Nice wheel you cut. Thanks for showing the church clock it was very interesting. I noticed the steps had worn treads.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. The tower is many hundreds of years old so a fair few feet have worn those treads.

Thank you for that visit as I will likely never get to see that clock tower in person :-(

It was interesting having a tour of Joyce's works off the back of being involved at S.Mary's Shrewsbury and on occasion helping wind the clock there. Guess that might have been early 90's. Doesn't seem as long ago as it clearly is!

as well as a fine clock you also have a mighty four manual Binns!

Yes, very impressive - good view looking down from there as well.
I spent a lot of weekends of my childhood there as parents would open it to visitors. I had the run of the hidden rooms, used to ring the bells and occasionally help the late David Bloom with winding the clock. ...until things changed with the friends society and we stopped being involved. Always seemed a shape the quarters weren't kept operational, although I think it needed winding something like every 3 days as it was! I was always fascinated watching it whir into life to strike the hours 🙂
Unfortuanately the couple of photos from the visit to Joyce's aren't that great, but the memories of the experience are still there. The place seemed somewhat of a time capsule!

Another great video, Tommy. Loved all of the extra b roll clips and inclusions! A nice job on the wheel and pinion too.
    Cheers,
    Reuben!

When you were cutting the wheel and you got to the moment of truth I was holding my breath that the last tooth would line up with the others, and it did. The church clock was very impressive with those massive wheels. Five weeks in Workshop Wednesday is a highlight of my week.

It's always a nice moment when the last tooth comes out well. It does go wrong from time to time though! I'm really pleased that you are enjoying the videeos, thank you for telling me.

Only slightly, but yes you're right. I don't maintain the clock so don't blaim me!

Hi there, lovely video, you couldn't have picked a better day to go up the church tower. I was wondering when looking at the gear train of the church clock what shape the teeth have. They don't look cycloidal to me, maybe they are involute shaped? Do you know any details about it? Thanks for the video. Regards from the Netherlands.

Thanks very much. Turret clocks are big engineering and tend not to follow horological norms. I’d say this is involute as in more industrial applications. Turret clocks normally have lantern pinions so that makes the gearing far less critical anyway.

    Hello Tommy,
Interesting Vlog, if it is possible to tell, roughly how long did it take to make the wheel.
    Take care.

Hi Paul, the wheel took about 8 hours start to finish.

Good question. It is not something I would have done personally. I feel it detracts from the charm somehow.
