A couple of things I would recommend :
Hook a vacuum gauge on the carbs and tune them for maximum vacuum. Also be sure to verify that they’re synched properly, they sell a special synchro tool for the webers
Being that it’s a small engine and those are huge carbs, I’d check your jets to see how much smaller you’ll have to go. It sounds like it’s running way too fat, which would contribute significantly to the issue you’re having.
Triple check your base timing and your timing at full advance to verify the springs and weights inside the distributor are correct for your setup.
If all of these are good, I’d move on to the deeper troubleshooting like your distributor being set properly, cams in the right place, ignition box sending proper voltage, etc. I’m sure it’s something simple that you’ll be able to remedy without too much hassle. Enjoying all the content with this car, can’t wait to watch you have fun with it!

you need a synchronizer tool to sync the vacuum on those 48s. Check the jetting it has as well. The bogging is the MSD box. 4AGE on webers with MSD like around 15 degrees of timing then you need to set your timing curve. Looks like you have a digital box with built in timing curve. once it hits 3000rpm it should put your overall timing at 30 degrees. Make sure you have your box set to 4 cylinder and make sure you dont have rev limit set too low on MSD box. If you have any questions feel free to message me. I have been running DCOE on my 16v for a long time.

@Greg Jenko For sure. I used to slide (very pointy) flush cut pliers to split looms open, specifically on Peterbilt harnesses, which are wrapped in what I call hockey tape. Very tough tape. I was inches from a spot in the wire that was shorting to ground, ended up "nicking" the wire with those pliers, and had to add a new section of wire to repair the already open spot of the wire, plus the section that I compromised. Never again!!

Taylor, it seems to me that the problem is when you go from the idle circuit onto the main circuit. It might be that the main circuit is too lean or completely blocked. Time to call Kevin for a chat. The 48 DCOE's seem too large to me, but If they've been fitted with the correct chokes and venturis, they will work. The fact they've been on an AG engine before is good. I've used 45DCOE's on a 1.6 litre motor, but that was a full race motor. Time to call Kevin for a chat. Personally, I would have hit up Duetsche work for a low pressure in-tank pump, & used bango fittings on the carbs, with a Tee style piece in the middle. This would have meant only one fuel hose, instead of two.As usual, this is just my opinion, I'm sure you'll get a handle on it.

distilled water is significantly better at heat transferring meaning it'll take much longer to heat soak the cooling system. while anti-freeze has a higher boiling point it tends to hold onto that heat causing higher cooling temps overall. both have their advantages and disadvantages. location, use, how hard you're going to run the engine, cooling capacity, etc all play a part in whats the better choice and if you don't know then just play it safe and run 50/50.

Most tracks require 100% pure water only in the cooling system in all cars for any kind of competition event.

Your going to want to make sure those carbs are synched together first with an air meter, then you can adjust your idle air mixtures. All carbs should be within a needle width away from each other when checking with a gauge and the needle should be steady! Also fuel pressure you will want at 4psi, I’d also verify that fuel is sprayed at the butterflies while depressing throttle, this can be checked with engine off. Verify that your float levels are correct as well as float drop as that can dramatically change how those carbs operate! I tune Weber carbs all the time and actually just tuned an Aston Martin db4gt with pretty much those same carbs so feel free to ask any questions! I can get float height specs if you need.

I have set up a lot of weber at work. However I have never set up down drafts so maybe this won't apply.
Weber are super touchy with fuel pressure. They usually want right around 3.5. To much and they run fat or flood out if it is to extreme. Also they are very particular about float height. I would set it off of factory settings.
If you haven't already you need to play with the air screws to check you idel jets. In should make it richer and die. out should make it lean and bring the idle up. Your mixture screws should be happy a turn and a half out. Do not make up for bad idle jetting settings by turning up the idle. For your other jets I would plan on doing some plug checks and paying attention to how it feels. Usually you can tell pretty quick if it is lean or fat.

    My experience with carbs:
    1. Check the engine compression
    2. Valve lash adjustment
    3. Distributor adjustment
    4. Timing
    5. Carbs 'reset' or 'starting point' manufacturer's spec of jets and idle. Don't raise the idle, it must reach idle by setting the jets/mixture, that's how you know you are on the right path. Then comes 'road tuning' allot of drive-stop-adjust-repeat (small steps, no more that 1/4 of turn)
Tuning/fine tuning of mixture only when engine is up to working temperature.
Then it gets tricky for tuned engines like itb's and header and cams, for making the most of it, allot of research needs to be done on how did experienced dudes set their valve lash, distributor and spec of the jet size.
Vacuum tool makes life easier when having itb's.
If any of above is slightly out of spec, you will chase your tale.
When cold start, idle, driving and power is reached, could be issues with hot start, but should start right up with full throttle, that's because of increased flow compared to the factory intake and exhaust.
    And patience:)

I’ve always been amazed with Taylor’s knowledge. Just bought a Miata myself and I’m so clueless but watching these videos makes me believe that one day I might have some knowledge. Keep up the great work man

+1 for the purity on this build. Very refreshing from the restomods. They are and cool and all but nothing like the experience of a car the way it's meant to be.

I tried supporting my local alternator shop last year for my truck. They said we really only do big trucks and tractor stuff and we’d have to charge you hundreds to do a GM truck alternator so it would be cheaper to buy new 😂. So i bought new Oem from rock auto for like 150

Sounds like its not running right for sure. Sound like one of clynder doesnt run, maybe the timing is off or something with the ignition is wrong. Amazing build for sure, love the carbs!

Just an FYI, Mallory (Holley) has a return-style fuel pressure regulator that will take EFI fuel pressure down to 3 psi for the Webers. I've used it with a Weber downdraft and it works mint.

Do yourself a favor and get a set of gauges to balance the carbs and hide a standalone wideband somewhere (itll help with tuning).

Oh the memories and the feels coming back from this build. Reminds me of me n my pops in the garage building the show car (55' Chevy Bel Aire 2dr hardtop) and my first few. He nearly had a stroke when I took him to look at a 280z and an RX-7 but I'll never forget he said "shit son it still burns gas, needs the same 3 things air fuel and spark so if you want that 280 get it but that rotary is ALL YOU" 😂
