The little stipulation in Doug Jones' contract now...
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Doug Jones (Star Trek Discovery, The Shape of Water) joins us this week to share his accidental introduction to the world of creature features and how he’s cemented his legacy as one of its most iconic actors with captivating performances in Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, Hocus Pocus, and Oscar best picture winning The Shape of Water. Appearing in countless films together, Doug talks about his special relationship with mastermind Guillermo del Toro and how the two have a unique shorthand way of communicating with one another. We also talk about his early success in McDonald’s commercials, difficult lessons learned from his father’s early passing, and why his contract doesn’t allow for him to be dubbed over.

Why Doug Jones can’t be dubbed over in English anymore #insideofyou #silversurfer - Розваги
Doug Jones and Andy Serkis are like two sides of the same coin. Absolutely the go-to guys for certain things in Hollywood.
Be funny if the two of them worked together on a comedy about two actor freinds who are always typecast to play monsters. Serkis being the Mocap guy and Jones the practical makeup guy.
Doug is one of the few celebrities I’ve met and spent any time with in real life, and he is as nice and genuine as he seems in interviews. He even remembered my wife and I at the next Comic Con and gave us big hugs. Love Doug Jones.
I've met him also. He gave me a huge hug when I told him I was glad they let him voice his own lines on Hellboy 2.
Samesies! I met him a few years back and we ended up talking about our mothers for a few hours funny enough 😹❤️ He’s the most sweet and genuine people I’ve met.
I saw him at a con over a decade ago and he was waving at everyone walking past in the morning before his line got too long
A friend and I literally ran into Doug Jones just walking through the streets of San Diego during Comic Con a few years ago. I flagged him down and we had a very pleasant chat for a few minutes just on the street corner. He was unbelievably nice and pleasant. My friend didn't know who he was at first until I started listing his credits, "He was in Hellboy! And Pan's Labyrinth! And Silver Surfer....!"
Of course, that was before he fantastic work on Star Trek and before Shape of Water and before The Baron....he's SUCH an underrated actor! And a helluva nice guy!
That's awesome to hear. Thanks for that.
One of the most important and unsung actors of this generation. He’s also super humble, and genuine. Dear Cinema Machine, please give Doug every available job!
well, I mean I'm sure he still would like a few days off, so maybe not every job :p
Just realized doug Jones is the Baron in What we do in the Shadows. We finally saw his face on this week's episode and it was great. So funny. The series is hilarious
Agreed💯
You'd be crazy to not give Doug the gig. He's the best at what he does.
I think you’re thinking of Wolverine. Although what he does isn’t very nice.
@@lightninlad That's just how good an Actor Gary Oldman is.
Doug Jones is a genius, he's like the most famous actor no one knows..he's literally my childhood with all the characters hes played
Jones is up there but I think Phil LaMarr has him beat by a mile in the famous actors no one knows category.
@@TheAnanaki if we are doing this, don't forget Mark Sheppard
@@james-michaelrobson287 ...Crowley? No
I remember seeing the Fantastic 4 RoSS trailer in theater and HEARING Doug’s voice say “all that you know is at an end” and that delivery stuck in my mind. So much that when I saw the movie, I was completely confused when the line came up and not only was it not the voice I heard in the trailer, but it was delivered different and didn’t feel like it had the same original weight.
I thought it was strange that they dubbed over Doug in the first Hellboy movie with David Hyde Peirce.
He did a great job in the second movie.
Thanks for your content.
Bless David Hyde Pierce for saying repeatedly that he felt like he was being paid for having a more recognizable name and Doug's voice work was as good or better than David's own.
@@Grizabeebles If I recall correctly, David Hyde Pierce refused to be credited for the first Hellboy because he felt that it was a disservice to Doug Jones performance as Abe.
I rapidly skimmed the comments and saw a bunch saying how Abe was dubbed in Hellboy and my brain got confused. Cos my memory was supplying Doug's voice when I thought of Abe. Then I remembered I much prefer Hellboy 2.
@@Regitron3000 Yep. Doug did all the work, DHP was just the voice and David didn't feel as though it was fair.
Agree - in hindsight. But David Hyde Peirce was a recognised voice then - and did a great job in the role too.
I remember the first version of the Fantastic Four 2 trailer had Doug Jones voicing the Surfer, and they later re-did it with Fisburne dubbing for him. Doug's version sounded MUCH more like what I would expect the Silver Surfer to sound like, I was so disappointed that they changed it.
Is this version fo the trailer online anywhere?
Only found this so far: ua-cam.com/video/ZN7PWE2dyAY/v-deo.html
Yeah i always thought the deep voice didnt fit the character well
Doug Jones is always a treat to watch. His physicality and willingness to wear heavy makeup is outstanding. And on top of it, he seems like a really good person.
David Hyde Pierce Dubbed him in Hellboy but when he heard Doug’s original voice he made sure he stepped out of Hellboy 2 so Doug can take full credit.
Kudos to Pierce.
He even refused to be credited in Hellboy 1
The weird thing was David and Doug sound so similar that I can only assume they hired David to get another well known name into the film. Otherwise it just made no sense to dub Doug over with a guy who sounds so much like him anyway
@@richardjohnson9543 And apparently David said he literally just tried to copy Doug's vocals and performance. He refused credit, he skipped the premiere. He didn't want to take anything away from Doug.
Wasn't Doug sick, or something, during Hellboy 1, and that's why he was dubbed? I think I heard that somewhere. Am I wrong?
@@tyrongkojy Totally wrong. Some executive wanted more of a marquee voice that’s why David Hyde Pierce got hired.
Great tidbit:
The other English dub-over was David Hyde Pierce doing Abe Sapien (uncredited),
he refused to take credit out of respect for Jones's performance. That's awesome.
Yeah, I heard he tried to make it sound like Doug’s voice, and in Hellboy 2, Doug tried to make it sound like david
Thanks, I was wondering what the other film was. 👍
@@patrickgraham4794 That's interesting because I remember being aware that they kept Doug Jones' voice for the second one, and I remember thinking "This guy sounds like David Hyde Pierce anyway! Why did they even bother dubbing him in the first one?!"
Worked with Doug on a small independent film back in the mid 2000's and he was absolutely fantastic. Humble, down to earth, incredibly talented and just a wonderful person. Truly a treasure in this industry!
Oh, oh, what's the name? I love indie movies.
@@celiashen5490 It was never completed but Doug got all his shots in. Not sure if it will ever be finished to be honest, the director has all the tapes but it's been on hold for the past 15 years. It was an original short based on the works of HP Lovecraft and Doug played the creature. He was hilarious and awesome and did the project as a favor for the director.
@@bps3013 Sounds like a lovey adventure. That's awesome!
This man is amazing, and he’s HILARIOUS as the Baron in the What We Do In The Shadows series. If you haven't seen him in that, definitely check him out.
Baron Half An Ass
SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS
The man is just incredible at his chosen specialty. He manages to get subtle nuances of emotion through all those prosthetics, when other actors fight to just get intelligible words out.
I've met Doug at a few horror cons and he's legit like the nicest guy ever. He genuinely is interested in his fans and cares about what they have to say.
David Hyde-Pierce I think after making Hellboy was like...."So, why didn't you just have the guy playing Abe do the dialogue?"
Doug Jones is so awesome in every role he does. A consummate professional willing to undertake the requirements of a punishing make-up schedule and then giving unforgettable performances every time.
I REEEEEEAALLLY hope doug portrays silver surfer again in MCU.
I met Doug once at a comic book convention and he was the humblest person I met at one of those events
Love him!!! Learning how to say your lines properly in another language is commendable. And his body language is amazing.
I've met the guy, he's one of the nicest people in the industry, always giving praise and respect to his fellow actors..
Everyone should watch what we do in the shadows, Doug is one of the best recurring characters and it's another role tailored to his talents.
Doug has always been a class act at the cons. He's an amazing talent and a great dude.
He said thank heavens and then corrected himself and said thank heaven
That was very intentional and I respect the hell out of that man
Conviction is rare in celebrities especially when it’s about something other than themselves
I went to the same highschool as Mr. Jones and he visited during his Mac the Night ad campaign. He's a great talent and I wish he could play the Silver Surfer and do the voice.
I would 100% watch a Baron/The Sire sitcom. This guy is great.
HE And Alan Tudyk are absolutely phenomenal! Such Range and ability is awe inspiring these guys are masters of their trade.
The French movie where Doug plays a creature version of Serge Gainsbourg is Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life, directed by the cartoonist by Joann Sfar.
Sfar wanted the movie to be progressively haunted by grotesque puppets and monsters, as Gainsbourg slowly destroyed himself with drug addiction at the end of his life.
Ooooo, so does this mean we could get him back as Norrin in the MCU but with his voice instead of Fishburne? That prospect is very exciting to me.
Hire this guy for everything. He's awesome and he works really hard to sell these characters.
I had no idea he did the Spanish speaking lines in Pan's Labyrinth. Impressive.
I thought he did a lip sync. I'm a native speaker and I thought a Spaniard did the dialogue. It's definitely quite impressive!
@@andiehernandez1995 he studied Spanish and was doing the lines but in the end Del Toro actually DID hire another actor to do a voice over for the character, so who were actually hearing is Pablo Adán.
He did for acting but it was dubbed for the final cut
So excited to get a chance to meet Doug Jones in person this summer 😁
i love him so much!! i’ve been a fan since Hocus Pocus
Doug is a gift
This guy is a genius. Love his work very much
I'm a huge fan of Doug Jones! He's so underrated!
Watching him speak all the languages on Discovery is fun!
Having an Oscar on the shelf certainly helps!
Doug is my hero.
I can kind of understand dubbing over the Silver Surfer if the filmmakers felt they wanted a different sounding voice to Doug's. And I get that having Fishburne's name on the poster at the time was considered bigger than having Doug's name there. I didn't understand the Hellboy dubbing at all. David Hyde Pierce has almost the exact same sounding voice to Doug and David's name on a poster at that time would not have brought in anymore viewers than having Doug's name on the poster. It also seemed like such a waste of time and money. That one always annoyed me.
It still adds prestige. And it attracts press attention, you are always going to get more interviews based on David Hyde Pierce, or at least at that time
The very first teaser for FF Rise of the Silver Surfer had Doug’s voice, it was great. It was a shame that they dubbed him for that movie
Get a chuckle every time out of the show title being Russell Brand’s song title from Forgetting About Sarah Marshall. Great content, appreciate it and please keep it up.
Fear itself. The Wendigo..scary! This guy is awesome!!
props to David Hyde Pierce for giving up his credit for Hellboy 1 after realising he'd be stealing credit
doug jones is just the best
Didn't know there was a filmed version of this podcast
For those wondering, the two times he was dubbed in English were as Abe Sapien in the first Hellboy movie (by David Hyde Pierce) and in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (by Laurence Fishburne).
A man who found his thing, put the effort in and *nailed* it.
I don’t understand who would voice over Doug Jones (the 2 that were are probably not as good as they could have been). He is SO versatile that if you don’t like how he does something, ask him if he can do it differently and he can. Kudos for putting that in your contract Doug!
I don't know, David Hyde Pierce did a great job with his voice acting. But when they let Doug's own vocals stand in the sequel, they made for one of the better performances in that film.
I love him in What We Do in the Shadows
The Legendary Doug Jones
This dude is a hard worker. Silver Surfer was not an easy roll to play; many long hours in a ridiculous green-screen suit, crappy weather, etc.
I just cant take my eyes off his hand movements and finger dexterity
Doug is the best. My favorite rile is in What we do in the shadows hes so funny AF
To this day I still can't believe the channel batinthesun got him to play Riddler for their Batman fan film. What a perfect choice
He shows up in the Falllout fan series Nuka Cola.
@@JnEricsonx I didn't know that either. Awesome
this man was in almost every good horror/ fantasy movie. playd in some even Multiple characters
Doug is a legend!
I love his character work on Discovery as Saru.
Although I love Laurence Fishburne in the Surfer Doug has got a beautifully deep sensitive voice and he could have played the part and you've got to wonder why were they paying the extra person I mean let's be honest I know he was Morpheus but I don't know whether there's so much pull that it's worth paying the extra
I could understand wanting to dub over a suit performer if they were purely about the physicality and just didn't have a good voice, but Doug has such a great voice and delivery, I don't know why they would ever want to dub over him in the first place.
I do think he would of killed it, but L Fish did a great job you can't lie
Stop lying.
@@afrodemon8629 yes I'm lying on a UA-cam comment sorry guys you got me 😂
Wasn't this guy Mac Tonight back in the 80s? Always pops up from time to time.
Comic book Silver Surfer fan here:
As much as I enjoy the craft of Laurence Fishburne, Doug Jones has the superior voice for the Silver Surfer. I would fully support him returning as Norrin Radd in a future Surfer film. This absolutely is his role and he deserves a film to show it. A well made film.
Doug Jones is great, He is such a amazing actor! He is truly a chameleon!
fairly sure he's a human
I was pissed off when they replaced his voice as the silver surfers, he sounded perfect👌
He has a great voice! 👍
Love his character Saru in Star Trek.
This man deserves all the awards and more acknowledgment! A complete chameleon! Never saw a movie and immediately thought “that’s blah playing himself”. I always become lost in the story and character then think “that has to be Doug Jones, no one else pulls that off!”
I thought the first movie I'd seen him in was "Raze". Woke up in the middle of the night and it was on. Felt like a fever dream... Weird as hell. Lol. I didn't realize he is in so many damn movies!
I wonder what his silver surfer would have sounded like. Would he try to match fishburnes bass? Or take it in a different direction? Could he pull of a strong and imposing voice? I'd love to hear his take
You can hear him in the original trailers. It's great
Doug Jones is the goat when it comes to monster suit guys.
Huh. Wasn't aware he was pissed about the Silver Surfer voiceover.
im so glad to get to see him in hocus pocus 2 i really liked him as billy 😂
I love love love this show!
I love him in WWDITS!!
Doug Jones is a cool guy. He appeared in an indy film co-written by my cousin.
Incredible human being.
I believe he played "creepy jail guard" in SoA and watched Gemma get railed by Clay.
Saru is my fav Star Trek character
I did not expect to see lex luthor when I tapped on this video. 👀
Andy Serkis and Doug Jones should be cast in a movie together.
Keep it up we will never starve
nice context
Omg!
Silver surfer is my ultimate super hero crush ❤❤
Idk he did his dubbing 😅
Impresionante.
You know Doug would make an interesting Freddy Kruger because of his natural uniqueness.
I freaked out when I first seen him credited as billy from hocus pocus
Yoooo lol
Lex Luthor/Wally West interviewing Abe Sapien/Silver Surfer!!!! Yes!!! 🤣😁
Impressive 💖
I am dying to see his remake of Nosferatu, he filmed it a few years ago.
He is great as Baron Afanas in “What We Do in the Shadows” tv series
This randomly popped up and when I checked it out, I had been unsubscribed somehow. The upside is now I have a few months of back log to binge, but odd that it happened.
As soon as Doug Jones said he'd been dubbed twice in English, I immediately knew which movies he was referring to: Rise of the Silver Surfer and HellBoy.
He would have been a perfect cast for Cletus Kasady/ Carnage.
With all the prosthetics he's had to wear over the years I genuinely thought Doug Jones was bald when not playing a character flawlessly.
Wow 😮
I enjoyed that movie but I've never watched it since it's release. It's too sad.
Is this the same actor that portrayed a guy possessed by a Wendigo on an episode of Fear Itself? If so, he's damn good.
Doug is right to do that if he’s the one doing the acting, he learns his lines, then is put in a chair for make up a good portion of the day and then doing all that physical acting under those hot show light Only to dubbed which it unfair to him and the work this man puts into bring characters to life.
i love silver surfer and fantastic four and dog jone"s
