Very enjoyable to watch. Appreciate very much these gentlemen and their comments. I had never viewed the process of the making of a good pipe. At 72 I am new to pipe smoking. I have enjoyed cigars for years but I am now drawn to the hobby of sipping at a pipe. My thanks to all the gentlemen who have taken their time to share their wisdom with this newbie.
Very cool snippets. Is there more to this documentary? Would love to hear more of these guys’ stories. My first pipe was bought from John Dengler Tobacconist in St Charles Missouri. Originally opened in 1917, it was operated by the same family until earlier this month, when it was finally time for Larry to sell the business. Pipe smoking has always had a deep connection the past, and to friends near and far.
I think I will start my own pipe club here in my City. I believe I am the only one smoke a pipe here. it is about to expand the smoking pipe tradition. Also I realized all of them are smoking on a billiard which is my favorite shape
RIP Hon. Peter Wiseman & Hon. Bob Watt, the two dear gents at right as the video opens. I shall miss the ever gracious Peter's pipe packing wisdom and Christmas cards, sent annually until his passing -- even after I moved back to the USA in August 2011.
I would love a Northern Briar pipe as looking through the catalogue I know they would be perfect.I love a sandblast sitter with a largish bowl and a long mouthpiece.Oh well one has to dream.Jim.Liverpool.
It would be great to have such a community of pipe smokers here in N.E. Wisconsin but pipe smokers are few and far in between these days. There used to be a book store in town that offered a nice assortment of tobacco but they closed several years ago. Nowadays it's difficult to find pipe tobacco. There are a couple of tobacco stores across the river in Michigan but only one of them carries any pipe tobacco at all.
Thanks for the comment. It's true, pipe smokers are a realtive rarity in the US when compared to the UK and Europe. During our six years in London, being a part of the Pipe Club of London was a great pleasure -- my introduction into the world of the British men's club. The Brits have clubs of all sorts, model railroad clubs, train watchers clubs, airplane watchers clubs, and even a handlebar moustache club. You name it, they've got it. We Yanks are bereft in comparison. BUT, check out this link - an association of American pipe clubs. And, if there's not one within driving distance of you, starting your own might bring a surprising number of pipemen (and women) out of the woodwork! www.unitedpipeclubs.org/content.aspx?page_id=0&club_id=90797 Using that site, I just found a club across the NC state line in Greenville SC, just 1 hr. 5 min. from me. Looks like a great bunch of folks too! upstatepipesociety.weebly.com/about.html Alas, the only one listed in NC is in Raleigh, 4 hours from me (Hendersonville - Western NC). There is a tobacconist right here in our small town, but, like the one in Asheville 40 minutes away, you can't smell your pipe for the cigar smokers. Cigars are where the money is. Problem is, it I hang with those guys for half-an-hour, I smell of cigar smoke so badly, my wife makes me strip to my undies before I can come in the house! : ) - Johnny
