Start the Downswing Like This ↘️ and Crush the Ball!

- The start of the downswing is a topic that gets a lot of attention. Yet there seems to be a lot of confusion about exactly what starts the downswing.
Legs? Knees? Hips? Arms? Torso?
The truth is, like so many things in the golf swing, it depends. But moving your weight towards the target in the early downswing is a trait demonstrated by the best ball strikers in the world.
Specifically, the movement of the lead shoulder and lead knee at the start of the downswing is a movement that can literally make or break your ball striking.
This video will discuss this motion from the top of the backswing into the early downswing, and well as a drill and some FEELS you can apply to help you develop this skill in your own swing.

This is GOLD! Anyone who does this as you say will transform their ball striking to such a degree they will be shocked. This fixed my upper center that I tended to allow to fall back in the downswing. Thanks Rob!
@@golftecasia You got that right. Unfortunately, I can still overcook it!
I play golf for 20 years always with problems in take away and backswing. With your explanation just now I understand the cause of the estructural problem in my swing. I appreciate very much your instruction. Now I feel my swing like FRED COUPLES
This video has helped me heaps. I was trying to stay down but not moving forward and "down" enough, then lifting up as you mentioned, so would hit thick. Im really enjoying my swing now even helped with my 3W....much straighter and controlled.
Thanks from Australia...
Rob, I only discovered your channel earlier this week and having watched several videos on wrists (which was a complete mind bend for me having had many lessons over the years that never pointed out my excessive cupping!) I have been to the range and whilst it still feels alien to me I have already seen a dramatic improvement in the consistency of my iron strikes. I will watch your back catalogue to see where else I can improve but based on the wrist videos alone you are already a cut above a lot of the others on here. Thank you very very much
Rob, this is way underrated and is captured in your prop drill (or crush the can). I've come to appreciate that this move is essential to then properly tuck the hips. Absent some down, there isn't any up! 🤨
Excellent lesson. I sometimes lack the left side extension, especially with wedge shots. And just like you pointed out… it results in deep divots.
Thank you. Makes a lot of sense!
Awesome video Rob! I needed this.
Excellent video Rob. Can’t wait to try it. Thanks.
Started experimenting with this technique about a week before seeing this video. Nice to know I was on the right track. Keep um coming. I’am your newest student. At 77 you’re never to old to learn something new.
Excellent video Rob on how to start the downswing! I've been working on this very thing and where my focus should be in relationship to the ball. I've been trying to transfer my focus from the back of the ball to the front of it. Now I can work on the lead shoulder and knee! Good Job Rob!!!
Excellent video, thank you Rob!
Love it, Rob! Going to try this over the weekend. Hope all is well with you and your team in Singapore.
Honestly I have been missing this in my swing forever. Great video. Glad I found ya. New subscriber
So good Rob. “Down & forward / up & back”. So helpful. Compression! Thanks for teaching.
Wonderful! Thank you for posting this!
exactly what i need. great video
Thank you Rob 😌🙏👍
Absolutely amazing tips.... Hands down the best ive heard in a while
Excellent! Thank you ...
Brilliant this explains some issues I been having lately I will try the drill
Nicely explained! Thank you sir
Excellent advice and thanks
Insightful, clear and helpful. You are a very good teacher! Many thanks.
Excellent.. Thank you
Excellent explanation and drill. Cheers.
Hi Rob, thank you for this great video. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for to initiate the downswing. I also used your right arm drill to keep my right arm more flexed and in front verses extending towards the ball losing my wrist angles and inconsistent ball striking.I was amazed at how much more solid I was making contact with the ball, and my ball flight was much more consistent.Thank you for Breaking down the mechanics of the swing so the average Joe can understand and implement them in their swings Great job!
Hi Rob- Every, every time theseb sessions add something I need to visualize where my body is going. Use many of these nuggets when I go to the gym and they have large mirrors that enable me to practice the move before I even attempt to strike the ball. Thanks as always. Stay safe-Russ
Gold keeps coming Boss ✨️ 💛
The best video of golf in YOU TUBE.
Excellent video Rob....greetings from Chilliwack , BC.
Hi there Rob... weirdest thing, really. I have been working on the concept of moving my weight more to the left at address for some time now, and my ball striking gradually improved, significantly, as I used to sway off the ball too much and then not get back forward at contact unless I made what I felt was a big lateral/slide move with my left hip. I had always been a "picker" and the low point in my swing was not in front of the ball as it should be for consistent quality contact. A week or so ago, I stumbled upon your S&T videos and realized I have been trying to incorporate your concepts on my own, at some intuitive level, for quite a while now!! It's kind of amazing that I had been utilizing S&T without ever realizing that I was! I started incorporating it after better understanding the golf swing and thinking that I need to feel like I was hitting down on the ball more, getting the shaft leaning forward of the ball at impact, taking a proper divot, etc....
The other thing I have been trying to do was to exaggerate the downswing move in my practice swings on the range (i.e. before actually hitting a ball) by "falling" into the downswing with my hips and lead shoulder - similar to what you demonstrate here - as I had not felt like I was making consistent enough contact - too many thin shots - and when I videoed my swing last week I could see that I was not getting forward enough on the downswing, my right heal was not off the ground enough at impact, etc.... I'm really looking forward to trying your downswing move per this video - which, again, I stumbled onto after I had been tinkering with the concept on my own. I think I was afraid to make such a dynamic move - especially since, as you have noted, most of the modern day instructors talk about keeping your upper body tilt away from the ball, stay behind the ball, etc.
I can't agree more about modern instruction often not being effective for the average golfer - who is unlikely to perform the movements on a consistent basis, especially since they don't have the time to practice them, etc. S&T makes it so much easier for the average player to make decent contact, imo! The modern swing as taught by a lot of instructors makes it far too difficult for the average golfer to perform, and thus, as you allude to often, their low point is behind the ball and they hit both fat and thin shots (I used to as well!)
I now plan to go through your entire video collection in the hopes of incorporating the concepts you teach....
I still have a problem with the chicken wing, which I think is still in my muscle memory through years of swinging over the top and thus wanting to avoid a likely pull hook... it is almost like an instinctive response to being scared of the big miss to the left. The swing aid that you use that goes between your forearms and keeps them together would I think be a great tool for me...??
Regards, and thanks for your great instruction, and also your demeanor, which I find to be effective, as you do a great job of articulating your thoughts, explaining the concepts, etc.
Have you a comparable video of lead shoulder action with the driver? With my irons this is a key thought that I try to implement. Great video
You're heaven sent, Rob!
EXCELLENT ! hello from Belgium !
I think I need this aswell .. 🏌️♂️
Third time I watched this as it is always a good reminder. This time I have to ask how is it different with the driver?
Geez 🙄 I remember doing a practice drill I would crush it , I’d get on the course hit ball off my trail side oh I didn’t rotate or I started out over the top for years how in the hell can rotate when your stuck on trail side 🙄 I feel stupid
So I stay at 85 I had a decent short game, you can really see your right knee is driven down like the lead shoulder not driven in towards the ball which is a sway early transfer of weight! Rob thanks fantastic so easily explained and demonstrated!
Can’t wait to get to the range
Hey Rob Great stuff and videos. Is there a playlist for a starting point with all these videos? So you can start with grip and go to next video in the sequence of swing. I would like to work on each part of swing piece by piece. Hope that makes sense..
Great video, Rob. Question: But is it possible to shift forwards too much so you end up topping the ball?
Great video Rob,. Is this move applicable for the driver?
Great
Hi Rob, great video as usual. This one is really a big change for me on my downswing. One question, during your “down and forward” rehearsal, your head appears to be moving to approximately where your left shoulder was at the top. But, when you hit the ball, it appears to stay centered/ where it was at the top. Any additional thoughts on this? Thanks!
Sir, the initial move with lead shoulder and the lead knee, is it also done with the driver swing? Thanks 🤙🏻
Hi Rob; At a certain point in the downswing, when should the lateral shift of the hips toward the target slow or even stop while rotating takes the lead & can over rotating be an issue as well if the body & arms aren't in sync causing a major loss of power. It seems that the lateral shift should stop when the forward leg is straightened & the momentum of the arms swinging thru is what provides much of the speed like snapping a towel. The arm stops & the wrist snap provides the speed. Would you agree?
Rob what about with driver?
Really a great video Rob and so helpful for better ball turf contact. One thing I might add from my own experience is that it is very hard to get the lead shoulder (and lead knee) to go down and forward from the top of the backswing UNLESS your one's chest is positioned properly i.e. the sternum MUST be pointed upward (CERTAINLY NEVER DOWNWARD) if there is any hope of moving left shoulder downward and forward. Left shoulder has to be higher than right shoulder (same with hips) at the top (never a flat shoulder turn) because your suggestion will never get the left shoulder to go down.
Mac O's R shoulder looks higher at the top
@@goathumper111 Having the right shoulder higher doesn't mean necessarily that the sternum is pointing upwards. Try it and see for your self. You can move your right shoulder higher and still point your sternum downwards with ease. The move forward and down from the top will not work with a HIGHER RIGHT SHOULDER unless the higher right shoulder is accompanied by a sternum pointing upward and not level and never downward. Looks are deceiving.
Rob, so it's ok for the head to move forward a few inches on the way down? And presumably this move helps with early extension (my main problem)?
Would you be so kind as to explain why the tip is not appropriate when using the driver?
When I practice this move it seems easier for me if I start my backswing by taking a slight dip. So just a slight down then I can easily come up as you suggest. I am starting the forward hip movement almost before I complete my backswing. I am making solid contact and it feels like I am rotating properly into the finish as well. Does this make sense? Are there any issues with this sort of power squat move?
Hi Rob thanks for another brilliant video. Could you advise me on how to get below a 100 in a golf Round. I’m not a regular golfer maybe twice per month. I do practice in my back garden. My pals tell me I have an excellent swing. That’s mainly down to your videos. My short game and putting are good. I always try the Super Shots but unfortunately that’s why I can’t break a 100. Thanks again Rob. I would love to beat a 100 and then beat 90. Great videos. Kindest Regards Stuart
@@golftecasia Thanks Rob, as always very much Appreciated. Kindest Regards Stuart
Is it different with a driver because I get good height on irons but hit line drives with the driver
This move works for my irons. What would be the difference for the driver?
My 6 year old had an issue hitting behind the ball most of the time and i couldn't figure out what was causing it, this video is a god send.. what are your thoughts on leaning the shoulder a bit forward at address to compensate for doing it at the top of the backswing? Or maybe as a drill until that forward feeling is ingrained?
@@golftecasia 🙏🏿
Is this move causing the arms to drop?
Rob: Do you give remote instruction?
During practice swing When u move yr shoulder and knee downward, yr head move downward and forward too, but when u hit the ball, yr head doesn't move at all, I'm a bit confuse on what to do
Does moving your shoulder forward move your head too far forward?
this looks great.... but it makes your head go down also..
I am in Australia, is there any coaches over here that teach this style golf?
Looks like you can chunk the hit before the ball.
So how do you start the driver swing I’m guessing the knee still moves down and forward but not sure how the shoulder should move
@@golftecasia my fault with driver is topping it mostly because I don’t tilt enough ( I think) although sometimes it might be because I move up too soon
For irons the left leg straightens (quicker than drive) before impact,?
@@golftecasia Oh yeah!
WOW
Where’s the hip bump in that sequence?
Why the down aspect of it if you have to push back up and get back to where you started? Can you not just move forward?
@@golftecasia thanks for the reply. This is probably the area I struggle with most. I stay centered decently well on the backswing, but I do not get forward enough on the downswing. I just kinda continue to stay centered.
Rob, When I try to imply what you say, I am hitting the ground behind the ball. I have tried to turn my pelvis towards the target faster but it is not helping. Carlos
Mashed potatoes gravy & butter!
Slow down on the last part of the swing. The pushing up explanation is hard to see what you are doing.
you are hitting on a mat. you can't hit fat shots.
Like most teachers on UA-cam. You talk too much. Just get to the point. Short and sweet! You could cut your videos in half!
Well that works just dandy, (from a habitual thinner) Thanks Rob
