The Real Key To A PERFECT Backswing Pivot! 5 Reasons To DO THIS!

- 5 reasons to change your knee flex:
1. To turn the hips (to turn)
2. To turn the hips on a tilted angle
3. To facilitate inward hand path
4. To reduce sway
5. To relieve stress on the body
When it come to the golf swing, most discussion involves TURNING the body back and through to create your ideal swing, however, this description is inaccurate and incomplete.
The tilting motion that happens in the backswing, downswing, and follow-through is far less talked about, but far more important if you want to build a consistent swing. To complete a functional golf swing, golfers must turn on a TILTED angle, and to TILT correctly involves multiple body parts - especially the KNEES!

It's a disgrace that only 1 in every 29 people who have watched this excellent video have bothered to click the like button! Keep it going Rob, some of us truly appreciate your help! 👏
Awesome, finally instruction from the waist down, 30 years late. Great job, keep it up.
I've watched hundreds, if not thousands, of golf videos. I think this is the best that I've ever seen! I love how well you explain things.
As an S&T student (age 79) this is one of the best, probably best, analysis of the swing. Thank you, thank you. Where was this for me 30 years ago ? 😂
Another great video Rob. Remember your vid on uphill lies? Well this summer I ended up on a steep uphill lie about 3 ft past a sand trap. My partner laughs & tells me good luck with that lie. So I set up like you said for that lie & think to just swing with a nice tempo. I hit the ball flush & then my club comes to a sudden stop in the side of the mound. The ball flies stright & way up & lands softly on the green. My partner who was looking for his ball comes over & says where is your ball & I point at the green. He looks at me like c'mon guy! To top it all off I go up & sink the 25 ft putt for a par5. Best seven iron I ever hit in my life(I'm 78)! Thanks Rob, you rock!
78 ? Just a kid with a dream ! Great job friend !
After following so many golf channels, I am going to stick just to Rob💯
I'm on this video because i've realised how important this is after years of focusing on the takeaway and trying not to sway and then being static and lifting out of my posture to be able to make a full turn. This should be taught to all beginners. A lot other stuff falls in to place if you allow yourself to make a correct body turn.
Thank you rob for your solid teaching.
As a senior golfer the lesson on the knees helped me immensely thank you for a great tip one of the best on UA-cam
I cant get over how S&T has improved my golf game. It’s been an easy transition for me to changeover from my old swing to this method. I certainly haven’t mastered it but the basics are rather simple. Every video tip I watch makes my swing just that much better. I can’t say thank you enough for your well explained and taught S&T lessons. 👍👍
Thanks a lot for all the great S & T vids! I have watch a lot of others but I always get so much more out of yours! Thanks a lot for all your help with S & T … priceless ….
The explanations help so much Rob, many coaches don’t do it like you, thanks
Your instruction helps me the most of all the utube instruction. Thanks Rob.
Hi Rob-Another "great" simple visual for seeing the the correct turn elements. Helps in a nice slow and easy way to add to the many other visuals/lessons you gives your S/T community. Can't thank you enough. Be good, stay safe-Russ
Thanks Rob ...another brilliant and simple tip to improve almost everything in the backswing.
Excellent. All makes perfect sense. Maybe the best golf lesson ever right here.
Great coaching! Thank you😊
Thanks Rob! As always, intelligent quality instruction. Will join you on skillets. Very best, Richard.
This is a great explanation of using the lower body. Thank you. And thanks for drills.
Great video really enjoy it. Thank you so much
Brilliant presentation, thank you
Thanks Rob. I sometimes get lazy doing this. You and JKM are very good instructors. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Great video and great teaching thank you
When I started to take the tilt seriously it felt like falling towards the target side. The mirror showed me I had a very good tilt😂
Very good Rob. Thank you.
Great video, I was guilty of not using my hips correctly, and lost a lot of distance.
This got me to focus on my knees more. And the difference was instant. Much better distance and a solid ball first strike.
Thank you so much 👍
Thank you, very helpful!!!
thank you for this,i have always had a problem with my flat backswing, you have shown me my problem
Your videos are excellent!
The best teacher!!!
Thanks a lot! Best S & T instruction on UA-cam for sure !
@@golftecasia
That’s the least I could do….I have really learned a lot from you about the S $ T….and plan on giving more going forward….thanks again Rob ! Also telling friends about your channel as you have a way of explaining and demonstrating
that is easily understood !
Great video !
You are the best instructor about body mechanics and golf swing physics mechanics 😊❤
Very helpful 🙌
Excellent video Rob! I’ve been restricting my knee extension and it’s been hurting my lower right side. This has alleviated the pain😊
Amazing analysis of correct body rotation, the knees have been so neglected.
This is just one brilliant lesson. I can see now what i did wrong in the past with this swing. Thanks for the great drills. It will help a lot.
Love this video ! Makes so much sense…!
Brilliant and well explained! 💥⛳️🐥👍
Awesome video.
Peter here, Rob. Firstly, your instruction on S&T is so thorough, and always makes complete sense. Haven’t heard you fluff a line yet (LOL). Since adopting it, I have had real, measurable success with all clubs, but I want to touch on the mental side for me. Weight forward, at setup, just feels so comfortable, natural and balanced. I never feel as though I will sway off the ball on the backswing. Additionally, I can keep my lead arm gun-barrel straight going back and in, without that feeling of my weight shifting to where it shouldn’t be. Couldn’t really do that with the old standard setup. It’s so much easier with weight forward. This is the single-most important factor for me and has instilled confidence in my ball striking. Greetings from Down-Under.
That’s the most helpful video ever,I’m only 42 and have a serious pelvis problem, this video is allowing me to continue playing
Rob, too bad you are so far away! I would love so much to have golf lessons from you! I'm from Quebec Canada! Wish you'd come closer! You are the best teacher out there!
Rob and other golftec videos have helped me better understand how important it is to start the knee flex in the takeaway and not fight it.
This is great and thank you for this. It would be good if you did a lesson on the transition and down swing
Hi Rob, thank you in advance for all the videos on stack and tilt that I’ve watched. Must admit that my iron ball striking is phenomenal after adapting the stack and tilt swing. Almost every shots were solid and crispy and followed by ‘clean professional’ divots, which I’ve never experienced before on conventional technique.
I am now 73 years old and now using R-flex 60gm graphite shaft iron that I feel forgiving and friendly. I’ve tried R-flex steel shaft, the result was surprisingly amazing and perhaps gaining further distant. What are your views perhaps experience or feedback from other golfers using stiff steel shaft similar to my current circumstance.
Rob, with this leg movement is much easier to get left bend and right bend. Great stuff !
Pure gold!
Another excellent video. I look forward to Friday’s, just for your videos.
How are getting that whipping club speed at the bottom of downswing. It looks like it adds major amount of speed though contact. Thanks
Excelente Master 👏
Saludos
Another great presentation, thanks so much. Don't the hips turn less than the shoulders to create more torque in the body?
This is really great , after 30 years of traditional golf education I am starting to get it. I was always good at skipping rocks, how difficult I have make it to try and do something so simple, eg load the back leg, shallow the club etc ::: rubbish when all I need to do is keep my weight forward, flex my left knee down just like you describe and just go for it - thanks for the enlightenment
Thanks Rob, after going through a couple of knee replacements I found that I was becoming motionless from the waist down for really no reason at all ! Highlighting the importance of the knee flex really helped me to refocus its importance. One question I have, I have dropped my right foot back and as long a I keep my weight on my left side, I am able to get a better turn and hit the ball more solidly. However, I was wondering if there are any drawbacks to dropping the right foot back or any adjustments I should be sure and make if i want to make this stance change permanent? Thanks for all your great instruction.
just another kick ass lesson from the best.
What about the knees in the follow through? I really like how u have addressed the follow through in ur other videos.
Hi Rob great stuff as always. What is your view on lifting the lead heal on the back swing?
ry well described Ron. What about the knees in the downswing? Merry Christmas. Sorry, your answer is on the recommended video at the end.
Hi Rob, your videos are great. I have learned so much from your videos excellent stuff. I've been taking S&T lessons for about two months now and seeing much improvement in my ball striking. You describe how important the knee flex is in your swing could not agree more as this is often overlooked with us armature golfer. Would you say the lead knee goes more down or forward and down?
Amazingly simple, but the MOST ignored tip that helps the body turn...Thnx!
Good Morning Rob,
this video its very inlightning.
I have one question about the kneeflex of the left knee.
When I flex my left knee it gets to the inside or to the right.
My golfmate always reminds me that I am doing the Shaking Steven's.
Do you see a failure here when the knee gets to the inside.
You can see this a little bit at 8:13 in your move.
To bring my knee to the inside helps me turning more.
Appreciate your answer.
Good job!
Greetings from Germany,
Andreas
Rob, could you do the logical follow on from this, how they work, moving into the opposite direction.
EXCELLENT !
Would be nice to see a foundation series. Fromthe ground up. This lesson would follow a grip lesson, and that is as far as I got when connecting the dots, steps. Critical first step info, 40 years too late ! Thank you Rob !
Great video. Maybe you could have added that the weight distribution goes initially on the lead foot (your stack & tilt video)..
Rob, can you comment some on your (left) lead leg in regards to opening your left hip in the downswing. I've been following your past instruction for over a year and have seen a very nice improvement (I'm a senior golfer). I've had issues with opening of my left hip (actively trying to rotate it) in the downswing leading to mishits and/or pulling the ball left. It appears in watching your video, the rotation mirrors your back swing in regards to flexion/extension of your knee rather than actively opening of the hip. Your left knee flexes towards the ball then then it the downswing you extend your left knee and with your weight shift and right knee flexing and driving forward you rotate around a "locked" left hip. Is that what I am seeing? Thank you.
Rob, Recently I became aware of the figure 8 loop swing drill where an inside to out swing is achieved. For me it has transformed my game and has eliminated any tendency to cast the club. Just wondered if you have any thoughts on this drill as really worked wonders for me. I hope you don't mind me mentioning it even though it may not relate to this video.
When I do this, it feels that I do not feel an increase. in pressure in the trail foot( as often taught) but rather feel a slight increase in pressure in the forward foot, with slight increase in pressure toward the ball of the lead foot. So there is no "weight shift" in the backswing. Also, since the pressure is already in the forward foot at the end of the backswing, there is no need to make an hip slide forward in the transition. The transition in the downswing is propelled by the left knee straightening rather than the right foot pressing . Does that make sense?
So good 5
Even though I don't use a Hackmotion, I am sure that Global Deviation is definitely a problem in my process. This excellent drill addresses that, as can be seen in your video. Thank you.
I would love to hear an answer from you on this question; I am a right handed golfer and I also have a total knee replacement in my right leg. The knee replacement does not have much lateral flex at all, so I cannot do the standard technique of moving the left knee in, toward my left knee as I go through my golf swing. Can you suggest or recommend how I may compensate for this?
Would it be an option to pre-set the hips and knees to help keep the majority of one's weight on the front leg?
Is stack and tilt suitable for an over 70? easy on the back?
I have a question about ground forces on the lead side and how to use them without injury. I have found that if I push off my lead side on the downswing I can pick up 10 yds of carry and sometimes 15 with carry plus roll. That much said I'm finding to really hard on my inner leg. Any suggestions?
I can do this movement easily. My problems occur in dowswing some heavy shots and feeling your wt is on your trail leg. Any help would be beneficial
Greatest video on YT on this subject. Is this stack and tilt? The swing theoryfrom 50s to 80s didnot teach rhis..am I right?
@robcheneygolf resistance model had me going no whete for years.....once I started releasing my right knee I am a much better ball striker....your video helps many..
Congrats.
Are there any notes on how to prevent that left knee bend, from resulting in a significant 'dip' in head placement? I naturally have a lot of knee flex, but it causes me to lower my head about 4-6", like I'm kneeling downward when I bend that left knee further and further.
Do you not need to bump your hip forward at setup if you do this?
Rob, what is your profile name on skillist?
By changing knee flex, like you show here, make head and body dip, and so raise the head and body in thru swing causing early extension?
Sure does in my case
i was trying this today i played well but still hit a few fat shots and feeling that i had my weight on my front idk but crushed my irons i dont like it with the driver yet
I saw a video that suggested that if you placed the club across your shoulders, the angle of the club should be steeper after you complete your swing than on your backswing. If the club is pointed 12”-15” outside the ball on the backswing, where should it pointed at/after contact? Still outside the ball or closer to the ball?
@@golftecasia my guess is that it's due to the with the weight moving left. if the lower body moves left and the head stays relatively still, the angle created by the shoulders moving around the spine would steepen. am i close?
so the left knee must be lower then the right on the backswing? how much lower
2:55 Could you tell the left and right foot pressure in percentage?
@@golftecasia Thanks for reply. Just to be clear - 60% on the left foot?
I was taught to keep bend in your right leg . I see that yours is more straight . Am I seeing that correctly?
Locked hips sinks hits!
Straightening the trail leg causes lift in the upper body . A definite no , no.
Also there is no coil in the spring. That is , the right glute isn’t loaded up . ( the best power source from the lower body) . Straightening the trail leg results in thinned weak slices . It also results in a reverse pivot .How can you teach this ?
Same with driver I assume?
In your stack and tilt video you advocate moving your lead hip and knee slightly forward then taking your back swing. I don’t see you doing that on this video. Do you still advocate that move?
Your left knee on the backswing moves OVER your left foot rather than moves more toward your right knee.Is that by design?
Excellent instruction
A video on stack and tilt for the driver please
@@golftecasia
Rob you are the best and believe me I have tried and followed many you tube instructors over the years
Thank you so much for your reply and links to more of your videos relevant to my query
My ball striking and distances have improved already is spite of my advancing years ( 80 next year )
….do the ‘hips’ power the downswing?…
Good video but a bit misleading in your wording. You stated several times to straighten the right (back) knee. While you certainly straighten it, you never mentioned that you shouldn't fully straighten the back leg because doing so brings a whole host of issues. This is a very important part that should have been addressed in this issue.
Who explains the swing better than Mr. Cheney? Unfortunately, for me, Rob had not yet been born when my golf struggles commenced.
I hope ur a better coach then mine was at golf tec. Total car salesman
Great video but every method I watch claim they are pain free . Golf teaching these days is like take a pick . Not being negative just venting. This is from someone that plays with a fuse neck .
your hands are too flat and deep pros want to keep those hands in front of chest
I took this drill to the course Friday and dropped 5 strokes on the back 9 at the Wigwam Red Course 🏌️♂️
