Been armlocking for 1 year and it took time to dial it in. These are the 3 main things: 1- Putter length to match your height and preferred posture. I tried both 40” and 42” and longer was better for me. I’m 5-10 and like to be more upright at address. 2- Ball position. I found much more consistency and results with the ball on the back foot. Playing off the front sometimes exceeded my natural free swing motion and led to muscling or yips. 3- Putter grip. Went to the Bryson special JumboMax 17 and that solved every issue. Also takes more strain off the contorted left wrist. Cheers. Good video as always!
Honestly. After using a club like this, I live them. For me, all it does is remind me to keep my arm straight and elbow facing my target. Since you hands stay connected, there isn't any point where your hands are experiencing movement in different directions, or between a point. Technically, this breaks no rules.
Rick-the confidence you had with the arm lock was noticeable. I would say keep it around for a while and see how it works. Thanks for another great vid!
I feel like the armlock biggest benefit is the short putt to make sure you strike it straight as possible where slight angles on such low ball speeds can alter the bounce/path of the ball. Long putts matter more on the read and appropriate force exerted, making sure you get it close enough to two-putt. Think it’s better to test how squared and how much deviation on swing path on armlock vs traditional putters create on average.
Great video Rick. Recently broke out my old belly putter and have been playing around with using it as an armlock and I agree with the discomfort in the wrist.

Hi Rick; I noticed when putting, it seemed that the putter actually swung in a vertical arc rather than low to the ground & actually hit the ball on an upswing. Does it not make the ball roll off the face rather than skid before it rolls with the low to the ground stroke? Which do you teach?

Rick, I've used arm lock for years and use the Arm Lock Golf grips that turn belly putters into armlock putters. What I found in using those grips is that you have to change your left hand position on it. You can't really keep it in the "life line" in the palm of your hand. I found that if you roll your left hand clockwise just a bit, it was a lot more comfortable. That maybe the issue with your pain. I love arm locking though and whenever I feel like I can't start the ball on line, I always go back to an arm lock to get the feel back. Hope to see it in your bag though!!!
If this isn’t proof that you need to switch over to arm lock, Rick, then I don’t know what is. You keep saying you’re not used to it but you’re putting as good if not better right of the gate with the arm lock…

Why ban a club that everyone has the opportunity to use. If it’s such an advantage, then use it 🤷🏻♂️. I think it should stay, and I would be really interested to give it a go myself.
Why not make the hole 4 times the size of everyone can play it? Because golf is a game and the point isn’t to make it as easy as possible, it’s to enjoy the challenge.
@@poocrayon4588 if the idea wasn’t the make the game as easy as possible then we would still be playing with wooden clubs? I guess you don’t agree with twist face on new drivers then? Surely the more enjoyable the game is, and the better peoples golf can be, the more people we can get involved in the sport? 🤷🏻♂️
@@HarryProffitt No I don't agree that those things make the game more enjoyable - driver heads should still be wooden. There is a point in time in which the tech makes the game too easy and fundementally changes it - golf is way past that but because there's money in club manufacture it keeps getting pushed. Other games like baseball had the sense not to swap to high tech aluminium bats just because they hit further - they leave that shit for little kids and womens leagues. What does hitting further with drivers really get us? Every course either becomes a pitch and putt or else they lengthen courses - and then I'm walking further to play the same shots that just travel a bit further while spending more money on clubs. And I'm supposed to be impressed with that and find it enjoyable? Before you think I'm some geezer I'm 29 and have only played a few years and when I play socially I always use persimmon woods and old irons and a simple putter - it is more enjoyable to me and the feel is way better. It's really not that hard - if it was golf wouldn't have been popular all this time. With new drivers you don't even have to middle it. I also don't agree that making everything high tech and easy af helps grow the game. How the f does having more expensive clubs grow the game or having more matinence fees for members because of bigger courses make people wanna become members? It doesn't. People that don't know anything about golf aren't playing because of 460cc drivers with adjustable weight and swivel heads, only some golf nerd would think that. That kind of tech has it's place but it's place is allowing senior citezens to keep playing as their physicality designs or for women to play with especially if it's mixed company. No normal man or teenage boy needs that shit to enjoy golf.
it is an advantage, and everyone should be using either the evenroll or the bettinardi, but many are set in their ways for whatever reason, and would rather stay with whatever they are used to.

Looks a bit windy over there at the Worsley Rick! 😉 Thanks for doing the comparison video. Very interesting. It’s certainly taking the wrists out of things, but the two points everyone needs to remember is you still have to pick the correct line and pace, whatever the putter you have in your hands (or arms!)
Back when i played regular golf ( many years ago now ) i guess you could say i used this method without the need for a longer club ... holding the grip lower and " locking " it into my wrist my putting was pretty decent tbh , a small adjustment to how the face approached the ball ie tilted more forward was all i needed to consistently putt well
The science behind this putter is very good. I need to try it. I wonder if the grip was slightly bent leaning in towards your forearm would that sort the awkward painful wrist.
Xander Schauffele uses it but thinks they should be banned. “I am for banning the armlock putters, but if everyone else is going to use it, and I feel like they have a bigger advantage, I may as well do the same.
I think cant go wrong with a normal putter to be fair. What is with the other style of potters being used noticed 2 or 3 in the open similar to the old anchor putters but they are using the hand to bridge the putter and the golfers chest ?
Really enjoyed this video Mr Rick. Sometimes I don't always like your videos but I appreciate that you have a lot of different types and it keeps me coming back 🤜🤛

I'm glad that you are actually testing the club out beforehand. I watched a few videos recently (such as the one where you play St. Andrews backwards with hickory clubs) where you apparently hit your shots cold. I just think...well, this isn't going to start well...
i'd like to try one. i could even make one out of a spare alternate putter with an extension and a doubled up grip, would have to most likely mess around with head weight.

@rick shiels - Any chance you could do a similar test, but do the arm-lock putter first? It is possible that you became more comfortable with the read and speed of the 8ft putt and that played a part. To your point, the stroke did look more stable however, so curious your thoughts on a new putt with the arm-lock first.
I've tried the Enroll midlock and Odyssey equivalent putter. I liked the midlock much more. First time testing it, it felt very natural to me. I just bought the Evnroll midlock and can't wait to take it out on the course.
I started putting crosshanded in the 1980’s in an attempt to get the same type of stability in the stroke that this putter seems to give . I am definitely gonna try this out.
I've been putting like this since I was a little kid using an old odessy putter found in my uncle's barn that had been run over by a car and the shaft was bent 20 degrees forward. Having your hands that far forward makes it relatively easy to lock your left wrist even without the whole arm-lock deal. My style has always used left arm maintains direction/aim, right arm controls power. Its always worked well for me, this product is interesting because it seems like the closest analog to how I've putt my whole life. (Yes I still play with that same old bent to hell putter, 25 years later)
I’ve been putting that way since the 1980s but using a standard Ping putter. I tried it after watching Bernhardt Langer use it in the 1985 masters. Not only does it stop you being too wristy it also places your eyes directly over the ball, which helps with alignment.
Rick, as usual great video. I might like to see you use different color balls when you alternate shots with two putters like you did here. The visual would be good for determining how each putter preforms.

Same with any cavity backs he tests
@@MrLewyboy but nawww they’re “too ugly”
I loved the smirk of joy after rolling 6 in row in from 8 feet with the arm lock
I dont know why there is a debate on this especially for the pro level. I haven't seen someone who was absolutely a terrible putter now rolling everything in
Bryson.... his putting pre arm lock was terrible. Post he became one of the best putters. I mean he was so bad before he was even trying things like that side saddle straight shaft technique lol if you Havnt seen it look it up
@@pipedown7969 I don't see any stats on pgatour.com where he is ranked in the top 10
@@ANtA585 he’s #10 in strokes gained putting all 2020 according to pgatour.com.
@@ZahraIsMyDog yeah but the other 9 dont armlock
@@birdiesnbogeys7380 yeah but dude just said Bryson isn’t top ten on the site when he literally is. That’s all.
I have that black er2 with the gravity grip, can I throw the armlock on it or do I need a different club altogether?
Why ban a club that everyone has the opportunity to use. If it’s such an advantage, then use it 🤷🏻♂️. I think it should stay, and I would be really interested to give it a go myself.
Why not make the hole 4 times the size of everyone can play it?
Because golf is a game and the point isn’t to make it as easy as possible, it’s to enjoy the challenge.
@@poocrayon4588 if the idea wasn’t the make the game as easy as possible then we would still be playing with wooden clubs? I guess you don’t agree with twist face on new drivers then? What about drivers where you can adjust the weight in the head? All designs that make the game easier and more enjoyable for both the average and elite golfer.
I bought this putter about a month ago and I love it. Much more confident on short putts, I feel like I can't miss.
If it was such an advantage, everyone would be using it.
it is an advantage, and everyone should be using either the evenroll or the bettinardi, but many are set in their ways for whatever reason, and would rather stay with whatever they are used to.
That’s an idiotic statement. Not “everyone” was using an anchored putter before it was banned.
Give it time, you'll see golfers giving this a try.
Well is it the putter that is unique or the grip? Do I need to get an Evnroll putter or just put an Armlock grip on my Scotty Cameron knock off?
The people that complain about armlock are just mad they cant put
Putt*
But the people that use armlock putters are the ones that couldn’t putt to start with.
@@sfst2 ah yes, like Matt Kuchar, the shittiest putter around...

Looks a bit windy over there at the Worsley Rick! 😉
Thanks for doing the comparison video. Very interesting. It’s certainly taking the wrists out of things, but the two points everyone needs to remember is you still have to pick the correct line and pace, whatever the putter you have in your hands (or arms!)
hope they don't let everybody get used to it and then ban it like the anchor style--rediculous by the ruling bodies.
Back when i played regular golf ( many years ago now ) i guess you could say i used this method without the need for a longer club ... holding the grip lower and " locking " it into my wrist my putting was pretty decent tbh , a small adjustment to how the face approached the ball ie tilted more forward was all i needed to consistently putt well
If it was that much of a game changer, everyone would use armlock
More and more are switching it seems...but it won't help with reading greens!!
In 5-10 years most pros will use armlock. They just haven’t made the switch
Can a standard putter be converted to a 'arm lock' putter? For instance can you buy a 'arm lock' grip?
Rick has inspired me to get back into golf last year, thanks for another great informative video. The accent makes me feel fancy and cultured. Cheers.
Manc accent, fancy and cultured?
Rick makes the best content
The science behind this putter is very good. I need to try it. I wonder if the grip was slightly bent leaning in towards your forearm would that sort the awkward painful wrist.
For me, it all comes down to that 6 inch putter between my ears. I've heard it said that golf is 90% mental and the other 10% is mental.
I've got the same putter and it's brilliant! I consider myself a good putter but do get nervy on short puts sometimes..not with this putter
Xander Schauffele uses it but thinks they should be banned.
“I am for banning the armlock putters, but if everyone else is going to
use it, and I feel like they have a bigger advantage, I may as well do
the same.
Bullshit banning these. It's already limited enough that you can't lock it over the elbow
I've been looking to get my putter regripped with a midlock cuz im a bit of a flicky putter too. Glad to hear it helps
I got an armlock this year and I’m NEVER going back. If they end up banning it I’ll have to become an outlaw.
So, how much of the change was the difference in putter face loft, since the arm lock shut it down several degrees?
Straight up, Rick looks like he’s rocking a toupee
I think cant go wrong with a normal putter to be fair. What is with the other style of potters being used noticed 2 or 3 in the open similar to the old anchor putters but they are using the hand to bridge the putter and the golfers chest ?
Wouldn’t you just be more used to the line that you just hit ten puts at? I don’t think the 8/10 is that crazy
I honestly am not sure what I like more. The new putter or Ricks haircut! Looking good buddy, thanks for the great video!
Bryson isn't even in the top 20 putters on the pga tour lol. And Xander's putting was much better before he switched lol
Bryson is 30th this year, and finished 10th overall last season. Shut up lol.
Been on UA-cam for 12 years ! This guy can make content 10/10
Anything that gives you an edge should be allowed
Great info have you tried the wrist lock grip I'm just about to get one
Rick have you ever tried the wilson harmonized chipper, I would like to see a vid on it, I just purchased one to try next summer
very curious to see more info on this. Really need to improve my putting...
Really enjoyed this video Mr Rick. Sometimes I don't always like your videos but I appreciate that you have a lot of different types and it keeps me coming back 🤜🤛
I think what you said about realizing that you are a bit of a wrist flicky putter is a big reason why you should stick with a putter like this..develope a repeatable putting stroke and build your putting confidence..I now will go out and get one and do the same
I'm glad that you are actually testing the club out beforehand. I watched a few videos recently (such as the one where you play St. Andrews backwards with hickory clubs) where you apparently hit your shots cold. I just think...well, this isn't going to start well...
Is that grip only available with that putter? Is it made by Evnroll?
i'd like to try one. i could even make one out of a spare alternate putter with an extension and a doubled up grip, would have to most likely mess around with head weight.
hi rick. hockey player here and new golfer. im finding holding the putter like a hockey stick (laugh at me its ok) feels better since im use to it. but struggling to find a left handed belly putter. any advice? 40" looks perfect but no one seems to make them lh
What length is that midlock putter?! That's a must-have in my bag.
Why do you switch grip on a shorter putt with the standard putter?
Can a standard length club be adapted (by just changing grip and adding a plug) to the armlock style or is it a new shaft and grip. Just curious!
It can be done, but arm lock putters really need more loft and a more upright lie angle to work best.
Rick is there more loft on this putter to account for the shaft lean
