Thanks again, Tom! We had Jax at Phoenix’s dock diving competition this weekend and he did great! Over the past 72 hours he’s been in close proximity to over 40 different dogs and dozens of people and not a single uncontrollable lash out at all! One small instance where he lashed out once but it was triggered by two other dogs going ballistic about 20’ from him but we brought him into heel and he snapped right out of it! A little over a week ago we wouldn’t have even been able to take him, thanks again!!!

Fantastic video! I am trying to train my two puppy Dachshunds 9 months and 1 year old. It has been a long winter with them. These videos have been beyond helpful in explaining every aspect of how to handle the behaviors that come up. I’d love to come up to train for 3 days with you guys! ❤
I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. And I’ve learned a lot. I have an reactive afghan hound and I have been on lots of courses (positive only), but none of the methods works. I live in Norway and most of the tools you’re using is illegal here, and all the dog trainers around here only train positive and tell me to just walk away with my dog whenever he reacts. They even think that using a normal collar is hurting the dog. Making me use a harness on my big, reactive dog. It gets really frustrating that the reactivity doesn’t improve with the positive only methods. I really love your work and I wished there were trainers like you around here.
with my dog due to not being able to afford an e collar I did the observe and wait to treat method. basically he only got treated for being calm and observing but not fixating. it also helps that I trained him to give eye contact periodically. if he deviated he got a leash check since he responds o leash pressure pretty well. nothing aginst the ecollar just sharing a glimmer of success that I had.
I've been dog sitting for a lady who is fostering an EXTREMELY dog aggressive pit bull. I think that I will try this on her, hopefully it will improve her behavior, she desperately needs training! Thanks for showing us these techniques!
Love to see a video on stopping just barking. My rescue will bark at something within what seems like a normal reaction to warn, like someone in our wooded area or even deer trying to get in fence. However then once the event should be over he will go on barking. He’s no longer barking as a warning, he just seems to bark not paying attention to anything in particular.
Great video, my shepherd is sweet and loves people, but reactive because he wants to just run up to people. Will be applying these tips, we also have the dogtra collar, great tool
I'm so disapointed that most of the trainers whithin my province (Canada) are anti correction/tools and are purely positive reinforcement and don't believe in holding accountable a dog. I haven't found a single trainer that will use those tools and support my dog and I in our training, they always wanna remove everything and put my reactive sensible dog on a harness. I don't understand why I gotta explain why my dog has an e-collar and 98% of the people think I abuse my dog by using that. Having an European Doberman that was bred in Poland from award winning and multi-titles lines, I cannot afford only positive and gotta let my dog knows that there is limits that can't be crossed. Yet, all the looks I get when out and about. I wish I was closer to you!
What a difference. I love how you explain things in human terms. I also see the owner changed her shows from flip flops to real shoes. ( it's a pet peeve of mine)
Agreed! Especially when you have a reactive dog who’s out of control. You as the handler need to have footing and traction to assure you can fully manage the situation. Flip flops are a good way to trip and fall while your dog takes off and attacks someone
So, e-collar might be good for very reactive dogs? I've been working on my Mals reactivity for almost a year now. She's definitely better, but I would definitely like a clearer signal than just leave it. Leave it works to lessen the reaction, but that's only to dogs/people/ vehicles that are pretty far away. Used to be lunging, snapping, barking, kinda like this dog. We've been working on exposure therapy, impulse control, and a few other things as well. Prong doesnt work and only heightens her reactivity due to misuse before I got her. She redirected every time she reacted. So I put that away and started using a slip lead. Still redirected but less. Through a lot of patience and going out daily, she no longer redirects, but reactivity is still an issue even though I do everything I can to prevent it.
ive had luck using a front fitting harness and teaching my dog to look at me on walks and threshold training. as for barking out the window I first go see whats up and then i tell him "shhh!" with this i just told him the command when he was calm and quiet already then praised him for it. after a bit he understood what it meant. with reactivity sometimes i have to correct him by turning him away from the other dog. prongs are no the best on terriers since they are made to rev the dog up. look up mark dubose and stonnie dennis on here...both of them have some good tips for dealing with difficult dogs.
Once my dog sees another dog on the street the E collar goes out the window. He doesnt even feel it. He is 100% freaking out pulling and screaming super high pitched. He was attacked as a puppy then later on when he was two. Since then he can no longer go to the dogs parks. He cant even see a puppy on a walk cuz he freaks out. Hes a 75lbs english bull terrier, but he is even terrified of puppies and chihuahuas now.
You are using the e collar wrong. You have to see the other dog first and watch your dogs bodylanguage and correct it at the right time, that's before he's at that point were the e collar can't work (meaning, when it already leashes out, you have missed the timing to give the correction). If he is at that point and you use the e collar you are making your dog think, that the dog he sees is causing him pain, so the behaviour keeps getting worse.
Thank you so much for your videos, your techniques are very similar to my trainer’s and are of great help to me as additional information/perspective while working with my dog Olive, a bouvier. Now, question for you. Is there a benefit to using the plastic pinch as opposed to the traditional Herm Sprenger training collar?
Theirs so many comments I can find were you get that collar, my dog when she sees somebody she likes takes me for a ride she will stand on her two feet and pull with her weight and chest forward, she's taking me down a few times, and it's not even winter yet. , she has a lot of amazing qualities and loved to save people, but the breeder said she's to reactive. I kept her from not being put down she's 3. I hope it helps, she learns new tricks easy but won't stop pulling when she sees something or someone she likes, I'm not prepared all the time and it feels like she's pulling my shoulder out of my socket, when that happens
This video and your podcast are awesome! I have a 6 month old puppy and this is really helpful!! What are your thoughts on prong collars that are metal? Do they hurt the dog? This is all they sell at petsmart in Canada. Also wondering if shock collars are different than your vibration e collar/ less humane . Thanks :)
Love your videos! I am using a Herm Springer prong for my reactive dog (Steve). Is the plastic prong used here more for flat coated dogs or is it less pressure on the neck?
Hello! Our dog is so great on the leash and outside the home but absolutely loses his shit when someone comes to the door or enters the home. Do you have any videos on specifically reactively when entering the home? He has an e collar but he really ignores it during this specific occurrence. Thanks in advance, absolutely love your videos!
Do you have to continue using a prong or pinch collar? My dogs did well with a prong collar, but reverted right back to their old habits when I put a flat collar on them.
It is what you allow. You have to be firm. Better to be proactive than reactive. You must not tolerate bad behavior and squash it dead set before they become a power house.
Great video! I had just finished yelling at my Yorkie mix for barking at top pitch through the window at another dog. Unless I close the blinds, he does this all day. And we walk very early in the am to avoid all other dogs. When there is another dog walking, I try to hide him behind a car tire or brick mailbox so he can’t see the other dog. He is pulling my 73 yr old arthritic hand too hard and I’ve been thinking of getting him another home. I reduced him 3 yrs ago from a shelter. They think he was about 9 then. So 11 now, and his nurturing was right before I rescued him. He may have been a street dog before. Where do I start?
It might be a good idea to work on engagement training with your yorkie inside, and start working on obedience inside as well. That way when things are about to go crazy in the real world. You can use obedience to redirect your dogs attention back onto you. The answer isn’t always so black and white though, it’s gonna take a while to get him to a level where you can walk him through other dogs. Also I’m sorry about your hand, maybe it’d be a good idea to also look into professional help?
Great job!!! so for an 80 pound lab who has leash reactivity would you also use this collar? Do you like these better than prongs? If yes why? And I guess you would use a large star mark?
My 5 year old female GSD is extremely fearful, very reactive, and dog aggressive (adopted her 7 months ago from the shelter). I've heard that using e-collars on dogs with fear based reactivity is not appropriate. Is this true? Will be consulting with a local trainer soon. I want to make sure that I have as much accurate information, and know what to look for, regarding the trainer, as possible in order to know if he's someone I can feel comfortable working with. I'm going to need more training than Lucy.
Well I have to try this. We have had our dog for a year now and he is soon 3 years old. He has gotten better with people but not at all with dogs. I really hope this can work. What I know of, in Denmark we only have trainers who use positive reinforcement. That's great for some things but with other dogs... it seems hopeless.
Is the prong collar more effective than the pinch collar you recommended, the one you use with your pup? My mastiff is over 70 lbs at 4 months and he is well trained in most circumstances but sometimes he sees another dog and his training goes out the window. Is 4.5 months too young to start e collar training with a pup? He is in dog training 3x a week and i work with him 2-4 hrs a day at home, but my trainer doesn’t do e collar, and he knows his commands but if he gets a trigger, the prong had zero effect and I’m a very small female.
You are an amazing dog trainer! How can I train my 5 month Aussie not to be scared of other dogs and people? I take him out everyday to social ize him but nothing seems to work. I'm trying also to train him to do better on the leash. I have a prong collar and the e collar comes in next week, I reward him for his good behavior but only have 1 hand so it makes things a bit harder. Can you give me any pointers on what I can do for Auggie, TYIA
Do you have any videos on how to stop regression? My dog's regression is bad and has been ongoing for over a year. One moment he is trained and does well, considering and listens, and the next minute he gets 'extra' affection, outing, etc., it's back to day one of training. Help? TYIA.
Hi Tom, is it possible to send an correction collar to holland ? E collar I would need I got an stafford mix rescue dog I can't get trainer in Holland for her it's stafford mix so ' fight dog' it's not aloud In groups and honestly the trainers here won't work. I had succes watching ours like days ours of you're videos ,I do have good experience with scared dogs . But this staffie mix is from Italy she's getting worse even with slip leash. I can't or im not aloud to use the e collor here . I don't know if I can contact you privately about this ?? I'm honest I know I'm here last chance and I'd like to explain why I don't have ability to get help . But my dog I got as last chance. If I don't get her to behave outside on walks she will be killed and taken from me .please let me know we're I could explain my situation ❤. It's for the dog now or get taken. 😢Holland sucks
Does the plastic pinch collar work well with very thick coated dogs? I have an extremely stubborn Great Pyrenees/German Shepard mix. I have had some small success with the Dogtra e-collar and currently use a regular metal link pinch collar. I feel it works pretty well. sometimes because of the hair, the e-collar doesn't connect.
Tom I have a question. My dog is not aggressive against me what soever, but when he sees other dogs he gets aggressive and barks at them and tries to go at them, but what I noticed ALOT is that the other dogs approach him, or bark at him first and my dog simply doesnt back down. When this happens for example I was just outside the dog park, I knew I wouldn't take him inside because there were other dogs there but the group of dogs came to the fence and starting growling at my dog and my dog did the same back. I put my dog in the sitting position as he was barking and I got angry and said YOU are going to have to get used to it, the dogs went back and forth and my dog now with me again tried pulling me very hard everywhere so he can pee. As he was pulling me very hard and hurting my arms I took him and sweeped him in a controlled manner ignorer to dominate him and let him know that what he is doing is NOT okay. every time I could calm him down I would say up and he would continue to drag me around I was outside the dog park this whole time. The group of dogs came and the ladies who own them came after them after their own dogs didnt listen to them when they said come, then the group of ladies started saying derogatory remarks to me while I payed NO attention to them whatsoever they said poor dog theres training for this kind of behavior its YOUR fault he is aggressive you are making him aggressive you know nothing about dogs. My dog is an island dog that was taking off the streets by me ZERO manners, he's a loving dog but only to me. but he drags me around my question is this if I was outside the fence on school property and these people started calling me derogatory names while their OWN dogs were barking at my dog causing my dog to bark back did they harass me and do wrong and assume that I didnt know what I was doing. My dog is a feral dog from an island he has no manners, I try EVERYTHING to make him listen but he is unneutered and he is very dog aggressive but doesnt necessarily attack them he just wants to be dominant. But what I see most times is OTHER dogs start first because they see my dog is not scared or cowering by them.
The collar you have to get from amazon... the Plastic Collar .......is it safe to use it on an all most working line gsd that has some really bad manners almost 5months in another week and a half?
We have a four year old Cane Corso. She is highly reactive and seems to get worse with age not calmer. My husband recently broke his shoulder in a motorcycle accident and can't walk her right now. I have a fused neck and spine and have had my muscles and ligaments torn by this dog when I walked her. I seem more stern with her (I don't scream I just use a very firm voice) and she used to do better for me. We are supposed to go camping soon and I am terrified of this dog and having to walk her in the narrow roadways of the parks. Do I need to buy both of these collars to start this training? Any suggestions?
Hey Tom, I have a rottweiler of about 9 months and she's amazing and gentle around family but reactive to people when on walks. I have her on a slip lead and when I try and correct the behavior I have no response. In my country South Africa prong and e-collars are illegal , do you have any advice on how to overcome this?
He looks a lot like my Zelda, except my Zelda has those lab ears. That's the problem with Zelda. She READS BIG SCARY ATTACK DOG, and she loves sprinting up to people and then wait for pets. She's a very special girl. Her opening move at the shelter when I brought Trapper with me, was to eat another dog's poop. Not Trapper's, another shelter dog. Trapper had an equally bad first impression, he defiantly peed when I was in the meeting area with him. That's when I knew he was perfect for me. Also since he wasn't a reactionary dog during the walk around the kennels. Zelda wasn't a crazy dog when I met her, she was more excited but respectful. Tail wagged and showed signs of curiosity. I got her since she looked cool, same with Trapper. LOL... They were both 100% IMPULSE BUYS, did everything you shouldn't do when adopting, but got two amazing dogs.
I don't know why my dogs became reactive with age. Trapper was RARELY reactive to other dogs, like EXTREMELY RARE. I remember the first time he was, I was at the grocery store and there was a rottweiler doing guard dog things in a shop yard. Trapper did not like that dog. THEN I GOT ZELDA, who was cool for the first year, but recently has been reactive to everything. And Trapper the now 6yr old (foxhound/catahoula) has adopted Zelda's (2 year old dutch/mal/lab) bad behavior. Zelda's bad for almost any dogs. I mean she wants to play with them, Trapper will only speak up if it's a "PROTECTION BREED" (Pits, germans, etc). BUT Zelda and Trapper have now been reacting to elderly, homeless and minorities. Then the other day, I was driving with my dogs in the car, and a father was going for a walk with his downs syndrome 5yr old, and the kid saw Zelda in the car and excitedly exclaimed "DOG!", and she just went off on the poor kid. In an oddly aggressive barking manner. More so than she does for the three groups I mentioned. That was and has been the only time she's really disappointed me. Since she's normally a sweet girl. She plays with the kids in the neighborhood. I feel like Trapper became more reactive with age since he's being more protective of Zelda (whom he broke her leg three weeks into owning her... LOL... yikes, both are shelter pups, both abandoned at 6m; trapper was 1yr old when I got him, Zelda 8m) and me. I tell him, I don't really need protection, since I am quite capable even for a short guy, and I'm strapped to the nines in a very self-defense friendly state.
Don't do videos like this. They are extremely good, and this is now common knowledge, yes, but Zak George and similar fruits will have a fit. 😂😂😂 On a serious note: thank you for the good content!!!
Hey Tom, One of the things I'm having a TON of trouble finding is what to do about a dog who has fearful aggression specifically in the home. My one year old rottweiler shepherd mix is completely fine meeting people outside of the house (on leash, in bars, their homes, etc.) but the minute we're in the house he barks, lunges, hides behind me, expresses his anal glands... this is most intense around men and young children, and I've been doing a ton of research around what to do and it's gotten better, but it still makes me nervous sometimes to have people in my home, especially kids. I would love to see your take on what to do to help him relax. I hate the idea of having to shut him away any time I have guests over, but I don't want to risk his barking and lunging escalating either!
Tom, I find your videos very helpful, and am grateful for the help. However, I find the background music in this one nothing more than a somewhat irritating distraction. It adds nothing to the lesson. Thank you for your understanding
The best thing that I did for my dog is chuck all things dog training in the bin and go back to my “old ways”, taking to heart and following advice from Mark Dubose and this guy (Robert): ua-cam.com/video/6fYdHUnSl4w/v-deo.htmlsi=89EVuGgfmP4LWKpH
I have watched a buncha vids. I don't get it I have never had a dog act like any of them in the videos. From my grandpa's hounds to my huskies. No create training. No obedience. The only issues I've ever had is how they love to find dead animals and bring them to me. They run around the property with no leash and never run off. They stay right next to me at all times, they both go out fishing with me on the boat and never have any issues.I Don't get how dogs come to behave like this l.
So why wouldn’t you address the issue as to leash pressure first? That’s what’s causing the reactivity. She is obviously not leading this dog consistently., and my worry is that she’ll take this direction as not on her, and this tool by itself solves the issue. The only time I’ve ever used Electric stimulation collars ( E collar is an Elizabethan collar) is when I’ve been out with my buddies dogs retrieving fowl. He doesn’t even have batteries in the remote., they became collar wise, and follow instruction. Martingale and prong should be sufficient added with your advice you gave her as to directives.
As a professional, You shouldn't assume that every one of your viewers appreciate your use of profanity. You might want to substitute "stuff" instead of "s h i t"

Where did you order it from? I found the e collar but not that one
As a fellow dog trainer who went to the Tom Rose school. You are hands down the best on UA-cam.
Good boi Jax! 💖 He is a fast learner, that was awesome to see!

Thanks! :)
Cute Baby Burly! 🎉
Great video, my shepherd is sweet and loves people, but reactive because he wants to just run up to people. Will be applying these tips, we also have the dogtra collar, great tool
Wonderful! In your videos I found what I have been missing in dog training. Thanks!
Sounds like Canada
i’m in canada! windsor ontario!
Where in Canada are you?
I know a great trainer who works in Vancouver using balanced training same as Tom does
@@annaprotsenkooo thank you for the help, but sadly I'm EAST :(
Where are you on the east? There's a lot of balanced trainers here including myself. Purely Positive are just very vocal because all they do is talk.
That was a good session … I really like that plastic pinch colour … didn’t know they existed.
Thank you Tom and team🙏
Thank you, I will try it with my rothie🥰
Wow absolutely incredible.
What a difference. I love how you explain things in human terms. I also see the owner changed her shows from flip flops to real shoes. ( it's a pet peeve of mine)
Toes are really quite useless in some countries.
I would watch this video again.
ive had luck using a front fitting harness and teaching my dog to look at me on walks and threshold training. as for barking out the window I first go see whats up and then i tell him "shhh!" with this i just told him the command when he was calm and quiet already then praised him for it. after a bit he understood what it meant. with reactivity sometimes i have to correct him by turning him away from the other dog. prongs are no the best on terriers since they are made to rev the dog up. look up mark dubose and stonnie dennis on here...both of them have some good tips for dealing with difficult dogs.
oops wrong person but yeah look up those 2 people
Once my dog sees another dog on the street the E collar goes out the window.
Thank you for the information on dog parks.
Man bureigh is a pro
Handsome dog.
Great video much learning helps to train my doggie
The best 👍
Same here but I assume that's why I need to use a cue with it
My question is how would you correct your dogs fear aggression and lunging at you (the owner) ?
*rescued, not reduced
And neutered, not nurturing
It might be a good idea to work on engagement training with your yorkie inside, and start working on obedience inside as well. That way when things are about to go crazy in the real world. You can use obedience to redirect your dogs attention back onto you.
The answer isn’t always so black and white though, it’s gonna take a while to get him to a level where you can walk him through other dogs. Also I’m sorry about your hand, maybe it’d be a good idea to also look into professional help?
@@47los19 Thank you.
look up mark dubose and stonnie dennis they have good dog training advice.
Great job!!! so for an 80 pound lab who has leash reactivity would you also use this collar? Do you like these better than prongs? If yes why?
And I guess you would use a large star mark?
7:07 mark 👏👏
Great video.
Would the training be the same for a dog that's super social? Mine gets way too excited to see other dogs.
Working with my new 3mo old puppy, what do you use to pay them when their food/kibble isn’t high value enough to them?
Do you have any videos on how to stop regression? My dog's regression is bad and has been ongoing for over a year. One moment he is trained and does well, considering and listens, and the next minute he gets 'extra' affection, outing, etc., it's back to day one of training. Help? TYIA.
On his page here lot of great videos
Hi Tom, is it possible to send an correction collar to holland ? E collar I would need
I got an stafford mix rescue dog I can't get trainer in Holland for her it's stafford mix so ' fight dog' it's not aloud In groups and honestly the trainers here won't work.
May i ask what the black collar is called on Burleigh ?
Does the plastic pinch collar work well with very thick coated dogs? I have an extremely stubborn Great Pyrenees/German Shepard mix. I have had some small success with the Dogtra e-collar and currently use a regular metal link pinch collar. I feel it works pretty well. sometimes because of the hair, the e-collar doesn't connect.
SportDog ecollar has an option to swap out the regular length prongs for extra long prongs, especially for thick coated-dogs.
Would a slip-leash work the same way?
What’s your favorite e collar?
Do you not use herm sprenger anymore? I've noticed you using more of the starmark collars.
Why are some utterances of shit getting bleeped, but others aren't? It's so weird, and, I dunno why, but I find that hilarious.
How often do you restock your online store?
Hey Tom, I have a rottweiler of about 9 months and she's amazing and gentle around family but reactive to people when on walks. I have her on a slip lead and when I try and correct the behavior I have no response. In my country South Africa prong and e-collars are illegal , do you have any advice on how to overcome this?
Can anyone tell what trainers is Tom wearing, I really want to buy a pair.
Love my boerboel too
He looks a lot like my Zelda, except my Zelda has those lab ears.
Been seeing this plastic pinch collar more than the slip lead lately, is this a better option now?
It’s safer for larger dogs for sure
My dog is very reactive, my trainer tried distance training but unfortunately without success, unfortunately E-collars are banned in Germany 😢
Have someone in America order one for you & ship it to you. That’s ridiculous to ban a tool that helps dogs 😑
Ok
👍👍👍
On a serious note: thank you for the good content!!!
Hey Tom,
One of the things I'm having a TON of trouble finding is what to do about a dog who has fearful aggression specifically in the home.
IS IT WRONG TO USE THE VIBRATION FOR TRAINING
I'm wondering this as well, as I thought the vibration was more intense than the "pulse."
Tom, I find your videos very helpful, and am grateful for the help. However, I find the background music in this one nothing more than a somewhat irritating distraction. It adds nothing to the lesson. Thank you for your understanding
When you coming to Montreal bud
I've tried the e collar my dogs crazy she actually bit me
Not trying to be rude here. Does this dog have some kind of digestive disorder? This can be common in Shepherds. He looks underweight to me.
Mine ignores the vibration completely 😩
What collar do you have?
@@tomdavisofficial yours!
CAN I USE THE VIBRATOR ALL THE TIME OR DO I USE THE ECOLLAR
What
Many ecollars have two basic modes. One mode is vibrate and the other is electronic stimulation. Here Tom is using the vibration mode.
What kind of dog is this
We got him as a puppy from a rescue and were told Belgian Malinois however we think he may be mixed with Dutch and German Shepherd
Helo
The best thing that I did for my dog is chuck all things dog training in the bin and go back to my “old ways”, taking to heart and following advice from Mark Dubose and this guy (Robert): ua-cam.com/video/6fYdHUnSl4w/v-deo.htmlsi=89EVuGgfmP4LWKpH
I got a 180 pound corso that's the same way. Just mew people bad nerves scared 😢

That plastic starmark one did nothing for my dog I through it out..
More abidence isthe ansewer thanks
I have too lushiss to halp me with my dog
It was.
Why are black shepards so spicy 🌶️ watching to help mine. He the bestest boy but thinks he needs to throw down his life for us around other dogs
Wow happy tears at the end 🖤
I’m gonna get my frenchie this collar, the positive reinforcement doesn’t seem to be working. Hopefully this helps. I’ll give y’all an update.
You can’t use positive reinforcement to stop behaviors. Thats for encouraging behaviors
