    Back in 2019 we challenged ourselves to build an all-flash version of Lumaforge's Jellyfish hard drive-based video editing server for the SAME price. We succeed, but we've always wondered, what if we went for feature and hardware parity, how much could be saved? The answer might shock you.

    • @Ghi102
      @Ghi102 2 роки тому +6

      If you're a PC gamer, your next PC upgrade means that you could probably use your old hardware as a NAS. Otherwise any old machine can do the job. 10 year old PCs with decent CPUs (like i5-2xxx or i7-2xxx) will handle the task beautifully. If you can grab an old "gaming PC" that's 10+ years old, it can also do the job really well. Just might need to replace the case to support more HDD.

    Nice vid, just few notes - SLOG is write cache for ZFS, but only for SYNC writes. Generally you'll use SAMBA which again is by default ASYNC in writes, so SLOG will not be used anyway. Also, SLOG is generally quite small since it buffers only SYNC writes.
    Next thing is - 2x mini SAS connectors - you can use SAS expanders so you can connect way more than just 8 drives to it. If it's somewhat newer, it's 12Gb/s per port and on each port you can attach several drives (with SAS expander), and still not bottleneck anything.

  • @bronekkozicki6356
    @bronekkozicki6356 3 роки тому +49

    Nice choice of components - I especially like L2ARC on NVME, 256GB ECC memory and the choice of the motherboard. However I would get rid of the power splitters off the power supply to disks and use a proper server chassis with a backplane attached to redundant power supplies, e.g. Supermicro 847BE1C4 or 847DE1C. Incidentally these have more disk bays, allowing for even bigger storage (36 or 90). More disks would allow for striped mirrors topology, which offers performance improvement on ZFS (and much faster rebuild times). Another improvement would be to use an extreme low latency device/high endurance SSD with power loss protection for SLOG, like Intel Optane DC P4800X or P4801X. SLOG gets flushed every 5 seconds (at most), so it does not have to be large. However L2ARC is a different story - it makes sense to use SSDs as big as possible. So I would use all M.2 slots for L2ARC only, and one PCIe slot for SLOG.

      I didn't dislike the video, but their setup is still not plug&play, you still have to manually configure a network. It's a shame, because setting it up for the "NAS" to take control over network configuration negotiation is not that hard (just make it essentially a router - it doesn't even have to bridge an internet connection, just be a LAN router). Still, they DID NOT make it "just plug and work", you STILL have to manually edit network settings on both machines and - really - not everyone would want to know how do that. Hell, you should at least KNOW you CAN do that to even attempt manual configuration, and Windows network settings spitting out "unidentified network" while IT IS ACTUALLY WORKING is not helping.
      1-drive SLOG and L2ARC are also questionable, while mirroring boot drive is an overkill - you can literally use a USB flash drive as a boot drive, there's nothing of value on it...

    Great idea - and hats off!
    I also had to think about expanding and improving my network storage 2 months ago: got a HP Proliant DL 380 Gen 9 LFF rack server with 2x Xeon, 32 GB memory, 2x PSU, 4x GBIT NIC and 2x 40GBit hp infinitiloop NIC for 200 Euro used + rail kit (50 euro)
    Then added another 32GB memory (100 euro), another 2x 10GBit NIC (60 euro), a HP P440 raid controller (60euro) the 12x LFF backplane with connectors (pricy - 300 euro) and 4x 3TB SAS HP drives (240 Euro) + some old SATA drives That have been sitting around.
    From here is it personal preference and the remaining infrastructure:
    I run windows 2016 hyper-v core (free) on which I installed a centos VM ( for trial and testing) as well as a windows server 2016 VM for media and video files / and also moved an existing windows 2012 VM (sql server onto it)
    So shy of 1000 euro I got a decent HP hyper-v host with 2x 8 cores + HT, 12x 3,5 slots, SAS and SATA compatibility, as well as 2x 40GBit, 2x 10 GBIT and 4x 1 GBIT connectivity.
    Maxed out it would be 1,5 TB ram, (12 + 3 backplane) x 18(?) TB hdd while the OS could be installed on HPE micro SD or raid1 usb stick

    On Pulseway, I used them to monitor about 20 machines, half of them windows desktop pc's, and I took their antivirus. One day they pushed an update to the antivirus, and all of the windows machines couldn't boot. I had to go to safe mode and remove the antivirus to solve the problem. That is when I dropped pulseway completely. This was about 4-5 years ago.

    The SLOG is completely overkill. Also a SLOG only helps when you have sync'ed writes like on databases or if you force it on your dataset or pool. However, that would be stupid performance wise. In general, your SLOG only needs to be as big as your system can receive synced writes at max inbound datarate for about a few seconds. Absolute max can be approximately via rule of thumb by "all total NICs speed times 10 seconds" or "SSD speed times 10 seconds" - whatever is smaller. My suggestion here would be 30-40 GB, limited by ssd speed, and the remaining storage on that drive should go to L2ARC, Speaking about that: Don't forget that you also need a decent amount of RAM for L2ARC indexing. A too big L2ARC require so much RAM that it limits the ARC capacity and in turn hurt your overall performance. Also: turn on persistent L2ARC. That is a nice feature of the latest OpenZFS 2.0 :)

      Came here to post exactly this. I work on large ZFS deployments, we use your exact "storage speed times 10 seconds" metric. From reporting, that's about 3-4x more than necessary, but also helps with flash longevity (wear leveling). For this system, 20 drives * 100MBps * 10 seconds = 20 GB. 2 TB is 100x too much.
      Definitely remember to check L2Arc persistence, big difference if you ever reboot the system. Check /sys/module/zfs/parameters/l2arc_rebuild_enabled is '1' for Enabled.
      For large and fast cache devices, you may want to tune l2arc_write_max and l2arc_write_boost or _l2arc_feed_min_ms_. The default is 8,388,608 (8MB) is the maximum write speed per interval for the the cache device (heavily influences how quickly it will be populated, or data updated). For a fast cache device, bump _max_ to about 1/20 of the device's speed (for the Sabrent in this video, max should be around 141557760) and bump _boost_ to somewhere in the range of _max_ to double _max_ (for the Sabrent in this video I would set boost to 283115520). You can also accomplish similar results by decreasing the minimum interval time in _l2arc_feed_min_ms_ from the default 200 (for the Sabrent in this video, maybe 10 or so).
      Make changes persistent by changing /etc/modprobe.d/zfs.conf. Only make changes if you know what you're doing. YMMV. Caveat emptor.
