I am so happy to see you well and back on UA-cam. Hubby and I were married 65 years and I loved repairing old machines and bringing them back to life. He has been goon 4 years now and I have had to give up repairing machines because I can't lift them, tight screws etc., he did all that for me. I do so love to watch you bring machines back to life and useful again so thank you so much for coming back and letting us watch.

It is wonderful seeing you and hearing you back. You are very missed and loved by all.
BTW, your wife bought you that machine because she loves you, and knows that you need to keep occupied.
Pity that Singer took such a cheap way out. Manufacturing costs for steel vs plastic gears was about $1.00 per machine, $10.00 @ retail. Timing belt about $5.00 cost, $25 @ retail. Pity.

.95 amp motor. I wish I had that much juice in my 404 and 503. Looks like a great project. My wife told me once I needed a hobby when I got laid off from the railroad (I was driving her nuts). I took up violin repair. After about 6 years of repairing and playing fiddles I quit the railroad and got a job repairing violins full time. I ended up doing it for almost 24 years until I retired. I started sewing about 7 years ago and started sewing dog winter boots with a plastic geared Singer. I saw a Singer 503 on Craigs list about 140 miles from my house. $250 with all the basic accessories. It needed a little work so I went on UA-cam and found Andy Tube. I cleaned it and rebuilt the motor. I taught myself to replace the drive end bearing of the motor (bent the shaft on the first one) and used that to sew back packs and lots of other kinds of outdoor gear. It was a little down on power for the heavy nylon so I found a Singer 404 straight stitch on Ebay for $70. What a machine that is. Andy Tube had just put one in the shower so that's what I did with this one. I even named her Wendy as Andy Tube had named some of his. Went through the motor and changed the brushes. If you ever work on one of those P8 motors get the brush seating sticks like Andy has on one of his videos. That thing is magic. Anyway I guess I'm done writing my book here. Thanks Andy, I hope you can take us along with your "new" Singer. I've enjoyed all the videos I've ever seen on Andy Tube. Thanks.

@@ralphwatten2426 haha the green lawns are real. I first saw them in the late 1960s in del Webb's new Sun City, where all kinds of people from the east coast and Midwest were moving here. Many of the front yards just had small rocks larger than pea gravel and we're painted green and when people found out that the local Bermuda grass turn brown in the winter they hated it. So every winter they would put a coat of green dye on the grass that hasn't been done in a long time. And it is a very dry heat here often as slow as under 10% humidity. But the best comment I heard was a guy name d. John from Kalamazoo, Michigan. When I mentioned to him it's a dry heat. He says yeah well so is an oven but I don't stick my head in it

Thank you, Gary. I've been studying that top gear a little and it looks a lot more complicated than the 457 top ear I did. It may have to come out the top of the arm, YIKES! 🤔

    • @cynthiaporter8300
      @cynthiaporter8300 Рік тому

I was able to replace the top gear in a 477. You have to remove the stitch length dial and pull off the light switch, then the little clips to remove the face plate. I even pulled out the light fixture to make some space. With some effort I removed the set screws from the gear and with chopsticks I inched out the gear, dropped it down by the motor and tried to remove the motor to retrieve it. I finally retrieved it, but could not get the motor all the way out. Replaced the motor then went back up to the top. I’m trying to remember now, I think I had to go in through the stitch regulator space after removing that in order to get the new gear in. I got it in and had to remove it AGAIN! As it was a bit too tall. I sanded the bottom of the gear off slightly and re-installed it. This time it fit better and was not binding. Whew! i watched your video and received documents from you (thank you) in order to find out how to replace the gear. However, this machine and the one I worked on have a lot more bits of machinery near the gear. You can do it! You won’t have to totally disassemble the top end. Good luck, nice to hear your voice. I’ve been married nearly 51 years and my husband helps and encourages me in my sewing machine hobby!

BTW, I had a thought that the feed dog on your 507 may be crooked. Just a thought. Sometimes after removing and replacing a dog it's a little crooked from tightening one screw 100% then installing the second. One of the Singer guys told me to tighten the screws back and forth a little at a time to make sure the screw head seats into the hole and the dog sits flush on the lifting bar. Unfortunately, it also came with a lot of waxy grease. I sent it to be professionally cleaned, thinking I could maintain it with your helpful videos after a trip to the spa. It came back with lots of black grease. I could have done better myself (after watching your videos I know how it should look after being cleaned properly, you've spoiled me!). Here is a playlist of 7 handwheel videos: ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLkg187yG6E4sV8ZdMzrHob.html Most Singer handwheels work the same on the vintage models. Maybe the one on model 403A would help the most, but most show how to remove and replace the type of handwheel you have. The stop-motion screw on your 500A is a bigger style but still works the same. Good luck, and let me know if you still need help with it.

Thank you for your quick response. I finally got the stop wheel unstuck by getting behind the machine so I could push instead of pull on the wheel to loosen. The washer on the 500a is smooth on both sides & does not have the indentations like the 403 in your suggested video. It does have the 3 protrusions. I moved the washer to various positions but did not fix the problem of the needle bar/needle/wheel moving down after manually turning the wheel & releasing it. Oh well, the machine sews beautifully so I guess I should leave it alone. Thanks again!

@@shellyjacob6037 Sorry that did not help. I asked another person who does repairs and she felt it would be the stop motion washer also. We believe the tension of the handwheel gear to the pinion gear on the motor shaft would be enough to hold the Needle Bar in any position when the motor stopped or you turn the handwheel and stopped. I guess we are as puzzled as you then. BTW, you are only turning the wheel TOWARD you and not away from you, right?

@@shellyjacob6037 I looked at the parts diagram for model 500A (there is no model 501A that I know of) and the washer is flat with three "ears" or "tabs" that stick out from the outside edge. They act the same as the 3 pins on the 403A washer. You can get a free copy of the parts diagram/manual by asking Alan for it at andymanuals53@gmail.com. You can also get a free copy of the original service manual for the 5oo/503 models from the sewing dude at this link: sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-500-service-manual.pdf The handwheel info is on page 18.

I always liked the looks of this machine, but it's one I don't have. Congrats on figuring out wife speak! So few men ever really achieve that knowledge, lol! Do you have any videos or advice for me on a Singer 600E that cycles fast and slow when the foot pedal is depressed? The motor commutator is clean and the foot pedal works perfectly on my other 600E. Even went so far as to try another motor and still get the same thing.

Thanks for watching. I never worked much on the Touch & Sew Models.
If you feel that the speed cycling is NOT electric from your testing then maybe it is a mechanical binding. I have had machines do this and found the cam stack wheel gear set too close to the worm gear of the arm shaft.
I have heard from a couple of viewers with your model that thread can get trapped under and around the shaft inside the hook that raises the bobbin case up and down for winding the bobbin. First thread pieces, then those attract lint and they get bunched together and create problems. Their advice was to keep the bobbin case/hook area super clean.
Any of the moving parts can cause binding and be hard to isolate; take up lever mounting screw set too tight, bent needle bar. and one of the gear pairs can be meshed together too tight.
It sounds like you used good methods to start troubleshooting through the electrical, *****} but what if it's the electrical connections on your machine? You took the pedal from the "bad" machine and used it on the "good" one, but did you take the pedal/cords from the "good" machine and try it on your "bad" machine? {*****
Of course, you should always be sure the machine is clean and fully lubricated as shown in the Instruction Manual. Lack of proper oil/grease can cause problems no doubt.
Model 600 is the 3rd generation of the 401A, and some parts are similar to it. I have some videos for Models 401A: ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLiDl9yFTP6mJgQmz5lj4NO.html One of them is about removing, and cleaning the cam stack. ua-cam.com/video/aphiW06yp64/v-deo.html Not that you should do that, but I think it shows the gearing underneath so you could see the pinion gear, etc.
IMO, the Guru of T&S machine is Terry at store.tandtrepair.com/ He was a lead tech when the 600 came to market and then has his own sewing shop. He sells Service and Repair manuals and even repair guides he wrote himself.
store.tandtrepair.com/tosew600se.html Some of those manuals may be of help to you.
I thought the 600 models had steel gears like the 301/401/500 models did. If the gears on your machine happen to be plastic they could be starting to lose the "teeth" on the gears and that can cause the problem you have until enough teeth break off that the hook and feed don't even move. Wish I had an answer for you but my lack of working on T&S models prevents that. Good luck.

aha another Singer discarded because of the dread broken top gear. This looks so much like my 478 Stylist 'Special ZigZag' model, the only change is the 'pattern selector'. When I replaced the top gear in my 478, space was more than a bit tight - pulled the front panel off, but even with needle nose pliers there was limited room to remove the broken top gear. A tiny offset screwdriver is like gold. But I just wanted to add, if you have an old clam shell pedal, its best to not leave the machine plugged in when you are not there. Otherwise you might see a machine start sewing all by itself, and smoke fill the room. Taught me a valuable lesson - leave unplugged, when not working on it or using it.
Good luck and I'm confident you will have this machine purring and performing beautifully in no time flat. I am ordering new belts for my old Singers because I worry about getting parts 10 years from now. The new ones don't have the fibers, so maybe I I will order a few.
Thanks for your wonderful videos Andy, I really enjoy all your hard work. So do a lot of other do-it-yourselfers out there.

Thanks for sharing this info, Cheryl. I've been getting some good tips and I appreciate yours. Btw, your clamshell controller needs a tuneup and reset and that will fix the self-start problem most likely. Here is a playlist of videos to clean it up and adjust it:
      ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKItPLWcK24FBoMdHK8vTXNi.html
When it's out of adjustment the contacts are making slight connections and the carbon stack is overheating.
The only other reason would be an old capacitor inside is failing. They were put in decades ago to prevent TV interference but I think your is too new for that. Thanks again, and good luck

@@andytubesewing1953 oh yes, i have retrieved ALL your videos, and have even catalogued the urls. oh yes!
I think the most likely destination for that particular clamshell pedal that went on fire is the garbage can..
I am going to order a new pedal, I can't remember if you said it was the capacitor or the resistor,
but whatever it was, there was a lot of smoke and burning plastic smell, and whhhhhrrrrrr the machine started sewing all by itself, faster and faster... i thought the old Stylist was haunted. Just mesmorizing, watching this machine from across the room. sewing all by itself.
When the smoke started spewing out of the pedal, I snapped out of it, and went across the room and pulled the plug. I still have the pedal, but I just saved it to make sure I get the same configuration of the plug, when I order a new pedal. BTW, Like everyone else here, I am so happy to see you back at work. Where would we be without you ? Just a bunch of unhappy people with broken sewing machines, instead of a bunch of happy people with fixed sewing machines!

Great video. You give us the confidence to fix and clean our machines. Thanks! I notice you don't actually make products on the machine. Does your wife sew? I think it would be good to show one of you making a couple of easy projects and see if you can make a couple of dollars, like 30 or something social media and such to prove to some people they don't need some expensive, new, machine with all the bells and whistles to make project that can make some money or just use it for an enjoyable hobby.

I can't sow a straight seam but my wife sews like crazy and has been doing that since she was 9 years old. Your idea is intriguing and I'll see if she's interested. I talked to her about it a few years ago. If she demo my machines when I was finished back then she said if she was going to sew it was going to be for herself, not people she didn't know haha. Maybe I can convince her though. Thanks for the kind comment and for watching my channel

I told my wife she got a very good price and I will say that this time the machine was packed very well wrapped double with tight bubble wrap. The box was used and you can see in the picture it didn't hold up well but the machine arrived safely. I bought a couple in the past where the case was in pieces and one where the hand wheel was completely broken off so I haven't bought one from them in a long time. I'm sorry you had that experience and I appreciate you watching my channel

I’ve got a good one for your wife Andy. I bought a 201K a month ago on a Goodwill auction. It was (or looked), like it was in good shape. Won the auction at $165. They added $60 FOR SHIPPING and the other miscellaneous charges. When it got here, my box looked a little beaten but not too bad. Opened up the box and the bobbin winder had completely broken off during shipping. I know that because it was intact on the photos. I quickly emailed the Goodwill I bought it from but never heard back and I’m assuming I never will.
Well, so far super glue hasn’t worked so well… I don’t know what to do but maybe get one of those portable bobbin winders. The machine needs new electrical and I haven’t had the guts yet to tackle it. I used your videos (which are so helpful), to clean her up and she looks nice except for that darn bobbin winder. I looked at your tools list too. Boy, that’s a big list and I don’t know how much more $$ I want to put in her. I’ve already purchased a new vintage box of accessories and a vintage manual. The case it came in was smelly and so beat that I striped it down and put beautiful fabric on it. Polished the black on the case with shoe polish and it looks brand new. Now, I think the case might be worth more than the machine!
I just thought I’d tell you this story as I think I’ve learned my lesson from buying a machine from Goodwill. I can’t wait to see how you fix this one up! I wish I knew a place to take her in Minneapolis to get her electrical fixed and get her running. The place that used to work on vintage machines is closing up (bummer)! Thanks for all you do Andy!

Too sad about that BW. I'd email back again or even call the store that sold it to you. They do have a help center listed on the bottom of the main page, and you may even be able to return it unless the seller said no returns (the window of time probably passed).
Have you thought about using a JBWeld product? I have used a couple of them to repair metal damage on some slant needle machines. One that I liked was the Steelstik where you mashed the clay-like product together to activate it, then mold it to the part or make a replacement part. It dried a dark gray and can be sanded, drilled, painted, etc. www.jbweld.com/collections/metal
I also saw a couple of complete BW for sale on eBay in the $16 to $26 dollar range. I've never worked on a 201-2 or 201k, but I did bookmark a blog where they show rewiring a 201K with pictures and descriptions: www.igorkromin.net/index.php/2016/04/12/rewiring-a-singer-201k-sewing-machine/ Again, I have not done this myself, but maybe it will give you some ideas. EDIT: BTW, the tools are suggestions. When I started doing this I had regular screwdrivers, a rubber mallet, and a couple of wrenches. Over the years I've accumulated many more tools that make it easier.

Thank you so much for the advice. I ordered the JB Weld product and I think this is going to do the trick! I have been surfing eBay too to find the right part. The bobbin winder is molded into part of the motor case. I found one and took a night to think about it and the next day it had sold. One will show up again, I’m sure. For now, I’m anxious to see if the JB product will do the job with cast iron. Reading all the reviews, I think it will! Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction…
