Alsooo, a lot of people just sit at a bus stops without the intention of riding which is so annoying and waste our time because we have to check and see if they need a ride.

I think I mentioned this before, but another reason people might get passed up by the bus is because that bus isn’t for that route, or even with that authority. I had numerous people tossing their hands up in the air mad at me because I passed them up at a city bus stop, and I drive a Greyhound 😂.

People miss their Greyhound because they don't play attention. I make sure that I get my Greyhound bus because I spent money to catch it and I ask questions just to be on the safe side. I miss the Greyhound one time because I felt asleep in Indianapolis Greyhound station heading back to Chicago and miss it so I had to pay $20 to redo my ticket to another time which was my fault for not setting my alert time.

Also, on high-frequency routes, a driver might pass by without picking up passengers because another bus that is emptier is right behind it and is able to take on more passengers, and passing by prevents bus bunching.

The passengers in Detroit if you holding them up, they would get off and push that rude passenger out of the way so the bus driver could pull off. Most of the passengers in Ann Arbor MI are respectful to their bus drivers, just a few rude passenger but most of them would tell their driver thank you.

People should also learn to read the outside sign on the front of the bus, on the door side of the bus, and sometimes in the rear of the bus. When training new drivers, our signs specifically say "TRAINING BUS" and training buses do not pick up passengers.

Great video and I've got a story about someone who was banned by an agency, yet he is still mad at the fact he gets passed up, even though he knows the reason why. My local agency is in Orlando Florida, the agency is called Lynx. The guy caused so many problems, including taking photos at unauthorized areas, causing a ruckus on the bus or at bus stops. He was once at a transfer stop at one of the malls in Orlando and he actually threw a cup at a supervisor's car. The bus drivers started passing him up and finally, a friend of mine went to the agency and told them about this guy, whose name is Carlos or Charlie. They served the guy papers that he was banned for life from the agency. He isn't allowed to be within a few hundred feet from Lynx employees, Lynx property, Lynx vehicles, and even the many shuttle buses that are not owned by Lynx, basically he got banned from riding any bus within Lynx's service area (which is enormous as it covers several counties). They also sent copies of the letter to agencies around the state, including the DOT about him. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you have to be a real mental case to get banned by a place in Orlando of all cities. I won't discuss the circumstances of why or how I knew him, but let's just say our "friendship" didn't last long, even after I gave him a second chance.

Another reason to pass up a person is if they are clearly trying to board with hazardous or unsafe items. For example, gasoline canisters, car batteries, or weapons. Things like portable generators or gasoline mopeds, those aren't coming on my bus under any circumstance. It’s often worse to stop and open the door to explain that you cannot serve this person with these items, because once the door is open, they will often attempt to board no matter what you say, and then you have the problem of having to get this person and the hazardous item off the bus, a much harder situation. Better to pass up than set up such a confrontation. Always a judgement call, and often best as a operator to cover your bases and call the controllers and state for the record, "I passed up the passenger with the marked radiation sources and the welding torch at X and Y streets."

  • @metromaster2010

There is also the case where the angered passenger says that they were passed up, but that is not the case. It happens often when the driver is pulling out of the stop, the late passenger runs up and tries to get the driver to stop. This is, of course impossible. The driver simply doesn't see him/her because he is looking at the left side rear view mirror to re-enter the traffic flow

Unfortunately sometimes it can also be due to poorly marked bus stops. Especially at night. When we had MTA Long Island Bus they'd have reflective paint on the bus stop curb and the bus stop pole. But since it became NICE Bus that is gone, so I've had some drivers tell me I should hold my phone up so they can see the light from it.

  • @patrickrichmond9896
    @patrickrichmond9896 10 місяців тому +3

This is a good video about bus information. There are a host of reasons why passengers end up being passed up at the bus stop. Some people will stare at their phone on purpose until the last minute so that way they can get the driver in trouble. At night, it is also hard for drivers to see the passengers because when the light are on, there is glare painted all over the windshield and is hard for the driver to see you. It is also a rule that when the bus is not in service, many drivers are instructed not to pick up anyone. When a bus driver is about to put his or her bus away, most of the time you will see the "Not in Service" sign up.

Great video. As a bus operator myself, a common one in my town not mentioned in this video is that some bus stops are seasonal. I drive in a college town so some of our stops are not serviced in the summer. Some drivers suck as myself will still stop and tell passengers something like, "I'll pick you up here today as a one time thing but just for your information this stop is not active during the summer.". Then there are some drivers who will just drive past someone at an inactive stop. But that is one I see occur in my town from time to time.

There's quite a lot of pass ups on the Great North Road in Newcastle, England. On the GNR, There is a mix of 'Express' (X9, X10, X11, X14, X15, X18, X20) and 'Local' Services (Q3, 43, 44, 45) and the express services can only stop at 4 stops Which are Glamis Avenue, Regent Centre Metro, Gosforth High Street and Newcastle Haymarket. The Local services observe all stops between Glamis Road and Haymarket. A lot of people are confused by this despite all of the timetable displays only saying Q3, 43, 44, 45.

I'm from the uk and I like to see how other services run that have similar numbers I'm used to. For instance you use the X10 as an example. The X10 that I know of (and I'm aware there are more with the same number in other parts of the UK) runs from Birmingham to Merry Hill which runs every 20 minutes with an extension to Goral wood which runs hourly. The X also states it is limited stop which I believe is between Quinton and Birmingham City Centre part of it's route. I have known people get confused or try to get onto the X10 at a stop it doesn't stop at.
For instance I drive the 9 Birmingham to Stourbridge which stops at every stop and because the route is very similar between Quinton and Birmingham City Centre I've had people ask me why the X10 didn't stop at a stop that has the 9 and 126 stop at it.
Our X8 is also the same as the X10 along the Quinton to City Centre stretch.

In the Milwaukee County Transit System sometimes extra buses are put on some routes during Summerfest. I was trying to get on Route 15 to get to work downtown during Summerfest. I was trying to get on at northbound stops on Port Washington Road alongside Bayshore Town Center, but Route 15 buses kept passing me. I finally walked to the last stop -- the layover stop. There I was able to get on.
I soon learned why there were so many other buses for Route 15. At many stops large numbers of people were getting on. By the time the bus reached Locust Street, there was no more room whatsoever for anyone to get on. The bus was filled to more than official capacity. I ended up getting off a stop or two after the one I wanted to get off because others had to tell the driver I needed to get off.
The Route 15 buses passing me were "helper buses" running between the official end of the route and near the stops closest to the Summerfest grounds. NOTE for MCTS riders reading this. This was before the Green Line express route was started.
Too bad MCTS has for the most part discontinued the special Summerfest Freeway Flyers from the park and ride lots. Those downtown Summerfest shuttles and Summerfest Freeway Flyers were so heavily ridden that with the slightly higher fares, they had to come the closest to actually breaking even at the fare box. For those who do not know of Summerfest, it's a major annual music festival held at the lakefront each late June/early July.

Excellent video. Just want to add if you are approaching ie walking to a bus stop and the bus has already stopped, unloaded, loaded and pulled away from the bus stop. DO NOT JUMP in the STREET attempting to wave down or stop us. Not only will you CATCH the bus. No pun intended but you will get injured or possibly kill yourself. Doing this may cause the bus driver to swerve and possibly cause an accident. Just had this happen to me on Thursday night the July 27th, 2023. I want to pick people up but as a passenger it is your responsibility to safely be at the stop before the bus arrives. People like to hide under trees for shade when it is 80-102 degrees Fahrenheit. We try our best to stop and pickup passengers it’s our job, but if you cause a scene or unsafe situation chances are you will be passed.

Another reason: You aren't at a bus stop for the bus that just passed by you.
This can take several forms. Here are a few example scenarios:
    1. You are waiting at a transit center's bay #6 for a bus heading north that is Route 566 and the bus that just passed by you is Route 556 (note the slight difference in number) which heads south and therefore serviced bay #1 within that same transit center. In other words, the bus you are angrily assuming passed you up wasn't actually the route you were hoping to ride. It came from a completely different origin terminal, was going to a completely different destination, and therefore almost certainly uses completely different roads in between. This confusion can be avoided by reading the signs on the bus. In addition to the route numbers the buses usually have their destination spelled out.
On a related note, I have experienced shared stops where basically EVERY single person frantically running for the bus never read (nor listened to) the route/destination label on the bus, just panickly assuming the bus they were running towards was their bus, and then the bus driver who had patiently waited for them at that stop gets angrily screamed at further down the road (when they turn left instead of right) for somehow having "tricked" that previously panicked runner by somehow "pretending" to have been that other bus route which uses that same stop. Again, the confusion can be avoided by taking note of what the bus's signs say its route is.
    2. You are waiting at a stop that is labelled for Route 225 (which turns right at that corner you are standing at, in order to head north) while the Route 255 which you had wanted to catch (which turns left at that same traffic light to head south) services a different stop placed slightly further up or down the road so that the driver can safely get in that lefthand turn lane for the traffic light. In other words, you are not actually standing at a stop for the route that you want. One clue that this may be what happened is if you have to walk across one or more lanes of traffic to stand in the middle of a lane of traffic to yell at the bus driver who is stopped at that red light in a lefthand lane; i.e. you're standing in front of other vehicles yelling at the bus for not picking you up at a stop DIRECTLY behind your back. This can be avoided by reading the sign at the bus zone you are waiting at. In addition to the route numbers, the signs usually spell out the destination of each listed route for that specific stop.
    3. You are standing at a stop labelled for the route you want but it is one used for when the bus goes in the opposite direction. This usually happens when a bus loops thru the same transit center (or park and ride or similar) going both directions, but picks up at one section of curb when heading north and a different stop when heading south. Or east versus west. However, it can ALSO happen if a temporary reroute (such as when a road gets closed for construction) forces a bus to temporarily double back thru a tiny stretch of road despite needing to go the opposite direction very soon than the buses that actually service that stop. PLUS, it can happen if a bus is on its final run with a final stop different than usual (for example, the final run only goes half the normal route) and needs to turn down a different road that's opposite its normal direction in order to finish in the direction of the bus yard.
This confusion can be avoided by reading the destination spelled out on the bus. Not just the route number, but also the DESTINATION of that specific bus.
    4. You aren't at a bus stop. Buses aren't like taxis or rideshares. In most places, they don't stop to pick up people waving them down on any old stretch of road. This scenario can be avoided by waiting for buses at a bus stop instead.

We have stops where 20 different buses use them. They have to get off the PHONE and hail the bus they need . Drivers cant read minds and make themselves visible instead of standing where you cant be seen. Every state in Australia requires that you hail your bus exept backward Victoria. Certain companies try to put the blame on the drivers for this. They wonder why they cant get drivers! Impossible to read minds and stop at every stop for nothing. Companies say stop and ask, i said ok put an extra hour on the trip. Had big arguments about the companies stupidity. They know dam well what happens.

I’m in a wheelchair and never had a problem with busses or a bus driver… except the one driver in my small city that told me twice my chair isn’t an outdoor chair. She was just mad it doesn’t have tie down points and she had to go pretty much under my chair to hook it up. When I went to Quebec City that was the worst. There they don’t tie down wheelchairs at all for some reason. And the driver kept going pass the stop I wanted even tho I got the button that tells them to let the ramp out at the stop coming up. Sometimes I would be trying to get to the front to get off quick and hoping the bus driver physically sees me. Just for him to keep going while my breaks are off and I have to quickly grab onto something

@@NuFlyer83 Happens more often than you think. You're just a few feet away from the stop, you see that nobody is at the stop, you begin accelerating be you figure that you don't need to serve that stop and then the stop request bell rings. If I can't safely pull into a stop after you put in a late stop request, you're going to the next stop.

Nice content Keywan👍🏾. I would be interested in a “bus driver’s essentials” video where you share the items you use a driver. I imagine with years of experience, you probably use particular sunglasses, lumbar support seating, and other things people wouldn’t think about. Now with content creation, I see people even including Amazon links in their description boxes so that they could earn commission for the items they mention if people watching decided to purchase the items.

Once a bus, driver did the exact same thing you were talking about. I was about to miss a speeding bus. Keep in mind I was there on time, but since the bus with speeding, the real time departure was inaccurate, so there I am crossing the street waving my arms as to say wait bus driver just wait 10 seconds for me to get on the bus but it’s clear the driver said nope, cause it sped right past me could’ve just been me being mad, but I feel like that was the type of situation where the bus driver passed me with a big old smile on his face saying “ ha ha loser think he’s gonna make the bus”

Always be early to a stop, In my town the official time is still the wrist watch on the driver's arm. And the driver is allowed to have one minute of error in their watch. They must check/adjust their watch every day against the station clock (which also can have a minute of error) before they walk out. Add in the error in your watch, you missed the bus by seconds.

Another reason to pass a stop (allowed by Metro Tasmania) is if the passenger looks like they are on the nose, or would otherwise cause significant discomfort to other passengers, then drivers are allowed to drive by. Also applies to people trying to take "pets" on the service.
Some companies have a policy of "hail/signal driver" for their stops. Buses need around 50 metres stopping distance when travelling at 50 km/h, so they need a decent amount of warning. Bus drivers are unable to mind read in these circumstances, so standing at the stop looking at the driver is not a clear signal for them to stop.

Ok, I'll add one, because that person STINKS! I first started driving at County Connection in Concord, CA. We had a lady who nevet bathed or changed her clothes for that matter. Her feet were purple and swollen, her clothes would be become threadbare and you'd see more than you wanted too. Anyway, we'd try to avoid her at all costs. She took to hiding in bushes and jumping out when the bus came. Some operators would refuse her rides because her smell made them ill.

Bus driver here. I will pass you up if:
-You are asleep at the stop
-You are drinking alcohol at the stop
-You’re acting crazy at the stop
-You’re far from the stop and not making a good effort to make it quickly.
-You’re a well known trouble maker
-You try to run from the other side of the street after you were waiting at the stop for the other direction. I know you ain’t going anywhere
-You’re standing at a stop that isn’t mine
I’ve had passengers get out and fuck up people that stand in front of the bus. I’m being paid by the hour so I’ll sit as long as it takes.

I like the drivers of busses around I think why they drive pass through request stops as nobody put arm out no body what that one as that is for many more busses if doors close when leave then throw bag to stop can't they can't indicate means they must move for cars behind I think😮😅😊
