- Have you ever wondered how smoking pipes are made? Many people know that briar wood is the most common material, but few know where it is found, or how to harvest, cut and cure it for use in pipes. Enter Mimmo, a second generation briar cutter in Northern Italy who supplies top quality briar to pipe makers and factories around the world. Meet him and learn about his passion and his process in this charming three-part video.
See more of Mimmo in the feature documentary, Father the Flame, now available online:

the most random thing I've watched on youtube at 3am but I liked it.
The pipe industry needs more material like this online. This was so well made. Great job I wanna make pipes now.
Thanks! You should give pipe-making a try! We have a bunch more material from the film that we're hoping to put online. Hopefully this year, stay tuned!
We need more stuff like this and less of the toxic "'Merica" garbage that many channels seem to feature. Flags everywhere and instead of talking about pipes or tobacco, they go on and on about political hoo hah. THIS is what pipes are all about. Not all the other clutter that gets in the way.
I just drilled the tobacco chamber in one of his pieces of briar tonight. Great material.
After watching this I gained new appreciation for briar and bought a unique pipe from a pipe maker, what a beautiful art.
What a wonderfully produced film! I am astounded by the passion shown by the artisans. My father was a pipe smoker for many years and I can still smell the aroma as if was only a few moments ago. Even though he quit a few decades ago, I still see him fiddle about as if he's holding his pipe when he has a quiet moment.
this was amazing, i caught myself thinking "it's just a piece of wood, why does a pipe sometimes cost hundreds of dollars", this video showed me why, i had no idea so much had to happen to get a pipe out of the wood. really awesome video
I never knew. Such an obscure and fascinating industry, super specialized and nuanced. A well made and enjoyable video, thankyou
You must be true to yourself, before you can be true to others. That shows in this video. Keep cutting and counting your ten most important tools/fingers. Thank you for the short walk through your life and work.
Just finished watching the actual documentary (it's on Tubi). Mimmo seems like such a genuine guy. Love his life, loves his work. And he gets to drink the best wine!
Exceptional documentary! Absolutely fantastico!
Truly a Legend He is one of Kind . Thank you for this amazing documentary. He is the last of his kind . Thank you as a pipe smoker very informative
These videos are an insane quality! Thank you SO MUCH!
Thank you! I've watched the full-length documentary a good few times already and this shorts are a great supplement.
Really looking forward to seeing more. The mood that you've captured through this whole journey is something extraordinary.
Thanks Suhail! Glad you're enjoying the film and these vignettes. There's a lot more on the way, much of it follows the same themes as the film. We just kept running into incredible stories and characters, it's been a pleasure to share.
What a like-able fella
Bring me over there and house me, feed me and ill clothe myself and woodwork in your shop all the day long happy as can be, Mimmo. The crazy cut ebeuchon. Long live Mimmo
Ill even go into the woods with my own Pulaski axe and grub out all briar you want, Mimmo

Wow! This is the perfect combination of science and art.
Brother, amazing... 👏 👏 👏
This reminds me of the Statue David. Story has it that Michelangelo' was entering a contest and someone had a piece of Marble and and it got chipped and they couldn't use it. Michelangelo' said he would use it and that is how David got his lean in his stance.
Really enjoyed the video (and the film). I really admire Mimmo's eye for the briar. I make my own pipes out of ash wood but I can't read the wood like Mimmo and proper pipe makers.
It is like watching Picasso it is truly magnificent. Thank you!!
Absolutely fascinating!

Wonderful
Great video, thankyou all for what you do. I'm sitting on my back porch with my briar thinking about how great it would be to go hunting for Briar trees in Tuscany.
I admire his positive & happy character.
But does anyone know approximately how many people in the world today still smoke pipes. Smoking in general is in decline in most first world countries because people are aiming to have healthier lifestyles. I don't smoke, but I love pipes as a beautifully crafted item. I suppose some people might collect them.
How wonderful my friends in spirit my brother in blood there is a special place in my heart for all involved in this art I love them all there is nothing I can say!
Tq very good tutorial

I want to know how it prevents mold from growing on all that wet fresh cut wood in the humid basement?
I read today that it is very dangerous to cut the briar with the saw. That's why only few do it today. Many have lost a finger at the saw. You don't know and can't tell if a rock might be enclosed in the wood and if the saw hits it, you can get seriously injured. The harvesting and curing part looks like very hard work.
How does he keep the Briar Burls from molding in his cellar?
Really hope this guy is ok regarding COVID19....
Its so wet in the wood lager.
He is covered in safety gear. Look at that protection hat !
esta una possibilita cut una vesta pipa block por favor
Commovente
I have one
Does he sells pipes he made?
I don't understand why Mimmo doesn't sear chain link gloves.
Where can I buy this Heather
❤️❤️❤️😃😃😃
i want to know how to make this newspaper hat he has
5:18 leave it to Italians to make watering wood artistic
I’d us a nylon strap and come-a-long to pull the root and maybe a saw

That saw is terrifying
Варвары!!
The word in English is “conviction “
I know that these guys know what they're doing; but, they seemed so ROUGH when they were harvesting the brier roots. I'd be concerned that I was going to damage some really primo wood if I was hacking and chopping like that.....
