I respectfully disagree. "Superman" felt to me like a bumbling fool throughout this scene, especially with that dumbfounded expression on his face when the jetliner's wing finally gave way and broke loose (d-oh!). I got caught up in the excitement of the moment in the movies for sure, but the scene ultimately doesn't do a great job in showing him to be as extremely intelligent as Superman is supposed to be. Not by a longshot.
Brandon was a brilliant Superman, he captured what made Christopher Reeves Superman so endearing and iconic, he pulled off what no other actor could have, he stepped into Reeves shoes and filled them. Big mistake letting him go. Bring him back.
@georgetsioup2884 He was better than Cavil this for sure!!! For me he was the most bland Superman with no personality.. he was basically the same as both characters and that's a fact. However that comes down to the writing and directing. Routh captured both Clark & Superman.
As a 40 year old he really WAS the next Superman to me. When that movie came out it just felt perfect to me. The airplane scene is still a top piece of demo material to showcase spectacular home theater systems.
i have been having to debate with people for years. EVERYONE goes on about a bad script. i loved that movie, i dont think the script was bad at all and its certainly the last time a Superman movie felt like a Superman movie to me. we are still dealing with this thing where people today seem to want Superman to just be Batman, they just want non stop action scenes with no character development or emotion.
'Superman Returns' is better than 'Man of Steel'. The big issues I had with Returns was they took on too much if they had left out the 'Son of' angle they would have been better off. Returns fits with the first 3 original movies (or 2 movies if you don't like 3 -4 is hated by everyone.) The action sequences in MoS were over done, they did not have to repeat the Superman II story line with Zod.
@@jaredmartin7040 I respectfully disagree. The biggest sin of that movie was Pa Kent telling him that maybe he should have let those kids die to prevent his identity from being revealed. That thread of terrible writing continued throughout the movie.
Brandon was an excellent Superman and a real shame he didn't get to do one or two more. Superman Returns is a beautiful movie, have watched it several times.
I thought the movie was flawed, but Routh wasn't the flaw as Clark/Supes. It was the story and the directing and even some of the dodgy CG visual effects. IMHO
I will forever say this... Brandon did great as Superman. He's the reason why I still like the film. It could have been better, yes, but people were way too harsh about it and his career caught the backlash. So unfair. I would have welcomed a sequel to see them get it right.
Totally agree! I was looking for to see what's gonna happen with his son. Half man half alien😊 imagine if he turned out to be more powerful and eventually no weakness. Just call him ultra man😂
Glad to see Superman Returns didn't end his career, I've enjoyed everything I've seen Routh in & it makes me smile to see his continued success (it also helps that a lot of his projects have been geek-oriented, which I enjoy). And Crisis was just a reminder of why he's still great for the role of Superman
I agree, for the most part. He's a wonderful actor to the Arrowverse and other TV and movie projects, but there's one movie of his that I didn't care for: _Dylan Dog._ It puzzle me, too, because I have no idea why the movie left me feeling empty. Everything was there: the acting, story structure, production value...but the film didn't resonate with me. By the time it was over, I was still waiting for it to start. It's not even a forgettable movie, either--I can still recall certain scenes even though I've only watched it once. But yeah, outside of _Dylan Dog_ I like all of Brandon's roles.
@@LostHope84 he’s been in plenty since then. TV movies, other shows like Chuck. Just because you haven’t watched doesn’t take that away. Plus he’s had a steady job in the arrow-verse since 2014. I call that success in itself. Most actors would love that kind of steady work.
It did killed his career. He’s supposed to be a B-lister at best in 2022, but the movie tanked so bad to the point that he’s a D-list actor now. Sucks.
It's really quite amazing in the context of this clip that Brandon reprised his role as Superman that very year. I remember everyone being so absolutely hyped for him. It was like a great injustice had been rectified. Brandon's just that kind of actor where every time you see him, you're happy.
The writers on that show really did him a solid, too. When he was introduced, he could have easily been just another villain of the week, albeit a really good one, but no, they had to go and make him a great character instead where you never really could tell what his motivations were and if he was actually good, or bad, or maybe a bit of both. His character was developed really well on that show!
I met Brandon Routh very briefly at a convention in 2017; aside from his making me look short in the picture (we're about the same height), which I'm going to get mileage out of for the rest of my life, I found him to be a very likeable and, honestly, humble person. Like he was happy to be there and happy to be meeting with the fans. I'm not particularly fond of Superman Returns, but after meeting him and seeing his return to Superman in Crisis on Infinite Earths, I'd happily see him put on the cape again.
That scene with the airplane is just so good imo, perfect big set piece for a superman movie. Feels like all the creativity of the movie went into that, because the rest is just a complete flatline. Basically, nothing else happens.
Brandon Routh wasn't the problem with Superman Returns at all. It's that they just did 1978's Superman beat-by-beat with flimsy new window dressing. Superman going away for a mission and then returning to Earth to realize a lot has changed and perhaps the world has moved on from him and his style of heroism is a fantastic story on its own but it was bogged down by the structure and outline of the 1978 film which prevented anything new or exciting from happening that would make the film its own. That's part of the reason why Zack Snyder went his own way with "Man of Steel" so that there wouldn't be anything from past films holding it back. Yet people complained that it wasn't enough like the 1978 movie. It's no wonder Superman hasn't gotten another solo film. People can't make up their minds over what the hell they want from his movies.
lex walked in his fortress of solitude and steals whatever he can grab. It's called a fortress. You would thing it is well protected and intented to be difficult for enemies to enter. They made a simple movie. Nice to watch but the story could be from a child.
It also doesn't help that people have such ridiculous expectations for how Superman should act and handle certain situations and won't let him actually be a character.
One of my favourite scenes with Rosenbaum as Lex was in Season 3 Ep 19 (Memoria) when he got his memory back about whether he did kill his brother as a child and then told his Dad. Always gets me in tears.
Honestly, he will always be my Superman. I'll forever wish he had been given another chance in a stronger Superman movie because he really was born for the role
I definitely didn’t think he was the problem with that movie. I didn’t think Bosworth did a good Lois and the story was lacking. The airplane scene in the beginning is, to this day, one of my favorite Superman moments. I thought it was an awesome display of his power and control, especially when he flys through the wing, and I thought it was something that Henry Cavill’s Superman built upon with his fight with Zod.
Went to watch this movie on my 7th birthday and I have to say, this is one of my favourite movies of all time just because of Brandon’s portrayal of Superman. The confidence, the passion, enthusiasm and emotional range he showcased was absolutely astounding. Extremely gutted that the higher ups let their own egos take centre stage when this man literally brought superman into the 21st Century, with finesse might I add
Brandon routh deserves to continue his role as his and christopher reeve superman, he is amazing as superman and i keep praying we get a show for his kingdom come superman on hbo max.
I thought Superman Returns was actually a really good film. I also thought Brandon Routh did a great job as Superman. I think it was just released at the wrong time or something. He deserved a second chance at playing Superman.
never underestimate the chances of a comeback the moment an actor becomes more mature...i can see brandon becomin an A list actor within the next few years, just needs the right movie
Blockbuster roles I could see him in: 1. A James Bond or Mission impossible villain 2. A Transformer (I could see him doing the voice of Rodimus Prime) 3. A scientist type (evil or good) 4. The protagonist in a sci fi or natural disaster type movie.
"You know you really shouldn't smoke Miss Lane" Delivered with brilliance. That rooftop scene, the logistics of flying, the warmth Brandon brought to the role was staggering. When he walked on to the plane "Is everyone alright"..and stood there, I had to do a double take. Brilliance. Will always be a special actor for that
for the record, Rosenbaum is the BEST Lex!! he wasn't just an antagonist who was out there to wreak havoc on Superman but he was also charismatic, vulnerable & charming but cunning and cold at the same time... i was always at the edge of my seat, very scared of the 'potential' evil he can do yet he always held back... which made his Lex even more intimidating. he was sooo effective that i crushed on him instead of Welling who was a full course meal in the looks dept and the most endearing portrayal of Clark... and THAT takes only a very magnetic personification of Lex. Rosey, you did that! I hope you find another project that will be your next acting playground.
As an actor myself, i feel him so much. I know very well what it is to have horrible auditions and not be ready or take years meditating on what went wrong and self entitlement. Keep it up, your a Superman no matter what. Thanks Lex.
@@buttertoast1146 I think we have different perceptions on what is an actor. Some actors have done amazing and very special things yet never get worldwide recognition or exposure.
Look at Dave Batista, did a few films that sucked, auditioned for GoTG and then took acting classes, took other films that were smaller roles and smaller budgets that really challenged his acting to be serious. Did low budget comedy films as well. He never got full of himself and always went in like he had to do the best he can.
His filmography is still terrible and forgettable, including GOTG. A lot of these generic WWE stars still trying to do the Rock's career thing but they are third rate in comparison.
I loved Brandon Routh as Superman, both in the film and in the Arrowverse. His performances in this role have been outstanding. He deserved and deserves exceptional success. Love and best wishes to Brandon and his family.

Me too. It still gets viewed every single day by people around the World. It is on Worldwide streaming lately. If you are an actor and are cast to play the role of Superman, just the offer should make you feel good. Brandon Routh is skilled at playing super hero's and mad genius type roles.
@@Powerhaus88 I like Cavill. He was great in Man from Uncle, Witcher, and among other things, so I know he's a good actor, I would never take that away from him. However no his superman is one of the worst Supermans out there. I blame it on the script, but at this point, he's just not superman to me, no matter what he does.
Brandon Routh was a great maybe the best Superman in my opinion. He perfectly captured the pure essence of Christopher Reeve Superman but also becoming his own Superman. During Crisis on Infinite Earths his Superman stole the show everytime he appeared, hell he even stole the show when Ray Palmer appeared, how does an actor steal the show from himself. Hopefully we get to see Brandon as Superman in more projects because he was amazing
Routh was so good! he had a suit with weird cut (what were those .. Bikini briefs?) - cyan and maroon colours in some of the colour grading and the mish mash of Singer taking a 1970s-1980s film series and making a pseudo sequel, making Lois completely different, making the design language something out of the 40s to 60s then using 2006 technology like the computers and mobile phones. also made it nearly impossible to make a solid sequel because of the complexity of the Super-Kids (clarks son) and made menacing Kevin Spacey into a sometimes Campy Lex for no reason. he was vindicated by his reappearance as a version of Clark in the CW crossover event - brilliant and instantly conveyed the honour and sincerity of Superman when he stepped into his very first scene
Superman Returns is the film that got me into the Superman character and is my favorite as I didn't grow up with the Reeve films. I'm glad I got to meet Brandon Routh briefly in 2013 around the time Man of Steel came out.
It's funny you should say that because that's what's happening with Affleck, Pattinson and Keaton. They're all gonna be Batman but from different timelines. Exited to see Keaton reprise his role. Maybe they're gonna do the same for Superman
They did bring him back to that role on the CW crossover last season, and they are brining Affleck and Keaton back for the Flash movie. They could always do another movie that picks up from there, especially since Cavill is probably done with the role now. They'll just need a new director and if they want Lex Luthor, someone new for that role as well
Really love how self aware he has become. Brandon's Superman turn was well done, the script just had people upset. His actual performance was excellent though. Things should have worked out differently, but he has come to terms with things well it seems.
I never blamed him for Superman Returns, I thought he was the best part, I always thought he deserved a sequel! If CW had half a brain they would give him a Kingdom Come series... In the Crisis crossover, he killed it..he is much better than that wimpy ass Superman they have now...
It's a shame that they only made one movie with Routh in the lead. That one remains my favorite of all the films. Would love to have seen him in sequels!
This is such good content. its a reality check, to not be complacent. Michael was an awesome Lex, and Brandon played Superman with a beautiful calmness that exuded power. I know we can't help but compare him to Reeve, and yes he kind of took the baton, but Brandon put his stamp on it, and he is Superman in his own right.
This guy is one of my favorite actors in the D.C. universe. To me he is and should have been the one and only Superman. I’m glad they had him play as Atom in Legends, he was one of my favorite characters. No such thing as being to nice.
What a humble guy! I have never seen an actor speak of themselves in such a realistic (and negative, mind you) way as Brandon does in this clip. He was the absolute best part of Superman Returns. He reminded me of Christopher Reeves without trying to act like Reeves. Heck, even his sense of humor just perfectly fit the Superman character. Too bad the writing was meh, and the direction- and I’m a fan of Singer- was subpar.
He’s literally admitting he was arrogant and difficult to work with. Just because he is saying he isn’t like that how doesn’t make it true. In my experience when you give people a second chance and they say they’ve changed you get more of the same.
@@AnyoneCanSee With all due respect, this is quite a cynical way of looking at others. This suggested “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” chokehold against others means no one can be genuinely humble. It takes a great deal of humility to admit you were wrong, greater still to admit you were arrogant. That’s what Brandon exemplified to me in this clip.
You should watch interviews with Christopher Reeve from the late 70s / early 80s, if you think Brandon Routh was humble. Then, you'll see the difference between someone who 'really' was humble, versus this guy, who isn't.
Routh is a great Donner-era Superman. His take on Earth-2 Supes was so amazing. Shit gave me goosebumps. This was an awesome interview. #LexAnClark #HeroesInCrisis

Love Routh. He was a great Superman. The movie was boring, not his fault, his scenes were great. I hated the casting of Lois Lane, Lex Luther and Luther’s girlfriend.
Routh was excellent. He had the nobility of Superman (one of Superman's PRIMARY traits, regardless of what others (who likely have only seen Superman in movies) think. That was what made him the greatest hero in the galaxy. His nobility. And Routh captured that aspect better than anyone, even Chris Reeves (when the first Superman movie came out, I was older than Reeves, (who was 24), so I saw him differently. He just happened to be the first Superman, and he was good-natured, but he wasn't what Superman was in the comic books. Close to it, but not as good as Routh was. Bosworth was the least believable "Lois Lane." Gene hackman as Luthor was just a caricature. Spacey was actually a better Luthor: malevolent and dangerous. By the way, Lex Luthor NEVER had a girlfriend in the comic books. EVER. So, that part was all made-up movie junk they threw in for comedic relief. Eisenberg was okay Luthor but would have been better had he been older. Watching him on the screen as Lex Luthor was like looking at a spoiled kid playing Lex Luthor, the evil mastermind. i don't even know why Eisenberg was auditioned. Probably because he'd played Mark Zuckerber, but as Luthor?? Not credible to anyone over 50 who'd read Superman for years, never mind someone approaching 70.
Bosworth was too young to be Lois. She is meant to be older than Clark and in this film she'd already had a son. Casting was way off here. Same with Eisenberg casting. Too young to be Lex Luthor.
i personally love that film and think Routh was spectacular, i was never bored during it. i completely agree the casting of Lex and Lois was bad. Parker Posey is an awesome actress and i sort of like what her character brought to the film, the only person on Lexes team that had some moral compass and starts to grasp the full consequences of what he was attempting to do. she probably could have pulled off a much better Lois.
I like Routh, but he wasn't a great actor back then. He was mimicking Reeve's performance, but there was nothing really distinguishable between his Clark and his Superman. Reeve sold the idea that they are two different people. And although Routh was around the same age as Reeve when they played the role, Routh doesn't come across as a bigger than life man. Even to this day, he has more of a teenage look. Yes, I know the script for SR wasn't great, but Routh didn't elevate anything he was in. Whereas Reeve did. Superman 4 was crap, but anytime Reeve was on film, you forget how crap the movie was. SR had horrible casting on almost all fronts, from Lois, Lex, to Perry White. Routh had no chemistry with Bosworth. The Superkid can work in the right context, but Bosworth doesn't sell the idea that she is a mom. So, I never believed her or their relationship. While Routh's Superman did feel like a continuation of Reeve, nothing else did.
Talking to actors about the actual experiences of being on set...auditioning...this is a good show. You are definitely going INSIDE....kudos Michael!!!
Such a shame that Brandon didn't get a better Superman movie. With a great script, he would've been my second favorite Superman of all time. He nailed the role of Clark & Superman extremely well. No chance of Brandon ever seeing this comment probably, but if so, I just want to say thank you & God bless.

REEVE!
Brandon is perfect at Superman.
I agree. I was thrilled when that movie appeared.
People kissing ass majorly, he was OK not great.

The airplane scene is still a top piece of demo material to showcase spectacular home theater systems.
that scene tops Snyders Superman action clips for me!Man of Steel had Superman screaming every 2nd time he flew!
@@bernhardtsen74 Man of Steel was a great movie though nearly flawless imo
i have been having to debate with people for years.
This is so mature of him, it takes a lot to openly admit that you've messed up in the past.
IMHO
@@dan_hitchman007 completely agree
i'm glad he got to be Kingdom come superman on Arrow
I will forever say this... Brandon did great as Superman. He's the reason why I still like the film.
It could have been better, yes, but people were way too harsh about it and his career caught the backlash.
So unfair. I would have welcomed a sequel to see them get it right.
Yes. I think the script was weak, but his turn at Superman was great.
He came back as super on Arrow
lmao... success? What has he done since Superman other than Legends?
Man I loved his version of Superman. He both honored Reeve's version from the movies and yet also had his own style as well.
I loved Brandon in Chuck. Really a good showcase of his versatility as an actor.

I didn’t like superman returns but Brandon was a good superman though.
not the best, definitely, but at least better accepted by movie critics than JL & other later DC movies.

@@hotrodhendrix1 Exactly. They could've went the Deadpool route and rebooted the franchise with the same actor and it probably would've worked.

True. Good points.
lex walked in his fortress of solitude and steals whatever he can grab. It's called a fortress. You would thing it is well protected and intented to be difficult for enemies to enter. They made a simple movie. Nice to watch but the story could be from a child.
MOS was a perfect movie and aged like fine wine.
It also doesn't help that people have such ridiculous expectations for how Superman should act and handle certain situations and won't let him actually be a character.
They have another thing in common. Brandon did an amazing job as Superman, Michael did so as Luthor... the best on-screen Luthor, in my opinion.
One of my favourite scenes with Rosenbaum as Lex was in Season 3 Ep 19 (Memoria) when he got his memory back about whether he did kill his brother as a child and then told his Dad. Always gets me in tears.
Lionel Luthor is the best on screen luthor in my opinion.

The confidence, the passion, enthusiasm and emotional range he showcased was absolutely astounding. also made it nearly impossible to make a solid sequel because of the complexity of the Super-Kids (clarks son) and made menacing Kevin Spacey into a sometimes Campy Lex for no reason.

Superman Returns was the last Superman movie I saw in the theater.
Bosworth was the least believable "Lois Lane."
Gene hackman as Luthor was just a caricature.
I agree sooo much with everything you just said!!!!

@@theinvincibleironman5629 you mean snyder can't write strylines. Everyone in his universe is sad and angry and dealing with problems 24/7. He has amazing movies its his writing that sucks. If Cavill had a good script he wouldve been good.
Loved Brandon in Legends of Tomorrow and he was awesome as Kingdom Come Superman in the crossover.
I really liked “Superman Returns”. Brandon did a fantastic job as Superman.
Brandon was awesome as Superman. He’s great in the arrow verse. He plays my favorite evil ex in Scott Pilgrim. Dudes good at what he does
Asked my wife about Brandon and Henry, she said Brandon is perfect as superman, and that Henry makes a better representation for a modern superman. I kinda nod
The modern Superman isn't even what Superman is. Just a dude with Superman powers.
@@captlanc yea kinda, i dunno, i'm just a fan of both, but i'd love a brandon superman with some big action in the movie. Something i've always wanted from a Superman movie since reeve's vs nuclear man.
Michael... I honestly think you have given the best lex ever... thank you!!!
