Grandia is my favourite game of all time! I remember picking it up at a carboot sale many moons ago before I even knew what a jrpg was and fell in love with the game. 😁
I've played a lot of RPGs, and Grandia is still one of my all-time favorites. That battle system is so much fun, and like you said, the story is great. How we never had another game like it, I've never understood. Grandia II is good and all, but I still love the original more.
Ahhhh brilliant video!! Grandia was one of my first ever RPGs and still one of my favourites to this day 🥲💖 I get such a cosy and nostalgic feeling surrounding it!
As a kid I struggled a lot with Baal in the final encounter but if you level well he’s no biggie and you can attack all parts. The only really difficult part is the optional Tower of Temptation
Possibly my favorite game ever. Nice review! I'd like to add (at least for older version releases) that you can mostly mitigate the audio desync crash bug by setting your system audio settings to mono instead of stereo. Not sure if the latest releases still do that, but I have encountered it in both PS1 and Steam
One of my all time favourites. It really made you feel like you were going on some grand adventure. I think the first one is a little underrated since it tends to be overshadowed by its sequel. Although the sequel did some things better this one did it first. I would be curious for a remake but with the state of the gaming industry I think it would most likely end in disappointment. For me this game is a 10/10 and I highly recommend any fan of rpgs and especially fans of jrpgs to play
Beautiful review, man. Thank you for putting together such a wonderfully in depth review of much beloved game. This is my favorite RPG ever. You got yourself a subscriber.
I would say that Grandia is all about the path and not the destiny. Justin didn't know what was expecting him, and also didn't know if there was something ahead. Take the "End of the World" wall as example, only Galileo Force knew that it was not the end at all. But they went there and discovered an entire new world. And then you meet new cultures and friends but you need to say goodbye. And it is shocking, there are no fast travels, no way back, It's not a bye, it's a goodbye
awwwwwwwwwww shit, another Hoodllie vid. Grandia's been on my backlog forever. The only thing I'm skeptical about is the smoothing done in the re-release. It's not as bad as the Final Fantasy games, but it's not great imo either. The portraits look good, but the sprites and little 3D models are so smooth. idk. I'm torn.
I'm glad you liked this game overall, but as a longtime lover of it myself who has grown up with the game and played it at least a dozen times, I have to say something in regards to your complaint/critique about the magic. You never mentioned this so I'm not sure if you're aware, but every weapon and magic you level up in this game is also tied to specific STATS. Leveling earth grants strength, leveling fire grants wit (faster action for turn order), etc. Yes, Justin may lean towards physical damage, but you're still encouraged to level up his magic not just to get more options through spells and abilities but because EVERY level up of EVERY magic type increases his stats. And for the record, he CAN hit very hard with magic - all the Zap spells are quite powerful, and Feena only gets a single spell in that category very late in the game, while Justin has several available much earlier, assuming you give him fire and wind. ALSO, any party members that permanently leave your party leave their entire inventory PLUS new items in the stash. Those new items give a huge chunk of the experience they earned with their weapons and magic to whoever you choose, instantly granting you many levels. So if Sue was your main magic user and had a relatively high earth level, you could have given the item to Justin and probably IMMEDIATELY gained enough levels to get Dragon Cut. Or you could have also compensated with Gadwin's, since he also had earth experience to give. Between the two it's likely you wouldn't HAVE to "waste" a single turn using earth magic with Justin at all. I just had to say this because to me it really doesn't feel like a waste to go out of your way to level Justin's magic. He has several great offensive spells AND gets boosted stats. But even if you don't want to take the time to level his magic, the game does give you a free way to get the levels you need anyway. And for the record both tips I just gave you are given as "hints" in the game at various save points.
Is that so? I had no idea that was how the system works, so thanks for the info. I’ll keep it in mind if I decide to replay this game, it should make things much easier. Thank ya kindly for watching.
I don’t know if I would be able to play an RPG where the companions can just leave. When I get an companion in a game and there are good, then they become my treasure. And after seeing Gadwin I don’t know if I could jsut let him go. Who needs romance if they could have someone like Gadwin, or Fallout 2’S Marcus?
1. Nobody outside of Japan played Grandia on the Saturn, and even then I’m pretty sure the PS1 version is the preferred version. 2. I never said Grandia 2 was a PS1 game, so I don’t know where you were getting that.
@@HoodlieRPGYeah it's actually not the Saturn version is superior.. And now that it has an English translation there's no reason to go and play the inferior PS1 port
Most people found this title on the PS1, let's be real. In the same way most people played Tomb Raider on the PS1, not the Saturn. So yes, for many it's "a PS1 game". I'm not sure why that's rude...
I mean… it got you to leave a comment. And it’s not like I said this is some absurdly hidden gem, it just doesn’t get as much attention as, say, Square’s offerings of the time, despite how fondly people remember it.
What’s your favorite PS1 JRPG that isn’t from Square?
I can’t pick a single favourite, but probably one of these: Koudelka, Wild Arms and Grandia.
Suikoden series. Above everything from Square :)
Tails of Destiny
Breath of Fire 3.
wait, besides Grandia, right?
@@kingmasterlord Nah, Grandia counts.

then sit ur ass down and play the redux mod :D
@SleepyMockii amen to that
Intro and fmv were amazing. The game felt like Lunar series. Classic in my mind.
You’re really starting the new year off strong! That was a really fun review!
Keep up the great work Hoodlie

Great video my dude. Played this game when it first came out on PS1 and loved every minute of it. Good memories
...only one thousand subs? Holy hell. This is some great shit. So happy the algorithm brought you to me!

Not my cup of tea when it comes to JRPGs but I gotta support my favorite video game reviewer

I can get that. I didn’t really mind it all that much. I think they look alright in motion, and they’re moving pretty much all the time.
and now u gotta get into the redux version of grandia~
man i love this game and i am pretty much playing it every year at least once, ugh~
Was that an Ali G sting?
Regardless, I'm subbing anyway for anyone who would cover Grandia in this much depth.
Which one? I’ve never seen that show.
@@HoodlieRPG I think at 09:45 ? Sounds like Ali G.
I'd highly recommend it, it's aged very well.

ahh grandia, the first ever rpg to give me motion sickness. i like it a lot but i never got to finish of it because of this.
Sorry to hear that. The camera does move around a lot.
When a party member leaves their mana eggs go to global storage - so you can effectively equip Sue's magic on someone else when she leaves.
8:30 2 hours and you're done with Parm? bro thats speedrunning there's so many little things to enjoy
True
❤
How come the graphic is so good? Did you use any filters?
No, it’s just the HD version available on current systems.
Oh god Justin's English VA is so badly cast 😭. I played in Japanese so I had no idea lol.
What is the game at 12:41
Thousand Arms
Video starts with stretched 4:3 PlayStation bootup. Booooourns!
Calling Grandia a PS1 game when it was originally on the Sega Saturn is so rude.
Same with Grandia II; that is a Dreamcast game.

@@HollowRick Well, what version is the HD port based on?
Right. It's based on the ps1 Version. Still, the Saturn Version was far superior. Also the Dreamcast Version of Grandia 2 was the better one.
