How many moves should it take for a driver to parallel park? How far should the tires be away from the curb? This video answers those questions and demonstrates how to parallel park.
This video shows the driver parking behind a lone vehicle. While this approach is used in the Washington state driving test, it is not the only way the test is performed. Rather than parking behind a lone vehicle, the driver might be asked to park between two stanchions.
This video was produced by the Washington State Department of Licensing.

For those worried about the driving test, don’t be. I’m in Washington state and I stopped driving for 3 months, the hour before my test I practiced parallel parking (I forgot backing around a corner was on the test so I didn’t do that) and I passed with a 95%. Super ez don’t sweat it y’all got this
I'm taking mine tomorrow and haven't practiced really at all.. I'm gonna try to ask a friend to help me practice before the test tomorrow though.. wish me luck :/
@@gabbiecanepa6981 you’ll do great, good luck!
@@MrPewPews thank you so much.. I just haven't been practicing like I should be.. gonna practice after work today so hopefully that helps. Test in in just a few hours :o
@@gabbiecanepa6981 you’ll do great trust me, tell me how you do!
I’m taking mine in 30 minutes🤣I’m really super duper nervous but thank you so much
Passed in the first try today. It is indeed the most difficult driving test in the US but as with everything it's not hard as it seems. Here are a few common mistakes you would want to avoid, where most people lose points in the test:
- always put on turn indicators and do 1-2-3 checks when parking, turning or lane changing.
- always do an extra stop (DO NOT creep up without coming to a complete stop) when turning right into oncoming traffic from an intersection with poor visibility of the road you're turning into.
- always turn into the nearest lane from an intersection.
- Call out every decision you're making to your instructor. Often times the instructor may not see what you're seeing and hence not understand the reasoning behind what you're doing so may mark you down.
- Be very slow and steady in the backing maneuvers and take your own sweet time. You won't be marked down for it. If you hit the curb, don't worry too much coz it's just 2 points off and that's barely anything in the grand scheme of things.
- last but not the least, check your speed. 6 miles off the limit and the test is immediately over with a fail, and with WA's downhill slopes, it is very common for the speed to elevate real quick.
Best of luck 🤘
Wait in Wa its only a 2 point loss to hit the curb? In Ma its an automatic fail
@@jameez3162 I think it is an automatic fail in Wa also
@@jameez3162 if you bump it you’re fine but if you roll over it it’s an auto fail
@@jameez3162 I'm pretty sure if both wheels hit the curb it's a fail but if it's only one it's points off
Thanks
Watching all these videos the night before my first driving test! Good luck to anyone else taking the test in the future :)
Taking mine on the 11th :,)
@@bugzwoody4043 1. did u pass 2. bruh mine is tomorrow
Literally me
@@deodate2995mine is tomorrow too, did u pass?
@@deodate2995 yep! Passed with a 98
This video sounds like an episode from one of those murder mystery show.
nepatriots77 lol right
Yup
Reminds me of that one episode of spongebob hehe
I thought the exact same thing seconds in haha
🤣👍
I literally bombed this today on my first try and then I told the invigilator that I was going to attempt it again and then I did and then I got it. The key is literally TO RELAX. I was nervous as could be even though there was NO CAR behind me when I was parking. I had ALL THE SPACE. It was all nerves. I passed the overall test with 88% after bombing other parts too so I was happy! :)
They elegantly cut out the part where she failed the test for not using her signal.
Ashley Letterman She used it look again its hard to see
squeaky pancake lol
That’s the reverse light
She is using the turn signal. You can see it both inside when she turned it on and then signal on the tail light
i got failed for using my mirrors and my instructor looked at me and goes “what are you a truck driver” fuckin shit i just might be give me my cdl 🤣
I PASSED WITH THE PARALLEL PARKING!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
Mammonocalypse congrats!!!!!!
yessir!!
it's okay, guys, i passed my test today, and it was pretty easy but the worst thing you can do is be nervous because the nerves can completely alter your driving, just stay calm, and remember the rules of the road. Good luck :)
I passed my test last month with full of confidence! No parallel parking thank God!...Trust me just be yourself and just do it , but of course drive really careful. He asked me to do the backing and just normal park and that's it! No hesitate and just do it. Remember if you know how to do it, then you know you can do it and pass your test easily. I'm so happy i'm over with this, no more stress!
Ugh mines is Tuesday, I feel sick I just want this to be over with LOL
Kevin Garnett yep trust me i feel the same way too before my test lol, I didn't even get a good sleep that night before my test, gosh so much stress and i'm so happy it's all over. Thank God!!!!... Good Luck to you and trust me if you know how to drive, then you don't have to worried about anything! Be confident and just do it. Good Luck :) Always be careful driving too.
Cindy Atazar haha yea I probably wont be able to get that much sleep too. And Thank you =).
Tl. T
Kevin Garnett welcome :)
Hi, @briannaFML. To pass the drive test you must receive no more than 20 points in deductions. Parallel parking has a maximum point deduction of 4 points. Backing around a corner has 4 points. There are point deductions for failure to use best possible vision during numerous maneuvers, etc. In case anyone's wondering: A person would automatically fail for refusing to attempt a maneuver, e.g. parallel parking.
interesting so it's better to bomb the parallel parking than it is to not attempt
So nervous for tomorrow 😬😬prayers needed 🙏
Hoih Nu ....same..
Hoih Nu got my test in an hour haha and omg jimin
rachel cosette did u pass ur test mine is Monday I know I’m two years late 😂😂💯
@@curtislong6832 Mine is today, I'M NERVOUS ! 😫
Meagan Smith did you pass??
When I took this test the first time, the examiner had me doing the parking on a hill and parallel parking at the same time, but I didn't realize because it looked like flat ground. Failed the test for not turning my wheels. She said I was supposed to put the car in neutral and see which way it rolled so I'd know whether it was a hill.
No one EVER taught me that. Made me so mad. -_-
The same thing happened to me!!! 😡
oh shit I forgot about parking on a hill idk if I remember how to do that lol
what they fail to mention as she was to go out she should have had her left turning signal on before looking over her shoulder and pulling out.
And right turn signal on as she backed up around the corner.
she did but it wasn't so visible
Erin May she failed the test.
it was on it was just hard to see
Just passed with an 86 ! Goodluck to anyone taking the test!
Did they make you parallel park
One technique I learned that makes this much easier, is to line up your back wheel with the back of the car you're parking behind before executing the park. Everything else is just automatic. Also signal.
You all make it seem so easy when it isn't😩
I passed 2nd go...you can do it!!! 😆
Caroline Perkin
Carrie O practice helps so much trust me I HATED parallel parking like I was always so negative about i and after practicing sooo much I finally got the hang of it now it's easy to me and I did really good on the drivers test 👍🏼🙂🚘
Driving school really helps . Especially with a young instructor
Its easy
Super nervous! My drive is this Friday. I am practicing a lot with parallel parking. I failed my first test because of parallel, backing around the corner and accidentally going over the double yellow lines when turning onto a different street. I hope I pass it this time! :)
america has got it easy man, i worked my but off passing my test in the uk, and you guys make it so simple. DSA make it so hard over here
Had my test yesterday. Got everything checked out except parallel parking. Missed enough that I lost enough points to fail the test by a miniscule margin. It sounded simple enough in theory, I even was doing some practice sessions with my dad a few hours prior to the test (and nailing the curb distance perfectly), but when it was time to do it in the test itself, I lost my nerve and didn't give myself enough space and kept hitting the curb :/
***** Same here
got a driving test in the next hour. should be easy now
passed
opsonicfan358 congrats my dear☺
Blessings Love why thank you
+opsonicfan358 Me in 2 months, congrats I hope I pass it like you.
When you did the parking did you look over your shoulder or just use your Mirror
I failed the test because i didn't use the signal light before I enter the spot.
what I see here, she didn't use the signal light. So, she failed the test!!!
i've got my driving test in the hour, wish me luck
passed
I am taking mine tomorrow in a Suv wish me luck
I have mines on Tuesday :/
+Dewaun Franklin mins on friday im nervousss
don't be it'll be simple just remember everything and stay calm
The person that commented about the most common mistakes people make when taking their drivers test forgot to mention you always want to check in your rearview mirror and turn and look behind you out the window to check your blind spots before merging into a lane or pulling off and merge into the lane from parking or anything like that because you will get marked down for that too.
Oh my goodness. I'm SOOO glad there are videos like this on UA-cam.. It's 11:15am, and I've got my test at 2:00PMMMM!!!!! OMG I'M PANICKING!!
I passed my test the first time, the trick to parallel parking is just knowing when to turn the wheel at the right time and taking your time. First, drive your car to the cone make sure your bumper or rear tire is lined up perfectly with the cone, then turn your wheel ALL the way to the right and back up SLOWLY. Once you see the cone is lined up halfway to your passenger window then immediately turn the wheel ALL the way to the left and you should be in. Don't forget to turn on your signals too.
You've to indicate that you're parking by turning the right indicator on. That way the vehicles coming behind you will understand that you're planning to slow down and park. Nice parking skills. Keep it up. TFS this video.
Hi seattlebest79,
During the parallel parking you are allowed three moves going into or out of the space, after that you’ll be scored. No need to signal when backing, it won’t stay on, but don’t forget to signal before you reenter traffic. When you go to the office for your test, you should be following the instructions you were given when you made the appointment. If you don’t remember, call the office and ask.
It feels so awful to fail the drivers test. Hopefully, watching these videos will help me in my second attempt
I have a driving test this Friday. So nervous...😔😔
Good luck for your test tomorrow.
Yumi King How did you do?
TheUniqueGemini yes, I passed😃😃
Yumi King Yes congratulation !!!!
Yes girl I got one to um a little nerves
That beat at the end goes hard
She didn't signal
yes she did
I love cars with column shifters and front split bench seating!
You need to put on your directional when you pull up next to the car so that people behind you know what you are doing. It is also important to put on your directional when leaving the curb before entering traffic.
She is good! So confident and so skillfully competent!
Years later, I'm surprised I passed my driver's test at all lol This is actually the part I passed first and got nervous during the road test.
If you can take your test with a little car with minimal back end, it helps. Good luck, kiddies.
Tomorrow is my driver test, I hope I pass 😆😂(Gonna come back if I pass or not) edit: I pass yay 🤩
one thing you want to be sure on is to use your hand signal what you are going back into traffic. Because if there is a car in front and in back of you, traffic cant see your car's signals
Well I got my test in an hour, hopefully I'll pass this is the only part I struggle with.
@525manuel Both cones and streets are used for parallel parking. So, you could get either setting. It's possible to fail the parallel parking portion & still past the drive test.
She did the parallel parking great, but she forgot to put her left blinker on as she re entered the street.
I don't think she needs it. Is it really necessary?
nobody actually signals for that but it'll fail you if you don't do it on the test.
no she did. it’s faint
It's faint because those signal lights suck but she did, but she didn't use her right signal as she pulled up to park and went to back into the spot...
Yes, the driver must attempt all parts of the test. The test usually takes about 15-to-20 minutes.
If people follow this video to the "T" they'll be docked a couple points when testing. There's major details "missing" in both the explanations AND in the video examples depicted. As she pulls up and parallel parks she does so without signaling her intent with her right turn indicator as she pulls off the road to park, not once but TWICE?! When pulling back into traffic she does "signal" that she intends to re-enter the roadway with her pathetically dim excuse for a left "semaphore" that you can barely see in those lighting conditions, unless you're paying attention very closely. Yet again though there's no verbal mention or reminder that you need to indicate your turn... Was there no script review by a seasoned examiner for this video to make sure it was accurate? No wonder WA state has such horrible drivers...
"No such thing as bad student, only bad teacher. Teacher say, student do." - Mr. Miyagi🤨
YESSSSSSS I PASSED TODAY =D
this comment stands out to me cause if your truck cant fit into a spot then you need to tell the instructor that you dont feel secure parking there, its a tricky situation being a good driver requires you to make your desiosions wisely if you cant fit then you need to speak out .. safety first
ALL PRAISES ARE DUE TO ALLAH! Took my road test today and passed on first attempt! Some advice, if you think you made a mistake or you know you did, don't let it lower your morale, keep a positive attitude and you'll do fine. Also, Remember to breath!
My road test is on 14.08.15 Thanks, I have learned a lot from the above videos.
damn, wishing i was this lady rn
did u pass
Thanks for the video! Took my drivers test today here in Kentucky and passed!
One of if not the most important thing in a road test is being confident because you spend hundreds of dollars and take a whole bunch of lessons so you know what your doing its just your nerve that makes you make silly mistakes
All these videos helped me pass.
well I passed my driving test I probably watched every parallel parking video on UA-cam and when I went out and first parallel parked beside a car I got it the first 2 and 3rd time and was really tight to the curb but if there ain't no car I can't do it, made 2 wide turns and was a little far from the curb 15 points off I got 85% on my road test so I passed.
My test is tomorrow, I've failed twice. This is the only thing i got wrong last time and apparently it was an automatic fail. Wish me luck!! 3 times the charm!!!!
I thought you need two hands on the wheel at all times ?
IKR, tf they thing we are? Aliens on a mission?
Not if you are backing, no
i’ve watched this so many freaking times
When you parallel park for the driving test, do you have to use the blinkers? If so, what is the proper use of the blinkers while parallel parking? I live in Texas and will be taking my driving test soon. I noticed that the driver's license office has a special area set off specifically just for testing the parallel parking, and that it isn't park of the actual road or anything. I might guess that sense it isn't part of the actual road you wouldn't have to, but I might be wrong and they might not tell me if I have to use the signals even though it isn't part of the actual road.
I don't know about Texas but I live and kentucky and my friend took her test today and failed for not using blinkers when parallel parking or parking in general
Hi, @NaiJorJul. No. If only the parallel parking portion of the test is failed, you will not fail. It's worth 4 points.
You still have 16 more points to lose before failing.
Where's the turn signal ?
that's true they don't mention it . they have too
On most cars, to the left side of the steering wheel is a lever. Push the lever up to signal right and down to signal left.
@KiddWhoFOBS Not while parking, but you do need to use your signal when re-entering traffic.
did she just pass a stop sign? 1:44
No, it's a depth perception illusion. She stopped at the sign. Or else the car turning would've hit her xD
Anthony Taylor That would've been hilarious if she did.
+purdomintator211234 she did stop... saw the break lights... there was one time i took video of my driving and i completely stopped at the stop sign but when i reviewed my video, it looked like i did not stop... whew.. been practicing parallel parking and also watching videos again.. i'll have my road test on sept 10th... fingers crossed.. im going to practice again hehe
Hello ***** Thank you.. i passed my road exam yesterday 9-10-'15.. im so happy :-) goodluck to you :-) you will do fine.
***** how did you do?
@thugricanz I'm still happy that I passed. :) Have a good one!! And I hope more people watch your videos to be prepared. No need to get into a driving school... I learned by watching videos and practicing with my Dad on the weekends. I took the road test in 2 months.. that was fast. Take care!
It looks easy but looks so difficult..
i passed my driving test yesterday...thank God.
I have to take my drivers test in a couple hours 😒 sooo nervous .... wish me luckkk!👌🙏
u passed?
Yesssssssss 😌😌😌😌
Congrats! I have to take mine in a couple hours.
Did u pass?
Lol unfortunately no because of parallel parking. Everything else was good. Just got to work on parallel parking. Hopefully i get it next time.
taking my driving test tomorrow LOL.. came here for a quick parallel park tip
Same day as me let get it!!!!!
Wtf. She has hella room to back up. This isn't parallel parking. :l
The examiner said "Imagine another car 1.5 car lengths behind this one. Parallel park between the two vehicles."
Passed mine today, this video helped me a lot
The problem here and many others video they do not positioning step by step it means they skip many steps and basically not teaching or showing the right parallel parking all says here the best and easy way, but not if they place a camera where the person most look to perform a perfect parallel parking
@ShantellMarie456 It can happen in either environment. Sometimes the parallel parking takes place on the open road; other times it is given in a parking lot with cones.
Heyyy you guys if you look closely she did signal when she was going to start driving on the road on 1:31
Just thought I'd let you guys know lol.
I am taking my test the second time tomorrow I hope this helps a lot
When backing up, it's recommended that you keep one hand on the wheel and the other on the passenger's seat. It's to improve visibility.
@thugricanz You're welcome. So glad the videos were helpful!
you guys forgot to mention that you need to place your turn signal to the left before parallel parking
This seemed very helpful, I'm going to take my test tomorrow. Hopefully this does me some good.
She forgot her signals!
I have my test next month I'm praying for success
She missed the stop sign I think
I'm taking my driving portion today! I'm so excited :)
where i live, this not on the test.
+Wade Lawrence where do you live?
South Florida
+Wade Lawrence They don't have it in Louisiana either
Hoping it goes well for you!
sounds like a crime documentary
+Zahir Hairman I was like why does this sound like an episode the first 48 lmao
@laifsesnes Yes. And make sure your turn signal's on so that the driver behind you is aware of your intent to park.
Also you have to obviously signal first before reversing lol I guess the video forgot about that part and I'm sure people got points for that lmao
That's 5 points for not signaling by the way
@footballpro48 You're welcome. So glad you found the info helpful.
when do you turn the steering wheel to the left?
Babyfart Mcgee-zax When straightening out
If you were 3 feet wide of lead car, when your "B" pillar post, or rear of passenger window lines up with lead car rear bumper, you should be able to turn back left while slowly 'coasting'..
Babyfart Mcgee-zax once you see 3 cones to the left of the mirror or if they use 2
That depends on the car you are in and how far you turned the wheel to the right.
If you're taking the test at a driving school, call them up a couple weeks or months before the test and ask them if you can schedule an appointment in their car just to practice the parallel parking.
@WALicensing unless you're in the state of Texas then if you touch a pole or run up on a curb then it is considered a dangerous act and you fail and have to reapply at a later date to get a DL
Wtf she's palming it.
yes u must pass the parallel park if u get it, also its random when they ask u. my advice is to only take your test where u live or know the roads well
Test tomorrow I'm terrified
+yungmatt009 Dude, just sent in my driving log to get my test date. Only thing I'm worried about is the backing up 50 feet in a straight line. How was your test?!
Zack Hamlin I passed, but my instructor was being a bitch lol. And on my test we don't have to back up 50ft
+yungmatt009 Wow, lucky. I live in Maine I'm not really sure what the hell the point is but whatever haha. How was she being a bitch?
Zack Hamlin I was driving very well. At some point after my parallel, I had to do my 3 point turn. I was moving my head, making sure no one was coming and she said "You better not be faking, because I will know and will fail you."
So after my 3 point turn, I started driving and she said "Pick up the pace, come on" While I was driving at a perfectly normal speed. It's like she wanted me to mess up so she could fail me.
Then when I came back to where I started she told me to pull up in front of a car. She was pointing at one car, but describing another. So I was confused, and I was basically stopped in the middle of traffic confused as to which car she meant. She kept raising her voice "Park in front of the grey car, park in front of the grey car". At this point I'm like "shit, I'm going to fail". Then I park in front of the first car. She doesn't say anything, hands me a slip to sign, and I passed. My heart was racing the ENTIRE test. Lmao, just so happy it's over with. Looking back she was likely screwing with me to see if I'd crack. Just stay composed even if they are mean.
+yungmatt009 Damn man, that's super annoying haha. I don't think we have to do a 3 point turn here. Can't wait to get it over with
not only did she not use her blinkers but the announcer guy didn't even tell US to use our blinkers. she then proceeds to blow the stop sign at the end of the video. fantastic.
Ahhhhhh im sooo scared.
Going to try to do the test for the first time on Friday. I hope watching this video pays off. :D
My test has been rescheduled to next week I pray for success
@BlahBiddyBlah890 Wishing you the best on your test. Try not to panic. You obviously care about the result. And if you care, you're likely well-prepared. That's what's most important. I think you'll do well.
She did use turn signals, it's just that the rear ones on that car blink the red light, rather than having a yellow light. It's easy to miss, but the lights are blinking in this video.
Driving test starts in 2 hours. Scared to death, but this video helped a lot
andrew shemon u passed?
Thank you guys for sharing this video it helps me a lot like me first timer driving.
Hi, @TheGbaker555. Thanks for the question. I'd suggest continuing to practice with the truck or possibly borrow another vehicle for the test. Also, because it’s possible to fail parallel parking and still pass the Drive Test, there must have been deductions in other areas of the test. So, focus on improving in those areas, too. Hope this helps. Wishing you the best next time out!
You can do the hand over hand method of moving the steering wheel or you can do as demonstrated in the video holding the left hand at the top of the steering and turning the steering wheel one-handed (like palming it). You won’t fail for how you turn the wheel, either method is acceptable.
I did it perfectly but failed cause I didn't use the turn signal. I didn't see her do that in this video. It'd be a helpful reminder to have on here!
Hope it goes well for you!
