    @Hailey Cusimano : Thank-you for the wonderful session. Key takeaway: Look for generalization, Precision of language, and Gaps in logics. "Conflated" word does makes a lot of sense. Thank you again.

    Wonderfully insightful session. I hadn’t been trying to identify the gaps in the arguments earlier and used to find assumption questions especially difficult but this session addressed a lot of the “gaps” in my preparation perfectly.
    Thank you Hailey for sharing such great explanations and applications of the concept!

    Assumptions do not guarantee the validity of the argument. Now that's one of the reasons I was going wrong. Thanks Hailey, I definitely understand how to answer these questions better.

      This video was a specifically requested topic, asking us GMAT experts to explain alternate ways to frame Assumption questions without needing to rely on negation, or by explaining the theory behind why negation works! So, on test day, use whatever way of verbalizing the answer choices makes the most sense to you! :) The negation technique is a solid start - but if you find yourself struggling to understand what to negate, and what the complement of an answer choice might be, remember, what you're testing is whether the answer is necessary to the integrity of the argument: whether it has to be true for the argument to make sense. I hope this helps!

    Hi,
    The conclusion is the jackmani is the most popular clematis vine. Option A is strengthening the premise or filling the gap b/w the missing logic in the premise. Option A cant really strengthen the conclusion. Also, the conclusion initially talks about popularity, is it safe to assume that the one most sold is the most popular?
    I have always solved questions by first finding the conclusion and trying to find the missing part in the conclusion. Can "assumptions" be in the premise?

    • @haileycusimano
      @haileycusimano Рік тому +2

      Hi there! Happy to clarify! An assumption does not necessarily need to add validity to the argument. It's what would need to be true for the argument to have a foundation. So, while A doesn't make the argument bulletproof, it would need to be true for the argument to even have a leg to stand on. If (A) were untrue... if there were only 10, or 9, or 8 etc. varieties of Clematis, the argument couldn't possibly make sense, as 10% couldn't possibly be the highest percent. An assumption is something that is necessary to the argument, something that would have to be true for the argument to even have a chance to be sound.
      To your question about most sold = most popular, I see where you're coming from, but it wouldn't make much sense to use the data: 10% are jackmanii, to draw the conclusion that it's the most popular if 10% weren't the highest percent, would it? Thus, (A) would need to be true to bridge the gap between evidence and conclusion - our job on this question.
      Your strategy of starting with the conclusion and working your way out is definitely one I recommend! If we begin with the conclusion, we can find what supports it - its premise. From there, the assumption is what would have to be true to connect the dots between the two, or what would have to be true to use the evidence cited to draw the given conclusion. I hope that helps!

    Hi, Hailey, IMHO, in the question about clematis THE ONLY good way to explain why A is the correct answer is to apply the negation technique. And so did you, did you not? WHAT IF there were LESS than 10 varieties?...Yeah, then the argument would be destroyed. What is it, if not negation?..

    • @haileycusimano
      @haileycusimano 3 роки тому +1

      Hey, Alexey! This video was a response to folks on the form specifically asking for suggestions on tackling assumption questions without flat-out negating each answer choice. So yes! We can (and did in a way) address the logic behind (A) using negation; I just chose to phrase it a bit more generally to explain *why* negation works above and beyond "take the compliment of each answer." I hope that helps to clarify! The negation technique (as long as you understand why it works) is a fantastic strategy - I was just tying back to why it works :)

  • @SM_Lil_Explorer
    @SM_Lil_Explorer Рік тому

    could negation technique have been applied in these qstns?

    • @haileycusimano
      @haileycusimano Рік тому +1

      The negation technique could absolutely be applied in any of these examples - we just went through a different way of verbalizing the same logic :)

    Variety A sells at 20%, Clamentis sells at 10% , and 10 other varieties sell at 7% each. How can A be a must for the conclusion to hold true?

    • @haileycusimano
      @haileycusimano Рік тому

      Hi, Nitin! I think what has you caught up is that the assumption doesn't guarantee the validity of the argument. So, you're totally right that even if there are 10 or fewer varieties of clematis sold, another variety *could* be the most popular. The key here is that if (A) were untrue, 10% couldn't *feasibly* be the highest percent, so it would no longer make any sense to use the given evidence to draw the given conclusion. Does that clarify at all?
