The biggest reason I love "Dune" story. Is the very simple act of one woman, throws the entire universe into a tailspin. Jessica giving Leto a son out of love. That single defiant act shatters the plans of the Bene Gesserit, the Imperium and Harkonnens. Arguably, the biggest players in the political arena. I feel like this movie is augmenting the story by these changes to the narrative. It's an
uneasy and terrible burden to bear to be a "savior" especially to those you love and love you back.

@@Pierrespere-vm5of I detect hostility. Jessica was a Bene Geserrit Sister. Recruited, trained and tasked to birth a daughter for the Sisterhood. She betrayed everything dear to her; up to that point. All for the love of a singular man. This man happened to be a Duke and subsequently, both product and contributor to this breeding project. Lady Jessica was neither pathetic or simple minded. She stepped into it with eyes wide open. All for him.

All you see is the word "concubine" and immediately assume a pathetic servile position. Both thematically to the story of Dune and historically that is not the case. Go read a book and learn some history before you cast judgment like an uncultured brute

It wasn’t Leto who subjugated her and made her into a concubine. It was the bene gessiret and the landstraaat’s politics. hard disagree, I f**king despised the first movie and am quite sure I'll feel similarly about the second. well, I despised it by way of applying high standards proportional to the budget and hype. as a finished product with no context, it's not terrible, just very mediocre. 5.5/10. in fact, I would score rings of power higher at a 6 or 6.5 because while it doesn't have a few standout characteristics of artistic achievement like dune does, ROP is a more functionally watchable product that delivers at least a low level of entertainment and engagement.
dune 21 has garbage writing and pacing that manages to a baffling degree to feel like nothing is happening when on paper there actually is major plot going on. there is not a single engaging character in a plot that simultaneously seems to be simple and also is quite incomprehensible to viewers who don't already know it because the movie to an extraordinarily high degree arrogantly skips central plot and character debelopment, but then I also really did not care enough to try to understand because it was all so vapid. acting performances from practically all actors are very noticeably inferior compared to how they normally act. it has barely passable uninteresting drama-noise-music (typical for zimmer without williams, zimmer can't write melodies). the movie succeeds at visuals and atmosphere - although there it is a flagrantly derivative mixture of star wars and lawrence of arabia, which are both better, despite star wars not being all that great either. yes, I know that star wars is derivative of the dune books, but this dune movie is derivative of star wars movies. it just tries to hide it by leaning into being extremely boring so hard that it becomes a sort of unique defining characteristic among blockbusters, because it's an unreasonable choice that nobody else makes. cloud atlas might have had a similar oh-god-just-let-it-end vibe, but I don't think it was so thoroughly empty.

I think the choice to have Walken portray Shadam and depict him as an old, impotent man is very deliberate. We know he's still the big cheese in title, but can clearly see he doesn't really fit the grandeur of his title.
So it helps communicate the same ideas as the books, but in a visual medium. We can't see his thoughts and won't be spending that long with him on screen. So a more faithful depiction would be watered down. A series would have the real estate to depict him as the paper tiger he ultimately is

Great point. The Villeneuve movies do this a lot - favoring thematic clarity over strict accuracy. Like in the first movie the Sardaukar are in their white uniforms the whole time even though diagetically, they're supposed to be disguised as Harkonenn troops. It takes advantage of the fact that film is a visual medium to subliminally communicate how different they are and also how alien they are to the environment of Arrakis.

Sort of like how the Soviets backed Baathists and the West backed oil monarchies. In the end the Arabs are fanatical and can cause death and destruction if enabled. I love Villeneuve's Dune, but that last section on "Ya Hya Chouhada" reminded me that one of the things I disliked about it is how much the Islamic/Arab/Persian culture and history which inspired Dune is watered down or removed wholesale. Finding and learning more about all these varied and deeply thoughtful connections to the Islamic world was one of the most enjoyable parts of reading the book. Removing "Ya Hya Chouhada," with its connection to the Algerian War of Independence feels wrong to me. But I suppose as long as the film keeps faithful to the central themes of the book, the watered down vocabulary won't take away too much from my enjoyment. Really excited for Part 2 regardless.

      @ximono 9 місяців тому +13

I think it's the right choice to make a conlang. While it helped build a realistic exotic world for western readers, which I do love, it is kind of strange how they're using Islamic/Arabic/Persian words on a distant planet in a distant time. I think if he could, Frank Herbert would have preferred to do what Villeneuve is doing now, to create a new conlang inspired by those ancient languages. I think it will ultimately have the same effect, if not more convincingly.
But I do agree that downplaying the historical Arab and Islamic references in Dune is unfortunate, it adds so much depth to the story. I suppose it's for marketing reasons, the risk of a backlash from offending someone has never been higher than it is now.

Interesting thing about the emperor’s lack of rizz, it’s worth noting that most of Irulan’s costuming seems pretty extremely elaborate. It makes me wonder if the simplicity and austerity of this interpretation of Shaddam is ironic, a reflection of quiet expression of extreme wealth. Perfect fabrics, worn once and never again.

Hopefully they can fit in more scenes about the sort of peripheral characters that they couldn't make time for in the previous movie, like Gurney's interactions with Paul. Maybe the recent box office successes of longer films like Oppenheimer can convince studio execs that fans will gladly watch 3+ hour-long films as long as the quality is there. Because so far, it is there with Villeneuve's Dune. :))

This is like a literary analysis paper in UA-cam format. I admire your formatting: a solid intro, detailed and referenced supporting content, and a fantastic conclusion which calls back to your thesis statement and references the supporting content.
I think what sets your videos apart is your visual and literal sourcing of supporting text/images.
This was especially apparent in your Game of Thrones breakdowns because you used different frames and text/dialogue quotations to weave a visual tapestry together that was ultimately zoomed out on at the end of your video.
It both produced (visually) and re-enforced (thematically) the tapestry you wove during your analysis and frequently resulted in “mic-drop” moments (speaking in regard to your film analysis).

I think Paul's comment to chani about "doing what has to be done" is that he's gonna embrace being lisaan-al gaib and maybe that the holy war has to happen, and they're crying because they know what this will lead to (which is what Paul has been trying to avoid since his first vision of the war) and for chani she knows that this will mean the continued oppression of her people, and that even though this will be a means to an end they can't help but weep for those who will die and suffer as a result of it

Having read the book several times, I had often had trouble with previous depictions of this story, while fully understanding why putting everything, nuances, meanings, sometimes double and triple meanings: "Plans, within plans, within plans...", would've been nigh on impossible.
The first theatrical release of DUNE had me thinking to myself: "Wait, that didn't happen there! Huh, what happened to...?"
I sure you get my drift?😉
This latest iteration of DUNE hits more bullet points than any of the previous outings, and I enjoyed it, it was well shot/told, but you also see that it try's to include people who may not have any clue about the storyline: and I think it handled that well!
I look forward to the next edition.
