- The Victorian city of Sale is in the Gippsland region. With so many attractions, we could have spent another couple of days here. Still, we managed to see the historic swing bridge, the beautiful botanical gardens and popular Lake Guthrie. The Port of Sale is an exceptional natural waterway which also holds historical significance. We would gladly visit here again.

Originally we made our money by being the only viable way into Gippsland, before roads were blasted through the hills, which is why we’re a river port. People would sail down from Sydney to Lakes Entrance, then down through the lakes systems to Sale, or from Melbourne to Port Albert and up the river. It made us a hugely valuable area, and is actually why we were renamed - so when land was released for public purchase it could be bought up by Victorians since Sydneysiders were on the lookout for land releases in Flooding Creek. Then we became headquarters for ESSO, and a major pilot training centre for the RAAF. Anyone from here in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s is familiar with the flat thunder-like sound of distant explosions, as our base did night bombing practice out at Dutsin Downs. Once ESSO relocated to Melbourne, with the oil supply in Bass Straight dwindling, and the RAAF downgraded, most of the money went too.
Hi Barbara, thanks very much for the information. Sale has a wonderful history and I can see how Esso and the RAAF would have contributed to Sales's infrastructure. Definitely a very livable city with plenty of green spaces and the wonderful Port of Sale. I'm up for another visit. Cheers, Gloria.

It’s a shame like most of the Gippsland towns that it’s full of drugs and crime now
I wasn't aware of that but that is a shame. Sale was obviously a progressive town in its heyheyday. We really loved it there. I hope to make it to other Gippsland towns too.😊
