I have a Dodge with 300,000- 5.7 Hemi- 2004 year. And a Ford 4.2 f150 with 300,000. Both Gas. Both tow- probably more than they should, lol. I pulled a 6000 pound trailer with that 300,000 mile Ford v-6 multiple times, hard on the trans- which I believe is a Mazda unit- 5 speed.
Hey bill I have a question about the 7.3 powerstroke I got in a wreck and the front axle slid back and crunched the oil pan in and I was wondering can I replace it without pulling the motor and what would be the easiest and best way to do so
When you were giving spot throttle why is the truck making the howling noise like it is, my 7.3 does the same thing when you get into the throttle at higher rpm, and I cannot find anything on if it’s fine or somethings going out.
Francisco Tovar dont use diesel engine oil in a gasoline engine, unless it doesn't have catalytic converters. The additives in diesel oil can clog up the converters over time.
I remember an ad from way back for the Dodge/Cummins that said to be careful when you cross a state line that you're not pulling the entire state with you!
Apples to oranges. Get a later model Dodge extended cab with a P7100 pump, let someone play with it, add injectors, intake, exhaust and build a transmission. The Dodge is coming out on top with double the power I guarantee.
They’re very reliable. They’re also very gutless. Issues…they leak oil, the return lines leak, and I believe you have to use an SCA in your coolant system to prevent cavitation, but that could just be on the 7.3 idi’s. And they’re very underpowered. I’ve driven one as a farm truck, and when you put 4 or 5 hay trailers on the back, you realize that the accelerator pedal doesn’t make it go faster it just makes it louder. Other than that the only issue is they don’t make them anymore. Good trucks. And the motors can be had for cheap cause people don’t want them as much as the 12V’s and 7.3 PSD’s cause you can’t turn them up.
Amen on the haulin' hay for summer football conditioning. My coach here in our small town in TN always had us jobs lined up all summer to haul square bales of hay and then throw them up in the barn loft. It works every single muscle of your body. Also, its about 95F and you have to wear long sleeve shirts and pants or the hay will eat you alive. Like you said, football camp was a vacation once we got to August. Good times. Kids now days have no idea. It is our fault, though. We have mechanized all the summer jobs kids had at our age.
Great video, I enjoy all the comments complaining about the unfair comparison that you said was a unfair comparison from the get-go. If I could have found a Dodge like that one when I was shopping for a truck I probably would have bought it but luckily I found a 06 Kings Ranch F350 with low miles at a good price for the West Coast and I couldn't be happier.
is that black headliner in "spot" factory or aftermarket? if it's aftermarket, around how much would one expect to pay to get a good quality blacked out headliner?
I have an 05 excursion with 176000 miles. Love it I have replaced the fuel standpipes and dummy plugs twice. Something is causing the drivers side standpipe to fail.
Compare a 1990 7.3l non turbo to that Dodge. 7.3l are good engines, they are louder than no other plus the ones I have seen all leak oil like crazy. 10+ years driving Ford 6.0L Ambulance, I can honestly say I have had to have an ambulance towed a dozen times in 10 years. All for engine related issues. The 2010+ with the v10 were much more reliable.
i had a brand new 2005 f350 6 litre i towed it 3 times the first year by the 3rd year there was a big power difference after lease was up i went back to gas never looked back
Drastic Measures Had a 2000 7.3 stick and HATED it. Worst shifting truck I ever drove. Was terrible if you got stuck in traffic. Clutch would grab right off the floor and was hard as could be to push down. I traded it in because of it. Liked the truck though. Found out later the previous owner traded it in because of the manual again.
I've got a 97 with the auto tranny - and I like it! I tow a 30 ft travel trailer that weighs about 7600 lbs. Had a billeted torque converter installed and a bunch of other needed upgrades (like an intercooler!) and now I'm keeping this non-catalytic converter, non-DEF, coal rolling beauty forever. Ha.
Ive got a 91 ram 250 cummins and i love the truck for how easy it is to maintain, in the first pages of the manual it says "this engine was designed to be worked on in a driveway with a handful of wrenches." Thats the spirit that went into the design of the motor which is one reason you will see more old cummins on the road than any other old desiel. The engine is so damm reliable that i havent had to to a single thing to it since i bought it, well i did swap some gaskets but thats a cakewalk. Dodge trucks weak points arent usually in the motor, dodge has solid engines but thier suspension and automatic transmissions are among the worst in the truck game. But pick your poison, in a dodge cummins you wont have to worry about engine failure unless you dont maintain it at all, but expect it to eat through transmissions and need a new front end every 100k miles or less.
2019 ford f250 6.7l power stroke , i don’t know much about diesel, how would this truck do as a daily driver/short trip truck, (no deletes) no towing or hauling, 6 miles to work and 6 miles back home? a grocery getter. long trip once a year. i just want a big truck, i like the sound of the 6.7l power stroke diesel.

I have a 7.3 thing wont start on the key when its damp out but runs perfect and no other problems. What's the most cost effective solution? Leaky windshield is just a hunch Ive heard about it from some local mechanics. Any help in the right direction would be great!
Believe it or not I had this same issue and changed the CPS. Disconnect batteries FIRST ! You can take just the ground off both batteries is good. Disconnect the CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) wire and put di-electric grease in the connector and reassemble first. Reconnect batteries LAST ! If this doesn't cure it proceed to the next step. Word to the wise. Always carry a spare CPS and tools to change it in the glovebox. (10mm 1/4" drive socket and ratchet and small flat blade screwdriver to pry back CPS connector. Don't pry to hard it will break ! ). Disconnect the batteries FIRST ! Wait a while (20 min) then disconnect the ECU connectors and WD40 them. Both sides. Don't take much, you're not soaking a rusty bolt/nut. Inspect for corrosion. Brush with nylon (toothbrush) Both sides. Let that soak awhile. Disconnect the main firewall connector and soak WD40 here. Inspect for corrosion. Brush with nylon. After soaking, Brush all connector sides again then get a large tube of di-electric grease and lightly coat both firewall connector and ECU connectors both sides and reassemble. Connecting your batteries LAST ! Your damp no start condition should be cured.
can we all just agree 12valve cummins and the 7.3 PSD are the great diesels ever built! choose one they will serve you well! Like the Fender stratocaster and the gibson les paul guitars. If you choose either one I would say great choice!
Clocker 1.... I like the Gibson Les Paul Custom...deep rich sound..preferred guitar of Duane Allman. Fender Stratocaster..sharp tone and 6x cheaper than a Gibson Les Paul Custom. My knowledge is every professional musician should have both....think of it this way...it is like owning a new Porsche 911 Turbo and a new ZO6 Corvette...both great cars...I would love to have both...they are both "sport cars" as we can agree, but very different in many aspects...Jimi Hendrix used both, including a Gibson Flying V. Every one needs to "Chang it Up" once in a while and experiment with a different sound...no different than owning different diesel makes...why not??? John K
I've been trying to decide which truck to get to pull my fifth wheel between a dodge and Ford. Between you and my cousin (who owns a diesel mechanic shop) saying how simple the Cummins is, I've decided on the dodge. DEBOSS GARAGE Sorry I almost forgot to mention, I absolutely love your videos Rich!! You do excellent work! Your Tahoe that you built has really inspired me to attempt a 4BT swap/build of my own with an old ford ranger I picked up cheap with a junk motor. Keep up the great work!
DEBOSS GARAGE it would cost him business if he admitted the cummins is the far superior engine
Just when I was wondering if Deboss had ever watched any of these videos and wondered what his thoughts would be I found this comment 😂
Early 5.9 Cummins with a 5 speed! Can't get better than that.
All an intercooler and fantastic
Loved it thanks, keep them coming. You are spot on with the motorcycle riding. I have been all over the place on mine for 43 year's but people have their heads up their ass anymore.
You know what they say.... If you're gonna drive a truck drive a Ford!
Thanks for the laugh Homie!
He’s a part time security guard clearly
Loved this! Looking forward to your next video! Shits & giggles or business, doesn’t matter to me! Have enjoyed your videos over the years 👍🏻
😂😂 I was wondering why you were going to have those trucks have a pull off. But like you said...”Homie don’t play dat”. Haven’t heard that in years. 😂😅 Classic!!
Enjoy watching all your videos. Thanks for all the shared knowledge that you put out there!
cool video! It's nice to see a comparison video that isn't just constant bashing of one make/model. I don't know much about the dodges so I learned a fair bit.
I could have a beer with you
There's no other diesel truck that can beat the durability of a Cummins engine yet .period
I use to have one of theses dodge identical to the one in this video. I loved it but I needed 4 wheel drive and more power. Now driving an 06 f250 with 6.0. Your video are key to keeping it going. Thanks
I am typing this comment on the floor because I've laughed myself right out of my chair- that ending is freaking priceless.
Great video Bill, never thought i would see you in a dodge. Homie lol
cummins are the easiest for me to work on please keep in mind I'm no mechanic so I'm gonna stick to having a truck that has a cummins love 6.7 cummins
I love these old rigs . My 2001 f250 has 141 thousand miles on it , it’s previous owner wasn’t nice to her but I’ve got that girl running like new . Very solid trucks
Damnit Bill, it's Cummins not Cummings! Lol, but I loved the truck pull at the end!
Which one you prefer the 7.3 or 5.9 in the hot shot trucking business with a 40-foot gooseneck trailer
Got both they fell the same
7.3
Hey bill I have a question about the 7.3 powerstroke I got in a wreck and the front axle slid back and crunched the oil pan in and I was wondering can I replace it without pulling the motor and what would be the easiest and best way to do so
When you were giving spot throttle why is the truck making the howling noise like it is, my 7.3 does the same thing when you get into the throttle at higher rpm, and I cannot find anything on if it’s fine or somethings going out.
My God. I love your videos
Thanks for all you do for the ford owners.
Had me all the way to the end. An enjoyable 18 minute ride. Thanks !
Hi it's ok if i put a 10 w30 diesel oil in a gasoline truck in a v6 truck.
Francisco Tovar dont use diesel engine oil in a gasoline engine, unless it doesn't have catalytic converters. The additives in diesel oil can clog up the converters over time.
you're funny AF. glad you're doing something you clearly love lol. it shows.
I remember an ad from way back for the Dodge/Cummins that said to be careful when you cross a state line that you're not pulling the entire state with you!
I knew you wouldn't treat another mans truck to a pull off! You had me for a minute though! Love my rusty bucket 2003 7.3
😂😂😂 homy dont play that lol keep up the great work bill cant wait for the next vid
Apples to oranges. Get a later model Dodge extended cab with a P7100 pump, let someone play with it, add injectors, intake, exhaust and build a transmission. The Dodge is coming out on top with double the power I guarantee.
Every time I drive down the road moving my car, if my seat belt wasn't buckled, I always shout "Diesel Tech Ron" as I buckle. I
So I have a question for you Billy. What is your take on the 6.9 diesel in the old 80s Fords?
I love my 6.9 reliable workhorse
Amen on the haulin' hay for summer football conditioning. My coach here in our small town in TN always had us jobs lined up all summer to haul square bales of hay and then throw them up in the barn loft. It works every single muscle of your body. Also, its about 95F and you have to wear long sleeve shirts and pants or the hay will eat you alive. Like you said, football camp was a vacation once we got to August. Good times. Kids now days have no idea. It is our fault, though. We have mechanized all the summer jobs kids had at our age.
5:53 Trying to fit my big ass into a sardine can. This episode is awesome.
Thanks for the laughs Bill 👍🏻
Great video, I enjoy all the comments complaining about the unfair comparison that you said was a unfair comparison from the get-go. If I could have found a Dodge like that one when I was shopping for a truck I probably would have bought it but luckily I found a 06 Kings Ranch F350 with low miles at a good price for the West Coast and I couldn't be happier.
Ha-ha my '05 F450 has 490k hard miles on original engine !
I love your videos, thank you for helping out the Vets as well you're a good guy.
is that black headliner in "spot" factory or aftermarket? if it's aftermarket, around how much would one expect to pay to get a good quality blacked out headliner?
I have an 05 excursion with 176000 miles. Love it I have replaced the fuel standpipes and dummy plugs twice. Something is causing the drivers side standpipe to fail.
Any idea what is causing it to fail?
Compare a 1990 7.3l non turbo to that Dodge.
7.3l are good engines, they are louder than no other plus the ones I have seen all leak oil like crazy.
10+ years driving Ford 6.0L Ambulance, I can honestly say I have had to have an ambulance towed a dozen times in 10 years. All for engine related issues. The 2010+ with the v10 were much more reliable.
I have a 01 7.3. It don’t leak a drop. Had it since it was brand new. It is pretty loud though.
i had a brand new 2005 f350 6 litre i towed it 3 times the first year by the 3rd year there was a big power difference after lease was up i went back to gas never looked back
That 7.3 needs a Manual Transmission.
My 95 has a stick, and I would trade someone for their automatic, in a heartbeat!
Ha.
Love my zf6 7.3. Not the smoothest shifting trans, but not bad once you learn to float gears. Wouldnt ever want an auto.
callofdutyguy9 my 7.3 is a manual and sounds good with the turbo upgrades
I was about to say at the end, I can't believe he's doing that! LOL I remember the video where you had to fix a truck someone did that with.
Yep love this one Bill. Oh my pastor is always ragging on me for driving a Ford 7.3L. He uses his Ford is acronym on me all the time. But every time his truck breaks down he calls his brother to come and rescue him, his brother drives a Ford truck. So I told him Ford stands for: are you ready for it? "Forever Out Rescuing Dodges", LOL. Yep, Pastor Mike has had two NEW Dodge trucks to his brothers single OLD Ford truck. Yes Pastor Mike does take care of his trucks. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya
That ending was hilarious lol :)
"I suppose you want me to go ahead and denicrate myself" Hilarious
One of the best videos on UA-cam
I've heard that weird turbo moan before - in semi trucks. There's a small leak in the turbo system somewhere, usually a hose, that's leaking a bit of boost pressure.
Your commentary from start to finish made this one of your best videos hahaha!!!!
Dammit Homi, got me.
Seriously would you do a pitfalls, failures and Achilles heal on the 2013 and up 6.7 powerstrokes!!! Please, they have been out for long enough that y’all must have a opinion. Maybe throw in some longevity add on that really work and not a bunch of BS. I use Archoil but that’s all I know some stuff just looks like snake oils. Thanks keep up the good work- Friday
whats a good tune for a 1995 7.3l powerstroke pulling 16k lbs equipment trailer on flat grounds of indiana?
Most entertaining video is a while. Hopefully there is a Chevy or even Nissan video soon. The entire video had me laughing.
Got a question, when you showed the inside of spot, I notice that the center console was from a 08-10 or whatever year model truck. my question is will those particular center console fit in an 05 ford superduty with captain front seats? or what do you have to do to make it work?
+powerstrokehelp - Bill, what do you think of the gasoline inline 6-cylinder 4.9 Ford engines? I know it's not something you'd own, necessarily, but I wonder about your opinion.
Disconnect the CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) wire and put di-electric grease in the connector and
reassemble first. Reconnect batteries LAST ! If this doesn't cure it proceed to the next step. Word to the wise.
Always carry a spare CPS and tools to change it in the glovebox. (10mm 1/4" drive socket and ratchet
and small flat blade screwdriver to pry back CPS connector. Don't pry to hard it will break ! ).
Disconnect the batteries FIRST ! Wait a while (20 min) then disconnect the ECU connectors
and WD40 them.
After soaking, Brush all connector sides again then get a large
tube of di-electric grease and lightly coat both firewall connector and ECU connectors both sides and
reassemble.
Clocker 1 Detroit's are just as good
Bruce Springsteen Not in the GM 6.2/6.5 they aren't. A 4bt or 6bt in a pickup would be nice though.
John K
Well said.
I've been trying to decide which truck to get to pull my fifth wheel between a dodge and Ford. Between you and my cousin (who owns a diesel mechanic shop) saying how simple the Cummins is, I've decided on the dodge. I'm not crazy about their transmissions but I would rather worry about the transmission than the engine.
Got some good laughs out of this one. Keep it up!
