I actually test drove a BRZ, took 2 of my friends along as well as the salesman. We all fit in the car comfortably. My friends and I are all 5'8"-5'9" and the salesman said he was 6'. My friends and the salesman said it was pretty comfortable, so that gave me confidence in my decision to purchase the car in a couple of months
the back seat is actually one of my reason that brz is my dream sportscar, you can still fit people in it, and we are asian we're smaller :) but the brz is very very rare in my country, cause the subaru dealer here just don't sell it anymore. and unlike in you're country brz is also an expensive car . it's almost triple the price here than i you're country. it's just ridiculous..you're lucky bro!
Yup! Not to mention the high annual tax you must pay because it's considered as luxurious car, and if any part of the car is broken you have to wait atleast 2-3 month or even longer just to get the part..one of my friend last year bought a brz from the dealer(i guess it was the last car because i was contacting the dealer a couple of month later and they just didn't sell it anymore) and the new brz window was broken and he didn't get the warranty from the dealer :)
iHeart GT86 you're right when you think of it..even toyota corolla and camry are consider luxurious cars...but some few people here they own ferrari or lamborghini and the price also 3x the price, it's equivalent of buying a mansion or chateu in rural area here
rio sasongko The price are 2x from US market and Subaru didn't pay tax almost 115 mill USD in our country (assuming you're from Indonesia) so government stop their operation.
I have an frs and I've had it full 4 people in the car for a 4 hour drive, I found a hack to the back seats if they take there shoes off then they'll be alittle bit more comfortable lol
Thanks for this. I've been considering an FRS for a while now, and as we all know they are the same car. Knowing that they're usable at least makes it an even better decision. :)
The 86 is my dream car, so thank you for making this, BUT, My brother drives a 2015 Mustang GT and I have had to ride in the back of that. I am also 6 foot but a little wider than you, and needless to say, this looks so comfortable compared to the Mustang. In that, I have to sit on the very edge of the seat, my hair pushed to the back glass, and my knees on each side of the seat which is pushed all the way forward. These are quite usable for a 2+2.
If it's anything like the old 80's Rx7 that I had, a 2+2 setup was simply for insurance purposes in Japan. The rear seats were completely useless for passengers, but it technically passed certain criteria to have it lower insurance costs.
I am 6.5 feet tall. The BRZ is at best a 3 seater for me. So is the last gen BMW3 and the Cadillac ATS. My ex 5feet 7 inches tall and her mother 5 feet 6 inches tall had no problem driving 1 hour in the BRZ. My boss passenger 5.9 and his and I with his 5.10 Girlfriend side sadel in the back were quite comfortable also. The BRZ is a two seater for the most part with a 3rd person in a pinch. Forget about a child seat for an infant. Unless it is just you and the child. No one can sit in the front seat when the child seat is installed rear facing in the rear.
fatboy19831 you are the ONLY person on the www to actually answer all of the questions to seating. This should be the video. No one cares if the very young 6 foot tall nice man in the video can fit in rear. Number one, who drives with bros and cares about bros' comfort? I dont give a fuck. They can buy their own car. The only thing that matters is fitting in a woman and her mother. Everyone else can improvise or get a job/car. And, the rear facing car seat information is vital for people wanting to know about that.
I call them "seats for legless children" and they are identical to the rear seats in my '70 Porsche 911S. At one point in my life (1973), I was selling Porsches and Audis and was test driving a 911 Targa with a client. We went by the clients house and he asked if he could take his family back to the dealership. We got the client, his wife as well as two kids and I in that 911 for the 8 mile trip back. I'm 6' tall and rode behind him in the back. Same could be said for the BRZ seats, very handy for short trips. I agree, I don't really see them as seats, but more a place to put things out of the way of the front seats. You can't do that in a Miata and some other small sports cars. Also, if you tilt down the back of the rear seats you have level space that will accommodate 4 race tires and jack.
My 2 sons are both 6'-1" and, in a pinch, we can take trips in the BRZ. Their seating positions make them look like they're trying out for the Olympic bobsled team and their knees are in their chins, but they do fit. An occasional trip across town is OK (It's a small town), but anything longer than that and they give me the stink-eye. That's why we have the sedan.
I sat in the back of the (much larger) Genesis Coupe, and actually found it worse - the problem wasn't legroom, but headroom (the slope of the GC's rear glass means even at 5' 8, my neck needed to contort uncomfortably to fit). Did the same test as you did before I decided to get the BRZ. As you point out, the trick is to slide your feet under the front seat. Getting rid of that useless postage-stamp rear seat floor mat helps a bit.
for me it's perfect to be able to have the additional ability to (uncomfortably) carry 2 extra people. super useful for friends to hop in for a few minutes to go to the store or something but i rarely have the need for 4 seats normally
For short back seats with 3 people, I usually have them sit across where they might be sitting behind the driver but the stretch their legs out to behind the passenger (or other way around). Might not be the best safety wise but much more comfortable for them.
Those seats come in handy for placing grocery bags or tossing a small gym bag back there. It also comes in handy for placing a small ice cooler on for those long drives.
Honestly really good for the rare occasions you need to seat more than 2 people. It's also a great excuse for your friends to drive you so you can save some gas lol.
Holy frick! Yeah, totally usable, especially if it's for my family and friends who are well below that 6 foot margin. But that still seems way tighter than the back seat of my brother's old Integra Type R, which I used to think were a complete joke since I was the only one that fit in the back, and that was when I was a tiny little girl! Anyway, thanks for the video. Super helpful and funny as always. I guess I can actually use my car to drive my family around once I get my BRZ, if they don't mind being birthed out by it. :D
+iHeart GT86 (KatyCat) Haha, I wouldn't exactly go so far as saying I'm a "car girl" since I don't know as much about cars as I should, considering how much my father and brothers talked about cars my whole life. But I guess I know some stuff. But there are definitely more car girls than people think, I know a few badass car girls; they're awesome.
Thank you for making this video, I’ve been looking at getting a sportier car (I drive a crv, and no longer have to do independent work to pay my bills), and I need a car that can fit me and two of my brothers (They’re a lot smaller so the smaller space isn’t a big issue). Thank you for clearing up the backseat question, and have a wonderful day!
Yeah u cant raise it. It only goes towards and backwards. It's on the floor/lowest position too. If I put my driver seat all the way down its equal with it. But I drive with my seat almost maxed out and I'm 5,9-5,10
This right here is what sells this car over a miata for me. It's not a strict two-seater. The cabin space is large enough for four people, even though I'd never try to haul more than two. I like larger cabin over a small two-seater.
I have a Toyota GTS 86 and use the back seats all the time. They are small and it is cramped due to the fact the front seats sit directly on the ground. If the seats sat 5/10cm up then you would have room to put your feet under the seats and give a more comfortable experience. I however usually look at the smaller people who are driving with me and I get them in the back and usually they take their shoes off and sit with their legs crossed on the seat. This from what I have been told is very comfortable and is usually how the passengers sit in my car. I once managed to fit 3 decent sized guys in the backseat and ran them up the road to their home. Yes I wouldn't do this normally due to only 2 seats in the back but it was definitely a feat to be able to fit them all in there.
Thanks for this. This is exactly what I've been wondering about. I have a 2011 Mini Cooper S for the past 11 years. I'll probably get a new car in the next year or two. I had my heart set on the Veloster N but it's been discontinued. Fewer and fewer cars are being built for people who like to drive so the BRZ/ R86 is just about the only other than the Mini that fits my needs. I need a rear seat about one week a year but when you need it you need it. Most reviews say it's unusable but the Mini's back seat is kind of tight too. Anyway I guess I'll decide when the time comes. When I put people in the back of the Mini it looks about the same as your BRZ. A cross country trip would be really pushing it but knowing that it's actually a usable seat helps.
Why dont they just remove the trunk space to allow for more back seat in these cars? You could use the backseats as the storage if there are no passengers and then it would be more practical for friends.
The one big upside about me getting one, is all my friends are pretty short compared to me. They're mid 5 Foot, 5'11 at the most. I could probably fit 3 people, I doubt 4 though
Armands Deglavs Well I haven't driven it so not sure about the slight power upgrade, but I prefer the look of my BRZ personally. Not a fan of the new taillights.
Despite being an old video and majority of people seeing the rear seats merely as an insurance deduction, I am one of the few who actually cared to have rear seat usability. So fyi to anyone still interested, the driver side rear seat does have more space for your feet to fit under as the driver's seat is height adjustable. My passengers have commented that it's surprisingly not bad sitting on that side vs the passenger side. Never had a feet clearance complaint from those sitting on this side. This is coming from someone who previously enjoyed cramming people into an Acura Integra coupe for beach trips and never considered it an issue.
Before I bought my BRZ I once saw an GT86 in a showroom where I actually tried it out. With the rear seats not usable at all I think I would not have bought it, as it is my daily driver. I was actually doing carpooling to work for around 3-4 months with 2 other guys. Way to work is around 1 hour and one of my colleagues if 2,10m (6.8 feet) and the other one around 1,70 m (5,5 feet). It was working quite acceptably but only with the tall guy on the rear seat. Otherwise you could not put the passenger seat far enough to the front to have enough space for the legs on the rear seat. So, for "emergency" the seat on the passenger side is usable. Besides that it is still helpful to have some space left to put stuff or transport a set of wheels. Another colleague owns a S2000 and another one a MX-5. Just by the layout, they are far less practical in everyday use as there only a small trunk. They would like some "not-usable" rear seats just to have a bit more space when they go to the supermarket. The most important item to convince the choice also in front of your wife or girlfriend is of course the Isofix fixations :D
I find in my car which is stupidly small in the back as well especially for a hatch, is to put the seat up as high as your comfortable with and also angle the seat at 80-85 degrees.
One thing you can do if you only have one person in the back seat is have them sit behind the driver and put their feet behind the passenger seat, kind of on the diagonal.
I sat in the back seat of my 87 Camaro just to see how it went I actually did fit fine I didn't have much headroom left but it was doable and not terrible but the driver seat was father forward because my dad is shorter and the seat is set for him for now once I start using it as my daily in senior year I doubt anyone will fit lol.
Back seats is not for person but it is for things to be place it there, like shoulder bags, computers and books or office tablets. You pretend to be a fool without knowing it.
HAH. As dorky as it is, I enjoy trying to fit into small back seats at the auto show. The 2-door Yaris hatch and third row of a Mazda5 were particularly difficult...
Cool vid! I have a R56 Mini Cooper S and I'm actually amazed how much room is in the back seats. Crazy considering the mini is a good amount smaller then your brz lol. I'm 5'11
Take the back seats out & the lower seat use it for a Amp and Batt & Cap. Install The back seat area put either 1 JL Audio 13w7 Or 1 L7 Kicker 15 Now you're back seat area is no more & didn't go to waste make sure you install the cross brace in the rear to keep the car balance and adjust your coilover in the rear properly for the added weights unless you're still in stock mode if that's the case then just go with 1 L7 Kicker 12 or 4 L7 Kicker 8s
So would I be correct in saying that the general consensus is: you can fit people in the back, if your front seated people can scoot up far enough, particularly the passenger side as the driver has a steering wheel and pedals to worry about. I'm actually shorter than you and planning on getting a new 2017 Toyota 86 soon, I'm 5'9" so I'm almost thinking I could even fit a person around my size behind me lol, I also like to be up on the wheel a bit but not too much to where my legs are scrunched up, I like for at least my left leg to be straighter when resting on the dead pedal.
Mabey an option, but get some cheap race seats. I'm pretty sure they are thinner and it could possibly give you more room to put your feet underneath the seat. Again not to sure have look at it yet.
I have a hard time fitting 2 kids in the back of my 2017 BRZ when you have adults sitting in the front seats (was the same for my 2013 FRS). The people in the front seat have to move their seats up far and squish themselves for remotely comfortable back seat experience. Fortunately I have other cars to tote family around :)
I have a brz. i've fit 3 passengers for 30 min car rides no complaints. it's snug. but compared to a mustang GT or Camaro SS there's a ton more space. esp head room wise.
There aren’t any headrests at all, so it wouldn’t really be safe in an accident. I don’t understand how that’s allowed, especially considering the Civic coupe has headrests and the backseat space in both cars is nearly identical.
i am claustrophobic, definitely didnt think i would last more than 30mins in the back seats. sat in a 2+2 6to8 yrs back and it was horrendous. u cant see much out of pls u feel like suffocating in the back seats.
The back seats are there for a purpose, and that is to reduce your car insurance by $50 per year.
That's also nice!
Hi what happened to the black brz?
But don't you have to pay about 10 times that for the seats to be there in the first place?
i think actuaries are a bit smarter than solely predicting loss based on seat numbers, uncle tony doesn't know everything.
This is really useful, because 95% of the time I drive alone or with one passenger but the 5% could lead to situation where an extra seat is desirable.

Exoticars19 I understand you. ☺ 2017 Toyota GT86/Toyota 86 (Scion FR-S rename) looks outstanding...
"it as if the car just gave birth to you" lol
Despite being an old video and majority of people seeing the rear seats merely as an insurance deduction, I am one of the few who actually cared to have rear seat usability. So fyi to anyone still interested, the driver side rear seat does have more space for your feet to fit under as the driver's seat is height adjustable. My passengers have commented that it's surprisingly not bad sitting on that side vs the passenger side. Never had a feet clearance complaint from those sitting on this side. This is coming from someone who previously enjoyed cramming people into an Acura Integra coupe for beach trips and never considered it an issue.
I have 2 dogs and wanted to see if they would be ok in the back and thanks to you I know they will, thanks!
Stronger contemplating getting this car. My buddy seems to want to try to push me to get a Mustang instead. But the brz and frs are soo nice
If you like brz and or frs/86. Get it. Personally, I have a 86 and I would never switch for a Mustang.
小柄な日本人でも、リアシートは狭くて座ることが難しいです。
なので、私のBRZは荷物置き場として使っています。
I find in my car which is stupidly small in the back as well especially for a hatch, is to put the seat up as high as your comfortable with and also angle the seat at 80-85 degrees.
One thing you can do if you only have one person in the back seat is have them sit behind the driver and put their feet behind the passenger seat, kind of on the diagonal.
Very helpful! Definitely buying ths for my first car. Well my dream car camaro was the first one but i guess this is better for my frst
I got anxious watching this
If someone as tall as 6 feet can squish back there I think we’re fine if it’s needed.
I sat in the back seat of my 87 Camaro just to see how it went I actually did fit fine I didn't have much headroom left but it was doable and not terrible but the driver seat was father forward because my dad is shorter and the seat is set for him for now once I start using it as my daily in senior year I doubt anyone will fit lol.
the shocker for me is the BMW 1 series has a very usable back seat. At 6.5 feet tall I can fit back there with a short driver!
Wow!
Thanks! And yeah I've sat in the back of an R56 Mini and was really surprised as well!
Take the back seats out & the lower seat use it for a Amp and Batt & Cap. Install
The back seat area put either 1 JL Audio 13w7
Or
1 L7 Kicker 15
Now you're back seat area is no more & didn't go to waste make sure you install the cross brace in the rear to keep the car balance and adjust your coilover in the rear properly for the added weights unless you're still in stock mode if that's the case then just go with 1 L7 Kicker 12 or 4 L7 Kicker 8s
Nah
I love the brz awesome videos and channel I subscribed
Thanks for the support!
Would it be comfy if you sat sideways on both back seats.
It's certainly not comfortable for anyone, but it'll do for emergencies.
Not too bad huh? Someone should drive to Atlanta with you in the back. Let us know your thoughts after the trip. :)
And the new GR86/BRZ seem to have a new strange glovebox which may prevent moving passenger chair enough forward ???
I own a Genesis coupe and it's pretty similar. Looks like the brz has a little less leg room but a little more head room.
Yeah that's it, leg room is a problem but really the back head room isn't bad.
I have a brz. i've fit 3 passengers for 30 min car rides no complaints. it's snug. but compared to a mustang GT or Camaro SS there's a ton more space. esp head room wise.
You are like the ‘’BRZ king’’
Thank you for the video.
Just a quick question does the BRZ come with a spare tire ?
I'm 5'8" an I fit pretty well in my RSX Type S.
He could raise the seats up as much as possible. Maybe that'll help
It's like Eagle Talon back in the day
So that means 4 Asians, under 5ft 5 would be fine in that car? Okay. That'll work for me. . .
Probably a lot more uncomfortable going down the road, hitting bumps, bouncing your head off the back window like in a Mustang GT.
I own one of these and have never even tried this. I always just assumed it was impossible.
I'm going to get rid of my back seats. I'm going to put a harness bar back there.
Yeah this is perfect. All my friends and family members are below 5’7 😂
Nice car port!
Thanks! I just wish it were mine ;D (my neighbors let me record there)
I like BRZ, hope some day import one to my country
Which country do you live in?
@@JDL3777 Dominican Republic
R.I.P knees if there is a crash
Better to have than need...
by watching this video we learned that brz back seats were not designed to carry passengers on them..
i only like the back seats because you can fully recline and sleep
Whenever some of my friends do some stupid shit I pull out the GR86 and vanish them to the BACKSEATS.
This is pretty similar to a first gen Seat Leon... and that car has 4 doors xD
is there a way to make the back seats more comfortable or add room like a mod or something
I too am impressed
although we cant fit in the back it could be a good use after a date if yall know what i mean 😏
Is it safe for passengers in the back without rear headrests? Have you removed them or they were absent from the beginning?
There aren’t any headrests at all, so it wouldn’t really be safe in an accident. I don’t understand how that’s allowed, especially considering the Civic coupe has headrests and the backseat space in both cars is nearly identical.
i am claustrophobic, definitely didnt think i would last more than 30mins in the back seats. sat in a 2+2 6to8 yrs back and it was horrendous. u cant see much out of pls u feel like suffocating in the back seats.
Deym, I like your videos. I hope you do mods to your BRZ and make a video like TJ Hunts do :)
Thanks!
Thanks!
