9 F1 drivers who accidentally influenced a championship-decider

  • F1 championship deciders are always pitched as head-to-head contests between the contenders, but they still take place with all the other drivers still in the same race. That means from time-to-time an unexpected interloper ends up playing a role in how (and when) a title is decided. In this video we look at nine times a driver unintentionally played such a role, from those that ultimately didn't change the end result, to those that very much did.

It’s 20 competitors all competing with each other. Of course they influence the outcome. Ok the Latifi one is “accidental”, but for example Glock is trying to get the best result he can, he’s intentionally trying to beat Hamilton. Petrov is trying to get the best result he can, intentionally trying to beat Alonso. Whether that influences the world championship is not “accidental” or premeditated. That’s literally how the sport works, there’s more than 2 guys out there

I still think that was most absurd penalty in history of the sport, because it should be resolved within the team, but the team probably pushed FIA to give him penalty (I have no other explanation because I really hope it isn't another option I have in mind that FIA wanted to help Lewis xD). That way, since the clock was running out, he denied Hamilton the chance to set a new lap time. Granted, Hamilton refused to let Alonso pass while they were both on the track earlier. The difference between those 2 is that Hamilton refusing to let Alonso past is up to the team to sanction, but Alonso blocking Hamilton in the pit is against the rules, hence the deserved penalty. To be fair, in 2016 Hamilton wasn't driving Abu Dhabi like he did earlier in the season, he was deliberately holding Nico up to have others attack, therefore Hamilton was running interference on his own team mate trying to manipulate the results his way. Even when the team told him to speed up and drive normal.
Vettel just knew what he was doing, so decided to stay out of the fight he could not win and let Lewis and Nico battle it out.
Glock was most likely always going to be overtaken, so I do in large part agree with you. All I'd say on Glock is that he didn't even try to block or defend against Lewis once.
I think if he had made a defensive move and still been overtaken, then no one would cast doubt on him.
Latifi, well, that was just an unfortunate mess, you're quite right.
What is ironic with Latifi is that his crash at Sakhir 2020 led to the rush of pit stops in which Mercedes made errors and it cost the team a 1, 2 finish and George his first race win.
Now his mess here contributed to Mercedes making a strategic error and losing the World Drivers Championship (WDC).
All that while he drives a car powered by Mercedes 😂
I feel for Latifi, because he didn't mean it and afterall it was the Mercedes team not pitting Lewis which cost them the title.

Edit: Its still funny because then it would be exactly the car Russell was driving regularly costing him the win.
And about Glock: I think its reasonable that he didnt defend at all in this scenario. In the onboard you can see quite good that he was very focused on just keeping the car on track and then trying to defend against cars with way more grip isnt worth it at all. And if he lost control and crashed into Hamilton, it would have been way worse.
Its just great that nobody that isnt absolutely crazy thinks he did it on purpose anymore and that even the Brazilian fans like him now, chanting his name and cheering at him when he was at the Brazilian GP for German TV. He even had a cool conversation with Massa that was quite interesting with both reflecting on what happened for what it seemed the first time they did that properly.

I would include Alan Jones, 1981. Alan Jones, 1980 World Champion was mathematically eliminated from title contention at the penultimate round of 1981 in Canada. The following race, in the Car Park of Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, staged the Finale. It went down to a winner takes all match between the two protagonists left, Carlos Reutemann and Nelson Piquet. Reutemann had led for most of the year, but Piquet had closed the gap, being only one point behind the Williams driver from Argentina. Reutemann took pole ahead for the Finale and Piquet was down the field. Jones inadvertently became a spoiler for his own team mate. He got the jump on Reutemann right at the start and Reutemann dropped to 4th by turn 1 on lap 1. Jones went on to take a dominant final win of his career, but further back, in 5th and 6th, Reutemann seemed to be doing enough, just, to do what he needed to win the title. However, once Piquet got past, that was it. Reutemann dropped like a stone, even getting lapped by Jones towards the end and finishing a poor 7th, out of the points and 5th place for Piquet was enough to give him the title by 1 point

The saftey car being pulled like that was a huge redflag. By rule the race shouldve ended under saftey, fans can cry an boo but blame massi for not thinking fast. I mean in jeddah that year he made decisions real quick when ever someone crashed but in Abu Dhabi his brain functioned like windows 5 software.
What wouldve been mich better that everyone wouldve agreed with is if massi put out a redflag which gives Marshall's so much time to clean up Latifis fuck up an gives us fans 4 race laps. Actually on that last lap lewis was sitting ducts he has the engine power that merc was a missile on the straight but max with his fresh tires that's a huge disadvantage over lewis. Considering that max had the fastest compound an were fresh meaning he can do things lewis can. Lewis had hards that were over 30 laps old an it's the slow one. With tires like that going into turn 4 that's absolutely nothing lewis can do to take that corner correctly what ever scenario an way it was gonna be wrong, or his front tires wouldve understeered, or no madder what max was always gonna get a good exit an wouldve picked up Lewis's toe an wouldve passed him much earlier then what he did on lap 1. Nelson Piquet Jr. crashing on orders from Flavio forced all the teams to pit at one time because they would have run out of fuel under the safety car. Because Ferrari had to double stack, the automatic pitbox release light had to be used manually, and ended up causing Massa's fuel line incident, which cost him the 08 title. dear The Race, I have always liked and appreciated your content. But lately all your brits that create great content, seem to only create content that highlights in a sublime way that Michael Masi did something wrong. Regardless of what Masi decided, there would have been controversy.
Now go down a different route, calculate scenarios, where DNFs occured and see the results. Also calculate how it would have happened if the magic button wasn't on, or the tyre would not have blown up. Or Bottas hadn't taken out 3 cars, or no red flag, allowing to change tyres. Or if George hand't crashed into Valtteri at Imola. This championship was not all about the last race.
So stop blaming anything, live with it, it was the correct result for the whole year. The better driver won this year, the better team won. Hopefully next year with the new cars, F1 gets to be more natural and in the future they stop with managing stuff and racing harder than ever.

    1. Lewis Hamilton was not a sitting duck on the last lap, he still had track position.
    2. Micheal Masi is granted by the FIA to use the safety car how he chooses, as long as its done safely. Unless you read the FIA rule book with out of focus spectacles on. He is allowed to let all of the lapped cars past the safety car, any of the lapped cars past the safety, or he can chose to allow no cars past the safety car.
Why did Nicholas Latifi Crash? Mick Schumacher pushed him wide off the corner and off the track. Thus making Latifi's tires like ice skates. Therefore Haas's Mick Schumacher (Michael Schumachers Son) accidentally influenced a championship-decider NOT Nicholas Latifi.
