Once upon a time, many moons ago. I was 8 years old. We were driving home with my aunt. My Mom stops the car and finds a TV on the side of the road. She decided to pick it up and take it home. She put it under my feet in the backseat. We drive off with the TV. About 15 minutes pass, I feel something crawl across my foot. Turns out our newfound TV had roaches inside! I screamed in terror, and we ditched the TV. I'm not very keen to pick up random junk off the street as a result.
That sucks
Lol
I found a Gameboy color inside of my home's old shed, it was filled with ants inside, but worked like normal once I cleaned it out. I can't see myself doing the same if it was roaches though.
Why did I read this before going to bed?
@@coolmacncheese that would be a awesome find! Someone will one day find 2 gameboy colors and all my games as well as old pokemon cards we dont really know where anything went but I'm assuming I had hidden the stuff and during renovations by my dad they have been sealed in my childhood home.
I understand repairing a CRT is no joke (seriously if you’re not a trained professional DON’T touch anything inside one) but all you had to do was splice a power cord together and WHANGO BANGO FREE TV. Too easy mate. Too easy!
Anyone with a basic understanding of crt tvs/monitors should be fine. The only really dangerous bits are the capacitors and the tube if it hasnt been shorted/discharged. Anyone who can access Google or Bing (and has two brain cells to bash together) should be able to repair almost any crt display without much issue.
.
@Michael O Callaghan there are big capacitors inside a crt monitor. If people accidentally touch the leads on the capacitors and if they still have charge, you can die from the shock it can give.
Retro future's introduction to dumpster diving
My thoughts exactly. These things can be found at goodwill for peanuts.
JopieHaargel or in the ads for free, people are actually happy when you take them, because then they don't have to bother with recycling them. There are a few good brands or TV station monitors (which are insanely heavy) that are actually still worth some money, but most are pretty much worthless, especially ones that size.

Hahahaha
Maybe you can fix your friend, with duct tape?

Weird story.......
*LOCAL JERSEY UA-camR BLOWN UP BY CRT*
Last words were: "The light has come on!"
I thought they were British

I have a Goodman's CRT that I've got hooked up to my PS2 and Mega drive. Would've been funny if the CRT was made by Bush. Found in Bush, made by Bush
with a copy of Bush's Sixteen Stone randomly on top
Ah, you beat me to it!
And it having a picture of Bush
Those tvs are downright awesome. They're an incredible piece of old technology. I am personally impressed that humans were able to even make something so complex. You just never see how these tvs actually work because of their casings.
People are getting influenced to think crts are ticking time bombs for some reason. They're not. They were the only thing that produced a picture for televisions and monitors for nearly a hundred years and have been improved on over that length of time. Incredibly durable and resistant to many things, even a drop from 4 feet doesn't break one. Its weak point is the front glass but even that is a tough as it can be. Only extreme blunt force will shatter it, for instance, an intentional blow with a hammer.
if disassmbled, the bigger risk is necking it
Sony XBR CRT TV's came with HDMI ports and look insanely god like keep your eyes peeled for one
Yeah, XBR960 with a SuperFinePitch 1080i HD tube. Those are good for PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360 and really good for movies.
Sadly here in Europe we never got Sony HD CRT TV's. I have a 32" widescreen Sony Trinitron KV-32FX68E which is a 100Hz 576i CRT TV. I mostly use it to watch Anime and to play some older consoles.
@@Pasi123 sorry I had no idea but yeah those TVs are insanely unappreciated they have no lag and yep PS2 PS1 games of that are in 360 PS3 look incredible
@@Pasi123 , I pretty much sure that possible to find Samsung WS 32Z40HTQ CRT with HDMI instead of SONY CRT with HDMI model . Its perfect for 480p 576 p 720p 1080i movies and for PS3 , XBOX 360 , WIii U gaming
I am looking for a 19" Sony Triniton CRT. Does anyone have any suggestions on a 19" Triniton CRT model that haslook better compared to a 19" Phillips Magnavox CRT. So far, Phillips Magnavox has the best color to me compared to some 27" or 32" Sony CRT.
Yeah but I'm not sure if they were ever sold in the UK...
I've had one for years and accidentally left it outside for a few weeks in a rainy Winter. I took it back inside and left it for what must have been about 2 months. I finally plucked up the courage to test it out, so I took it into my garden with an extension lead. To my delight, it worked perfectly amd still does to this day.
I found one in the SNOW
What a laugh this was - you’re very brave and slightly crazy my friend. Enjoy your new (old) TV :)
Thanks Jon!
i see you are not camera shy any longer
Aaah so Jon is Retro DX! What a twist
He was hardly brave
Best way to get rekt by the crt's cap. Me and my friends back when we were kids used to discharge them all the time with screwdrivers. Oh man, I miss playing in the dump.

People cut the power cords for the copper in it for scrapping
the person who throw the tv cut the power cord.because they don't want others to pick it up & use it?
kntwing my brother does that yes because he's taken parts out for spares or because he already knows its dangerous, he also likes to take all the screws out for comedy effect so it falls apart when someone tries to picks it up.
The deflection yoke on the neck of the tube is basically two big coils of copper wire so they whould be throwing away the more valuable bit.
Sun Wukong So, your brother dumps his old electronics on the side of the road instead of having them recycled like he should do?
@@tails64dsntchannel8 that's probably not worth the effort to get plus opening crts are dangerous.
**finds tv**
**lets it dry**
**pretty much ties a powercord to the cut cord**
**works perfectly**
Noice.
Damn the content on this channel keeps getting better and better..Keep it up Elliot.
I once found a sega Genesis on the side of the road and it worked perfectly
I have sudden need to play A Link to the Past now
Woah. I remember seeing this video when it came out. I didn’t think I’d be watching this same guy today!
i find one here in chile (south america) near my house, feel so lucky because the tv work like a charm, now i can play again on my wii like old times...
Are CRTs hard to find where you live? Here in the states you can't pay people to take them from you. They're everywhere, and I have 4 that are just stuck with me
I know my family has so many crts between houses and storage units we could build a new house out of em.
Donate them to your local Melee community 😂
You just don't find em here
television and cheese Wow. I could go on ebay Kleinanzeigen (which is sort of our craigslist here) and get almost any brand and any size I want for free within a 30 kilometer radius.
Dang, in America we can't even give those things away, 100% working ones too!! 😂😂😂
I like crts more than modern tvs
They have their perks. For one, they work better with older games and are always lag-free.
Me too
Don't we all?
I really like them too, the issue that i have its that i can hear like a screech sound when they are on, its the only downside for me
@@bf2142FallensoulGood point, but I've heard (no pun intended) that the noise becomes less audible as you get older.
Shame it's a Daewoo and not a Bush. A bush in a bush is worth two in the bush.
Thank you for fixing my old TV
Scrappers cut the cords even if they are working they don't care. The time it takes to open them for the copper inside isn't worth the effort to most because then they have to get rid of the rest of the unit.
I have an old Curtis mathes tv from the 1980s and it was rained on for two days and still works fine.
I wish I could find free TVs that had SCART inputs here in the states. Enjoying analog RGB goodness is a lot harder (and expensive) over here... :(
Yeah, how come only Europe got it?
Bro, i found one very similar but wasn't found in a bush but was a BUSH branded one with scart, it had the cord cut off it though aswell and it got wet but i was determined, i took it apart, stuffed toilet paper in there, waited a day and twisted another power cable on and it powered right up, this was about a month ago and now my favourite retro youtuber has the exact same experience, wow! The best things in life really are free
This is the good content I came here to watch.
I'd love to see more videos in this style!
this is reality (CRT)TV man, we need more of this!
Those old CRT’s were tuff! Several people brought TV’s in for service but the TV 📺 slid off the truck bed. Tube never broke - left gouges in the screen. Now the guns in the back - well they can be deadly! Boxing up a CRT for warranty return.. couldn’t pick the box up. Over night the guns imbedded into the wood floor!! Never play with old fashioned TV’s. Also you can get hit with 30,000 volts or more!
How's things going with this, it still working?
Apparently, there's dials inside the casing to adjust the brightness.
o yea there aren't as many crts in some countries
Way more entertaining than what I thought it'd be. Well done for not dying
Nice find! Do you have a more permanent solution for that power cable? XD
Wow, you find technology in bushes.
I find skunks.
Wow that brings back memories, I had a daewoo TV, mine looked the same had it for Christmas in about 1996 or 7 was ok but was only mono but used the alarm clock on it a lot
That's awesome, so glad it works. I've found myself 1 x Sony CRT 14' with built-in VHS & another without. Got them at a carboot for £5 each, they both work perfect. But I would advise not to leave it on stand-by when its unattended, so switch off at the mains or use a remote plug when your not using it. honestly all the retro looks 10x better compared to using them on any modern TV
I like how they have scart yet they used composite 😫
A lot of TVs here don't have composite inputs, but they do have scart. Scart-to-AV adapters are highly common around here. My Xbox 360 even came with one back in 2012.
He definitely should buy a RGB Scart cable
Rain is not great but patience and evaporation indoors usually takes care of that, or a hairdryer heh. It's a good size, despite limited space I've stored several on an average shelf. Found my latest in my building car park, was a little cold but otherwise fine.
"fixing" a perfectly working old tv
I have a Daewoo 20" CRT that I use as my main retro gaming monitor and in my opinion it's picture is one of the best I have ever seen. I have owned professional broadcast monitors and many CRT's including sony trinitrons and I personally prefer the picture from my Daewoo. I got mine off of eBay about a year ago boxed from an older guy and the set was as good as new so probably a very late set that had next to no hours on the tube. Do yourself a massive favour and get yourself decent cables and make sure your consoles output rgb and just look at the results. I love the zero lag and warm picture of a crt beats any hd tv.
it’s very nice to show love to vintage products because they will be worth one day a lot of money keep up the good work mate
I'm glad that CRT you've found has worked. (Worked during the time of this video)
Incredible, im actually really impressed. Very risky though, but I guess it payed off? This was probably your best video, I'm not going to lie.
I found a Samsung SyncMaster 753dfx CRT monitor in a real bush :D After little cleanup i've got it working!
@jons face revealed, i have been waiting for this moment for ages hahahah
Finding CRTs isn't that uncommon here. I've even seen some in bushes when I was on holiday in Italy. :D I think it's because they're a pain to store and to get rid of so people drop them somewhere
Getting rid of ewaste is free in Italy, also an home pickup service is offered in my area
Britain has a lot too
I found a crt tv in the dumpster and it worked no problem
Make a follow up video on restoring it and a new paint on it
it's no problem if they get rained on, I have a sony kv-e2931d that I transported by foot by rain and it only needed a day to dry. I recommend a week tho.
The suspense when plugging it in was real!!
Many people throw away CRT TVs and I like it when they are fixed and brought back to life.
i still have this old silver crt tv from 98, good for ps2 and snes playing
i have a house full of CRT's, all kinds of them (Monochrome, CGA, RGBI, Trinitrons) they are pretty durable, but for adjustments and repairs working on them is relatively safe if you know what you are doing.
just to let you know what you are dealing with is high voltage (roughly 20 to 30Kv) at a high frequency, the Picture Tube acts like a capacitor and stores current, you should always discharge said tube by shorting the output of the Flyback transformer (suction cap with the wire) with the Dag ground of the tube. other harmful components are the mains filtering caps, other than that the rest is gonna be fine to work around.
Play Safe!
That's awesome, man. Are CRTs hard to come by where you live? In my area in America, people put them on their curbs on a monthly basis 😂
I think you should really clean this one up, and maybe even do a cool paint job on it! Glad it works for ya!
Imagine seeing a man walking down the trees carying a old CRT box tv. Lol I will be so confused
Can you please help me adjust my Sony trinatron or show us what screws I can fine-tune to straighten out the lines I'll link a video on what I mean it's just that it's in another language hope you can help I'm a huge fan
Can't find the UA-cam video but it seems that I found alot more CRT fix videos on screen tick and magnetic strips I can use is the Sony service mode trick dosent help me I will give it a try
Perhaps i can help, i have quite a bit of experience working on CRT's, are you talking about the convergence of the picture?
@@tails64dsntchannel8 I have a bit of screen tick or jump when using component cables also I get some rounding of the linear lines on the edges of the screen it's a flat panel CRT Sony Trinitron
Luis Rodriguez The "rounding" you described sounds like it could be a focus issue, there's a trimmer on the flyback transformer, you can turn that by using a plastic flat tip tool, beeing careful not to touch anything.
as for the ticking (assuming the whole picture shrinking accompanied by a Tick sound) in my experience are aging caps, some times it can be smoothed out by leaving it running for a while, otherwise you should change out the caps in the monitor, but since it only happens with component it might just be a bad connection on the RCA Jacks.
or by Rounding you mean straight lines become curved?
that's a convergence issue and if you can't fix it in the operator menu i don't think you'll find adjusting pots on the inside..
Nice find
I've been watching your videos for a couple weeks now and only just noticed I wasn't subscribed?! Great channel man, really enjoy watching your videos 😁
Use your GBC as a remote! There's some old homebrew floating around that uses the GBC IR sensor to work as a universal remote.
any updates on the CRT Television Elliot? do you still have it?
Nice. I also found a small CRT like you did outside which I am using every day.
Sweet! What’s your best find ever?
I once happened across a 360 arcade edition along with psu and Pad left out for the binmen on a backstreet in the rain!
Home, radiator for 3 days, power on, win!
I feel like such a nerd watching these, but they keep appearing in my suggested and are so interesting
What a trip, hahahaha. Great video, but feel free to take risk-free ventures for any of your upcoming videos, lmao
You wanna pick up a Sony PVM off of eBay, if you get hold of one that's in good condition they're great! Mine's got RGB/S-Video in :)
sooo glad this wasnt your last video XD
I am looking for a 19" Sony Triniton CRT. Does anyone have any suggestions on a 19" Triniton CRT model that haslook better compared to a 19" Phillips Magnavox CRT. So far, Phillips Magnavox has the best color to me compared to some 27" or 32" Sony CRT.
Over here in the states you see em on the side of the road all the time not as much know but still a common sight
Excellent rescue. This is the kind of thing I do.
I like picking up old HiFi stereos out of the trash.
If you have an IR blaster on your cell phone, you can download apps (SURE) that will operate the tv.
Marvellous. That was like, the Retro Future does a heist movie.
Great video would love to see more like this
Oof those CRT... I would be very tempted to do a major overhaul to implement some kind of higher quality inputs if possible, for example a component input or even a VGA-style RGB. There is no analog TV broadcast available anyway, I don't think such a mod would hurt.
Great to see something being re-purposed instead of going to the landfill.
I still have one of those old TVs because the feel is different when you play old games there.
No Brasil essas TVs ainda são bem comuns, tenho uma da sempre Toshiba no meu sega mega drive
If it's come from one of the stores the lead has probably been cut to avoid paying TV licence. Found two at my work that have been sat there for years with leads cut for that reason.
I get sad when any old machinery is abandoned
Anyone know the song when they where driving to go pick up the crt+
nice lil find now can i go to sleep lmao
Hi retro future i was wondering if you could fix my ps1 it boot loops but reply if you see it
It’s very much a common thing to cut working items power cables so they cannot be resold or reused because the person who originally had it wants to ensure it cannot be used, and make it effectively unusable so it becomes trash. It also also the quickest way for some scrappers to get copper, if they don’t want to break open the TV.
"What level of Capitalism are you on, my dude?"
"I render perfectly good things unusable before I throw them out so other people can't use it because it's MY TRASH"
Twist yes, if you’re from where I’m from it’s a very real thing, just because it’s useable doesn’t mean it’s wanted. CRTV cords are often cut for the copper inside or so the people who come to throw it away know it’s trash. People cut the cord as a sign of yah this is trash take it away boys.
Twist I doubt you want someone digging through your trash, yah ? So no matter what the contents of your garbage is I don’t think you want people going through it. So here’s a metaphor I bet you don’t want raccoons in your trash, even though those raccoons could really use that trash, so you put a lid on it, rendering it unusable, so then you’re a capitalist because you didn’t want someone else IN YOUR TRASH”
Raccoon's ain't people, homeboy. If someone can make use of what I don't need or want and it isn't hurting me, they should go right ahead, just don't leave a mess.
Seriously, how much coppers worth in a TV mains cable?
I just found one on the side of the road too. Wish me luck!
Ha, I found myself in the same kind of situation but instead of a crt television it was an all in one computer in a BJs parking lot
I hope to god you took it home and looked inside to see if anything was wrong with it.
Had the same situation byt with a freckin' projection 50 inch tv found on a pavement on 3:00AM xDD
thank you
Last year I found a crt in Snow worked fine
If the TV had been rained on it would be no problem, as long you make absolutely sure there is no moisture the moment you give it power. If it has moisture just open it up and leave it on the sun for a couple of days until it's absolutely dry, then it's ok to tun it on.
Both tvs ive owned were found on the side of the road, the first was wet from some rain but worked perfectly and even had the remote. Idk why your so afraid of the tv though, dont touch stuff, thats really it. Now if i could figure out how to fix the vcrs in combo televisions, those things are stuck in there and you have to pull the entire tv apart to get them out just to hand clean the heads...
I had a crt tv lying around in my house because what would i do with it also it was really small (don't play 4 player goldin eye on it trust me) and so my roommate one day just chucked it in the dumpster cuz he was mad it was sitting in the corner the entire time.
I'm guessing it's the size of the TV in this video
this is epic dude :D
Awesome!
I have 3 CRTs and I say TVs outside with a wire cut is a good find and look in thrift stores
HaHa, I still have that exact same model of TV, T142 I think it is, still works as good as new. I use it with a Raspberry Pi to display teletext. You'll be a bit stuck without a remote though as almost everything is on the remote for that model.
A friends tv went out and while I was looking at it. It shocked the crap out of me. I told his parents that the tv was not safe and we got rid of it.
You should get a RGB Scart cable. It has a lot better picture quality than Composite
the luckiest thing ive found is a fishing hook on the floor while you guys found a crt!
