  • Every legendary player has that moment that changed their career and sent them on the path to stardom. For Tennessee freshman Peyton Manning, that moment came on September 24, 1994 when the No. 23 Vols took in Mississippi State.
At the time, Tennessee was led at quarterback by Todd Helton - yes, future Rockies and MLB legend Todd Helton, but after Helton went down with a knee injury the Vols were forced to go to their third string quarterback to start the season - Peyton Manning. It took just two plays for Manning to burst onto the scene, completing a 77-yard touchdown pass to put Tennessee on the board. From there, Manning started every game of the rest of his collegiate and professional career.

I think that peyton manning has a future in the NFL. He may even win some MVPs and a couple of Super Bowls.

Just to think this was just the start of the career of the greatest QB in NFL history Peyton Manning, I don't care how many titles some have he was the best. Todd Helton went on to be a great Major League Baseball player guess their destiny's were meant to be in this game.

It is wild to me the famous baseball player Todd Helton was the starter before the great Peyton Manning took over. I remember this season but I was only like 6 or 7 at the time.i have a feeling this is the moment Todd decided to stick to baseball..
    Good decision bro

Todd Helton was not the only major league baseball player that played with the Rockies to play college football as a quarterback with a Manning.
Seth Smith was Eli Manning's backup quarterback at Ole Miss. Smith and Helton were teammates for the Colorado Rockies.

Being from Colorado and having watched Todd Helton at Coors Field makes me realize that a lot of pro athletes could've gone pro and excel in another sport other than the sport they're in

Todd was kind of 'meh' at UT as a QB; but, you're right. Brady was a very good baseball player, for instance.

Crazy when I think back those 3 were in the QB room! Helton big name for a while in the majors. I remember Peyton was my last pick cause Brandon had wheels and I was thinking as freshman??? Wow, guess that’s why I never coached football.😁
And I miss the peace of mind knowing that VOL defense was going to get stops.😏
I can’t believe I had forgotten how many turnovers their were in this game…….like a basketball stat.

Tennesee coaching lost them this game, and Hayden fumbling twice back to back like that.. All Peyton did was have them driving down the field all game. He throws 1 pick, and gets benched after throwing 2 TD's and 200yds.. Then comes back in and Hayden fumbles twice...
