Next time you're dealing with a lot of dust I recommend wearing N95 masks. Plain old face masks aren't rated for dust exposure.

So I just want to say that Kiwi Co. is freaking awesome. My oldest daughter gets a box every month and she loves them. If you have kids, do them a favor and sign them up for a crate subscription.

And here I am doing backup from one cheap Synology NAS to another over 10 mbit/s😭
I made a home server for myself to store photos and video on along with maybe running the occasional game on my steam library and honestly a gigabit feels too slow, especially when you consider it might be split between 1-3 people at any given moment. Generally the ethernet connection is the bottleneck for anything that done with the server.
@@cheat200 It's still roughly 120MB/s. A Gigabyte every 10 seconds at full speed. I reckon you don't produce more than a gigabyte of data every minute, so it's plenty enough, more than that sounds like a luxury need for me.
Hehe. I once saw a server that had been in a rack for 10+ years, running non-stop. Sun's UltraSPARC II servers were miraculous...
So, when we opened the case, I saw a bricket (literally) of compressed dust between the air intake and the radiator assembly. It was so tight we could shake ot away in one piece.

And now that remote backup is probably gone since kamloops or however you say it burned down during fire season. One of those fires I wish Canada had asked for assistance from the states for as I wish I had been deployed there to try and help

That kind of grotesque incompetence deserves to be memed on. Especially since it passed through who knows how many layers of quality control and made it to the point where it got published by a reputable-sounding organization. I'm willing to bet that that caused a lot of wasted money in the kinds of people who need to look up this kind of information and aren't able to sift the good sources and information from the bad.

I also have a really nice DATAVAC that will do either suck or blow. Sometimes that don't help much so I also use grounded paint brush and a gentle dusting with that always works well !!

Nice and clean compared to a pdp 11/03 that sat next to our coal slurry test rig back in the early 80's - DEC shouted at us when they saw it was drenched in coal dust - and we had to make a special airconditioned cupboard for it to sit in.
My pc was 10 years old like 2010. When i cleaned it there was more dirt, a black matter, more dirt cloud or the hair things.

I love how they’re silently slipping thru The Verge jokes in the videos
For future reference, 1. Open case, inspect and then turn over and let lose parts fall out. 2. rotate 360 in all directions and listen for lose parts and shake them out. 3. Take out side, put shop vac on blow and from 3 feet back blow it out and if you are nervous ground the case with a power cable to grounded outlet. I once had client that sold concrete and every 6 months the workstations had to be cleaned and the server about once a year. The solution on desktop was to move them off the ground to desktop.
Base on the statement that there could have been conductive dust, very unlikely with sheet rock unless someone was doing metal grinding in the area since it settles quickly.

Really a easy clean & rebuild, I once had to repair a "server" a 386, 1992?, that they left with a Slot cover missing, working in a factory, powering their network and Water Cutting Machine, MICE had decided it was nice & warm in there, so they made babies, chewed up paper to nest, crapped everywhere, amazingly it was still working until the day it stopped, and they called my shop, took me 2 weeks to clean the crap out, instead of chucking it out, Customer wanted whole unit saved, even after telling them, the Motherboard was Dead. The controller for the laser was on 16 bit card, which they they couldn't replace, and their "books" & Mail, was on it's Hard Drive, but I saved both, and reinstalled in a New Machine, not only do some people don't have their mice on the outside, they can't see it's time to start anew ...
Reminds me of when I Took Computer Systems Technology at my county Vo-Tech in high school. We would work on donated computers from various local factories. Step one was always taking the computer outside and blowing it out with a leaf blower. haha

The amount of dust in that is why when I was a computer repair tech I always had a stash of surgical mask and nitrile gloves on hand. I had to work on many nasty systems.
Somehow this video makes me want to go back to the first video of Linus tech tips when this channel is all about Linus building PC and sharing tips xD

I live in rural Nebraska. So it’s not uncommon to have dust kick up so bad it’s hard to see too see to drive to work. Especially during harvest. The dust situation is REAL.
If you do not have ZFS, rsnapshot might be your second best option for "incremental backups and time-machine-like setups". It is a much more "human friendly" solution as you can literally browse folders like "daily.2 will be a content of that folder on a day before yesterday". When I want to backup Windows' folder (like GDrive, that refuses to be installed on a Network mounted drive that could be on ZFS and would allow easy snapshots), rsnapshot via some network Linux computer or now even on a Windows machine via WSL can be set up (maybe LTT can make a video on this "how-to" as it is free and usefull). So it used to take 2 computers (1 Win, 1 Linux). Now you can run rsnapshot via WSL as a "local time-machine backup" all on a single computer.
The issue with rsnapshot vs. ZFS is that it needs to run rsync every time + checking time consuming file properties. If there are not a lot of files - it should be ok. If there are a lot of files, it will take some time, CPU and disk reading. ZFS will start and finish much quicker.
One more multi-OS sync application that performs well is Synctrayzor and it works intra-LAN and over internet. We use it to sync our Windows folders to a linux machine that has ZFS under synced folder where we can than create snapshots.
What is another common issue with offsite backups with a TB/daily is bandwidth. Intra-LAN LTT is now going for 25Gb speeds while it would even make sense to connect 2 servers with a 100Gb DAC cable if needed. Internet connection speed is often a much tougher task.
1TB/daily via 300Mb/s UPLOAD (more often a bottleneck than download) will take app. 7h. So 1/4 of each day rysnc is running. :S
1Gb upload speed is in many parts of the world very (and often too expensive) expensive.
