It’s amazing how most of these stadiums weren’t really modernized until about 30 years ago. It’s amazing. Makes you wonder how the ppl of ancient times were able to create such incredible buildings with their hands when it takes us decades to do the same with the use of modern machinery…
you forget that it used to take decades upon decades of 100s of thousands of men to build grand structures back in the day... i mean the great wall of china literally took like over 2,000+ years to build
They had to be modernised after tragic circumstances. The popplewell report after the Bradford city fire in 1985 when 56 people were killed recommendations were made to stadium then the Taylor report after 96 Liverpool fans were killed in a crush in 1989 at Hillsborough which recommended all stadiums in the top two tiers of English football had to be all seater stadiums.
I never missed a home game there from '65 to '75 always in the Leazes end. The crowd crush in there during the fairs cup games was unreal. Probably would be illegal now to put that many people in such a space.
The Leazes end seemed to look different almost every season back in the 1980’s!! I remember in 1987/88 it had a weird scaffolding like structure then when I went in 1989/90 it was a standard terraced away end.
First game there in 63, still can smell those toilets in the Gallowgate end before graduating to the Leazes End which was like the wild west at times late 60's early 70s. The Taylor report after Hillsborough and Sir John Hall helped by KK entertainers gave us the present " Cathedral on the Hill" Ashley scandalously sold the land behind the Gallowgate stunting the expansion of the stadium.
Went to Springsteen St James Park 1985 , wonderful June evening started at 6.00 ended 10.30! Standing on the hallowed turf, the Boss struts on stage at the Leazes end demolished but the whole end covered in speaker stacks fifty feet high, goes 1 -2 -3- 4. and then Born in the USA at full pelt, my god the power of music, the hairs on the back of my neck went straight up. I probably won't be able to be there as I live in Australia now, but when they hand the premier league trophy to Trippier It'll be exactly the same, and yes - I'll be crying. By the way - Springsteen called the striking miners wives to his dressing room before the gig and handed over £15K ( 1985! ) - what a guy.
And for 14 years it was left unchanged apart from free advertising on the stands. But let's see the next chapter in 10 years time. Looking forward to it
hard to now. mike cashley sold the strawberry land and the east stand cant be expanded as the leazes terrace is a listed building. cant even change a windowframe without government permission.
I find better to stay in their history grass ( and more interesting to see the evolution ) than to all destroy and built somewhere in a no man's land... Players feel this.
Not one of English footballs more iconic stadiums unless you're from Newcastle. Certainly seen 80s-90s changes, but wondering if much more expansion can be done on this site
There’s a feasibility study ongoing to see if it can be expanded further with the results due out soon. It’s a bit tight with the Grade 1 listed building restrictions behind the east stand called Leazes Terrace. We will see
@@robertfrost3388 we will see what the feasibility study concludes and what can actually be done. Because of the Grade 1 listed buildings behind the stadium on the east side it’s rather tight (hence the really low stand on that side) so itll be interesting to find out. As a season ticket holder I don’t want us to leave st James park. I’ve saw some of the changes and the legacy the old place has. You don’t get that with the new grounds , they seem soulless for a long time
Sadly, Newcastle fc have always been, and always will be, a big mouth, and very ordinary, won less titles than practically everybody, and that includes SUNDERLAND, by a massive margin. i thank you.
spacebar1892 But it is also one of the most glamorous. Prince Albert, all of the famous names such as Hill, Lauda, Prost, Senna, the Grimaldi family. The harbour, the yachts. What is there not to like?
spacebar1892 Check out Michele Alboreto's overtaking manoeuvres in Monaco in 1985. I am a Prost fan but Michele's performance that day was mind blowing.

The evolution of that stadium is so amazing ❤
Lived there for 1 year,in 2008 ..Newcastle!!!🇬🇷
Wow Beautiful Video . Thank you
Amazing the changes this stadium has been through

That was probably when the west stand (now Milburn stand) was being demolished and replaced
That 2011 shot makes me shudder
One of the best stadium in England ❤️
I seem to remember there were plans to change the name some years ago? Thankfully it was left unchanged.
@@jameshogan6142 there’s a feasibility study ongoing to see if it can be expanded further. The outcome should be released soon
i love Newcastle! :)
Beautiful stadium

One of my favorite stadiums in the prem
That stand with the gable must have been nearly 100 years old when it finally got demolished!
Yeah but they'd re roofed it I believe.
El newcastle de Miguel Almiron
Miggy ❤
Amazing to see the stadium develop over the years. Make this vid again with local hero please 😊
My wife would love this video she supports Newcastle United
Pretty much up until the 1990s our ground was a right shed lol just like roker park and ayresome park.
And for 14 years it was left unchanged apart from free advertising on the stands. But let's see the next chapter in 10 years time. Looking forward to it

Rich in History and now actually one of the richest clubs in the world.
Çok güzel olmuş Türkiye den selamlar
FACT it was the last ground in the premier league to still have standing until 1999
Can you do one of these videos for a American college football stadium.

Sunderlands was bigger if I remember.

@AllanM2e0 it'd be interesting to see the full stadium finished and it's potential capacity

Looks so silly. Like they just ran out of money lol
spacebar1892 It's like the Monaco Grand Prix circuit. It needs redesigning but is unable to do so because of nearby building constraints.
