The sequel was also amazing and I fell off after the third game. I couldn't even believe some of the games main characters could be saved and such in the first game. I also thought those different kind of battles were great! Ah the memories!
I always hated that rock, paper, scissors mechanic. And yeah, the end battle makes the empire look like the underdog in comparison to the "rebels" with their mounted dragons and ninjas gathering intel :P The most frustrating thing was the one on one battle between Phan and Teo. I had to write down all of Teo's telegraphed phrases just to win and keep Phan from getting killed. Tedium incarnate. While I've always liked Suikoden's politically driven narratives (especially in II and III, with III being marvelously complex and memorable), I never found the first Suikoden's story to be very memorable. It's just the classic rebels versus the empire story, which, as an adult, seems silly since rebellions are always bloody affairs where the revolutionaries usually end up being bigger assholes than the people they're fighting, like the Jacobins.
Luckily during my play-through, my audience was keen to tell me to level up Pahn as much as possible and to get him the best gear before that battle happened. I do like that you can at least get prepped in that way to make that difficult battle a tad bit easier. :)
I had to do the same thing the first time I played Suikoden in high-school. I've played Suikoden II so many times I've lost count, but in the fifteen years I've had a copy of it, I've only played Suikoden twice. I always warn folks about one on one battles... and without giving spoilers... all one on one story battles CAN be won. My first play through I lost a character because it was so hard I assumed it must be a rigged story battle you can’t win... but you can! Lol. So. Just make sure you win all the one on ones
