Sale is situated roughly mid-way between the other large Gippsland centres of Traralgon and Bairnsdale, just west of the extensive Gippsland Lakes network.
In 1890, Sale became a river port due to the construction of a man-made canal linking the town centre with the Gippsland Lakes and the open sea via the Thomson River. The historic Port of Sale has been preserved and redeveloped with extensive berthing facilities, a boardwalk, fishing platform, boat ramp and BBQ facilities. Adjacent to the port precinct is the Gippsland Art Gallery, council offices and the town's performing arts centre.
Sale has an attractive commercial centre. It extends along Raymond Street and into intersecting Cunninghame Street, part of which is a pedestrian mall that is dominated by a large clock tower.
Several historic buildings of interest can be found in Sale's town centre including the former municipal offices in Foster Street (built in 1863) which are now home to the Sale Historical Museum which showcases local history and artefacts. The Criterion Hotel, located in York Street, is one of the oldest hotels in Gippsland, having been built in 1865. In addition, there are several historic church and school buildings.
Near the corner of Foster Street and York Street are the Lake Guthridge Parklands which cover over 35 hectares. There are two lakes within the park - Lake Guthridge and the smaller Lake Guyatt. Adjacent to the lakes are sporting facilities, playgrounds, parkland, pathways and the Sale Botanic Gardens which were established in 1860.The nearby 308 hectare Sale Common State Game Refuge, accessed via the road south to Longford, offers visitors the opportunity to observe wildlife in extensive marsh and grassland areas.
The historic Swing Bridge is located around 5 kilometres south of Sale, off the South Gippsland Highway north of Longford. This 45 metre long wrought-iron structure was built in 1883 and spans the La Trobe River at the Thomson River junction. Its design allowed the bridge to swing open to allow steam boats travelling between the Port of Sale and Melbourne to pass through during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The bridge is now open to pedestrians only.
Around 20 kilometres north-east of Sale, via Bengworden Road, is Marlay Point on the western shores of Lake Wellington. There are picnic facilities overlooking a strip of sandy shoreline, a jetty, boat ramp and yacht club.
We hope you enjoy our channel. We often get asked, ‘what is vanlife?’ Van life is a lifestyle of living in a vehicle full or part-time. The names are compound words that derive from the fact that it is typically done in a van that has been modified with basic amenities, such as house batteries, solar panels, a bed platform, some form of toilet, sink, and storage space. Some van-dwellers live this lifestyle by choice while seeking freedom, self-sufficiency, and mobility without paying for conventional stationary housing, while for others it may be one step from living on the street or in a shelter. Although the term van-dwelling implies living in a van, many types of vehicles may be used for permanent, mobile living arrangements, including former public buses or school buses, campervans, recreational vehicles (RVs), travel trailers, mobile homes, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and cars.
We enjoy part-time van-life, creating weekly episodes that are live at 5pm (AEST) Sundays, and sharing our experiences on our travels with our cavoodle, Twyla. In our episodes we stay at free and paid campsites, showing our tips and tricks on how to make life on the road easier and fun. Come join us on our adventures!

Glad you enjoyed your stay in my home town, but I’m sorry we turned on the bad weather for you. The swing bridge is still fully operational, and there are weekly tours of one of the fully restored water towers. We’re a RAAF town, and the home of The Roulettes, so you’ll often see them practicing overhead.

Hi Barbara, thanks for the message. I do think that some under-estimate what our Victorian and state towns have to offer. Deano

Hi Joanne, glad you found us and enjoy watching what we do. You don't need a van to enjoy what we have close to home - it's just about getting out there and seeing what's around us. Until you do get a van, there's always caravan park offering a usually more affordable option than hotels. We've learnt that even small towns can be surprising places and can be enjoyable too. Someone may not like the place, but best see for yourself. Thanks for coming along on our journeys. Adam
