great players so......I'm 28 and i don't keep up with the product as much as I used to do. I still keep track of the playoffs and finals, etc. But the game today doesn't seem as good to me as it once was.
Oh I miss the the old TNT presentation and the music especially.
Just in case anyone wonders about this vid - I was never happy with my first edit. Back then you had a 100 MB size limit and no HQ option, so the guiding principle was to keep the edits as short as possible, also noticeable in my Bulls-Cavs series from 1993.
I won't delete my first edit though, after all there might be guys who prefer a shorter version of this game.
Its a shame how the younger generation dont know nothing bout Mj, and dare to say Lebron James is better, no1 in history will b great like this man, effortlessly kills the competition, smooth, athletic, and made hall of famers look like rookies, lol
Gtfo ofcourse lebron is better
dave jahoer lol, youngsters
dave jahoer lol
He was well out of his prime right here Lol. Still dominating the opposition.
@@TheStatisfiedOneLeRoid couldn’t top #Mike if he played 40 yrs!
I wish todays nba was this fun to watch. Todays nba is filled with egos rather then superstars
Wow! Michael was so quick !!!
From 4:55 to 5:03 was amazing hustle. But I got to say if that was to happen in modern day NBA fouls and penalties as well as flagrant calls would be whistled all over the place. Shit over there is changing man.
I remember this game like yesterday. Michael scoring 44pts was nothing surprising, but the Knicks playing well without Patrick Ewing is what surprised me. Chicago barely won that night.
omfg i remember this game!! last game before Pippen came back from his injury!!!!
And still they gave the MVP to Karl Malone. But it was so sweet to see Michael dismantle the Jazz in the finals and embarrass whoever voted agaisnt him for the MVP trophy. That is priceless!
Buck Williams still playing in 1998, wow ... This guy debuted in 81 played against Doctor J, Larry Bird and through the Jordan Era ... Men played in the 1980s and 1990s
Both teams controlled the spread perfectly. Their winning margins were always 1-5
Wu Liwei it was the perfect rivalry for the bookies
Good video. Thanks for posting it.
always a joy to watch him play
This guy is absolutely unreal. The perfect basketball player!
even though he didn't make the shot at 2:23 it was stick sick!!
That ring 7 would have been so sweet ❤
O melhor de todos os tempos Jordan genio.
How can you watch this and not see the goat?
Cadaver hoarder of perimeter defenders. Like a true GOAT taking over in 4th quarter.
i love that picture of Rodman at 0:17 mark
man, his shot is damn.... i think the net will just explode any minute... LOL
Back in those days a huge chunk of those going to MSG, were doing it to watch Michael, not the Knicks!
scoring over 40 with injured finger and just 10 FTA against a good defensive team, you can hardly see that today in the NBA.
NBA 80s through 90s the Golden era of basketball.
I miss the days seeing the Detroit Pistons whipping on Jordan and the Bulls. Those were some heated battles. As a Pistons fan, it did really disappoint me how Isiah Thomas and the rest of the Pistons just walked off the court when the bulls finally defeated them in a playoff series. It lacked class.
fantastic game for michael
I'm sorry but I've been arguing with some idiots lately who are stuck in a time machine and think that Oscar Robertson was better then Michael Jordan. I know that the films on Oscar are limited but just watch the ones that are available of him in his prime and then compare what you see to an older MJ. It's not even close! The skills and athleticism that Michael Jordan possessed DWARFED what "The Big O" had to offer. There's a thing called learning from your forefathers, modern medicine, evolved work out regiments and advanced technology that gives your modern players quite an advantage. Anyone who doesn't recognize that is stupid.
Oscar Robertson is overrated
You forgot the rules in that era.. -_-
actually anyone who thinks that MJ is not the GOAT is neurologically deficient.
MJ is better but these generalizations of better nutrition and such is hilarious. We were a modern nation in the 80's and 90's. There's a difference between the 90's and the 50's in terms of such things. If you think that today's athletes at least in the NBA, are demonstrably better because of nutrition or modern twining methods, you're general understanding of things is inaccurate.
my favorite Knick team.. with LJ, Houston, Childs, Charlie Ward and Starks!
2:25 pure greatness even though he missed the shot
Lol! I was just saying this! That was very quick. I tried doing it. But countering your momentum the opposite way has a lag. But he does it fast.
35 yrs old MJ was still quick.
Theses was the days
MJ killed the Knicks at MSG that season, he also had 42 pts there in the same seaon in the Bulls alternate road black uniforms.
He made some circus shots in that 42 point game. The best ever MJ
I remember watching this game...shit, felt like yesterday, how time fly's =/
why was chris Childs taking the last shot? ??? Jeez.
Scottie missed the first half of the season in 97/98.
His finger on his shooting hand was dislocated for that whole season.
no one is better than jordan in his prime
Yeah, it was the game where MJ rocked the Air Jordan 1's. Classic, man i miss those days, haha.
I think it's the game-winning shot Jordan hit on them in 1987. It's on all his highlight videos. He takes it full court against Gerald Wilkins, gets Wilkins on his hip, and then shoots it over 2-3 defenders from about 21 feet out on the left wing to win the game. The game is up on youtube, but I forget the date.
81 pts is great, but in the context of things it really isn't that significant. Raptors were probably the worst defensive team in the league and also had numerous injuries. The specific coaching instructions in the game also was to let Kobe get his and focus defensively on his teammates. Then there's the lax defensive rules today as well. 81 is amazing but not mind boggling when put in perspective.
I Love M.J. but he even said Kobe is the only player that can be compared to Him.And His game reminds him of himself.
pippen was out for the majority of the 97-98 season. i believe he returned in feb.
2:24 though he missed. But that was quick! I tried doing it but it's like a lag countering your momentum the opposite way.
@8:20, a classic Jordan "foul" in the "tough hand check era".
Emmanuel Enyinwa - it was a tougher era period - rules to curtail defense were instituted to promote easier scoring as stated by the NBA - facts.
And while MJ did get some favorable calls, it by no means was a lot as you suggest. All star players get some calls, just ask LBJ.
It was a good shooting night and a pretty efficient scoring night overall for him. Not as good as his usual 40+ point games, but as good on a FG% and points-per-shot basis as most players in the league today.
What Hubbie Brown says at 3:13 basically sums up Kobe's career and why Kobe never figured out how to dominate games but rather he ended up just another great shooter to pass through the league. When it's all said and done, Curry will be remembered over Kobe. Guys who settle for Js come a dime a dozen, while Jedi of the court dominate, like Magic, MJ, Kareem, Olajuwon etc. did.
The shake at 2:24 even though a miss still looks more impressive than the best basket made of Kobe/ LBJ/ Durant's careers put together. I mean, you just don't see someone lose a defender like that; and a solid defender too.
I would also like to point out that the reason most of these "superstars" are having the numbers they are getting is mostly due to those lax defensive rules primarily. But, whatever the game has changed drastically and the reason why is that the wing players couldn't get these numbers they're getting now if they hadn't changed the defensive rules to favor them. It is clearly an indication of their inferior ability.
fascistdroog85 suffice to say, MJ would be more unstoppable in today's game. I mean he averaging 30+ with players grabbing and holding him
It’s not just that he scores 44, it’s also almost half of his team’s points…
How is it not mind boggling? When Wilt got the 100 points, people were like "Woah! A hundred points." Now, it's the second highest points made in a single game. Now tell me how it is not mind boggling?
He was almost 35 years old at the time. Jordan was born on February 17, 1963.
although i am Michael Jordan to the core but my favorite knick team is chris childs, larry johnson, latrell spreewell, allen houston, marcus camby and patrick ewing on the bench. that was the best team, chemistry wise. because of that, they went the finals. but MJ will never be topped
@BENKATOK this is 98, paxson hadnt been with the bulls for 4 years at this point
No Pippen??
I miss bulls vs Knicks real NBA
This was a wimpier Knicks team when compared to previous years when they had Starks and Mase!!!!
where's Pippen? they talk about Kukoc being injured, but what about Scottie?
He basically delayed his surgery that he was supposed to have after the Finals (the year before) because he found out that the Bulls were looking to deal him for Tracy McGrady.
@jeanrollan what do u mean duh all they do is show jordans highlights in this game
No complaining to the refs every call, no flopping, no political statements, just BALL the game was so much prettier back then, today’s league is more street ball
@2wdj6 wutlol? am i missing something?
@stevechen1991 dont forgot they did not even had any nike pro combats and shit like tht, they drew contact with their bare body and thts fucking man!
It wasn't my intention to sound like a smartass, lol. Motivated players with fundamentals and the right work ethic can play at that level for a long time. Jordan did not miss a single game when he came back to the Bulls, and Karl Malone, for example, was an iron man as well. Tim Duncan can play at that current level at least 2-3 more years, whereas guys like Stoudemire or Howard will fade at Duncan's age.
wow your prediction was correct
I remember watching this game as a kid and being so mad. The Knicks were without Ewing most of that season and battled hard all game long. I thought they were about to pull it off against the defending champs. They had a timeout and didn't take it, instead Childs dribbled down the court took that dumb shot when Houston was open on the other side. argh.
Listen to the crowd reaction when Jordan shakes Starks out of his shoes at 2:26-2:27 lol. Classic. Thanks for the re-up, k0r0ne.
Jordan sick!
So you are trying to say is different now? 5 years ago? It's the same every year, just look it up. In fact, there are more stars from 1996 than from any other year after that.
plus he turned away from the coming help defender. you'd see there oakley nearly slip.
81 points is a horrible achievement? So you're saying Wilt's 100 points is also a horrible achievement because no one could stop him that game? Get real.
Hubie Brown is just oohing and ahhing over MJ
Well at that point in time many teams especially in the east were struggling. Chicago had the luxury of Boston and Detroit having some injury woes and were able to capitalize on getting the top spot. I didn't mean that these past teams supremely competed every time, but these teams now have the benefit of lax defensive rules and weaker competition. The past era was watered down especially after they added expansion teams but i still don't agree that competition is stronger now. no way.
That dislocated finger definitley didn't hold MJ back! Especially on June 14th of that year ;)
so true
Every basket frm mj its like highlights.. 😮😅
Three 40 plus games against NY that season. Holy shit.
@uberathlete Lool im sure any player in NBA history played against terrible teams and they never scored 81 except for Wilt...But MJ is the greatest of All-Time but give Kobe his props damn
6:31 "Im sorry Dick that was my Butt" ahaha wtf anyone else hear that?
I think Allan regret childs not passed the ball to him.
Obviously the team that Wilt was playing against also had one of the worst defense in the league that time.
@Famous1MB
He was ONLY talkin' about in terms of work ethic...read the article
Last few years or so, with a losing record so whether that make the playoffs or not is not indicative of the competition being better now. Look at all the 8 teams that make it and see what their records were. There may be a few on there with majority winning record. I'm not saying there aren't any talented players, there just aren't as many as there were then. The majority of the players today sufficiently lack the fundamentals and the high basketball iq of the past players.
@bladerunner9405 they still had starks just no mase though
wtf i just notice pippen was injured during his game
@lilzack24 It's impressive for sure. But again, everything in perspective. Think about it ... apart from what I previously said, the current rules also give perimeters players an unfair advantage, something the NBA intended. You literally cannot touch anyone on the perimeter, and the paint opens up regularly. I know how bad the Raptors were because I actually watched them that season.
0:12 "I want that purple stuff..."
17/33 = 51,5%
Jordan had better 40+ games, but I think shooting over 50 percent against a good defensive team isn't too shabby.
@uberathlete no 50 points is great 81 is out of this world. Most of his points were well contested. It doesn't matter if team was weak, you gotta look at the shoots he was making. Those were hard shots. Only Kobe and Jordan are able to accomplish that ( Jordan i think never had a chance nor did he wanted to but it was in his grasp). If its so easy how nobody since wilt chamberlain in like 60's didn't do it ? There were weaker teams than those toronto raptors.
I FUCKIN LOVE YOUR COMMENT!!! LONG LIVE CHAPPELLE!
Kobe will pass Jordan in scoring unless he retires of injury. He only needs 5900 points. Kobe still has a chance to get 6 rings or more. If he gets 7 rings Kobe will brag about himself forever.
false, roland lazenby...a sports writer said that jordan told him that among all the so called "next michael jordan",kobe is the only one who deserves a comparison given the achievements...that's a different statement from what you said.
