I just need to say, DJI is a drone company. They don’t have a “half arse it” marketing plan. They actually try to make great products and seriously, it shows. I’m sure this is going to wake up the uninterested community of “don’t make it too good” camera companies!

Well, they knew they were at a marketing disadvantage, given that they are a drone company, so to make a big splash in the vlogging camera market, they had to overcompensate and outdo everybody with a great product that other companies are trying to scrimp on.
You just wait till their version of the Sorrny A7s3 comes out, in 6 months.

I can confirm. Normal color profile is way to go. It's is still 10 bit.
And yes, these microjitters when auto tracking are kinda annoying especially if you walking fast on uneven terrain. But the tracking when camera is stationary is really good feature ... for cooking shows, for car show etc. 1 man band got a new tool.

It only allows 10-bit in Normal if you are recording in HEVC. H264 will default to 8-bit. Just an FYI for anyone reading comments and wondering why they don't see that option on their Pocket 3.
@@RandumbTech Good to know. I always record in HEVC when possible. It offers much better quality for the same bandwidth.
Picked one up. Some might frown on the 9.4MP 1 inch sensor. But it's a 1 INCH SENSOR with fewer pixels = larger pixels, this is the low light king for action cameras. FINALLY! I did a side by side comparison with my GoPro 11, inside our living room at night with one desk lamp and Christmas tree as lighting sources. The DJIP3 footage is incredible in low light mode, even at the lower bitrate and at 8-bit (which I don't undertand, but anyway). The folks at GoPro must be scratching their heads. The low light footage from the DJIP3 is much better than my Sony RX100 M7 with the 20MP 1 inch sensor. DJI hit the nail on the head with the larger pixels in the one inch sensor. Congratulations.
You're not comparing apple to apple. Even action 4 doesn't hold any candle to pocket 3 in term of IQ.
Action cam after all is action cam, made for more challenging weather/environment and robust. It lacks focus mechanism so it will never be sharper in all condition than pocket 3 that have focusing mechanism. Pocket 3 has hardware stabilization which helps a lot in low light, action cam footage in low light falls apart real quick.
@@trym2121 - Agreed. I bought the DJIP3 specifically for low light situations, if I can also use it for highly lit situations than all the better. I do like GoPro's footage in daylight, I may continue to use it in that way. It would have been nice if GoPro came out with a low MP 1-inch sensor to stay in their ecosystem, but perhaps the electronic stabilization prevents them from doing so. In which case I'm glad I acquired the DJI and started the transition. It all makes sense now. Cheers!

You cannot deny physics with bigger sensor. Sony RX0 has f4 or Insta360 One RS F3.2 vs pocket 3 f2. Because of no focusing mechanism in action cam, the lens have to accommodate deeper depth of field. Unless they make some very tough and robust focusing mechanism that can withstand action cam level of abuse so they can make it faster, I can't see action cam IQ in low light can improve substantially
the pocket is not an action camera. try to stick it on a racecar and the vibration will make the gimbal into shit... literal shit. i film comercials for redbull. and the acepro is what we are excited about

I always am so awake during your videos (a compliment)! I love my pocket 3 and agree about the normal color mode; generally really good. I hadn’t realized the 240 1080p was so good - I figured it was crap, but will ignore it no longer! About the extra battery handle: for big paws like mine it is more comfortable and also doesn’t cover the built in misc if using those. True stealthiness is definitely better without however:). 6:41 - This is my tip for you. Don't use LOG on any camera, and specifically the DJI when it's cloudy or otherwise low contrast. It's not going to give you any benefits and might mess up things like AF. Even with the A7rV, arguably the most advanced AF camera on the market, I've had problems with AF and S-Log. Even when I ride my bike with the pocket, that's the one setting I make sure to change if the sun goes down doing my ride, as soon as it does, I switch back to normal.
I am just so delighted and relieved to see footage that is both stable and in focus. The other things are just minor details that you'll work out in time.
Casey, just tap the right hand side of the screen and it will switch between zoom and joystick control. if you see the 1.0x on the right hand side, when you use the joystick it will zoom in and out. Just tap it and then it will revert to up and down on the joystick. hope that helps
Since i left Canada in 2016 it's always been great to come back to your videos and be taken on a tour through the canadian streets! It's kind of your trademark, and i love it, it's great... Oh yeah i usually pass by to get very useful info on cameras! Especially this Pocket 3... The beauty effect was hilarious as it was scary!!!

Regarding face tracking in the rule of thirds: if you do not prefer the exact position point options you are given, you can actually use the joystick to move yourself over (to anywhere in the frame) while in that mode. 🙂 Enjoy! I knew you'd love this camera!

In case you don’t know already, but the sharpness/ NR have to be set for each profile. It’s not a global setting like with the Insta360 cameras.
@@philipbloom Ya I noticed that on my Action 4, I switched into Normal colour thinking my sharpness was still -2 but it wasn't. It's definitely possible that I did that again lol.

It has been such a long and memorable journey! Who would have guessed it would end this way. I thought the Nikon z30 was nearly perfect. I now know it was but a dream. I bought one and, after several weeks of using it... I have buyer's remorse 😞
There are too many things that are just not good about this camera. When you set up the face-tracking for rule-of-thirds while vlogging and then rotate the gimbal to look ahead it forgets about the ROT settings when you swing the gimbal back to your face and you have to manually set the position again 😕
Sometimes the FT mode just doesn't work or it simply stops tracking my face while vlogging -- I know I'm no oil painting but this is insulting 🙂
As you pointed out, when you add any filter or lens then the damned thing can't lock the camera when you turn it off so it won't fit back in the little hard-shell. Sure, there are a couple of places in the hard-shell where you can place the magnetic filters/lenses but this means you have to take them off and then refit them every time you put the camera in or take it out of the shell and that inevitably produces fingerprints on those lenses/filters 😕
The zoom control is awful. More often than not, when attempting to zoom using the screen I end up going into that tilt-locked mode where the joystick then becomes the zoom control and I have to fiddle around to get things back to normal 😕
There is no gimbal lock to let you track fast moving objects. What they call "gimbal lock" doesn't lock the gimbal to the body it locks the gimbal onto whatever it's pointed at so that you absolutely can't track anything at all. 😕
I still get confused as to which way to move the joystick to reframe... it works one way when facing you and the reverse when facing forward -- why can't it work the same in both directions -- ie: why can't "up" always move the camera "up"? 😕
Unless you set the EV to at least -0.5 then highlights will *always* be blown out which kind of ruins the 10-bit capabilities. 😕
The DLog isn't log at all -- it's simply a slightly desaturated, low-contrast Cine format which IMHO isn't really worth using because, as you point out, it actually reduces the dynamic range. 😕
Somehow I think that the engineers who designed this camera don't actually vlog and have never used this camera as it is intended to be used.
Would I buy this camera now, knowing what I know? Nope. I think the squillions of shill reviews posted by KOLs who got free units have massively oversold this camera's abilities.
In New Zealand this camera (creator combo) cost me almost $1,300 and I have camcorders that cost less and blow this thing away in terms of their usefullness as a vlogging camera. Call me unimpressed.

Don't use all those gimmick modes, and just be happy with it. Yes, -7 EV comp, that was literally the first thing I did. You have to know your camera companies, DJI overexposes, so does Nikon. There is literally nothing that beats this right now you sour grape monkey lol.
@@Kireth You have to realise that most of the day-one reviews were made by KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) that DJI provide with free gear, review notes and sometimes payment for their services and thus will be somewhat "biased" and opt to gloss over the shortcomings. I know this because I was a KOL at one stage -- until I gave a frank and honest review of a DJI product (unflattering) which saw me dropped as a KOL. I don't mind that because I work for my viewers, not for DJI. The Pocket 3 is still a fine little camera -- it's just overpriced and over-hyped (IMHO).
Most of those ‘issues’ are down to you my friend, not DJI. You say that when it’s used in RoT with face tracking and then you deliberately move the camera away from your face to disable face tracking, you then expect it not only reacquire you when you turn the camera back on yourself (which it will, faultlessly), but also to then put you in RoT because that’s what you desire? You do realise this is about a third the price of an iPhone and you think it should include self-learning AI? Dude, buy yourself a camera crew then tell us all how good your footage is while your wife and bank manager have buyers remorse! I’ll give you $1000NZD for it if you’re that upset with it.
I just ordered a cover that encloses the whole gimbal. Pretty small. However I never thought of the wind sock idea. Very good. I’ll get one of those.

I knew you'd try the Pocket 3 eventually. On first look: it's pretty good. The background is defocused enough for some 3D pop while keeping your face tack sharp. I know several UA-camrs who use it. If I hadn't just bought a Hero 12, I'd definitely consider the Pocket 3. I look forward to more tests!

I think you’re the first one to point out the dlogm exposure problem. I’ve tested it a number of times. When backlit you can forget about it. I believe Normal is also 10-bit so I’ve been playing with making adjustments to that in post. -7 EV for the most part.
As using the Log mode presumes you'll be color correcting, it's really only a small matter of adjusting the shadow exposure as needed during that process; the benefit of the extended dynamic range is a very handy option
Yea, D-log M is a lie. Less dynamic range. I'm in -7 ev comp too, works well.
It's not even only implying that it will be color corrected, it implies proper exposure. Normal mode should be used for vlogging in that mode the camera is already baking in secondary color correction (exposing both the face and background in that extreme backlit example), that's "fake", but desirable for a user that just wants it to "work", and by the way that user do not need the extra DR that can be achieved using proper exposure in log. That takes processing power. Encoding in log usually requires more processing power, that's especially true if a higher bitrate is not used. But even if processing power is not a problem (I think it isn't the case just look the shitload of face filters it can also do in video). Log mode should absolutely not selective expose different parts/subjects of the image different ways. It would not be flat if it did that it would defeat the purpose it serves.
Exactly, and very well put. The conclussion would be that the OSMO 3 is a very capable camera system appropriate for many use types, including blogging, newsreal, production, etc. I hope that DJI is paying attention to the voluminous commentary that is being offered and inproves the camera with appropriate firmware upgrades.

Wow man, as a street photographer, that bit at 9:50 blew me away. It looks like somewhere between photography, parallax and film. I feel like that kind of capture could be a new style of street image. And the quality is amazing on top of it.

The general picture quality seems great from this thing, it even looked like a bit of 3d pop was there, slomo was absolute bonkers... if DJI ever made a normal mirrorless camera (not like that insane Ronin4d) with interchangeable lenses (small and light preferably), I'd be very interested!
Not first! LOL! Modes with less editing is the way to go! It would be cool if you had another camera on a chest mount while you were holding this or any other device that you were filming with to see how you hold/maneuver the device you're actually shooting the vlog with. Then, split screen those two videos so we can see the vlog and see you in action. Looking forward to the rest of the videos about this device. Have a great weekend!!
Someone else in the comments has given a good explanation as to why you appear underexposed in log (basically, it is doing its job correctly by giving you a flat profile and not baking in different exposure levels for different parts of the image as it does with normal profile, and is therefore adjustable in post by lifting shadows) but I have to say DJi's log profile is an absolute joy to work with. Maybe I'm used to my now ageing GH5 v-log, or the horrible Protune profile of GoPro, but the log coming out of both the Action 4 and the Pocket 3 is excellent. I just use the official DJi LUTs as a base and you're good to go. This is assuming colour correction is your thing, and I imagine many Pocket 3 owners don't want that extra hassle, but it's pretty powerful stuff for those who do want it.
You can never lift the shadows enough in post to have it look like it does in normal colour. And it's a huge pain in the ass to try.
@@cameraconspiracies if you can't lift the shadows enough then you have underexposed your footage, and as we know we ETTR for log. In your example the camera is trying not to blow the sky so in log you'd want to use a fill-in light. Since that defeats the object of the convenience of the pocket then normal profile is obviously a lot less hassle. But these 'issues' are a product of log's flat profile generally, not specific to the camera brand. Switching between custom settings (one for log, one for normal) is easy for those who need it, otherwise normal will do for most people. BTW, in either profile I'd recommend dialling down both sharpness and denoise to -2. A very happy New Year to you, keep doing what you're doing! I've been following you since Thailand, where I was living at the same time.

Fantastic review! But what exactly is Tilt Shift Mode? And when you are "filming discreet" at 9:52 and 12:50 how are you holding the Pocket 3? Still out in front but holding it horizontally? Or down by your side? I feel like if you are still holding it out, even tho horizontal, people would still see you holding something awkwardly and focus on the Pocket 3 to se what you doing? Can you show a shot on how you are holding the Pocket 3 for this purpose?

I wondered what you would think of this camera.
I have the Pocket 3 and so far I’m not as impressed as I thought I would be. No matter how much I play with the different settings, I can’t get it to look as good as any of the other UA-camrs.
I do think the blurry background when vlogging should be optional.
I’m also not a big fan of the face tracking for the reasons you mentioned. When other reviewers use it, I find it annoying.
Hopefully, I’ll get the kinks worked out. Or, worked in. Maybe that’s my problem.

I have one of these and it's embarrassingly good given I own a ZVE1 with a 24mm GMaster f1.4. All the stupid Sony , Canon crippled cameras and this has everything and a gimbal , radio microphone, log , 4k 120fps, Phase detect, 1" sensor, 10 bit, HDR it's mad and brilliant.

First impression of this camera: footage doesn't look like shit.

This thing has good footage and the toneh is also not intrusive. Good grade.
I still have my pocket 1 and it has a very good connection with wireless but you need the attachment. Also the pocket 1&2 has a nice selfie stick that gives you all the controls at the handle. That slow motion looks a lot better, and looking like at least 2 more stops of low light on the pocet3. It would be nice if you could change the fstop to at least 5.6 to get the background in focus. That would lower the shutter speed and maybe make it look more natural.
Other than your presentation, what I appreciated the most was @NathanWinklepleckCFA gifting it to you, witnessing this kindness made my day, so much so, that I am still thinking about it days later.

Hi mate, you can use the case with a ND fitted as when it detects a filter it automatically locks in to the second position facing same direction as the screen so it fits in the case with the lens facing down in to the case. It stays locked for several seconds after switching off to give you time to place in to the case.
You can also use the joystick whilst in face track to position your face anywhere on the screen.

Hey Kasey. Glad you finally got the OP3. Play around with the joystick to adjust your rule of third position. Its a bit of a learning curve, but I have found that between double or single tapping the joystick you can log on and off the tracking mode. This way you can adjust your framing to anywhere. I like your slow-motion street video clips, also tracking mode works in 2.4k @ 120fps
Finally dropped mine yesterday. Only like 18 inches into a table, but right onto the gimbal end. It survived, and I can’t decide if the mark on it is from the drop or rubbing on the case causing that, but I am now one step closer to maybe some day having to use the DJI care.
The only real problem I have with the camera is lack of 1/4 20 built straight in - like why couldn’t it just be a 1/4” longer to accommodate that? The stupid dongle extension thing isn’t better.
And then that I’m so afraid I’m going to break it that I don’t even want to use it. It’s so silly.
All they need to do is put this sensor and lens in a body like the X3000 and they will have (maybe) done it!
