Had my CDL 10yrs ago and my company just asked me to drive an 18 wheeler to a job site cuz I mentioned that I had the license lol I don't have it anymore so this video just refreshed me on the shifting. I know how it's done but I still needed to see it done. Wish me luck gents
You shift so smooth, today i drove a standuard semi for the first time ever at my trucking school. Shit was nerve racking, grinded the shit out of my gears and clutch. I need to really time it
i was in the same boat. i practiced in a standard truck at my warehouse in the yard while i was getting my cdl. it takes practice. funny enough i actually was able to float the gears easier then double clutching. back then i had a manual transmission car but my car had synchro on the manual trans, the truck didn't.
Oh man, I think this is exactly what I needed, thanks. Downshifting had me in a weird spot as I hadn't thought to give it gas while shifting to a lower gear.
Today I got behind the wheel for the first time .. I was getting confused with the double clutch . I can drive standard but the double clutching was throwing me off . Tomorrow I’m gonna say clutch nuetral clutch gear instead of 1- 2 ..the way they were telling me .. Great video ..
Yeah man same here I've drove a straight for years but just now getting in trucks and the double clutch is throwing me off major can run thru all my gears going up but coming back down them is a different story lol
Now I understand why when I drove an older Navistar (no synchros) why when I downshifted why the gears would always crash and I'd have to stop the truck and start all over? I never knew to blip the throttle in the neutral clutching shift to speed the transmission gear shaft to speed up with the engine's. I have never had any trouble shifting cars, pickup trucks etc. before, just the big Navistar 30 foot box truck that I had rented. Great teaching video.
it took me 5 minutes to get it down after being taught it in school. yeah i occasionally had issues after but its really not that hard. then once you pass your test you can just float gears
I Wish I had an instructor this through & detailed... Not 15-20 seconds then getting in the driver's seat. I'm not surprised why alot of folks are going to automatics. I bet it saves a lot on clutch wear with newer drivers
This only makes real sense when demonstrated on a truck, like you are. I used to drive a 1976 Bedford TK horsebox and this shows what I had to do if I wanted to get it to down shift. Most people demo this on cars, and the revs die away so fast that they are engaging the clutch the second time with the revs down to idle. I never used it on up shifts, just rev matched and often didn't use the clutch. If you get it right then even though the it was a crash gearbox there was no grinding. I almost never ground the gears. On the down side, it would only exceed 60mph on a long downhill.
Great video!! New school driver here and I”ll be learning by watching video, because my “teacher” didn’t teach me or explain to me almost nothing. It’s gonna be difficult, but I am going to learn online 😂
Same as here my dad teach me 15 years ago with our old pick up which is manual gear driven and cant downshift without double clutching and give fuel. Thank you dad
Thanks for the great tip, first time doing it today, had an instructor that yelled at me Big Time for not getting the double clutch. What a Negative Experience….
Why do you have to double clutch for up-shifting? The gear speed should sync automatically since it just has to let the revs decrease to the synchronic speed.
Well if you want your CDL you have to double clutch or you won’t pass your road test, this guy is teaching students how to do that. Now in your own truck, you do what you want. I’m pretty sure most drivers float gears.
@@emkayusa I understand that double clutching is part of the test for driving, but it is a pointless skill to learn. Not only have driven 2 million miles, I've also been the head mechanic in truck shops and there is no logical reason for double clutching in modern trucks. Ive never seen mechanical failures due to not using a clutch and floating a Trans into a gear,, but have seen more damaged caused by improper clutching than I care to remember. I've seen clutch brakes exploded because drivers press the clutch to the floor while moving because they never learned to get a truck back in gear if you miss a gear. You have to have your rpms correct double clutch or not. I can double clutch if I were to be required to take a driving test, but double clutching is a practice whose time has passed and I've driven some pretty old trucks and I'm not certain it was ever nessicary. This isn't a criticizem of the guy in the video, but the state requiring double clutching without being able to give you a reason for it is like other things when we ask why. Because that's how it's always been done. These are not 5 X 4 transmissions these days that you use both hands to shift, or worse yet the 5 X 3 triplex I had in a couple of old silver dog Macks.
@ffhgu 07 they still shift just fine without double clutching. Double clutching is a skill required to pass the test that has no mechanical use for using. Your RPMs and speed has to match whether you double clutch or not. I know people who double clutched for the last forty years and those who never touch the clutch and double clutchers always need their clutches adjusted it seems and those like me who drove one truck for 600,000 miles without ever adjusting the clutch on a 25 miles rt short haul. The average round trip load required 105 shifts per load, and took about an hour. That's over 1000 double clutches per day. If nothing else you wear out the friggin linkage clutching that often.
@@GreatMewtwo Dude, if your car doesn't have synchronized gears, which is 1950 technology, then you've gotta reconsider whether you should be driving your car. Furthermore, my audi a3 is still kicking strong after 520k kilometers on it, the transmission has never been changed.
Question: Everytime i hear a old truck why do i keep the engine roar a bit then quickly revs up until next gear and do it again such as the video i saw about Iveco Turbostar Passing at 160 km/h
I'm old enough that I know how to double clutch. I lived in a van with a 3-speed crash box (no synchro in any gear). I never worried about anyone stealing it because I knew if they didn't know how to double clutch they would never even get it into 1st or reverse, let along up-shift or down-shift.
So are you saying the average person who drives automatic would not be able to shift it into 2nd gear bec it requires double clutch? Sorry just a little confused.
The double clutching is way outdated. We never use the clutch. Only start moving at red lights, after that no use at all. And I drove 9, 13 and 18 speed transmissions. Kenworth, piterbilt, Detroit, no clutch needed.
If this is so smooth why is he grinding gears like that? If you have the timing right you dont need the clucht at all part from taking off and stopping! Its all about timing the rpm. A semi is a breeze wen really ggod you can even do it with a car, but I don't recommend it. Plus it's alot less effor to just rev match and alot faster!
OHHHHH THATS HOW YOU ACELERATE AND CLUTCH-. I was thinking you accelerate and clutch ONLY in downshift numbers like 1 to 5 lol not when you downshift COMPLETEY
What idiot doesnr understand to push the clutch fully down, switch gear, and let go of the clutch again? Why do americans need to make the use of manual transmission overly complicated for no reason, except extra wear and tear on the clutch?
Older transmissions require you to double cluch due to the lack of syncros or bad ones. I have a saxo vts track car with a dog box - no syncros - when you are pushing it you dont need to use the clutch but driving it on the road you need to double clutch it mostly on downshifts. Much better for the gearbox and much smoother with a dogbox.
Man you are grinding the gears and your truck shakes and jerks when you are shifting, you are not mentioning your speed and your RPM before you shifting. bad video

Super jealous then. My instructors are amazing don't get me wrong, but love the way he teaches. So calm and that helps alot.
@@Piecesofme77 would you say that knowing how to shift in a normal manual car helps a lot in learning how to drive for a manual CDL?

I gotta try this on an old bucket truck we have in the Air Force reserves. I feel like you have to double cluth to just shift up

Why do you have to double clutch for up-shifting? The gear speed should sync automatically since it just has to let the revs decrease to the synchronic speed.
You dont have to double clutch any of it you can float all of it.. Its all about the rpms.
