Helldivers 1 all time concurrent player count: 6,744 players
Helldivers 2: 411,000 on steam with likely another 100-200k on PlayStation
It's not lack of foresight, its a small studio of 100 people blindsided by overnight success and scrambling to fix the game.
As the CEO said, get a refund or wait to buy it when the game can accommodate more players. Otherwise, go play twister or something.

I have two further issues with the game
Only 2 enemy factions Robots/Xenomorphs. All fights look the same from what i have seen and seems boring "visually"
Secondly it has kernel level access via its anticheat which seems overkill for a game that is not even an esport title
I think because of these now the game has "mostly negative" on steam (along with the server capacity issue)

My favorite and the most ironic part about it is all those games profit margins are way higher thanks to their high sales and lower budget than the big studios continuous flops. Obviously we don't know what the sales after a year will look like for skull and bones and suicide squad but it looks very likely they will be a fraction of where they want it to be. Kind of seem like major disaster projects but time will unfold that.

Helldivers was a great base for this follow up, and the dev delivered something fresh with a setting we saw thousand of times, because it does it better than the others. Btw the game was built on an engine called Stinray, that was officially abandoned by its developers back in 2018. Sure, they've taken it upon themselves to modify it as necessary, but still, it's been abandoned for 6 years and yet they still managed to make a game that beats most modern games and engines in raw gameplay and visuals. I'm really glad I can play Helldivers 1 in a 3rd person setting with modern graphics.

Minecraft sold out and became a censorship loving AAA game. While it is still an amazing game, it is being destroyed by an oversaturated consumerist push by Microsoft, taking away from the time to focus on developing the main game to push out absolute dogshit slop like Minecraft Legends (a soulless, corporate game that nobody asked for). The massive difference here is that the publisher has a dedicated vision for the community and refuses to oversaturate the game with mainstream features like PvP (which usually cater to competitive leaning developers that are only in it for the money and nothing else).
And honestly? As a hardcore PvP fan, I completely respect the publisher's choice with this decision. Sometimes PvP does not bring anything, and sometimes it in fact, brings a net negative.
In my experience, PvP games, while they are often incredible, get the most toxic not because of harmless smack talk on the mic, that's a part of many games, no that's fine. The issue I have with PvP is that people will abuse the votekick system and blatantly break the rules to unrightfully ban people who aren't obeying the "meta" of the game. Essentially what the "meta" means is that certain multiplayer game community get so terminally online, that they form an underworld council, a hierarchy of neckbeard losers who think that they run the entire server and demand that everyone play the game exactly as THEY want and demand like crybabies that everyone use the ""proper"" weapons and armour and anyone who doesn't, any innocent player who doesn't obey the fat greasy meta cultists, will get falsely votebanned for doing absolutely nothing wrong and simply playing the game how it best suits them.
For present and future PvP developers, my message is this; We need to crack down on votekick abusers and we need better systems to deal with them. Because it has been a cancerous plague against gaming for far too long. Sometimes, meta-"people" interfere with the multiplayer environment so badly that games in the most severe cases, can even become completely unplayable. I think that multiplayer can still work for games focused on other areas, with the problem being that it requires work and maintenance to properly operate.
I think it's also important to note that in terms of multiplayer, there's certain types of gatekeeping that make PvP better or worse:
Meta elitists are not real gatekeepers; They're schizo control freaks who want ownership of everyone's actions and want to put every player in a headlock and weaponize fear to take away the freedoms from all players in games that are all about freedom, choice and exploration. They kill the fun and they manipulate everyone around them. Meta players, whether they are PvP or PvE, are false gatekeepers and do not serve the interests or the well being of multiplayer games. Anyone who values freedom and actual enjoyment of the games they purchased with their hard earned money should do their part to gatekeep against meta-cultists and actively advocate against them. In a matter of speaking; It's not just about a small developer becoming big, it's about staying true to your principles on that journey that make a massive difference between Minecraft and Helldivers 2.

Mentally replaying combats, strategies, my abilities and trying to figure out how I can become better. The music sweeps you off your feet, draws you into the dance of quick reloads, artillery, and frantic combat.
I don’t expect to like this so much, though the trailer promised it wouldn’t be nothing. My #2 and #3 games are Factorio and EU4 presently, and unfortunately it’s an EU4 night (and I must sleep). One thing to definitely look forward to is what is to come. Baldurs Gate 3 could have easily been an example of capturing lightning in a bottle but with Palworld and now Helldivers 2 having the success they have had along with the overwhelmingly positive response from players that they have had... they SHOULD start serving as a blueprint or formula on what "to do" for other smaller companies. I dont expect any change from the AAA devs any time soon, but if change is going to happen then it is going to happen at the ground level with smaller companies that are able to knock it out of the ballpark and if these 3 games serve as the springboard that starts all of that then eventually the AAA studios will have to change their tactics or honestly risk becoming the "small" company.

To think, Arrowhead thought they'd sell 20k copies on the game and ended up selling over a million... would be interesting to see the number of players who put extra $$ into the game since the game is great and the cost is so low. I think this game has boosted ArrowHead up to Developer level they were not ready for, but that they will set trends in the industry for a while to come

Games just have to be pure fun, with devs actually putting love into them, and nothing else. Who have thought...
People got starved with the corporations designing games to be addictive, money sucking (and even politically correct). Everything that benefits said corporations, but not the players (harms the players actually).
Because "effective managers" in suits decide what games are, not enthusiastic devs who love what they are doing and want to share it with others.

As someone who've only played Destiny 2 (and rather recently), what really turned me off D2 was the monetization and anti-social community around it... Either you ran the right gear and were the right level, or you'd be kicked or dodged by 90% of other players.
D2 really felt like an empty co-op shooter, because nobody seem to want to play together.
This is where Helldivers 2 seem refreshingly different, people celebrate getting partied up, because they missions are so fucking brutal at the highest difficulties, that everybody wants help ^^
I hope this sense of shared struggle keeps going, making things easier would be honestly be worse for the game's longevity - the struggle brings players together.
side note: the loading screens in Helldivers 2 also feel better integrated, but that's more a nice touch than a necessity.

And it takes even Longer to unlock all the stuff in the warbonds, which you can’t buy. So yeah, it feels super achievable to just do it yourself without spending money, while also being Able to spend money if you want extra cosmetics or to support the studio. This game gives you the tools and lets you have fun the way you want to it brings back that feeling of couch coop games. This is the second game ive played thats done it, made a great game with a battlepass that doesn't screw you over, Deep rock galactic has a free battle pass that lasts a good while, then once its over the items will mkve into the ingame shop (there is no premium currency, so everything is earned in game and theres two different ways to buy cosmetics) and also moved to the ingame collectable cosmetic caches, you open them in the mission, after you engage with the games mechanics, wanna open a cache? You find the batteries and put them back, lost miner pack? Well you're going mining and looking at your map, theres the machines event which gives cores, which are cosmetics OR unique upgrades to weapons
Just playing the game will get you items, and there are cosmetics you can but only if you want to and even then honestly the best cosmetics are found in game through hardwork.
