SuperDerek RPGs my first jrpg... And one off my all time favourite games, I am so buying it. also nice review, I totally agree the music in grandia was awesome and while the magic grinding didn't bothered me I can see what you mean.
I can't explain it but Grandia affects me heavily. The nostalgia factor it gives you is very strong. It reminds of old 80's animated films and early 90's anime series which very much shaped me as a person.
The breadth and scope of this game were top notch. The music was epic, the story amazing. Each town felt so unique and different, and the adventure is a masterpiece. I love Grandia. And the battles holy cow are epic. I got the grandia bundle on switch recently and it's time to try out Grandia 2!
Awww. The game has some very witty and funny dialogues. Also, the display photos of the characters when they talk to show how they feel are just so expressive. The characters are easily some of the most memorable I've seen in a game.
Lols, I adore Gadwin especially. But they really made you love all the characters in Grandia. Even the crappy English dialogue for certain characters wasn't enough to ruin them. I think the writers are the unsung heroes of the game.
It was a lot like how Phantasy Star IV was. Besides this game also had magic and skills. Also those cutscenes were really quite impressive for their day.
Grandias music is incredible!! It always reminds me of my childhood sneaking up in the night as a kid to play more! Story is incredible, loved all the characters, the combat!
Subscribed immediately (you and Erik Landon are among humanity’s greatest minds) Have been playing jrpgs for the last 30 years (Robotrek/Lufia days gone by...) but Grandia has become my all time favorite rpg ever played. Are there better battle systems? Yes. Stronger bosses? Much so. Longer quests? By far. But above all other rpgs , Grandia captures those small insignificant moments and effortlessly strings them all together into that journey that every kid who dreamed of a great adventure wanted to go on. Between the unmatchable music (that song at the opening menu/start screen among others) and the many various events (boat departure, journey’s start, first hitting New Parm, etc...) you’re left just sitting in your chair with a warm smile. Things like those stay with you a longggg time. If you’re looking for a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this is the one.
Grandia is still one of the, if not THE, best JRPG to date. Played it when it came out in europe and loved it ever since. Still have my old copy of the game, and i'm rather proud of that ^^
Another Excellent video, Super Derek. It truly baffles me how little the views and subscriber count is for this channel. And I can tell that you're grateful for every single person watching.
Ive been on a ps1 jrpg marathon lately playing my old favorites i could find on the pss. Already finished suikoden 1 and 2, final fantasy tactics, and chrono trigger. Currently going through bof4 for the first time. I have grandia waiting for me when im done. Havent played it in like 15 years. After that? Xenogears or wild arms are both calling my name.
Iam slightly bummed that Grandia and Grandia 2 are not getting a physical release this Friday for the switch but the fact it was reworked and on a great portable system still has me pumped.
Just downloaded this to my PS3 from PSN for 5 bucks. played it for 3 hours and I need to go to work tomorrow, it's already 0245 in the morning. so far a good game indeed, and I can tell there will be a great adventure tomorrow after work when I start playing it again. oh, and just subbed to this channel. great review!!!
Dude, that Multitapped intro was sweet! And Grandia, yes, great game! I'm playing it with two of my friends on my channel, taking turns in hour-long sessions then passing it along to the next guy. It's actually my first time playing through the game. Completely missed out on this series as a kid and I'm loving it! Definitely plan on getting all the games in the series when I can. ;) I didn't even think about this being made by the same people who made Lunar. I was just thinking to myself that the characters give me the same feeling as that game. Great video! I think the new lighting setup turned out really well. :)
game collection opening theme is awesome In the very beginning when you were showing clips from the game with game music going i thought to myself "did he use Lunar's music? this sounds a lot like Lunar" and then you explained why that is. I liked this game a lot. I still have my PSX copy of it.
One of my top 5 games ever alongside Age Of Empires 2 , Deus Ex 1, GTA San Andreas & Half Life 2. Which is funny because most people know the other games very well, but then up pops Grandia up on my list and so few know about it and the few who does generally speaking thinks I'm talking about Grandia 2 first which isn't as close as amazing as Grandia 1 was. A true amazing journey and so long and filled with content.
Great reviews! Especially good choices too. I love that sprite based rpgs are getting the attention they deserve. You also convinced me to find a repro of Terranigma!
I'm excited to see your channel progress! Awesome intro, and the lighting makes a big difference! Content is everything though, and your channel always delivers there, keep it up man
Grandia is the best game iv ever played. I remember when i was a kid it took me like 2 years to beat because it was so long. When it ended i was so upset.
This game is one of a kind! A really great story line, very emotional soundtrack, great gameplay. If I remember well, Grandia was the first game when I felt it like a true adventure and probably the first time when I teared playing a game; That was the moment when Sue left. You are a good man! Good job, sincere and accurate review!
Lighting wasn't bad at all Derek. The warm light established the lighting from the background which was good. Make sure to close up any blinds to windows that might be letting in any bluish sunlight :) oh and great review for a solid game!
I never finished this game, because I did not have the internet to view a walkthrough for it. I was 15 when I played it, and it did not occur ro me that I could have just used the library's computers for the walkththrough. I want to rebuy this game! I had a lot of fun playing it!
Ah Grandia, I love this game even to this day. What started as (to me) an obscure title my mom bought for Christmas one year along with Final Fantasy VII, turned out to be one of my all time favorites. I wasn't going to play it until I watched one of my brothers play it. Then when I started it, I was hooked. I even bought a Dreamcast when it went on sale due to being the final production of the system for Grandia II. My cousins actually had a Dreamcast and when I had visited them, they were playing Grandia II. I've also played Grandia Xtreme and Grandia III, I love each one. When I first hear Grandia III would go digital, I thought it was going to be on PS4 with trophies. But nope, just a PS3 port, might as well just dust off my PS2.
Super cool memory. Thanks for sharing. Your mom seems awesome 👌 ..I'm probably going to play grandia on my new retro handheld. I owned it back in the day but never played it, also had grandia 2 and never played. Now that I'm older it's time to experience these old masterpieces :)
I played Grandia2 and never the first one, yet it was a lot of fun. They carried on with that unique turn-race battle system, which i still think is very unique. Thanks for the review.
Grandia is awesome. My only real gripe with the game is that you can't explore the world map freely nor can you return to old areas (that I remember) so you're stuck doing dungeon, town, dungeon, town until you beat it.
Grandia (Japanese Sega Saturn version) is probably my greatest childhood video game ever. Have you played the original Sega Saturn version? There are many graphical changes, mostly in the battle magic. Also, are there RPGs these days that you feel can have the same standard of the pure sense of adventure? That is what hooked me on this game. Oh! Did you ever get your hands on Grandia Digital Museum?
Definitely some good stuff out there but to date (from ps 2-4/psp, haven’t come across one that has that satisfying sense of adventure like a Grandia 1
I have it for the PSN played it...all many times from the beginning to the end...I still restart it from the beginning to the end all over again because I love the battle system, the story, and the adventure : D
My all time favorite game. Thanks for reviewing it and giving it some love. I own a unopened copy of this game. Its the crowned jewel of my collection.
Loved Grandia 2 'back in the day' about 15 years ago when I bought it for Dreamcast... but the disk was clearly doctored and unable to run. though my best friend found it for PC a month late which is where I played and finished it. SUCH A GREAT GAME. I have a hard time playing games beyond the first couple of hours but bought the Anbernic RG350 in June 2020 as a birthday gift for myself. I have tried to get into a few games on it but ultimately get into Grandia as I loved Grandia 2. Currently started levelling up in the first battle zone outside of town. great review, I did want to learn some tings before getting to involved in it. BTW, do you know where that pin is around the museum also I have a letter for some lady who's name begins with C.... she's in the first town, know where she is? lol =P
I was about to comment on the change of lighting until I saw the shoutout at the end. The on camera shots look cleaner but I think they could look better with some different positioning. Feel free to play around with it in the next few videos. And great stuff. Who did the pixel art opening? That was super neat.
YourPalSal Actually, I made that pixel intro so I'm glad you liked it! And I'll definitely be playing around with the lighting over the next few videos. :)
Maybe it`s the similarity to the one of my earliest childhood animes "Fushigi No Umi No Nadia/Nadia - the secret of blue water", but Grandia is without a doubt one of the best JRPGs i ever played. Every fan of JRPGs shoul have played it at some point, it`s an essential JRPG in the same league (in terms of quality) as FF6/7, Lunar 1/2 or Xenogears. Nice review!
I've been watching your videos all day man, really impressed by your content and how well constructed the reviews are. You deserve to get bigger man, love your content. Keep it up!
I like how you always review games I will probably never play, haha. This one looks interesting for sure, but that magic leveling up system.... oh my. Another nice video, Derek :)
Saturn was first, in 1997. It was a popular title on the system. Blame Stolar and his policy that it was one of many left behind. It's said that the graphics and even frame rate are superior, and there was even a collector's edition.
I played this on the Saturn, even though I have no idea what is going on as it is in Japanese. But it was very fun and feels like I'm on a journey. The music is a good indication of how the game feels; grand. I finally played it on PS1 with English translation and I still think it is the most fun RPG I ever played.
That’s what I love sooo damn much about jrpgs. They’re like old books in a fine library by the fireplace. Just take one off the shelf, sit down and enjoy. They’re simply timeless.
i hope you can review grandia 2 soon, idk if you will like it or not, but surelly it has a spot in my heart. i still remember the "ash to ash, dust to dust" speech at the end. about grandia 1... well, i loved 2 so i tried 1 and i liked it... but stopped playing at the middle for some reason.... i had to come back and finish it.
Robert Baratheon I'm really looking forward to giving Grandia II a playthrough! I'm hoping to grab the Dreamcast version so I can give my Dreamcast some more love since it's been a little while... Since my Shenmue review, actually. Hmm...
There where a few points in the video where i thought: "Shut up, i wanna listen to the music!" That's a good sign in regards to the soundtrack, i believe.
When I used to pla PS1 a lot I got Grandia without knowing anything previously about it and the it turned out to be one of the best games I've played during my lifetime. What I like the most is the combat system but everything is good with Grandia. One day I'll play Grandia II
great video as usual, good to hear about the fan support. battle system on the Grandia Series is one of the best turn based there is" it is just THAT good. You could do a grandia 2 review man, it would be PERFECT.
Grandia is amazing and has been one of my all-time favorite since I first played it! Glad to see you give it some love. I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy Grandia II as well! ^_^ (but as others have said, the Dreamcast version is the way to go!)
electricmastro Yep! I got all 108 stars on it too, but I haven't reviewed it... Yet. Right now it's sort of a race between Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) and I to see who will acquire all the games and do the reviews first. :)
SuperDerek RPG Reviews Joke's on you pal, I already have all of the Suikoden games (minus PSP ones) plus extras! I'm taking over this Super Derek RPG Reviews channel in 2018!

I'm here just because I started playing this again. Easily one of my all time favourite JRPG's.
Why not on Playstaion 4? It was first released on Playstation, is it a license problem?
@@TheGoMetal Grandia was first released on the Sega Saturn. The PS1 version is a slightly inferior port.
Hey Derek, do you know if Grandia 1 and 2 will be coming to the PS4?
One of my favorite games of all time. The magic of the PS1 JRPG era will never come again. Great review SuperDerek.
You may be right about that, but I sure hope not. Thanks. :-)
+Andrew Phillips Citan its you?

101% agree.

Love these retro reviews. Surprised Super Derek doesn't have more viewers.
Right?!?!! Youre awesome super derek! Keep up the good work. I bought myself a copy of sweet home repro cuz of you for $30!
Your video makes me feel so nostalgic, just hearing the music gives me chills. Grandia is an amazing game!
I know, I adore all of Noriyuki Iwadare's works!
The best game I ever played as a youth. I can never get over how happy I was with the ending. :D
One of the best games ever made. ^-^
Awww. The game has some very witty and funny dialogues. Also, the display photos of the characters when they talk to show how they feel are just so expressive. The characters are easily some of the most memorable I've seen in a game.
Mal Cors It definitely did! The whole introduction to Gadwin had had me cracking up!
Lols, I adore Gadwin especially. But they really made you love all the characters in Grandia. Even the crappy English dialogue for certain characters wasn't enough to ruin them. I think the writers are the unsung heroes of the game.

Grandia I and II HD Switch hype! Another great review Derek!

Jon Smithy Sounds like a blast :D
Jon Smithy Wow, that is an elite line up! Xenogears was always my fav back in the day
There was a scene in the game where they were talking about Twin Towers and how they became ruins. This was 2 years before 9/11. Crazy right?
+GT6SuzukaTimeTrials JRPGs can't melt steel beams.
Well technically 4 if the Japanese dialogue was close enough.
Gadwin's secret move! Dragon King Slice! Man i miss this game haha.
Oh flame Burn em!
Hmmph! Flying Dragon Slap! (I guess he does say Slash but you have to listen REALLY closely.)
One of my all-time favourite. Your vids bring back so many memories. Great job.
Great video! I’ve only played Grandia 2 on the Dreamcast so it was interesting to see what the original looked like! :)
The song you had playing during your review, the orchestrated Grandia theme, is one of my favorite orchestrated VGM's. Very good choice!
Iam slightly bummed that Grandia and Grandia 2 are not getting a physical release this Friday for the switch but the fact it was reworked and on a great portable system still has me pumped.

funny how i played this game for the first time in 2012. and it gave me that 90s RPG feeling again.
I played Grandia2 and never the first one, yet it was a lot of fun. They carried on with that unique turn-race battle system, which i still think is very unique. Thanks for the review.

Which had better graphics Grandia 1 for the Saturn or PS 1? Did it come first on the Saturn?
Thanks.
Saturn was first, in 1997. It was a popular title on the system. Blame Stolar and his policy that it was one of many left behind.
It's said that the graphics and even frame rate are superior, and there was even a collector's edition.

One day I'll play Grandia II
I was just about to thumb you down expecting you'd say something negative about this game. But you didn't so you just earned yourself a sub buddy.
June 2022...this video makes me wanna play the game, been itching for that retro games with the likes of ff7 and Legend of Legaia
Never played this series but I am eagerly looking forward to playing at the first time on the switch
You're welcome again. Haha.
Like I said, love your review style and the genre of games that you review. How could I not support it? XD
Awesome review, and game sounds awesome too!
Great reviews man keep it up
great video as usual, good to hear about the fan support. battle system on the Grandia Series is one of the best turn based there is" it is just THAT good. You could do a grandia 2 review man, it would be PERFECT.
Hmm Child of Light has a similar time battle bar interrupt system.
that's where the inspiration came from
The first game to make me cry at its ending. Seriously, even Theme to Grandia brings me to tears.
Does the PlayStation version have anything the Saturn one doesn't?
The gameplay, the music, love it
Finished today, on Saturn, very nice game!
One of my favorite games ever. Few games manage to achieve the feel of wonder and exploring the world as Grandia.
Great review!
Have you done AzureDream, Dragon Warrior 7 and Saiyuki?
Grandia and Suikoden was the JRPG i grew up with...im 24 yrs old and ill still fangirl bout the games
So, there is no language option?
I love Grandia. It is one the the only few Games i bought Digitally for my PSP
I also have it on mine psp.
hey, you should have more subs! nice review!
I will have to give this game a go one day!
Grandia is amazing and has been one of my all-time favorite since I first played it! Glad to see you give it some love. I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy Grandia II as well! ^_^ (but as others have said, the Dreamcast version is the way to go!)
love Grandia so much, nice video!
Quite possibly my favorite RPG.
Awesome! Have you played Suikoden?
electricmastro Yep! I got all 108 stars on it too, but I haven't reviewed it... Yet. Right now it's sort of a race between Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) and I to see who will acquire all the games and do the reviews first. :)
SuperDerek RPG Reviews I think it's only a matter of time before you review that one, along with perhaps The Legend of Dragoon.
SuperDerek RPG Reviews Joke's on you pal, I already have all of the Suikoden games (minus PSP ones) plus extras! I'm taking over this Super Derek RPG Reviews channel in 2018!
electricmastro I second that. The Legend of Dragoon is a fantastic example of the 32 bit PS1 era JRPG done right that is often overlooked.
Andrew Phillips
I never heard anyone outside of ProJared talk about it. I thought it was a series, and then I found out there's only one game.
I played and enjoy the OST; everything about Grandia was fun and a pleasant journey. PS1 really had some great games.
