Your ability to communicate so clearly and precisely is stunning! And, you frequently remind us to check for quality/correctness after each step. Amazing! 👏👏👏
Wow, thank you! I enjoy sharing what I know and it makes me so happy to know that others can restore a machine on their own now. Thanks for watching!
When watching your videos I never fail to learn something, and more often than not, a great deal from you. You are a gifted instructor. Clear, thorough and knowledgeable. Thank you for taking the time to share you expertise.
Sharing knowledge is what it’s all about! That was really encouraging to read, thank you!
@@SewingMachineRehab 👍
Thanks ,my 301 motor needed a armature cleaning, a salute to you Girl ! Used some 220 sandpaper, and a knife to remove the armature rud from 70 years ,I just love this machine ,I use it fir some light upholstery work ,thanks again Rob Broussard from south louisiana
So glad to be of help!
Very well done Jen!
I ended putting on a pair of gardening gloves because my thumb nail was breaking. They helped. Update. Using your videos the motor is back together and in the machine. It runs fast and smooth. Thanks for the tip to get the worm gear going.
Yes, especially when taking out the clip that holds in the bearing. It can be tough! That was a good idea!
At 12:55 when you have already put in the 1st long screw and the 2nd screw seems to need a push ... my 2nd screw did exactly the same thing yours did! My 1st screw went smooth as silk! Great vid!
Hello Jen. It was so nice to see another one of your videos. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge again. Blessings
Hi! This summer has slowed down my progress but thankfully it’s about to get quiet at my house again. I always enjoy seeing your comments and hope you are doing well.
I have chickened out trying to restore my 301 fearing that i would end up in a real pickle if i made a mistake. I have learned a lot watching this series however. Would you also consider a video on just the daily care and recommended needles, thread, etc? Plus, identifying common problems? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise on this machine!
M, I hope that if you really want to restore your 301 you will find the courage. But I understand it can be intimidating and would never recommend that anyone jump into the process if they didn’t think they were ready yet. I am glad that you asked about other videos, they are coming! This summer has been with construction projects around my house so sometimes there is just too much noise to film. As soon as this series is finished I am going to start putting together the kinds of videos you asked about. So stay tuned and thank you for always having something encouraging to say!
@@SewingMachineRehab fantastic news! Enjoy your summer and I will continue to watch for when you upload a video!
You talk about putting the grease wick back in but not how to grease a new one. So far so good on the instructions. I have made it this far without any extra parts😂
Hi! There are a couple ways to grease the new wicks. You can just roll them in some grease so they are coated and then put them back in the port or you can heat up the grease and wicks together so the grease starts to absorb into the wick. I use a little metal spoon and a heat gun to do this but you could even hold the spoon over a candle flame if you wanted. The only difference I have noticed between the two methods is that when you don’t heat the grease with the wicks you will need to add grease to the ports more often until they become saturated. Once they absorb enough grease then you will only have to top off the ports every once in a while. So, either way should work as long as you keep an eye on the grease ports. I guess I need to make a video that goes over this step a little more in-depth. :)
Thanks for the information. Can I assume the this can be used for all the wicks? Love Love the video series. So informative and easy to follow.
Thank you so much for asking this question! I had the same issue. AND...so far I also have had no extra parts, bonus right?
@@SewingMachineRehab THANK YOU! I had the same question and now have the answer. 😊
I am following your full series to restore a $40 black 301a I picked up! Thank you! It’s been amazing.
As I am inspecting my parts, I see that some of the black electrical is pulling up on coil of wires. Should I add more tape?
Also-thanks for the tip on the commutator. I used the honing stick as you suggested in the cleaning video. It might be good in that video to suggest the pencil eraser as you do in this video. Just a thought. Im worried now that I used that.
Thanks again!! This is such a fun project.
Hello! Wow, a black 301A for $40, that is my definition of a lucky day! If you are talking about the wires in the field core, if they are not exposed I wouldn't do anything to them. I don't think the covering used on those wires is standard electrical tape so I would be hesitant to recommend it, only because I have never had to try it. That doesn't mean it wouldn't work, just that I would want to test it out before recommending. :) I've had motors where the covering looked a little worse for wear but was still intact and the motor still worked beautifully. As far as polishing the commutator, a pencil eraser, the honing stick and even very fine grit sand paper (3,000) all will do the trick. Sometimes I start with the honing stick and finish with sand paper. If you are nervous about going over board with the latter two just stick with the pencil eraser and you will be fine, it won't be as polished but it will be better than before. Good luck with your restoration, happy you are following along!
Is that a steel worm/helical gear? Luckily mine came from a high school and it's almost new but I do like that if it is a metal worm gear
Yes, all of the gears in the 301 are steel except for the gear on the hand wheel. Even that gear is not your typical plastic gear though and I think that the reason it wasn’t made of steel had to do with the kind of movement it needed to have as well as to cut down on noise. That is just my opinion though. It is still made of a very tough material and I have personally never seen one cracked yet.
@@SewingMachineRehab yes I knew that from the first moment I took it apart and looked at it I thought why did they do that but like you say the only ones I've ever seen slighty chipped are the ones that had dry grease and returned without cleaning it before turning it
How do you clean the motor once it’s disassemble?
Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/CmfhReJQoUQ/v-deo.html starting at the 12 minute mark. :) Have fun!
My lever for foot isn't working what could be the problem
Hello, do you mean the foot control isn't working when you press it? I would need a little more info before I can try to help....
