    He was really crying, that is the exact moment the Count throws away his heart over to madness. Even after he landed, he rarely looked the Kid in the eyes.

  • @BrethrenThouEnraged
    @BrethrenThouEnraged 11 років тому +61

    Misery and madness is what he lived at Chateau d'If. Now, as Dumas portrayed him, he is wise and powerful. As Wittgenstein wrote, laughter and wisdom are closely related, so close you can confuse one with the other. Often wisemen appear as mad, Nietzsche was proof of that.
    He is far superior physically and mentally than others, it is not madness and he is laughing probably at something absurd of humanity that the previous moment has brought to his attention, as he often criticizes it.

      true and can anyone really blame him for this? I know I can't. Just imagine you're being sent to the prison with probability of being killed, while you didn't do absolutely nothing to deserve this. Everyone would want to take revenge, since, frankly, it hurts even more when your supposedly "best friend" puts you through this everything. I wish that anime would show one more thing that drove him to do this, not only being locked in the prison but also his father's death from starvation. This is something, what noone could or should forgive. I think that when the boy asks him "why" he kinda is reminded of himself asking all these years one and the same question: "I didn't do anything wrong so why??"

    This scene, this song...
    My god was one of the saddest and most impactful scenes in all of the anime (apart from the death of Franz and Edmond)
    This shows what hate can do to a man...
    Transforming him into a being without remorse, sadness or happiness... only hate fills his wounded heart for those he once trusted...

    • @zarosderer4447
      @zarosderer4447 Рік тому

      Hate is power and in the darkness we see clearly the turth, because in the light we are blinded.
      I embraced all of it by beeing laughed at, insulted and looked down at by women.
      Now I am 35 and I live for my revenge.
      I will be rich and give myself justice and look down on them and destroy humanity for the good of the whole universe.
      The dark side freed me and gave me peace of mind and I know feel and see in clarity the whole truth.
      Hate fills up my life power and motivation because I deserve justice and fairness and peace.
      Therefore I trust in fate.
      Everytime I give in to darkness good things happen to me. But then I turn a little bit light and all the good which came by fate and luck goes away.
      This is my 3rd attempt: I will now truly live up to the dark side, take the chance fate gives me, trust in the power of hate and dark side and be rich to fullfil my destiny.
      You never can trick destiny. It always makes impossible things possible so you be there where you belong.

    Evil? After being tortured in a prison for 20 years for something he did not deserve and everything snatched away from him. Its justified and appropriate! His enemies only suffered for a few months. I like the anime perhaps a little more than the book because he did not show weakness when he was exacting his revenge. Conclusion, whatever twisted sense of pleasure he derives from the suffering of his enemies may be considered evil but "being evil is an effect" not something he started out as.

      For me as well. I mean it's easy to criticise, but seriously...who wouldn't want to have revenge after all this that he went through? I know I would....with any means necessery. The count was originaly a good guy, kid's father and his friends pulled him into being a "bad". So to say they have created him, they took like everything from him and some of us hold against him the fact that he wanted revenge. Seriously?!

    • @valentinewiggin9152
      @valentinewiggin9152 5 років тому +11

      I think he is a really ambivalent character. As a big fan of the book, I think of himself as someone who can't really be blamed, but certainly isn't a good guy. He is basically insane, he suffered so much, that he simply couldn't take it with a healthy mind, and broke down. But he is awfully intelligent, and he had a lot of money and power, and these three are not a good mix, when they are put in the hands of broken and vengeful man. He sees himself as a force of justice, like he was meant to have this revenge, and therefore as someone who can destroy anyone in the way without taking any responsibility - this makes his suffering mean something, and easier to cope with. So I don't think he is a villain or a bad guy. He is just broken, mentally, emotionally, and in many aspects, physically.
      If I remember well, in the anime there is a scene, where he is alone and he falls apart for a moment, and starts to cry, but the crying turns into a maniacal laugh in seconds. That one scene describes the whole character without any words.

    I always believed that the Count did care for Albert on some level. The two were similar, at least when the Count was his age. They were both naive, but good at heart. Albert reminds him of who he once was, which is why we do see moments where he does care for the boy. He's just making sure it doesn't get in the way of his vengeance.

    • @katerinaaqu
      @katerinaaqu 5 років тому +17

      In the original book of Dumas Dandes never reveals his true plan so bluntly. Albert pretty much realizes everything himself. He challenges him to a Duel which Dandes accepts because he considers it part of his vengeance not because he hates Albert but because he swore to bring misery upon Fernando and his family.
      However the day before the Duel Mercedes goes to the count and begs him to spare her son's life. Monte Cristo eventually bends and agrees but feels ready to lose the Duel on purpose and die. The last moment Albert apologized and the Duel never occurred.
      In the end of the book the count shows his admiration for Albert's courage and his noble spirit and shows his love for him.

      @@mohda2575 Frantz in the story was the first one to see the Count in the island of Monte Cristo. Monte Cristo invited him to his lair in the cave and offered him an exotic supper and a dissert that contained hashish. Franz fell asleep and when he woke up he was really impressed with what happened to him.
      When they meet with the Count at Rome he is the first one to recognize him (because in his lair the count looked like some Arabic pasha instead) and he introduced him to Albert. However after seeing his cruel behavior he changed his mind however he still begged the count for a loan and help for Albert. After the adventure at Rome we do not see him much but he returns because he is Valentine's betrothed. The wedding arranfement seemed to be moving smoothly till Valentine spoke to her father about her love for Maximilian (her relationship with Maximilian and Albert is totally different from here by the way). Then her grandfather called Albert to his room and showed him a letter that proved that Frantz's father was not murdered but killed fair and square in a Duel and also the one who fueled him was Valentine's grandfather himself! Upon hearing that Frantz leaves the room and ends the marriage proposal. He was far more emotional in the book as were was the Count and Villefort.
      By the way the Duel was to be done between the Count and Albert. Not Frantz.

      You cant blame someone to be evil when he was treated by human scum evils for centurys.
      I was rejected by all women and stayed kind hearted until I was broken and with 35 reawkened. I gained full trust, peace of mind and justice and TRUTH only from the dark side.
      Hate fills up my life energy and gives me motivation for my final goal: to become rich so I can take revenge and justice from all humanity and women world.
      Because if you have money, you have power and all feel bad when they look at you. Only having milions or bilions of money will be revenge enough since they will go mad and crazy and run after you and you tell everyone to go to hell how ugly they are because they called me ugly all my life even i look decent fresh average but good average.
      Medidation is good, but your hatred will only be sharpened by the truth you discover how the world really is and how humans are.
      Therefore medidation wont burie or burn hatred, it will only sharpen it and give direction: create your path.
      So turn hatred into power and get justice and revenge which comes with peace for yourself.
      No one can stand in you way otherwise your path of real truth will be corrupted.
      Destiny cant be tricked. You get what you deserve in the end.
      Universe always balances out.
      You suffered? You have to embrace it to climb vitcory but only those who trust in themselfes and the dark side fully can achieve this justice.

    The anime was great, but I thought the ending was bad. The book gave a more satisfying ending. I know it was an adaptation on Dumas' work, but they really should have made it as it in a 1800-style, rather than a futuristic look. Would have made more sense plot-wise.

    What I think some of us are missing is that this story incorporates a lot of ideas that fit better for Japanese tropes than European ones. "Gankutsuou" is a sort of wild demon who's taken over Edmond. He's different from Edmond, and this story doesn't jive with the Euro-Christian ideas of forgiveness and redemption like the original. Gankutsuou is not a nice guy, and he's all about the revenge. Hence, the liberal reinterpretation and infusion of tragedy in an eastern take on this western story.

    I thought the ending was fantastic. Its just a personal view but for me for a character to become truly transcendental in any form of media they must die when their part is played to the end. For example when the Count died I felt so sad but also that it was a great way to end him and regain the last dregs of humanity in the process. I recently watched Code Geass and R2 and now every time I think of Lelouch I fill up with such a sorrowful feeling.

    *continued in next post* but this arrangement is (sadly) not there.
    It's still worth it for the trailer music and for the whole "my friend" track which has three epic pieces of music mashed in one... and the "hip-hop" arrangement of this theme is actually pretty good, too... but don't hope for this particular arrangement of this particular piece. It isn't there.

    @TheSpawnfan Actually, in the real story "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas, Mercedes went to Montego because she was pregnant with Albert, the Count's son. This anime was set to be more futuristic, but in the times of the actual story, women were stoned to death if they were pregnant and not married...She always believed Edmond would come back, and preserved his legacy as well. She actually suffered just as much as Edmond.
