1. Guidebook writer: I have visited hotels throughout the country and have noticed that in those built before 1930 the quality of the original carpentry work is generally superior to that in hotels built afterward. Clearly carpenters working on hotels before 1930 typically worked with more skill, care, and effort than carpenters who have worked on hotels built subsequently. Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the guidebook writer’s argument? (A) The quality of original carpentry in hotels is generally far superior to the quality of original carpentry in other structures, such as houses and stores. (B) Hotels built since 1930 can generally accommodate more guests than those built before 1930. (C) The materials available to carpenters working before 1930 were not significantly different in quality from the materials available to carpenters working after 1930. (D) The better the quality of original carpentry in a building, the less likely that building is to fall into disuse and be demolished. (E) The average length of apprenticeship for carpenters has declined significantly since 1930. Warning: this one appears in the GMATPrep tests! 2. Male bowerbirds construct elaborately decorated nests, or bowers. Basing their judgment on the fact that different local populations of bowerbirds of the same species build bowers that exhibit different building and decorative styles, researchers have concluded that the bowerbirds’ building styles are a culturally acquired, rather than a genetically transmitted, trait. Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the conclusion drawn by the researchers? A. There are more common characteristics than there are differences among the bowerbuilding styles of the local bowerbird population that has been studied most extensively. B. Young male bowerbirds are inept at bowerbuilding and apparently spend years watching their elders before becoming accomplished in the local bower style. C. The bowers of one species of bowerbird lack the towers and ornamentation characteristic of the bowers of most other species of bowerbird. D. Bowerbirds are found only in New Guinea and Australia, where local populations of the birds apparently seldom have contact with one another. E. It is well known that the song dialects of some songbirds are learned rather than transmitted genetically. 3. In two months, the legal minimum wage in the country of Kirlandia will increase from five Kirlandic dollars (KD5.00) per hour to KD5.50 per hour. Opponents of this increase have argued that the resulting rise in wages will drive the inflation rate up. In fact its impact on wages will probably be negligible, since only a very small proportion of all Kirlandic workers are currently receiving less than KD5.50 per hour. Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument? (A) Most people in Kirlandia who are currently earning the minimum wage have been employed at their current jobs for less than a year (B) Some firms in Kirlandia have paid workers considerably less than KD5.00 per hour, in violation of kirlandic employment regulation (C) Many businesses hire trainees at or near the minimum wage but must reward trained workers by keeping their pay levels above the pay level of trainees. (D) The greatest growth in Kirlandia's economy in recent years has been in those sectors where workers earn wages that tend to be much higher than the minimum wage. (E) The current minimum wage is insufficient for a worker holding only one job to earn enough to support a family, even when working full time at that job. 4. In Swartkans territory, archaeologists discovered charred bone fragments dating back 1 million years. Analysis of the fragments, which came from a variety of animals, showed that they had been heated to temperatures no higher than those produced in experimental campfires made from branches of white stinkwood, the most common tree around Swartkans. Which of the following, if true, would, together with the information above, provide the best basis for the claim that the charred bone fragments are evidence of the use of fire by early hominids? (A) The white stinkwood tree is used for building material by the present-day inhabitants of Swartkans. (B) Forest fires can heat wood to a range of temperatures that occur in campfires. (C) The bone fragments were fitted together by the archaeologists to form the complete skeletons of several animals. (D) Apart from the Swartkans discovery, there is reliable evidence that early hominids used fire as many as 500 thousand years ago. (E) The bone fragments were found in several distinct layers of limestone that contained primitive cutting tools known to have been used by early hominids. 5. Building a space station, in which astronauts would live for a considerable time, is essential even if the space station project were to contribute no new knowledge about space or Earth that could not otherwise be obtained. For future missions to explore Mars, we will need the medical knowledge that the space station project will give us about the limits human capacities to live in spacecraft for an extended time. The argument makes the assumption that (A) the exploration of Mars will be carried out by people travelling in spacecraft and not by robots alone. (B) the capacities of astronauts are typical of those of ordinary human beings. (C) no unforeseen medical problems will arise on the first mission to explore Mars. (D) a mission to Mars will be the first of many missions that will explore the solar system. (E) living in spaceship for an extended time presents insurmountable medical problems.

In the first question I feel answer should be 'B' since it says that post 1930 hotels are more spacious than older ones, which may imply that, older carpenters lacked the skill to build bigger structures, though their structures were more durable. So older carpenters were not necessarily more skilled. But Im not sure.

I didn't understand, In the passage of "Kirlandia" I thought the answer is E since minimum wage is insufficient and increasing the minimum wage is important. The answer is here is C. Why? Can anyone explain me? pls
Hey, first of all thanks a ton for the amazing insight. However I am confused;between 3,4:in 3 u said that e is not the option as we have to imagine a lot but isn't it the same for 4)e? We gotta imagine that maybe they cut animal, cooked them etc. Etc.
In the Hominid question answer choice, E suggest that hominid used to eat meat by cutting it, doesn't necessarily mean that they were specifically using the fire to cook the meat, how is that relevant? They might be eating raw meat just by cutting it?
In question 4, choice E is wrong because we don't know if they used cutting tools to cook their food by the fire. They might cut their food to distribute the food or could be for anything. I think choice D is more probably the correct answer because they may inherit the information about using fire from their grand grand grand.. parents. IDK
Q4- we need to strengthen that charred bone fragments are evidence if the use of fire by early hominids. Option selected tells that fragments found in layer of limestone which had tools that were used by early hominids. Where is the evidence of use of fire by hominids.? Hi Charles and the GMATClub, should we have to keep the conclusion in mind while analyzing each answer choice? Or, shall I look back and forth in the argument?
i thought the answer was b beacuse that implies that if ostronuts have the same capabilities as humans then their medical limitations will be the same or similar to humans and what makes them astronuts is them being in space so maybe this implies the medical limitations will be similar so if we can study about human limits in the space station on earth we should be able to be prepared for condition on mars ( space)

Hi - quick question. I don't get why the 500k year option in Q4 was wrong. The conclusion is that charred bone fragments are evidence of use of fire by early hominids. while the paragraph provided the 1m years supporting line, the question did not ask us to stregnten the paragraph but the conclusion provided to us in the question itself. Therefore the 500k=/=1m should not be a concern. The fact that there is hard evidence 500k years ago that the conclusion is true should make it a strong choice. Please let me know where I'm going wrong. Thanks!
great video...but I have a problem with the last question of the video, actually with the answer. I think that choice C is a better than choice A. Because C states that no unforeseen (unpredicted or unexpected) medical problem will arise on the mission to explore mars. Which in turn the writer is assuming, that the medical problems that will appear on the space station are gonna be similar to those which will appear on Mars. That's why writer is assuming that it will be beneficial for the future mars expeditions......... I just think it is logically more correct than choice A. #1 C and E strengthen the arguement. I don't see how that would be the number 1 choice. A has nothing to do with pre-1930 vs post-1930 hotels. That leaves B/D. B - does not say anything about craftsmanship same as A. it's possible that since the hotels built before 1930 are smaller they received more "care and effort" than larger hotels built after 1930s. BUT the question isn't talking about care and effort put into large vs small hotels, eliminate B too much of a stretch. This leaves D which makes sense because all hotels with poor craftsmanship have been destroyed.

Holy grail!
Thank you for the kind words. Good Luck with your prep!
The first question asks which one weakens the author's argument. Then, shouldn't the answer be that hotels after 1930 can accommodate more people?
