2:36 This instrument is in a G Modal Tuning or G Cross Tuning for those of you Fiddle Players out there. So it's G, D, G, D like a Cross Tuned Fiddle/Mandolin but an Octave lower. It can be tuned in numerous ways, I tune mine GDAE (also a half step lower sometimes to help w/ singing the high notes, so it's Gb, Db, Ab, Eb) so I can play some familiar songs to get an idea of what it sounds like. I use D'addario RUAN01 Strings which are Stainless Steel Flatwound.
What I do rather cleverly is I use a Guitar Strap by adding Guitar strap buttons because it helps keep the instrument in playing position. The strap allows me to play both standing & seated, & actually it also allows me to angle the instrument more upright so that I can get it on camera when recording.
I like using Dunlop Picks, Jazz Picks sound great (especially because it uses Flatwound Strings), Regular Guitar Picks work great as well, but recently I've experimented w/ using a Dunlop Thumb/Flat Pick because I can simply wear the pick over my right thumb & it's alot more convenient.
The tuning peg system on the ruan looks so nice in comparison to pipa, with my pipa it goes out of tune every time you put it down and the tuning pegs keep falling out when you are tuning and they are so sensitive that I have broken two high A strings just by trying to tune it. Why can't I have tuners like that on my pipa.
I know this was posted 12 years ago, but this is because Chinese music is based on aural tradition. Typically music is learned through singing and listening, not through typical Western theory and sheet music
@UCbWEiEmMG1CctxD3RccljoQ It's kinda a Chinese Circular Tenor Guitar strung w/ Flatwound strings. D'addario RUAN01 Zhongruan (Tenor Ruan) Strings are a good set because their Color Coded Ball Ends (as well as Silk Windings) make it easier to see which string is which.

Learning Ruan is difficult for Westerners because there is so little information available to us.
