      Welcome. Later in the series, I will be covering a complete lube & oil of this machine, with every oil & grease point and what they actually lubricate. Even on different models, it will give you ideas of what needs lubrication. Thanks for watching.

    Hi, GREAT videos! I’m preparing to do a machine by watching them a few times.
    Most of your videos have closed captioning, but this one doesn’t. I don’t know anything about UA-cam and it’s settings. Can I ask, if it’s just a switch to flip, can you do so?
    This one is rather important. I’d hate to miss something important. I can hear some, but occasionally just enough to wildly miss what’s actually said! Thanks and thank you for this, it’s amazing!

      Greetings, Jack. CC is usually automatic and I'm puzzled why this video won't show them. I've checked my settings on the video and compared them to several others that have normal CC and can't find any difference. Over the hours I've tried to add subtitles and got to a point yesterday that showed English subtitles pending with a "generating timings" status, but it has stayed that way for over 12 hours now. Yikes! I've tried contacting YT help a couple of ways but had no reply as of this time. To help you keep moving along with your 404 may I suggest this video for lubricating a model 301A? It is the generation before the 404 and most of the parts and systems are the same, but with a different style hook ua-cam.com/video/BIhupj5K3t0/v-deo.html for the rotary hook area on your 404 this video of a 403A should help. It's a long video but you can skip around to find the hook area (or watch the whole thing if you like, of course, 😀)
      ua-cam.com/video/N3oYsTBJrFI/v-deo.html With 3.3K views on this video I wonder why no one mentioned the CC problem before. If I can ever get a response and have the CC working properly I will leave another reply to your comment. Thanks for your understanding, and for watching my channel.

      @@andytubesewing1953 Hello, thank you so much for checking on it. I suspected it was a setting one could choose, or not. I didn’t mean to take up your day on it! You’ve already created a priceless treasury for owners of these machines.
      I’ll view the suggested videos, thank you for that.
      I apologize if you spent hours on this request. I truly am. I did wind up watching one where you said 404 and 500? 503? We’re very similar and some videos would suffice the needs across the series.
      I’m not against using the shower spray and bucket approach, but don’t want to think about a leaf-blower approach to drying inside and the weathers not cooperating with dryness today (or so they say)!
      Taking it apart was easy with your videos. I made the mistake of marking that presser foot bolt with a mark that came off in the Krud Kutter. Hoping you’ve got a video for us on how to register that setting without the mark, cuz it’s gone now!
      Thank you for these, it’s allowing me to create a nice and highly desired gift.

      @@jackwyatt8849 No apologies needed, Jack. It was an interesting trip down a rabbit hole and I was curious about the cause of the missing CC. After drying so many washed machines with a hairdryer I came up with the idea of using my leaf blower. It's just so much faster. My video about the presser bar includes installing it and setting the height of the presser foot above the needle plate back to the factory height. ua-cam.com/video/OaiF13ddZe8/v-deo.html Thanks for saving that machine, Jack, and take care.

      @@andytubesewing1953 thank you! I may not have completed my sentence….I’m just going to take the machine outside to dry with the leaf blower. Just in case there’s the odd oily, KK, or whatnot in the water droplets. Not wanting to clean that off the walls and ceilings. My blower is very strong and it always gets away from me when I first turn it on. I have to wrangle it as one would a wild mustang. 😄

    From what I see here is this machine is gear driven without any belts, I was wondering because as you remember I am trying to get my friends machine running. I think that it may need a new foot pedal. It works but is a little hesitant about starting. I hear a clicking sounds like it is coming from the top of the machine.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  7 років тому

      Correct, no belts on this model. I only remember you saying it sews a nice stitch. Hesitant starting can be the foot controller needs adjusting. It could also be sticky stuff in the face, like dirty needle bar, thread take-up levers. Have you looked/cleaned the needle bar area? Clicking up top is too vague. Is it above the needle bar area? Or closer to the motor end of the machine? Is the take-up lever hitting the top cover?
      Here is a link to a foot peddle rebuild I did awhile back for a 37 restore. Not my best video, but not too bad. It is 2 parts. Maybe it can help you.

    Andy, can you recommend a brand of motor grease please? It's for a potted motor. I opened the hand wheel and cleaned outthe disgusting mess. That's as far as I was brave enough to go. (For now).

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  5 років тому

      Singer still makes their motor lubricant, although some people say it is not as good as their old formula. www.google.com/search?q=singer+potted+motor+lubricant&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj0g4XcmfjgAhX0HDQIHTwsByYQ_AUIDigB&biw=1920&bih=975
      Some people like to use this more modern formulated motor lubricant. singer-featherweight.com/products/sew-retro-grease?variant=18303537283
