    This is brilliant!! Thanks so much for doing the research, testing it out, and putting it all together in a video for us all. The setup you did is EXACTLY what I've been trying to find how to do, and if it was feasible. I really wanted to use 2 studios connected to my toslink from my old receiver. This video and your setup do exactly what I've been searching and searching. Thanks so much, for putting the time into the work and sharing it. Much appreciated!

    Here's one way I think you can split the signal for stereo. Get a cheap DAC, like the "PROZOR 192KHz Digital to Analog Audio Converter DAC
    to get left and right analog channels. Take left analog channel, plug into an audio to toslink converter, like the cheap "Musou RCA Analog to Digital Optical Toslink Coaxial Audio Converter Adapter" then plug that into left channel of the Echo Studio. Repeat for the right channel. In total, you will need one Prozor to split the channels, and two Musou's to encode each channel. All of this is assuming that the Echo can't take analog audio in, maybe it can. Not ideal, but good enough to test out, at least to see if delay is an issue. Because each Echo is paired to its own input, I think that you can now have dual subwoofers, one sub paired for each Echo Studio...

    • @UTILITARIANTVUK
      @UTILITARIANTVUK  3 роки тому +3

      Although a bit of a wiring nightmare, this would actually work! You would also be getting a digital signal of some distinction as the Prozor converts digital to analogue and the Musou converts the analogue back into digital! Good bit of out of the box thinking there!

    Am I correct in saying that when you use the optical cable and a splitter, you are splitting a stereo signal into to stereo signals. Since the Echo Studio designed to work by itself and has left and right channels already, would it not be that you have 2 stereo Echo Studio speakers throwing sound. Obviously you do not have a dedicated left side and right side but you are getting the full balance of sound from both speakers. Is that correct? I have the setup and I am having some issues with getting both speakers to work together. I do not have a powered splitter but that could be an issue. Thanks for doing the demo. By the way I added the echo sub and it sounds great also.

    • @UTILITARIANTVUK
      @UTILITARIANTVUK  3 роки тому

      I'd never thought of it until you mentioned it but yes you're correct. The splitter does not split the signal to left and right channels, it delivers a stereo signal into both toslink cable's.

    • @UTILITARIANTVUK
      @UTILITARIANTVUK  3 роки тому

      It's best to use a powered splitter as there won't be enough of a signal to send to both echoes with a passive splitter. A powered splitter will amplify the signal.

    Could you get a bluetooth transmitter for your TV, like TAOTRONICS, for about 10 bucks? They allow you to connect two bluetooth speakers simultaneously. Wouldn't that work, and the TV volume remote would work? And you'd still have two alexa based speakers when you want them. Similarly, both left and right speakers will have both channels, so not true stereo, but easier and convenient?

    • @pdft40cal
      @pdft40cal 3 роки тому

      Unfortunately when you use mono there are no left and right channels. So splitting it from there doesn't seem to make much sense. Actually when you split it with the optical cable you are getting two speakers that have full stereo. It is not left and right but both of them are throwing out full stereo.

    • @luca6819
      @luca6819 3 роки тому +2

      You can split a stereo channel in one mono signal with the content of the left channel, and another one with the content of the right channe, and you can feed each signal to a single echo, so you have one echo that only plays the content of the left channel and the other echo that plays the left channel.
      By the way I have tried to connect an echo plus to a tv via an audio jack, but there is a noticeable delay in the audio, and you can't set a delay on the tv if using the audio jack, it's a shame I thought the input on the echo was a simple passthrough to the internal amplifier, it's not it does some processing that adds the delay.

  • @jondonnelly3

    Hard pass without stereo sound, but it could be done with optical to analogue, then analogue back into a pair of optical, but it would be a mess of adaptors and likely put video and audio out of sync. I think id get a good sound bar instead.

    I am looking to do the same thing. I have to be honest, if you are sending what amounts to a mono singnal to a stereo pair, it’s a waste of money. There is no stereo field and thus the only thing you are getting is more volume. You may also run into phasing problems or, dialogue being buried. If the audio is encoded for Dolby atmos on some shows that might further complicate matters.
    I just purchased a powered optical stereo splitter with rca out left and right. I can’t imagine this won’t work in stereo with my alexas. I’ll report back.
    Great video btw.

    • @UTILITARIANTVUK

      Thanks, it actually is stereo coming through the cable. So each echo is receiving a stereo signal. An echo studio on its own is capable of playing stereo. When I mentioned they they won't be stereo paired, I meant, you won't have the left channel coming out of one and the right channel coming out of the other. Essentially your getting the left and right channels coming out of both speakers.

      @@UTILITARIANTVUK ok. It doesn’t work well at all. I got two of the large ball one’s, plugged them into a powered optical converter and went stereo out left and right to each Alexa respectively.
      First off, music does t sound nearly as good when coming from the line in to the echos. The sound quality is not only vastly superior when coming from Alexa but the left speaker is predominately louder.
      I’ve tried everything. Switching cables, swapping channels. No matter what I do, I cannot get both speakers to play back at the same volume from line in
      Thus, I have given up. The cynical side of me thinks is by design.
      Another weird thing I noticed is that the speakers will silence the input of the line in from time to time and you have to manually re-set the volume from time to time.
      And finally, you can’t control the volume with the tv remote when optical is being used so you would need a receiver with another remote to control volume or, an Alexa remote which I am sure they must make.
